If you don’t have a clear destination in mind, you are likely to wander. Imagine going out in your car to travel, but without a clear place to go. “I’m just traveling!” But we often do this in our growth. “I’m just seeking growth!” Well, to what end? Who are you striving to become. Another aspect is the reality that you are in fact becoming…something. Every day. You are evolving or devolving or remaining stagnant, which is still a becoming. “Yeah, over time, Arnold just became…stagnant. Stuck.” We happen to our transformation or our transformation happens to us. I’m joined by Randy James, Medical Doctor, Functional Medicine expert and one of my favorite allies in striving to grow and become. This is a candid discussion to humbly look at our propensities as humans and the challenge this reality of becoming can be even for aspiring people.

I’m striving to find balance between letting disappointments handicap us, and minimizing feelings that have relevance as well.   • In this episode I'm looking at lost opportunities and questioning the stories we have around them. We've been looking at how we view disappointment and there is a lot of content around just telling a different story. But I don't feel the message benefits us much. We felt what we felt and feel what we feel and it feels reasonable. I think it is...reasonable. But I have a question I feel will cause you to really question your perspective on your past. The idea really caused me to take a step back and all of the sudden I'm feeling less remorse about some past, missed opportunities that have haunted me for decades.

  • In this episode I'm going to confess how something I thought was a great strength, revealed itself as a weakness. And I see it so often with people who are more aware of themselves and concepts of healthy relating. They have learned not to react emotionally toward other people. They can regulate their behavior and in essence, bite their tongues. This can be good for not exacerbating a conflict in the moment. But the question is...what is it doing to us internally? I'm finding over time it can tear us down and even the concepts of healthfully responding and even journaling about it can very often miss the point of resolution and resilience and ultimately leave us in a weakened state. And nobody wants that. Drive with me for a minute to unpack this concept so you can grow stronger and drive better.

  • Some people relate to trauma. Some to grief. But everyone will admit to disappointment, even if you’re a chronic minimizer like me. We’re not here to exaggerate and inflate anything, and nobody wants to give attention to disappointment so it limits them. That however is my concern. Are we healthfully dealing with disappointments or are we repressing unresolved feelings that are in fact, limiting us? You may be CEO of your company and clearing a million per year, and have unresolved disappointments, from your childhood or last year, limiting you. Maybe they are limiting your performance. Your income. Your relationships. Your fulfillment despite your achievements. This was my focus as I entered into the following discussion with acclaimed grief educator and multiple best selling author, Christina Rasmussen. Christina studied to become a therapist and crisis intervention counselor - even doing her master's thesis on the stages of bereavement, and thought she understood grief. Then, with daughters nine months and two-and-a-half years old, her 31 year old husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer and passed away. It was then she truly grasped the depths of sorrow and pain that accompany loss. Four years after Christina’s husband died she created the Life Reentry process, which launched her on a mission to bring compassion, grace, and validation to thousands, while simultaneously establishing an exit from what she termed the Waiting Room. She wrote the book, Second Firsts that became a bestseller. Then, Where Did You Go? Her new book and our muse here is Invisible Loss: Recognizing and Healing the Unacknowledged Heartbreak of Everyday Grief. She’s taken her experience and research from severe and tragic loss and brought the same, profound process of healing into our everyday grief and disappointments. She found that it’s not the size of the big trauma or little disappointment that matters, but the resolution, and she has a process to help us work through it.

  • In this episode we want to help you increase your wellness by elevating your desired healthy habits and routines into cherished rituals. Sacred even, if you will. We talk about diet and exercise and sleep we can often fall into viewing them as a chore. A should. Instead of a reverent endeavor we choose for our glorious well being. Rituals transcend mere chores and instill a reverence and even sacredness to the effort. In this episode Dr James and I talk about taking our daily health and wellness habits and treating them as true rituals that give them far more depth and meaning which of course help dramatically to how we perceive them and therefore, consistently engage with them for the benefit we truly desire. We aren’t clanging gongs or chanting in robes. You may want to. Be free. But even if it’s just an activity where you put a smile on your face, consider the deep reason you are doing it, and feel gratitude instead of chore. That’s a win.

  • In this episode I want to draw you to the things you care about. The things you value and believe in. And challenge you with your responsibility to sell them. Zig Ziglar famously said, “If you believe your product or service can fulfill a true need, it’s your moral obligation to sell it.” Now that doesn’t necessarily mean you must take a job selling a product or service you love. It may be a life concept that’s given you value and the issue is you taking what has given you value and made your life better, and sharing it with others, in a meaningful way. We do this all the time. We see a movie or a show that we enjoyed and we tell everyone they’ve got to see it. Why? We received a benefit and we want others to as well. To help them, but just as much to share in the experience. Whether you sell or share value for a vocation or just in service of others, I want to elevate the role of you telling us what’s benefited you and help you do it in a way that is authentic to you.

  • In this episode I want to erase the myth and polarization of selflessness. I grew up in the Bible Belt and heard so much about dying to self. Altruism and serving others was held up as the holy grail of human achievement. I and so many others got the message that if an action or activity gave you any joy it was selfish and the goal was to abstain from any desire and only fulfill the desires and needs of others. My experience is this made for a lot of guilty people, and I now believe we translated it wrong. This is not what I see from Jesus, and the most giving and fulfilled people I know are very joyful in fulfilling their own pleasures as well. I want us all free to understand what fulfills us, fulfills others better than “dying to self” does. Does this concept concern you?   • In this episode we look at the motives around procrastination. I received some new information that's made me question whether we're really avoiding something and putting it off, or in fact, just giving in to a greater desire. The concept can turn the idea of procrastination upside down. It reminds me of people who don't do something because they are afraid of failing, but sometimes you find out what they are really afraid of is success. Discovering the root driver can be revolutionary when you realize something completely different is motivating you than what you thought.

  • In this episode we continue our walk through a fairly comprehensive list of menu items on treatments for depression, apathy, or even just feeling blue and unmotivated and fatigued. In last week’s episode, we discussed solitude, outside time, exercise, positive input, having purpose and surrounding yourself with inspiration. Here we continue on with about nine other menu items you can pick and choose from to raise your spirits and increase your hope. We really worked to be compassionate and gracious as we discuss this very serious issue, and not showcase any one thing as the holy grail, and recognize you could engage in so many of these and still have a clinical problem. But none of these efforts will hurt, and they will most assuredly help give you the best chance to combat what is holding you down.

  • In this episode I want you to consider the disappointments of your life. You may not perceive them as that critical. Like me, you don’t feel you’ve really had big trauma in your life. You feel you don’t have much real pain or hardship to cite and you should just be good. But you live with a good amount of frustration and discontent. That’s the tell tale sign. I have an intriguing story about tornados and termites to drive the point home that you are possibly at more risk than someone with great trauma. Risk of staying handicapped by your disappointments and not realizing your potential.

  • In this episode I want to address all of you who feel you have it pretty good. You really don’t have much to complain about. And you’re struggling with some guilt for wanting more and feeling some dissatisfaction. With all due respect, if you are hearing this podcast then you are called to more. Not to prove yourself or be worthy. But just cause you hear that call. Period. Let me explain, and yes, I’m going to make a case. I want you inspired to pursue more. Not burdened with it, and not guilty. You’re at risk for feeling guilty for not being content with what you have, or guilty for not doing anything about the itch you feel. Guilt is an enemy. Let’ get rid of it.

If you study the rich and famous, you’ll generally find them at two ends of the spectrum later in life. They are miserable and their lives are a shambles. A good number of them take their own lives or end up with lives that are nothing but pain and despair. Or, they are trying to use their resources to do something meaningful. They don’t want to be commemorated for being the most famous person ever or the richest. They want to have meaning. We all do. This is what fulfills us. And, we need to make a living. His podcast is actually called Remarkable People, and after having 200 amazing guests he’s curated tremendous wisdom in his new book, Think Remarkable: 9 Paths To Transform Your LIfe and Make a Difference. And he, is Guy Kawasaki. Guy is a Silicon Valley legend. If you look him up in Wikipedia it says: Guy Kawasaki is an American marketing specialist, author, and Silicon Valley venture capitalist. He was one of the Apple employees originally responsible for marketing their Macintosh computer line in 1984. He popularized the word evangelist in marketing the Macintosh as an "Apple evangelist" and the concepts of evangelism marketing and technology evangelism/platform evangelism in general. The Wikipedia source is interesting as Guy actually sat on the Wikimedia Foundation board of trustees for a time, which is the non-profit operating entity of Wikipedia. Guy has written 15 books and this is the third time I’ve had him on my show. Guy is a truly inspirational and wise guy. I dubbed this book, “Life’s Little Instruction Book For Aspiring People,” which you’ll hear Guy say he is going to steal and use. I’m honored.   • In this episode we talk about other treatments for depression. Depression doesn’t take away your drive. It just leaves you stuck in park. Idling. Therapy and medications are the primary treatments for depression. This leaves out many other treatments and doesn’t address habits we often have that can massively dilute the efficacy of any amount of therapy and meds. We’re going to give you about 13. Depression, apathy, and just feeling blue and numb, are very real issues affecting all of us. We are all on the spectrum, we’re all coping to a level, and even when we are greatly inspired in one area of our life we can be dealing with aspects of depression in others. No treatments are guarantees, but all are highly relevant in combating these issues. We get through six of them in this episode and continue on in the next episode to cover the rest. A quick note of relevance I feel we should have started off with, is...motive. Until you have a clear motive to pull out of depression, few of any treatments will matter. And motive is the of my book, What Drives You. If you’re struggling with depression, I encourage you to check it out.   • In this episode I’m going to enlighten you to another cultural illness we have. It’s explaining our decisions and actions to get other’s affirmations and validations. We want everyone’s approval and we spend copious amounts of time explaining ourselves and encountering anxiety about having our friend’s, family’s and the world’s blessings about everything we decide to do. And you may often be asked by others why we did something or are doing something or even why we like or dislike something. And we follow with, “Because…” and our explanation. We seek to justify all we do to others. In the last episode I discussed the toxic nature of doing things we feel we “should” do. I’m putting “because” in the same category. Now this isn’t a rebellious message to give everyone the finger and do as you darn well please and not seek wisdom and counsel. But the fact you are here and listening says you seek wisdom and counsel. You have to be accountable to yourself for what you decide to do and the actions you take in life, and trust you are seeking counsel and wisdom. But then you choose to do what you’ll do and I’m cautioning you to consider the need to explain yourself. That’s the show.

  • In this short episode I want to uncover the insidious role of expectations and shoulds that often make up much of our personal and cultural drive. And, it shouldn’t. Whatever you are driving after that is fueled by a should will bear bad fruit. One of three things will happen. One, you’ll achieve the objective, but with bitterness and exhaustion. Call it collateral damage. This is what leads to burnout. Two, you’ll achieve the objective but find no fulfillment and you’ll just wonder what’s next. Or three, you won’t ever achieve the objective because your heart is not really in it, and you’ll feel guilt and frustration because you know you’re capable. But right now, even as I say this, you’re likely to feel trapped, as you have built your life now, around a lot of should’s and expectations. I understand. I’ve done it too. There are two options to rid yourself of these energy vampires. That’s the show.
