As daylight shortens and we approach the winter solstice, some rejoicing and carol singing has been going down in some parts of the country. Ample snow is on the ground. Let the snow sliding begin. Randy and Doug connect in this episode to discuss a wide range of topics, from a new store opening in Silverthorne to ATK's entry into the hybrid binding scene. No matter what you have come for, you'll note a shift from cycling into the serene world of skiing uphill, clicking in, and seeking turns.

Snow in the hills reminds us that gravity and instabilities are parts of the backcountry experience. Stay focused, educated, and be wise. Happy holidays from the Cripple Creek crew.

On Episode 122 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

The SWE cross-reference. Some have snow, others do the dance. Colorado stoke for early-season snow. Group skins and skimo racing. Opening a new store in Silverthorne, Colorao. Supply chain dynamics in the ski industry. The new ATK HY Free binding. G3 back online. Some ski and cycling indystry banter. Avalanche dreams—literally dreaming of about avalanches. • On Episode 121 of Totally Deep Podcast, Doug Stenclik and Randy Young of www.cripplecreekbc.com bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.

Episode 121 of Totally Deep is an all Doug and Randy affair. Randy brings closure to the biking season as he completes ~111 miles and 11,400 feet of climbing in this race/organized event in and around Austin, Texas. For his part to make a quick pivot into winter, Doug picks up the ski touring mantle with some jaunts up Highland Bowl and fine early-season tour in Marble.

Doug's announcement that he may be eyeing a life with less travel to non-local races may come as shocking news to some. The door to a new life of competing in only local events comes in handy if you want to avoid traveling to Europe for a race and having it canceled.

On Episode 121 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

Randy closes out the cycling season. And how did the ride go, Randy? Early season snowpack in the Rado—182% snowpack for Nov. 10. Doug and the early-stoker dilemma. An early tour in Marble. Christmas lights, holiday snow, and it's all good for business. Doug discusses skimo racing and the possibility of this being a farewell tour. A big decision to focus on local races. Doug is not looking forward to training on a stationary trainer. CCBC ski team merch and acknowledging the spring bliss that is the PNW.

Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.

Episode 120 features Dean Hill, owner and coach at Aspen Pro Cycling.

Originally from Australia, Hill began his competitive career there as a BMX racer. Once exposed to the grind and endorphins of road cycling, cross country, and endurance mountain biking, he was hooked. Ultimately, Hill settled in the Roaring Fork Valley and began fixating on the skimo scene.

What you'll find in this episode, and in Hill's advice, is a relative calmness when it comes to performing your best. There's talk of improving sport-specific economy by focusing on technique and taking a lengthy break— for up to three weeks—to refresh and reboot between your sport-specific seasons. Hill calls it the full well-being reset.

As the snow falls in Colorado, it's time to scrape the skis and begin thinking about being the best version of yourself as you huff and puff uphill. It turns out, Hill might be able to help you out with that.

On Episode 120 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

The Turboless Sprinter Van. The transition from BMX to mountain bike racing. Finding a place for technique in cycling and skimo. Gear failures. Nutrition and a no-nonsense race-fueling plan. Getting caught up in doing a PR in training. Dream races. Steephill running as a means for fitness. Take a lengthy break between your sports season. Full well-being reset. Gradual return to high-stress activities. Improve economy while skimo-ing.

Episode 119 features Auden Schendler, the author of the forthcoming book, Terrible Beauty: Reckoning with Climate Complicity and Rediscovering Our Soul. If you reside in the Roaring Fork Valley, you are likely familiar with Schendler, the Senior Vice President of Sustainability at Aspen Ski Company. He is also well-known as a practical advocate for creating positive outcome solutions.

He is keenly interested in developing sensible business strategies that positive evolve communities. People...get ready to step up, get involved, and work towards broad initiatives that affect the greater whole. Be warned; you might want to run for elected office after listening to the episode.

For those coming to the pod for the backcountry skiing—you'll hear about that, too. Schindler weaves some tales about touring on too-long tele-planks and his exodus from New Jersey to Colorado.

  • On Episode 118 of Totally Deep Podcast, Doug Stenclik and Randy Young of www.cripplecreekbc.com bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.

Episode 118 features CCBC Carbondale store manager Nick Penzel and his take on the dad scene. To be clear, Nick is not a dad; he has one, and he has a specific take on dads in the front and backcountry. Trigger warning: dads, come with an open mind as Nick has some more revolutions around the sun until he too understands dad-realm.

Another key factor is that Randy is a new dad. As a new dad, he's maybe feeling less spry than normal and looking for some good medicine—what he refers to as his dad-mod, not exactly a dad-bod. There's no leaving Doug out of the episode's commentary. What is true is that Doug is wiggling into a small Dynafit-branded Speed Jean. We can only imagine what these are: Part skimo outfit aprĂ©s attire? A cotton-Lycra blend? Doug is not a dad and isn't that slow, but he knows many dads who crush.

We digress. Back to Nick. As a store manager, Nick gets to eye and fondle gear daily. You'll get his take on the gear for dads and non-dads alike in episode 118.

On Episode 118 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

Randy's epic: Driving through the night from TX. to CO. and acclimatizing. Group rides and shuttles—Doug finds clarity. The quick-hit Mexico volcano trip. The dad mod for the dad bod. Boot suggestions. Going Dynafit head to toe. Is it plausible? Going off the shelves, ATK bindings. Branding CCBC.

The time machine reveals it all started in the 50s when the Humanic Company began producing ski boots. Over time, a speedy snow leopard became an iconic symbol for an iconic brand: Dynafit. As part of the first trans-oceanic podcast, Doug reports from Germany, where he's been visiting the new Dynafit Speed Factory. Speed. It comes from somewhere.

Along with the joys of heading out on a just-to-far mountain bike ride, Doug provides insight into how the brand we associate with light and fast may evolve. Join us for the ride.

It is time to not only raise the levels but also to get granular about the bike quiver. You decide if Doug throws shade at the gravel scene or is verbally fine-tuning his bike quiver to optimize what a gravel-road-mountain bike can be. And if clip-on time trial bars might save a few watts and seconds, maybe it is time to consider that gear add-on.

Doug and Randy also explore the mertis of a highly structured training plan. The conclusion is to be kind on yourself, know your prioritities, and maybe consider dialing back the training, if not the levels.

The wheelhouse of Totally Deep expands in this episode when Doug and Randy interview Mark Grotjahn, a noted American artist who also happens to backcountry ski. Or, maybe, for TDP purposes, we have a backcountry skier who happens to be an artist. No matter, Grothjahn brings a unique and welcome perspective to the ski scene that embodies his broad vision of seeing the world. Gagosian.com writes about his art, "Grotjahn combines gesture and geometry with abstraction and figuration in visually dynamic paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Each of his series reflects a range of art-historical influences and unfolds in almost obsessive permutations."

You can learn more about Grotjahn and his art here.

But the story doesn't end there. Grotjahn, a powder snow lover, also has a soft spot for DPS skis. More on that in a bit.

Recently, Grtotjahn opened an exhibit titled Backcountry. "In Backcountry, he continues to draw inspiration from rural landscapes and his ski touring and fly-fishing adventures in the backcountry of western Colorado," writes Gagosian.com. Along with the exhibit, Cripple Creek Backcountry, Grotjahn, and DPS released a limited edition series of skis featuring Grotjahn's art on the topsheets: the new ski is known as the Mark Grotjahn DPS 50 Kitchens Ski.

This also marks the release of a new DPS powder ski, the Kaizen 112.

On Episode 109 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

Cody Townsend cements himself into the ski mountaineering lore (only you can define ski mountaineering) as his quest to ski The Fifty continues. This season, Tonswend has released videos documenting more classics, including a three-part Bugs to Rogers Traverse and a smattering of lines, including the Skyladder and a return to The Spinx in Alaska.

Cody also chats about the season at hand and his progress with the project, and as it comes down to spicier and logistically more complex lines, how the Fifty Project could extend several years out.

Then there's the gear. Doug and Cody discuss the evolution of Salomon's touring boot lineup and the release of the new QST Echo 106 ski, a more touring-oriented QST.

On Episode 108 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.

Episode 107 features Blase Reardon, the Director of the Flathead Avalanche Center in Northwest Montana. Reardon has deep experience in the avalanche forecasting realm, having worked at the Sawtooth Avalanche Center and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. Dialing up the TDP time machine, Reardon first appeared on the podcast in 2015, where they discussed such things as the STFU skintrack. You can find that episode here.

A highlight of episode 107 isn't a breakdown of the snow science but a real-deal unpacking of our complex decision-making processes in the backcountry. The season, not unlike many others, has been rife with unstable snowpacks in some regions and the uneasy quest to find safe, stable, and carefree skiing. With this in mind, Doug and Blase discuss their time together in Carbondale as Doug's local crew tries to stack the deck in their favor knowing that it is still house rules in avalanche terrain.

Episode 106 features Jeremy Jones, a longtime boundary pusher in the snowboard scene. Jones' involvement in the sport takes many paths; business owner, steep riding pioneer, and political activist as the founder of POW (Protect Our Winters). After decades of experience, Jones finally put his thoughts to paper — he recently published his first book, The Art of Shralpinism — Lessons From The Mountains. Think of the book as part memoir, part manual for best practices in the mountains, part art book, and an ode to finding joy by making turns. Page after page, Jones exudes the glass-half-full ethos.
