Itâs a case that has stumped generations of detectives and Internet sleuths. On Sept. 16, 2009, 24-year-old Richardson was arrested at an oceanside Malibu restaurant and taken to Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriffâs Station. With no money, no phone, and no ride, and in the midst of what was later described by law enforcement as a severe bipolar episode, Richardson was released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. just after midnight, and disappeared into the night. Her whereabouts confounded authorities for nearly a year until her skeletonized and partially mummified remains were found on Aug. 9, 2010, up rugged Dark Canyon, some six miles away from the station.
There was no sign of trauma to Mitriceâs remains and the coroner could not determine the cause of death. But Mitriceâs death was undoubtedly suspicious. Her bra, belt, and jeans were found some distance from her body; the rest of her clothing was never found. On May 31, 1985, two days before her high school graduation, Shari Smith was abducted from the driveway of her family home in South Carolina. In 2004, the FBI was tipped off to a gruesome pattern of unsolved murders along American roadways. On August 23, 1987, the body of Selonia Reed, 26, was found partially clothed in the passenger seat of her car in an empty parking lot in Hammond, Louisiana. She had sustained incredible blunt force trauma to her head and face, her upper body suffering more than a dozen stab wounds from an-ice pick type weapon. Killed elsewhere, her body drained of blood, she had been displayed, sexually violated with an umbrella.
Police investigated but with little evidence the case soon went cold.

In 1992, a store clerk was found shot to death in broad daylight at the Boot Village in St. Charles, Missouri. Nothing was stolen and there was no sexual assault. This bizarre and seemingly isolated murder was quickly connected with others in Indianapolis, Wichita, Terre Haute, and Raytown. The media dubbed the suspect âThe I-70 Serial Killer.â He has never been captured, and the story quickly fell out of the mediaâs attention. But the cases never went cold for the officers in those cities.
In 2021, with the advancements in DNA, St. Charles Police Captain Raymond Floyd launched a task force, bringing all jurisdictions together along with federal agencies to take one final crack at solving the crimes. The task force selected Bob Cyphers of KMOV-TV to follow them along, city by city, in the hunt for the killer. Cyphers and his KMOV crew produced a seven-part award winning series called âChasing the I-70 Serial Killer.â Their work led to national exposure of the case in People magazine and on the Discovery Channel, winning an Edward R. Jeff German, a veteran Las Vegas Review-Journal investigative reporter, was no stranger to controversy or the danger of his work. For more than four decades, he wrote stories relentlessly confronting the mob, corrupt politicians, and greedy bureaucrats. As a result, he was often threatenedâenough that he and his friend and fellow investigative reporter, Arthur Kane, sometimes joked about reporting on these threats if they were ever acted upon. Then, in the spring of 2022, German received a tip about abuses at a little-known county office. Elmer Wayne Henley, Jr. was only fourteen when he first became entangled with serial rapist and murderer Dean Corll in 1971. Fellow Houston, Texas, teenager David Brooks had already been ensnared by the charming older man, bribed with cash to help lure boys to Corllâs home. When Henley unwittingly entered the trap, Corll evidently sensed heâd be of more use as a second accomplice than another victim. He baited Henley with the same deal heâd given Brooks: $200 for each boy they could bring him. Henley didnât understand the full extent of what he had signed up for at first. But once he started, Corll convinced him that he had crossed the line of no return and had to not only procure boys but help kill them and dispose of the bodies, as well. When Henley first took a life, he lost his moral base. He felt doomed. By the time he was seventeen, heâd helped with multiple murders and believed heâd be killed, too. But on August 8, 1973, he picked up a gun and shot Corll. When he turned himself in, Henley showed police where he and Brooks had buried Corllâs victims in mass graves. Twenty-eight bodies were recoveredâmost of them boys from Henleyâs neighborhoodâmaking this the worst case of serial murder in America at the time. The case reveals gross failures in the way cops handled parentsâ pleas to look for their missing sons and how law enforcement possibly protected a larger conspiracy.
