  • This episode features leaders from two different sectors who are working together to advance the decentralized science movement. Allison Deuttmann is the CEO of Foresight Institute, a nonprofit that benefits the development of high-impact technologies. It was founded back in 1987 and continues to pave the way for new work in science and technology. We're also joined by Ela Madej, founding partner of 50 Years, a venture capital firm focused on deep tech and web3 (among other areas) and a mission statement of wanting to use capital as a force for good. So my question to our guests today is how do these two worlds support the growing DeSci movement? How are they thinking about what is happening in this space? And what are their hopes and fears for the future?

  • Today's episode is a collaboration with David Lang, executive director of Experiment Foundation and creator and host of Science Better. David and Jocelynn talk about crowdfunding for science, some of the twists and turns of building new platforms, and lessons learned from open science and citizen science communities. They also get into the idealism of the DeSci movement and hopes and fears for what is to come.

  • Ethan Perlstein started his company with Silicon Valley funding and a Bay Area lab, taking a traditional, centralized path to working on drug development and drug repurposing. But that was back in 2014. Today, his public benefit corporation (Perlara), looks like a very different business, made up of biotech consultants from around the world that work on guided cures for families and foundations with rare diseases. Ethan walks us through the evolution of his company through the years and how Perlara developed a drug entering a Phase 3 trial this year. Learn from Perlstein's decentralized approach to biotech in this episode.

  • It started with a tweet. A 25 year old woman named Mallory was suffering from an infection that had failed all antibiotic treatments. A researcher named Dr. Steffanie Strathdee was using Twitter to hunt for the impossible - a scientist somewhere in the world who might have the right phage - a virus that infects bacteria - that could save this patient. When Jessica Sacher (a phage researcher) showed her friend Jan Zheng (a UI/UX developer) the tweet, the idea for Phage Directory was born. A simple, elegant solution to a global problem. Phage Directory started as a list of phage researchers and a newsletter called Capsid & Tail. To date, it has facilitated multiple phage cures, grown a global community of researchers who hold potential treatments for future drug-resistant infections, and built a model for discovery research from benchtop to bedside, N-of-1 cures. Jan and Jessica are making the leap to Australia to further their mission with Phage Directory and help build a safety net on a country-wide scale for these types of infections. Get inspired by the progress that Jan, Jessica, and their research community has made for cures of drug-resistant infections through a global, decentralized network of researchers.
