  • In this episode, Ruth talks to composer Sherri Chung about writing for her dream project "Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai" on Max; the joys, the challenges and the nitty gritty aspects in writing for TV; her mentorship and collaborations with Blake Neely, as well as her first soundtrack inspirations and projects to her current new show "Found" on NBC.

Award-winning composer Sherri Chung has been recognized internationally as a trailblazing composer for film and television. Her music transcends genre, and fuses inspirations—both traditional and emerging—in support of filmmakers’ visions worldwide. Sherri currently composed the scores for the TV shows Kung Fu (CW), HBO Max/Amblin’s animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, and most recently, the Netflix feature film, Happiness For Beginners and NBC’s Found, that premiered this October. Frequently recognized for her other television credits, including the CW network series Batwoman and Riverdale, NBC’s Blindspot, and Ava DuVernay’s limited series The Red Line, she has also scored numerous feature films, documentaries, and commercials. Recent film credits include Warner Bros Studio’s Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, and The Lost Husband, the latter which garnered her a Society of Composers and Lyricists Nomination for Best Score for an Independent Studio Film. She also composed the score for The Other Side of Home, which was shortlisted in the 2017 Oscars for Best Short Documentary. Not only a composer, Sherri is also a pianist, vocalist, performer and songwriter. As a vocalist, she has recorded for films, commercials, trailer music, and television (ABC’s Resurrection, CW’s Arrow and NBC’s Blindspot). Her voice can also be heard on the Netflix documentary series The Keepers (which was Emmy nominated for Outstanding Documentary). An active member of the film music industry, Sherri also serves as Governor of the Music Branch of the Television Academy.

  • In this second part of a two-part episode, we look at how Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hopper and Alexandre Desplat pick up the mantle from John Williams to continue the sounds and world of Harry Potter in films 4-8. From folk tunes, to new and unusual instruments, to new places such as the Ministry of Magic, as well as returning ideas from dragons to flying to magic in Hogwarts. Each composer has their own unique sound while still staying within the late romantic orchestral sound with a few quirky moments thrown in while the sounds of magic are continued in choir and celeste.

  • In this first part of a two-part episode, we look at the variety of ways that John Williams creates the musical world of Harry Potter. From school songs to Quidditch, from dragons to goblins, from ghosts to moving staircases, John Williams combines the rich late-romantic orchestral sound with the slightly odd notes resembling 20th century composers such as Stravinsky and Prokofiev to create a world that seems both familiar and different. He also expands in the second and third film from celeste and choir to adding instruments from the Baroque and Renaissance, combining new sounds with old. This episode focuses solely on the first three movies composed by John Williams.
