  • Welcome to our podcast exploring the dark and mysterious world of MK-Ultra. MK-Ultra was a top-secret program of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) that ran from the 1950s to the early 1970s. Its goal was to develop mind control techniques for use in espionage, but the methods used were often unethical and sometimes even torturous. In this podcast, we'll delve into the history and practices of MK-Ultra, and explore some of the key figures and events involved. To guide us on this journey, we'll be drawing on two books that shed light on different aspects of this shadowy world:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/conspiracy-theory-or-not--4674638 "The Search for the Manchurian Candidate" by John Marks, and "Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon" by David McGowan."The Search for the Manchurian Candidate" is a seminal work of investigative journalism that uncovered the true extent of the MK-Ultra program and its disturbing experiments on human subjects. It reveals the inner workings of the CIA and how it used drugs, hypnosis, and other methods to try and control people's minds."Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon", on the other hand, focuses on the counterculture of the 1960s and its relationship with the intelligence community. It explores the strange and surreal world of Laurel Canyon, a bohemian enclave in Los Angeles that was home to many of the era's most influential musicians and artists. McGowan argues that many of these figures were connected to intelligence agencies, and that their work was used to promote a specific cultural agenda. So join us as we journey down the rabbit hole of MK-Ultra, and explore the dark and often unsettling truths behind this notorious program.

  • On March 30, 1952 four men were executed in Athens, Greece. They were accused of being communists and committing acts of espionage and treason. Three years later, the daughters of one of these men were put on a plane and sent to America. They were adopted by a wealthy Greek American couple in Massachusetts. Their adoption was the first of a long line of adoptions between Greece and the US that has been kept a secret for years. It is a story that takes us back to the Cold War years and to a relationship of dominance and submission between the US and Greece. But it’s also a personal story, about facing one’s past — decades after being forced to forget. Can a broken family come together again?

  • “Bold Venture” was a radio show that aired between 1951 and 1952. The series was set in Havana, Cuba, and followed the adventures of Slate Shannon (played by Humphrey Bogart) and his partner, Sailor Duval (played by Lauren Bacall). Slate Shannon was a former sailor and owner of the "Bold Venture" - a shipping line that primarily focused on fishing charters. Sailor Duval was his loyal companion, who also served as the ship's first mate. Together, the two ran the business and solved various mysteries that came their way.

The show was created by Morton Fine and David Friedkin, and its popularity owed much to the involvement of the Bogarts. Humphrey Bogart was one of the most famous actors of the era and had just come off a string of successful film roles. His marriage to Lauren Bacall had also captivated the public's attention, and the couple's chemistry on the show was often cited as one of the reasons for its success.

Each episode followed a similar structure - a new client would come to Slate and Sailor with a problem that needed solving. This would usually involve some kind of danger or criminal activity, and the duo would set about investigating. Along the way, they would cross paths with various shady characters, including smugglers, gamblers, and gangsters. The show was known for its fast-paced action, tense cliffhangers, and witty banter between the two leads.

“Bold Venture” only ran for one season, but it remains a favorite among fans of classic radio dramas. It was a show that managed to balance thrilling adventure with light-hearted comedy, and its two iconic stars only added to its appeal.

  • "I Was a Communist for the FBI" was an American old-time radio show that aired from 1952 to 1954. The program is based on the true experiences of Matt Cvetic, an undercover agent who infiltrated the Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA) on behalf of the FBI in the early Cold War period. Cvetic's real-life espionage and its dramatization were used as a means to expose and highlight the perceived threats of communism during the height of American anti-communist sentiment.
The show was produced by Ziv Television Programs and was a serialized drama, with each episode presenting a standalone story about Cvetic's dangerous life as an undercover agent within the Communist Party. The series dramatized various assignments Cvetic undertook, depicting his efforts to thwart the communists' plans while maintaining his cover and dealing with the emotional and moral dilemmas of leading a double life.
Dana Andrews, known for his roles in films like "Laura" and "The Best Years of Our Lives," starred as Matt Cvetic. The show was notable for its opening announcement: "I was a Communist for the FBI. I walk alone," which set the tone for the dramatic and suspenseful nature of the episodes.
The series also spawned a 1951 film titled "I Was a Communist for the FBI," which received an Academy Award nomination for Documentary Feature, although it was a dramatized narrative feature, not a documentary.
"I Was a Communist for the FBI" was part of a broader cultural and media trend during the early Cold War that included books, films, and other radio shows that depicted communists and Soviet agents as villains, reflecting the fears and politics of the era. The show remains a fascinating example of how media was used to influence public perception and serve political agendas during a tense period of American history.
