The lads talked to Professor Roland Baron from Harvard University. Roland has played a key role in characterising bone signalling pathways that govern bone formation and contributed to developing new treatments that increase cell signalling to improve bone mass.
Roland is a co-founder and chair of the International Federation of Musculoskeletal Research Societies supporting our community and helping young scientists from the entire world to develop and support people living with osteoporosis.

The lads talked to each other about the exciting news that the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) announced it had approved a new drug, Abaloparatide, for use by the health service. It will be available for use on the NHS in England within three months.

The lads talk to Dr Friederike Schulte about exciting research which shows that mechanical loading potentiates the effect of anabolic treatments for osteoporosis, leading to bigger gains in bone mass and strength. Friederike also spoke to us about her role in public outreach as a Co-Founder at the Swiss Fall Prevention Center. The startup works in the community to share knowledge about fall prevention with people at risk of a fracture, including expert lectures in senior and residential homes.

Want to know how to eat to reduce your risk of a hip-fractures? It’s a question our listeners are always asking so the lads reached out to Australia to talk to Dr Sandra Luliano who led an investigation reporting that the risk of falls and of bone and hip fractures decreased in older adults if they received additional daily servings of dairy. The results were startling: 33% fewer bone fractures, 46% fewer hip fractures and 11% fewer falls.
Dr Sandra Luliano is a senior researcher at the University of Melbourne based at Austin Health.

Romosozumab is a new drug treatment for some people living with osteoporosis. It may be suitable if you’ve already broken a bone due to osteoporosis and are at high risk of breaking another.

Kirstie suffered multiple osteoporotic fractures shortly after giving birth to her son Freddy and explains the patient journey and perspectives from fracture to treatment. Stuart is a Rheumatologist from the University of Edinburgh with an interest in bone disease. He talks to us about his new research project to investigate osteoporosis in pregnancy.

Craig is the Chief Executive Officer of the ROS and has led the development of a new strategy for tackling osteoporosis called ‘Breaking the Silence’. Gustavo is a geriatrician, clinical researcher and a world leader in ageing and musculoskeletal research, with a special interest in the treatment of frailty osteoporosis, sarcopenia and in older persons.
We had an exciting chat about the crosstalk between bone and muscle and how communication between the two organs is important for ageing and the risk of falls and fractures.
