  • This week, we're embracing the eerie and chilling vibes as it’s spooky season!

Venture with us into the haunted corridors of Moon River Brewing in Savannah, where ghosts of gamblers and yellow fever victims roam, and Phoenix Brewing Company in Ohio, famously located in a former mortuary with a history that's as dark as its beer. We'll also recount ghostly legends like the playful yet eerie spirit "Toby" and the enigmatic "lady in white."

But our supernatural exploration doesn’t stop at ghost stories! Discover our hilarious superstition of leaving a pint for a brewer’s ghost, and laugh along as we consider which beer styles might fend off spooky spirits. From cocktail concoctions like the “Zombie Apocalypse Drink” to a deep dive into bizarre ingredients in beers like black garlic and ghost pepper, there’s something spooky and fun for every beer lover.

As well as sharing the spookiest beers currently in our fridges, we share a selection of beer cocktails that you can create for your next Halloween party – are they tricks or treats?

  • In another episode of our Lager series, we're diving into the rich and toasty world of Munich Dunkels through a tantalizing exploration of Hofbrau and Augustiner beers. Using these two iconic brews as our focal point, we delve into their distinctive taste profiles, contrasting the higher bitterness and drier finish of Hofbrau with the strong, malty character of Augustiner.

Traveling back to the 12th century origins of Dunkel beer, believed to be first brewed by Benedictine monks, we discuss the fascinating challenges and innovations that have shaped its journey to modern-day enjoyment. We'll also share the delightful nuances of a Munich Dunkel's flavor profile, characterized by toasty notes, mild bitterness, and a malt-forward presence that embodies the cozy essence of autumn.

Just for funsies, we also grace you with a Munich Dunkel inspired beer cocktail!

  • Who are the pioneers of the craft beer scene? Inspired by Vine Pair’s article ‘The Mount Rushmore of Craft Breweries” we embark on a spirited discussion about the UK craft breweries that have carved a significant niche in the beer landscape. We share our personal picks for a UK "Mount Rushmore" of craft breweries, with Jo highlighting Thornbridge, Cloudwater, The Kernel, and Verdant for their innovation, quality, and foundational impact on the craft scene.

We dive into the unique contributions of each brewery, from Thornbridge's famed Jaipur to Cloudwater's groundbreaking styles, The Kernel’s commitment to historical recipes, and Verdant’s mastery of the New England IPA.

We also discuss the selection criteria for these influential breweries, the balance between personal bias and historical impact, and the humor found in the quirks of beer history. Our conversation even touches on broader global influences with mentions of other notable breweries and the intricacies of the craft beer evolution on both sides of the Atlantic.

We navigate through Tori’s noteworthy mention of breweries like Vault City, Elusive and Emperor’s. As always, you'll find a blend of engaging anecdotes, light banter, and deep dives into the craft beer culture.

Who would be on your Mount Rushmore of craft beer?

  • It’s been a while since we’ve talked exclusively about non-alcoholic beer options. With Guinness 0 making such an impact recently, we thought it was time to give you a bit more insight into non-alcoholic stouts, exploring both the opportunities and challenges faced by big brewers and small craft beer producers alike. Larger companies like Guinness have harnessed their resources to master the art of creating non-alcoholic versions of their classic recipes, while smaller brewers continue to innovate despite financial constraints.

We'll take you through the sensory experience of tasting alcohol-free beers, breaking down the nuances in flavour, mouthfeel, and mouth-watering potential. Examining everything from the technology behind 0% ABV brewing, to a fun taste test of a cinnamon bun verses cinnamon and coffee stout from Mash Gang, our discussion covers the growing demand for health-conscious alternatives and the importance of consistent quality in craft beer venues.

We also delve into intriguing collaborations, such as a chocolate stout from Northern Monk partnering with Leeds-based Get Baked, analysing how ingredients like lactose can impact taste and accessibility. Whether you’re curious about how non-alcoholic stouts stack up to their full-strength counterparts, or looking for the next great alcohol-free drink, we've got recommendations and insights to share.

We will also take you through the fascinating history of Gueuze, the specific serving temperatures, and the traditional glassware that enhance the drinking experience. You'll hear about their adventures finding Lambic baskets, the artistry behind the brewing process, and the fascinating revival of traditional beer styles in Belgium.

  • We are showcasing one of Jo’s fave beer styles for this edition of our lager series – Vienna lager. In fact, it’s the style that got her into beer! Tori’s more of a Marzen fan, but each to their own.

Looking at the history of Vienna lager, we meet our old friends Anton Dreher and Gabriel Sadlmayer (those thieving brewers with their walking sticks), find out who brews better – head brewers or ghosts, and how the best versions of beers may be picked by our feline friends.

We found two great examples of the Vienna lager style from home and abroad:

Elements #12 Vienna lager from Wild Horse in Wales

Chungdamdong Myuhnuri by Artmonster Brewery in Korea

This can be a difficult style to find, but if you do let us know where you got it!

We also give thanks to our robots overlords and ask Chat GTP to create us beer cocktail versions of an Amaretto Sour. Tori tries an addition of a wheat beer and Jo adds a citrusy pale ale – but does it work?

    Beers we tried:

  • Said in very British voice: ‘where has that time gone?!’ We are already half way through the year and checking in on our 2024 beer goals.

We both think we’ve done alright so far, Tori is working on hard mode (obvs) while Jo is reviewing and refining her goals – mid year is the best time for this! We also look at how far we’ve got with our Drink Harder challenge and, once again, debate what constitutes a dive bar!

Tori lets us in on her data collection for the year so far and Jo shares the beginnings of her beer journal. We’ll also see which were the top episodes of the quarter.

How are your beer goals going? And where is your fave dive bar? Let us know!

  • In this episode of our lager series we are diving into the effervescent world of American light lagers, shining a spotlight on their unique place in beer culture.

Alongside giving you tasting notes, we navigate the fascinating history and marketing strategies that have propelled these beverages into the hearts and hands of many… if not those of us craft beer lovers! Tori grabbed us a Miller Lite while she was in the US, so we can give you our honest insights into the typical example of this style. We then compare this to craft and non alcoholic versions brewed here in the UK.

    We drink:

    Miller Lite

    Good Time by Duration

    Low Life by Mash Gang

Do you shun light lagers or do you indulge in a little guilty pleasure every now and then, maybe on a hot day while bbqing?! Let us know!

  • This week, we're diving into the challenges and opportunities for women in the beer industry and community with the thought-provoking findings from The Gender Pint Gap: Revisited report by Dea Latis. Using the report as a starting point, we'll explore the ten challenges and nine opportunities it highlights, addressing critical aspects such as the need for gender-neutral marketing, inclusive spaces, and better representation in mainstream advertising.

We'll share personal anecdotes and our thoughts on the opportunities outlined in the report, like promoting premium beer, emphasizing taste over price, and introducing low or no-alcohol options. Additionally, we'll touch on how these changes can cater to different age groups and demographics while creating education and career opportunities in the industry.

We discuss the societal norms and constraints that influence women's attitudes toward beer, the physical and psychological impacts they face, and the necessity for businesses to make ground-level changes to support inclusivity.

This is such an important piece of research and we give a huge thanks to Annabel Smith and Dea Latis for taking it on.

You can read the report for yourself here:
