Helene and Adri continue their nostalgia-filled Olsen twin journey with yet another Dualstar Entertainment production, Switching Goals (1999). Not known for our knowledge, or (frankly) passion, for sports, this episode is full of non-sporting observations with the occasional bone thrown at those of you who actually like sports.

Get your passports ready, we're headed to Paris! Well, more like Parisian streets with a heavy dose of California interior and exterior shots, but you get the picture. Join Helene and Adri as they dish all about the 1999 Dualstar Entertainment / Tapestry Films classic that made us want crossbody backpacks, Passport to Paris (1999). This movie was produced by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (executive producers, natch) and the fashions are all over the place (possibly also available at your nearest Target rn).

Season one of Growing Up Millennial holds a really special place in our hearts: the direct-to-video (that's VHS to you, dear listeners) movies made by the Olsen Twins in the '90s and early aughts.
These films were a staple of our combined childhood (even with our seven-year age difference), and Adri and Helene are here to dissect, discuss, and reminisce about all of them. We go through the plot, the fashion, the feminism, and we even give a voice to the voiceless in podcasting, the straight white cis dude.
Even though we want to say that Our Lips Are Sealed to surprise our audience with which movies we’re going to cover throughout these eight episodes, we can safely say that you’ll get a full list pretty soon. Some may even say that you’ll see it in a New York Minute.
What to expect from our first episode: We hope you have your virtual passports, pretend airline tickets, and spiritual cross-body backpacks at the ready, because we’re headed to Paris! What could be more iconic (or should we say iconique?) than to begin our Dualstar journey with the 1999 classic, Passport to Paris? Nothing, that’s what. I mean, this movie had FASHION (yes, the usage of all caps was a necessary choice) and a romance for the ages (I’m looking at you J-Man & Brigitte).

Mark your calendars with glitter gel pens! Growing Up Millennial is launching on November 1, 2023.
We're a podcast about all things nostalgia from the 90s to the early aughts.
Remember that feeling you got when you’d rush home after school, wearing those butterfly clips and/or chain wallets, to watch your favorite TV shows and movies? Do you remember that thrill you’d feel at talking all about your favorite shows on your transparent corded phone or Nokia phone (if you had a Razr flip phone, wow so you were rich RICH?! God Bless)?
Well, we’re all about reliving those moments, the good, the not-so-good, and everything in between on our new podcast, Growing Up Millennial. That’s right, we’re in full nostalgia mode. Go grab your scrunchies, put on your platform sneakers, and apply a healthy amount of that Dr. Pepper-flavored lip smacker. Our goal with this new show? To get you to feel that same level of triumph you’d feel when you didn’t kill your Tamagotchi (or GigaPet) on the first day of its life. That and for you to feel like you’re right there with us on a virtual blanket fort. Truly, what a time to be alive.
If you listened to Accio Politics, the Harry Potter re-read podcast about politics in the wizarding world, you already know your hosts in this nostalgia-filled journey (and also, thanks for listening to our first show)! With Growing Up Millennial, Adri Wilson and Helene Karp are back to talk about our favorite millennial pieces of media and memories that make our millennial hearts full.

Hold on to your wands, this is one of the last episodes in our show's history! We talk about the penultimate chapter of DH (or if you don't count Epilogues as strictly chapters, this is the LAST chapter of the seventh book). Your hosts talk about the politics of confidence and bravery, how these intersect and how they diverge, and they also manage to speak on Emily Henry once again.

This is the one where Voldemort gives everyone at Hogwarts the choice to deliver Harry to him before midnight otherwise the Death Eaters will attack the school. Only Pansy Parkinson seems to think this is a good idea so everyone braces to fight while Harry still struggles to determine where to find Ravenclaw’s Diadem. With Ron and Hermione nowhere to be found, he tracks down the hiding place but runs into a number of old friends on the way who have joined to help fight. Harry reunites with Ron and Hermione and they head toward the Room of Requirement where they are confronted by Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle. Crabbe casts a Fiendfyre curse and the room goes up in flames but Harry decides to save Draco and Goyle before they escape with the Diadem. The sixth Horcrux is destroyed and they start planning their next steps when they run into Fred and Percy. The group is attacked by Death Eaters, and they find Fred’s body in the wreckage.

This is the one where, after alerting Voldemort to Harry’s presence, Luna stuns Alecto Carrow only for her brother Amycus to show up along with McGonagall. Harry ends up casting the Cruciatus curse on Amycus after he spits in McGonagall’s face, and after subduing them both Harry gets the chance to tell McGonagall what’s going on. She has a run-in with Snape which ends with him jumping out of the window to escape, and then she rounds up the rest of the heads of Houses to protect the school and get everyone to safety. Harry returns to the Room of Requirement to see that the Order has shown up to help fight. Everyone starts heading to the Great Hall to prepare for battle but Harry and the Weasley family stay behind. While Ginny is fighting with her family to stay and fight, Percy shows up and apologizes for everything he’s done. They reconcile and just as they’re about to join the rest of the school, Harry sees that Voldemort has finally arrived at Hogwarts.

This is the one where the trio follow Neville through the passageway back to Hogwarts and they are regaled with harrowing stories about what has become of the school since their absence. They are told of students being tortured as the fascist regime of Death Eaters gain power over Hogwarts. Once they arrive in the Room of Requirement, they are met with a large group of former Dumbledore’s Army members who are excited to see them and fight back against the evil forces at play. Much to Harry’s dismay, even more of his friends show up expecting to be let in on their plans to defeat Voldemort. After some convincing from Ron and Hermione, Harry finally allows them to try and help and they lead him to the Lost Diadem of Ravenclaw which he thinks might be another Horcrux. Harry and Luna sneak into the Ravenclaw common room to see what it looks like and are ultimately caught by the Carrows (who are definitely not in the movie adaptation).

On this chapter, the trio are now out of Gringotts and Harry has a glimpse into Voldemort’s thoughts. We talk about how this chapter compares to the iconic film scene, and also about how this chapter falls in the politics of communication and espionage. At the end of the episode, Adri briefly covers the Scandoval of it all.

This week, we go to Gringotts with the trio and talk about the politics of trauma and desperation. Can the multiplying and scorching treasure be a metaphor for trauma? Adri does her best to find a link. Is the dragon caged in the basement the personification of desperation? Find out as we discuss.
For some reason, we thought this chapter was going to be more action-packed than it actually ended up being. We blame the movie adaptation, which does a fantastic job of not making this an exciting action sequence.

In this episode, we talk about the intricacies of Goblin Culture: where do Goblins actually learn their version of history? Do they have a school to learn trade? Are Goblins as portrayed in the wizarding world anti-semitic tropes?
