  • In this solo episode, we’re diving deep into the experience of overwhelm—what it really is, where it comes from, and how to begin transforming it. Overwhelm isn’t just about having too much on your plate; it’s often your body’s protective response to unresolved fears or past experiences. It’s a part of you signaling that it feels unsafe.

I’ll explore how childhood experiences can shape your nervous system’s response to stress, like growing up in a chaotic or high-pressure environment where you learned to suppress emotions or strive for perfection to feel safe. These patterns often carry into adulthood, leaving us feeling stuck or flooded in situations that don’t seem to warrant such intense reactions.

Most importantly, I’ll share somatic practices to help you reconnect with your body and create a felt sense of safety, such as:

Visualizing unconditional love and nurturance to soothe the part of you that feels unsafe.Reassuring your inner child and offering the comfort they needed back then.Using grounding techniques like the Butterfly Hug to calm your nervous system.Practicing gratitude for your body’s attempts to protect you.

Overwhelm isn’t a sign that you’re broken—it’s a message that your body is asking for care and attention. By learning to listen to and respond to this message, you can begin to heal and reclaim your sense of peace.

Whether you’ve struggled with overwhelm for years or just want tools to handle life’s challenges more effectively, this episode is packed with insights and actionable practices to help you thrive.

Let’s journey together to turn overwhelm into an opportunity for growth and self-compassion.

And As I promised, a book that i have read about this subject that I think might help.... YOu can get "Overcoming Overwhelm" Thanks for listening

  • Growing up in a dysfunctional household can shape a child's coping mechanisms, creating habits that once helped them survive but later become obstacles in adulthood. These learned behaviors, while crucial for navigating chaotic environments, can hinder emotional growth, self-acceptance, and healthy relationships. In this episode, we explore the common coping mechanisms adult children of dysfunctional families often carry into adulthood and how they can unlearn these patterns for healthier living.

One common coping strategy is people-pleasing, developed to avoid conflict or rejection. While it served to maintain peace as a child, in adulthood it leads to difficulties setting boundaries, burnout, and resentment from neglecting one's own needs. Hyper-independence is another pattern many children from dysfunctional families adopt as a means of self-protection when caregivers were unreliable. This can translate to struggles with trust, a reluctance to ask for help, and feelings of isolation in relationships.

The episode also touches on how avoidance of emotions, conflict, or authenticity can severely limit growth. These behaviors, developed in childhood to protect the child from emotional pain or conflict, may prevent individuals from fully experiencing and expressing themselves in adulthood. We explore how inner child work can support healing these patterns by nurturing the parts of us that were neglected or misunderstood during childhood.

As a trauma-informed coach, I work with individuals ready to unpack these deep-rooted patterns and move toward healing. If you are ready to break free from these survival patterns and step into a more authentic, fulfilling life, I invite you to reach out for a free discovery call. Together, we can start building the tools for lasting change and healing.

  • In this powerful episode, we welcome Beverly Armento, an inspiring author, motivational speaker, and advocate for children, teachers, and the power of resilience. Beverly's life story is one of profound hardship, courage, and eventual healing. From an early age, she was thrust into the role of caretaker for her blind, artistic, and mentally ill mother. Though Beverly excelled in school and in the world, she was privately suffocated by her mother's rage, delusions, and physical and emotional trauma. For seventeen years, Beverly endured unthinkable pain and suffering at the hands of her mother. At one point, she felt so overwhelmed by hopelessness that she even considered suicide.

During what she describes as a literal "dark night of the soul," Beverly had a pivotal moment of reckoning. In the midst of this inner turmoil, she found herself mentally grappling with God, her angel teachers, and even her first-year teaching students. In this intense internal struggle, she was faced with the stark pros and cons of life itself. It was in that moment of desperation and confrontation with her own fears that Beverly experienced a profound shift. She emerged from the darkness with a renewed sense of hope and a deep understanding of the lessons her angel teachers had passed on to her: to love learning, to believe in herself, and to embrace resilience and hope.

Despite this shift, Beverly’s journey of healing was not immediate. Even though she ran away from home to escape her toxic environment, she continued to carry the weight of untreated trauma into her adult life. It wasn't until 20 years later that Beverly sought psychological help and began to confront the lasting impact of her childhood experiences. She now recognizes that trauma, especially when left untreated, can manifest physically and emotionally throughout a person's life.

Drawing on the insights of Dr. Bessel van der Kolk’s groundbreaking work, The Body Keeps the Score, which you can grab here. Beverly emphasizes how trauma isn't just a mental or emotional experience—it also has a profound effect on the body. The body, as Dr. van der Kolk suggests, keeps score of all our unresolved pain, and this manifests in various ways, including chronic illness, physical pain, and emotional dysfunction. Beverly shares how her own body bore the brunt of her untreated trauma for decades before she began her healing journey.

In this episode, Beverly candidly discusses the lifelong consequences of living with untreated trauma and the journey toward healing. She reflects on her 50-year career as an educator, where she used her own story of resilience to inspire and uplift others. As a motivational speaker and advocate, Beverly now dedicates her life to helping others understand the transformative power of resilience, hope, and the belief that we all have the ability to choose happiness—even in the face of the most challenging circumstances.

Listeners will come away from this conversation with a deeper understanding of trauma, its lasting impact, and the importance of seeking help in order to heal. Beverly’s story serves as a testament to the power of the human spirit and the strength we all have to overcome even the most devastating of experiences.

  • In this episode of Adult Child of Dysfunction: Thriving After Chaos, we’re exploring the overlapping behaviors of ADHD, bipolar disorder, and the experiences of children raised in dysfunctional or alcoholic families. These conditions and circumstances can often look similar, making it challenging to pinpoint the root cause of certain struggles. By comparing them side by side, we shed light on how to approach these challenges with clarity and compassion.

    The Overlapping Behaviors

ADHD is often characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Bipolar disorder, on the other hand, is defined by mood swings that alternate between manic highs and depressive lows. However, children raised in chaotic or dysfunctional households can display behaviors that resemble both conditions, creating a confusing picture for parents, educators, and even mental health professionals.

For example, hypervigilance—common in children from unstable homes—can mimic ADHD’s inattention or restlessness as the child is constantly scanning for danger. Similarly, mood swings triggered by environmental stressors can look like the mood episodes seen in bipolar disorder. These overlaps highlight the importance of understanding the context behind the behavior.

Other shared challenges include emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, sleep disturbances, and social difficulties. While ADHD and bipolar disorder are driven by neurological or chemical factors, children from dysfunctional families often struggle due to the unpredictability and emotional instability of their environment. Recognizing the difference is key to finding the right path forward.

Why Getting a Diagnosis is Empowering

Receiving a diagnosis, while potentially overwhelming at first, is a powerful step toward healing and growth. Here’s why:

Validation: It affirms that your struggles are real and not a personal failing, offering relief from years of self-doubt or shame.Support and Tools: A diagnosis unlocks access to resources, such as therapy, medication, or strategies specifically tailored to help you thrive.Improved Relationships: Understanding your condition allows you to communicate your needs and boundaries effectively, improving how you connect with others.Self-Awareness: A diagnosis encourages you to reflect on your patterns, triggers, and strengths, sparking growth and transformation.Empowerment: It doesn’t define you—it’s a tool that helps you take control of your life and move forward with clarity and confidence.

    Conclusion

This episode is a reminder that you are not your diagnosis, your circumstances, or your past. Whether you’re dealing with ADHD, bipolar disorder, or the effects of growing up in a dysfunctional family, understanding these patterns is the first step toward breaking free from them. With the right support and tools, you can transform your challenges into strengths and live authentically.

If you want to discover how to break free from any patterns that are holding you back and live the life you deserve, come work with me. Together, we can chart a path toward the freedom, peace, and fulfillment you’ve been searching for.

Sarah opens up about the struggles of balancing her innate people-pleasing tendencies with the needs of her younger self, who desperately sought protection and validation.

Growing up in a large Italian family, Sarah took on the role of protector and mediator, trying to bridge the gap between her narcissistic father and younger sibling. For decades, she believed it was her responsibility to parent her father while holding the family together. Sarah recounts her father’s shift from being the life of the party to creating harmful narratives, lies, and pain that fractured her family. For years, she excused his behavior with compassion and empathy for his upbringing, but by 2021, she reached a turning point. It was time to stop playing mediator and prioritize her own healing.

  • In this episode, Tammy Vincent welcomes back Elizabeth Kipp for another insightful conversation on the stigma surrounding mental illness and addiction in dysfunctional families. Elizabeth shares her powerful story of growing up with two alcoholic parents, highlighting the silence and denial that defined her childhood. Together, they explore how societal attitudes and fear perpetuate stigma, making it difficult for families to seek help or even acknowledge their struggles.

Tammy and Elizabeth also discuss the staggering statistic that one in four children grows up with an addicted parent, a figure they believe could be even higher. Drawing on insights from Dr. Gabor Maté’s The Myth of Normal, Elizabeth underscores the widespread impact of addiction and mental health issues on society.

Listeners are encouraged to reflect on how labels and derogatory terms, like those used in past generations, contributed to the stigma of mental illness. Elizabeth passionately calls for change, saying, “It’s time to get up on a mountain and scream, stop!”

Bonus: If you missed her first visit, go back and listen to Episode 22, Adult Child of Dysfunction, where Elizabeth shared her foundational experiences growing up in a dysfunctional family and how they shaped her journey.

  • In this episode, we dive into a sensitive but essential topic: understanding your relationship with alcohol. Whether you're curious about your habits, noticing patterns, or wondering if drinking has a larger impact on your life, this episode offers a compassionate space to reflect.

We discuss how alcohol can sometimes become a coping mechanism, why it’s important to notice patterns in your behavior, and how to approach self-assessment without judgment. You’ll also learn about emotional numbness, social norms, and the fine line between occasional drinking and dependence.

To help you on this journey, we provide a self-assessment checklist that you can use to gain clarity about your drinking habits. By the end of the episode, you'll have tools to explore whether your relationship with alcohol aligns with the life you want to live—and what steps to take if it doesn’t.

Self-Assessment Checklist: Evaluating Your Relationship with Alcohol

Take a moment to reflect and see which of these resonate with you:

☐ I often rely on alcohol to cope with stress, emotions, or social situations.☐ I drink more than I originally planned, or I find it hard to stop once I start.☐ My drinking habits have negatively affected my relationships, work, health, or responsibilities.☐ I experience guilt, shame, or regret about my drinking.☐ I’ve noticed I need to drink more or more often to achieve the same effect (tolerance).☐ Friends, family, or colleagues have expressed concern about my drinking, or I feel defensive when questioned about it.☐ I drink alone or in secrecy.☐ I’ve tried to cut down or stop drinking but found it difficult or impossible.☐ I prioritize drinking over activities or responsibilities I once valued.☐ I’ve experienced memory gaps or blackouts as a result of drinking.☐ I drink in the morning or use alcohol to “fix” how I feel (e.g., cure a hangover or calm anxiety).☐ I’ve engaged in risky behaviors (e.g., driving under the influence, unsafe sex) because of drinking.☐ I spend more money on alcohol than I can afford or feel anxious about running out.☐ I feel irritated, anxious, or physically uncomfortable when I can’t drink.☐ I’ve continued drinking despite knowing it’s causing or worsening health, work, or relationship problems.☐ I feel like drinking is necessary to have fun or relax.
    What to Do Next

If you’ve checked off one or more items, it’s worth pausing to reflect. Checking several items might indicate patterns you should explore further.

This episode isn’t about labeling or judging—it’s about helping you make empowered choices. If you feel concerned, consider reaching out to a professional counselor, therapist, or support group for guidance.

  • In this insightful episode, we’re joined by Sherry McClurkin, a seasoned trauma coach and expert in helping Christian women heal the emotional roots of guilt, shame, anxiety, insecurity, and the pressures of living up to unrealistic expectations. Sherry is passionate about empowering women to reclaim their time, energy, and mental well-being, and she believes that setting boundaries is one of the most powerful tools for personal transformation.

Through her 10+ years of experience as a trauma therapist and her own emotional growth journey, Sherry has discovered that many women struggle with boundaries because they’ve been conditioned to believe that setting limits is selfish, mean, or even harmful. In this episode, Sherry dismantles the stigma surrounding boundaries, especially the common belief that “I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.” This mindset often leaves women feeling drained, anxious, and overwhelmed, constantly sacrificing their own needs for the sake of others.

Sherry explains that boundaries are not about pushing people away, but about creating healthy “fences” around our emotional and mental space. Boundaries allow us to protect our hearts, make clearer decisions, and nurture the relationships that truly matter. They are essential for cultivating a life that’s calm, confident, and purpose-driven—one that reflects our true identity as empowered, Christ-centered women.

Drawing from her proven 5-step process, which integrates neuroscience, biblical principles, and her expertise in trauma therapy, Sherry shows how boundaries can help women:

Reclaim their energy and reduce feelings of guilt and shame.Set healthier limits that protect their mental and emotional well-being.Strengthen relationships by creating space for love, respect, and mutual understanding.Make confident, purpose-driven decisions that align with their true identity in Christ.

Throughout the episode, Sherry shares practical steps for overcoming the fear of setting boundaries, empowering listeners to build a life rooted in self-love, respect, and emotional freedom. She emphasizes that boundaries are not just a tool for personal growth—they are an act of love for ourselves and others.

If you’ve ever struggled with feeling “not enough” or have a hard time setting limits, this episode is for you. Tune in to hear Sherry’s wisdom on how to set loving, self-protective boundaries that build the healthy, vibrant relationships you deserve.

  • This episode explores emotional numbness, a common protective mechanism for those who grew up in dysfunction and chaos. Emotional numbness—the inability to feel or express emotions—often develops as a survival strategy in response to fear, shame, and overwhelming stress. While it may have served a purpose in childhood, it can create challenges in adulthood, such as difficulty with relationships, self-expression, and mental well-being.

We discuss the root causes of emotional numbness, how it differs from dissociation, and the long-term impact it can have. More importantly, we offer actionable steps for healing, including trauma-focused therapies like EMDR, mindfulness practices, and journaling. Building a supportive network and practicing self-compassion are also key to reconnecting with emotions and living a fuller, more meaningful life.

If you’ve ever felt disconnected from your emotions or stuck in survival mode, this episode will give you the tools and hope to begin your healing journey. Tune in to learn how to reclaim your ability to feel and thrive.

Drawing from personal experience, Michael emphasizes the importance of breaking free from negativity and embracing the abundance of support and healing methods available. He reflects on the challenges of compartmentalizing painful memories, a skill many of us develop to survive but ultimately must confront to truly heal.

He recounts a pivotal moment at age 13, wondering why his father seemed not to like him, despite being loved and admired by teachers, friends, and family friends. These experiences shaped his early years and fueled his desire for deeper understanding and connection.

Later in life, Michael faced another defining moment, realizing that working in a cubicle for decades was not how he wanted to live. His drive to make a meaningful impact led him to explore a career where he could touch lives and create positive change, ultimately choosing to become a police officer.

  • In this episode, we dive deep into a question that plagues many adult children of alcoholics and dysfunctional families: Why do we attract the wrong people into our lives? Drawing from my personal experience and years of coaching, I explore the hidden patterns and subconscious forces that lead us to replicate unhealthy dynamics in our adult relationships.

Understanding the Impact of Dysfunctional Families

Childhood in a dysfunctional household teaches us how to survive, but those survival skills often sabotage us later in life. We learn to anticipate others’ needs, avoid conflict, and equate love with uncertainty or performance. These experiences shape our attachment styles, often leading to anxious or avoidant patterns in adult relationships. Our subconscious seeks familiarity, even if it’s toxic, because it feels safer than stepping into the unknown.

Why We Attract the Wrong People

The traits we develop to cope—like people-pleasing, caretaking, and a lack of boundaries—make us susceptible to unhealthy relationships. We often gravitate toward partners who mirror the chaos we grew up with or who need “fixing,” as it gives us a sense of purpose. Emotional intensity can feel like love when, in reality, it’s just reenacting old wounds.

Fear of abandonment and rejection also plays a significant role. For many of us, tolerating mistreatment feels less frightening than risking the vulnerability of being alone. This fear makes us cling to relationships that aren’t serving us. We also tend to seek validation from emotionally unavailable partners or even narcissists, believing that winning their approval will somehow heal the unfulfilled parts of our childhood.

    Breaking the Cycle

Healing starts with awareness. When we recognize these patterns, we can begin to rewrite our stories. Inner child work is a powerful tool in this process, helping us soothe the wounds that drive our unhealthy choices. Building self-worth and setting clear boundaries are essential steps toward attracting healthy, reciprocal relationships.

It’s also important to redefine what love looks like. Love doesn’t have to be chaotic or dramatic—it can be consistent, kind, and supportive. Therapy, coaching, and support groups like Al-Anon or Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOA) can provide the tools and community needed to heal.

    Moving Forward

As adult children of dysfunction, we are not doomed to repeat the patterns of our past. With self-awareness, intentional healing, and the courage to set boundaries, we can break free from the cycle and create relationships rooted in mutual respect and genuine connection.

If this episode resonated with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Connect with me on social media or check out my free resources and coaching options to help you on your journey. Together, we can rewrite the story of your life.

Listen now to learn how to stop attracting the wrong people and start embracing the relationships you truly deserve.
