• It's Episode 22 and this week we're sharing our thoughts on the recent released This War Of Mine, from Michał Oracz, Jakub Wiśniewski and Awaken Realms. A very different take on what it means to be a war game, This War of Mine has you guiding three regular civilians through the horrors of being trapped in a city under siege, hoping to last long enough to live to see the ceasefire. It's a heavy theme and an intriguing concept, but at the end of the day the question is the same: is it fun to play?

We share some initial impressions on recent releases like Richard Garfield's SpyNet, Fantasy Flight Games' Fallout, and Isaac Childres' Gloomhaven. Note that as the latter two are very fresh, very big games, and very spoiler-sensitive, so we're remaining spoiler-free today, sharing only the briefest of thoughts before sinking more time into them in order to devote a fuller episode to each at a later date.

Other preambles include thoughts on the recent Thor: Ragnarok movie, Black Mirror, Don't Starve Together, and, of course, League of Legends.

  • In this episode we take a look back at Fantasy Flight Games' Arkham Horror: The Card Game and the completion of its first expansion cycle, The Dunwich Legacy! Is it still holding us in its grips as the original box did? Will we escape its nightmarish tendrils for greener pastures? The vast majority of the review is spoiler-free; we do touch on some very light spoilers at the end, so skip from 1:21 to 1:30 if you want to avoid that.

Before that, we take some time to gab about some of the non-cardboard games we've been on lately, as well as some of Marvel's Netflix content (spoiler-free!), cause that's how we do.

We also take a look at some high-quality, custom Arkham Horror: The Card Game playmats, themed & designed by friend of the show: Andresia "Momo Monster" Garnier. Check them out at: https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/MomoMonsterCo

  • In Episode 20, we're taking a look at CMON's latest big release: Massive Darkness! It's a big box, co-operative dungeon crawl that attempts to inject a few new ideas into the genre while still retaining the simplicity of earlier games like Zombicide. Does it work? Is there any fun to be had? We discuss!

  • Episode 18, where we sail off into the black in search of fame, fortune & glory. It's Xia: Legends of a Drift System (Cody Miller) and its 2017 expansion, Embers of a Forsaken Star (Cody Miller & Ira Fay)! Published by Far Off Games, it promises a sandbox experience in space, given players the freedom to seek their fame through whatever means they wish: explore, trade, exterminate.. It's the closest we get to playing a Firefly game short of actually playing a Firefly game. Does Xia keep the signal going, or does it get lost in the black?

Meanwhile, we engage in a variety of non-board game topics. Robert's been creating his idyllic city in Cities: Skylines while learning about hydroelectric dam physics, Judy's been watching a time-travelling crime drama, Signal, and reading the Decameron (which is soft-of kind-of getting a movie), and Joe's creating a house run by Skynet, all thanks to Amazon Prime Day. We look forward to our future roomba overlords.

  • Episode 16, where we fend off hordes of alien bugs in XenoShyft: Dreadmire, the new cooperative deck-building game from Michael Shinall & Cool Mini Or Not, and stand-alone expansion to 2015's XenoShyft: Onslaught. Does it stand steadfast, or will the horde of nit-picking review-creatures leave nothing but rubble in their wake?

We also had the chance to continue playing some more Watson & Holmes scenarios, carrying off from our previous episode, and share our experiences with some 2- and 3-star scenarios. Don't worry, there are no spoilers! Does the increased difficulty enhance the game?

There seems to be a lot of TV and movie watching lately. Spoiler-free thoughts on the recent season of Sherlock, the new Wonder Woman film, Snowpiercer..

For those interested in watching some board game-like television (seriously), we highly recommend checking out two Korean shows: The Genius & Crime Scene.

  • Episode 15, where we solve the mystery: is Watson & Holmes a good game or a great game?

We took our eyes away from the cards and dice recently to watching some shows and movies. Joe's been watching the Geek & Sundry production, Escape: in which various celebrities are placed in an escape room and the audience gets to watch them struggle in their efforts to... escape! Judy & Robert saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and argue over the reds are really as red as they can be.

Back at the table, we got to play the original, vanilla Zombicide again, and in doing so learned to appreciate the simplicity of playing with only the kitchen sink. Naturally, it's only further drumming up our excitement for the Green Horde kickstarter..

Speaking of CMON kickstarter, Massive Darkness' delivery is right around the corner and Robert is geeking out with anticipation for it. Meanwhile, Joe just geeks out over their expo in general. Are we secretly CMON shills? Time will tell..

  • Episode 14, where Joe (re)joins us to discuss some of the games we're most anticipating getting to play in the second half of 2017. With so many games coming out and being announced every month, it can be hard to keep up with every title, so we decided to take some time to share with each other what we're looking forward to the most. Joe struggled so much, he managed to sneak in an extra title! For the savvy listener, this means you can expect dedicated review episodes for the vast majority of titles on this list down the line. Excitement!

I also had the time to explore the supplementary app for Clank!, getting in a couple games of its included solo mode, and share my thoughts on that.

Then Joe questions how we go about picking new titles to add to our collections. With hundreds of new titles on Kickstarter alone, let alone titles that come through the regular retail channels, everyone has their own system of filtering the ocean of games down to a select few titles at a time.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on these subjects! What games are you hotly anticipating to play this year? Are we crazy to be excited for the titles we chose? Did we miss some super obvious choices? ... Probably.

Two corrections to what we say: Bullets & Teeth is actually from Last Ditch Games, not Space Goats Productions. Robert also confused This War Of Mine with Valiant Hearts: The Great War. The former was never offered as a free download.

  • Episode 13, the noisiest of them all, where we discuss Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure, as well as its recent expansion, Sunken Treasures. A board in my deck-building game?! Madness!

Recently, we attempted to watch Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return. A recent kickstarter success, this classic show has returned with Joel Hodgson, Felicia Day, Patton Oswalt, Jonah Ray. Watch a couple of friends making fun of a bad movie? With the recent popularity of podcasts doing that exact thing, it seems only natural for this show to come back!

Already recently played is the indie game Crawl, now available on PC, PS4 & Xbox One. Smash Brothers meets legacy board games?? Robert forgets to say so in the recording, but he really wants to see a board game that mirrors this game now.

    Enjoy!

  • Episode 11, where we sail away with Rum & Bones: Second Tide. RB:ST is a standalone, second edition of Cool Mini Or Not's Rum & Bones, and is a 2-6 player game modelled after the ever popular MOBA style of PC games... but with pirates! We share our thoughts on it - and we have lots! - and definitely plan on revisiting this title again in a future episode down the road, as it's been a contentious one for us. Our Music With Board Games segment continues with our suggestions based on what we listened to throughout our pirating affairs..

We're once again joined by Joe, who shares with us his experiences in playing Blood Rage (another CMON game!) and Guillotine (a card game from 1998, all about becoming the best guillotine operator you can be).

We also had the fortune of coming across a copy of Witness, the cooperative deduction game based on the Blake & Mortimer IP. After a solid 8 plays, we're excited to tell as many people as we can to track down a copy, and pine for it to receive another print run.

  • Episode 10, whence we descend into Inferno to save the city of Arcadia! Arcadia Quest: Inferno is a standalone expansion for the original Arcadia Quest. This week we discuss our recent play-through of the new Inferno campaign and give our thoughts on whether it improves upon the original game or not. Our Music With Board Games segment returns with our suggestions based on what we listened to throughout our hellish campaign.

Joe describes to us his recent plays of two games: Santoriniand Rhino Hero. It sounds as amazing as it's title suggests. We also share our thoughts on the Logan movie, as well as bizarre indie game on PC & consoles called Manual Samuel.

  • Episode 9, the one where we try to stay calm while engaged in submarine warfare (and fail)! Captain Sonar is a real-time, team game for 2-8 players, and we weigh in on whether it's great fun on just great stress. Our Music With Boardgames segment included some great fan suggestions, though it should be noted that the sonar soundbite used in the podcast is not from the YouTube video originally linked to us; the original creeped Robert out too much!

Joe extends his thanks to Chris Cantrell (of Riot Games) after receiving a resolution on his defective crystal (from Mechs Vs Minions). We also had the opportunity to play the older (and sadly now out of print) WarHammer 40k strategy game Forbidden Stars (from Fantasy Flight Games) and give our initial impressions. Rum & Bones: Second Tide (Cool Mini Or Not) is arriving in the mail and we gave the core box a quick spin. Also from CMON, our Arcadia Quest: Inferno kickstarter arrived in one giant shipment, and we're plugging our way through the new campaign therein. Finally, Joe saw The Great Wall: the movie where Matt Damon fights monsters on the Great Wall of China. It's a thing.

  • Episode 8, the one where we negotiate our way through New Angeles! Returning this week is our Music With Boardgames segment, covering great cyberpunk soundtracks to use with New Angeles. We received our first fan question on Facebook, asking for insights on breaking into the board game industry, and we answer it to the best of our (in)ability. Other random commentary includes our thoughts on the Lego Batman movie, the upcoming boardgame-like video game Pit People (from The Behemoth), and a recent replay of the euro classic Princes of Florence (which Robert has trouble saying).

  • Episode 7, the one where we talk about Mysterium! We also start up two new regular segments: music with boardgames and our select house rules of the week. We also fall over ourselves with excitement after receiving a surprise email from Chris Cantrell, Associate Producer at Riot Games and the Product Designer of Mechs Vs Minions!

  • Our first Appisode! In the fall of last year we went abroad and used the opportunity to play some iOS board game apps. Here we are, three months later, giving our much belated thoughts on them.

Our audio issues from the previous episode should now be resolved (extra thank yous to those who made it through it in its entirety). Now with extra dog-walking in the background! (Just can't win..)
