A Community Health Worker (CHW) is a frontline public health worker who is a trusted member of the community they serve. CHWs act as a bridge between health and social services and the community, helping to improve health outcomes and access to care.
Our goal during this episode is to discuss why training pharmacy technicians to step into the role of a Community Health Worker has been imperative to meeting the health equity demands in local communities.

Stigmatizing language may be part of our daily interactions with patients without even realizing it. It can appear in charts, regardless of race, gender, gender identity, ability, or socioeconomic status, but it has been found to occur more frequently for groups who are traditionally marginalized. How often do you reflect on the language you use with patients and how it might be interpreted by them, depending on their unique circumstances? And what are we doing as preceptors to help our residents and students understand the importance of language in their patient interactions? Listen in to learn more.

We delve into the implications of the recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, exposing how older risk models overestimate cardiovascular risk by about 50%. This overestimation has profound implications for primary statin use, insurer policies, and regulatory practices. Our discussion highlights the need for updated guidelines that reflect the most current evidence, ensuring better patient care and aligning clinical practice with the latest scientific findings.
The GameChanger
Adopting the PREVENT equations could significantly refine statin prescriptions, ensuring millions of adults receive appropriate cardiovascular risk management.

While health inequity is considered by many to be the #1 issue in healthcare today, we’re still just learning to talk about it as part of pharmacy education. As preceptors, health equity and social determinants of health may not have been a language we learned as part of our education, and yet we rely on preceptors to help develop our learners in this area. What is our role in incorporating conversations and education around health equity and social determinants of health to better educate our learners in improving the lives of patients?

Today's episode is an absolute must-listen to. The FDA's decision to approve the drug, Mifepristone, has been escalated in a lawsuit to the U.S. Supreme Court. And, last week, in a unanimous 9-0 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected the challenge to the drug's approval. Today on our podcast, we are answering what exactly is happening with the drug Mifepristone, the legal challenges associated with this medication, and how this U.S. Supreme Court ruling directly impacts pharmacists today.
Regardless of your position on this topic, knowing and understanding the history and why the mifepristone conversation is happening is critical.
By the time you finish listening, you'll be inspired to take immediate action to join your local and state-level pharmacy association.
