I posted this show originally in 2017 however since the student protests fighting for the rights and protection of Palestinians, I thought it would be prudent to repost this episode.
Many pundits have likened this time to the turbulence of 1968, so let’s look back on how artists were inspired by all the movements to end war, and for social change.
This episode explores the post Dr. King Era of riots, protests, and continued discourse for one America for all. Vietnam was raging overseas, and young boys were coming home in body bags, limbless or mentally scarred forever. The divide between races, gender, wealth, and power was increasing at a rapid rate. This was Nixon’s America; hardworking families trying to make ends meet. It was a time of double-digit unemployment and inflation wrapped up in stagnation. This all sounds too familiar to the present day although today's America comes equipped with its own nuances. This story was told so eloquently by the artisans of the day through song.
Can America learn from the mistakes of the past?
This episode features the works of Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The O’Jays, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Sly & the Family Stone, and others.

This episode dives into the year 1978, the year that funk & disco peaked in urban and dance culture. Still in my teens, it was all about house parties, school dances, and all-ages clubs. This particular year covers one of my most memorable years of high school life. It was about the latest dances like the Freak, the Hustle, the Rock, and many others. Pierre Elliot Trudeau and Jimmy Carter ruled our borders, Star Wars and Saturday Night Fever were released late in the prior year but still dominated pop culture. Afros and three-piece suits governed my look, and it was also the year I started dee-jaying.
So, let’s go back in time for an hour or so and reflect on the way it used to be long before we were beholden to our current responsibilities.

BMS/ LADIES FIRST
In today's episode, we salute the women of music, particularly in the genre of r&b. As beautiful as music can be, the business of music is often the opposite as it closely adopts the worst of society's traits. For many decades while women were celebrated in music, they still had to take a back seat to men. Fortunately, we have learned from the mistakes of the past, but we still have a way to go. This is 'Her' story, this is our story.
Stay strong my sister.

I thought it would be interesting to assemble not only Prince’s work but also those who worked with him.
His first ripple of influence of the Minneapolis sound was of course those artists that grew up with him as he was honing his craft. Those former bandmates went
on to create their own brand of magic which of course influenced others. Even in my own life while managing bands in the late 80's, our number one influence was Prince and all those trying to capture his unique sound.
From the songs we covered to the wardrobe we chose, to the swagger we displayed on stage.
We all wanted to become a loyal member of his royal family.

This episode covers my specific memory of 1980, the start of a brand-new decade. For me, that year of music was synonymous with going to the roller rinks in Scarborough and throwing down what you had on wheels (if you could).
Do you remember the funky skate, the moonlight skate, or "shoot-the-duck"? This was also a pinnacle year for what is now known as 'old school funk' as well as the surging growth of rap music. It was a great time to be young with great friends and most of all fantastic memorable music.
This is my 1980.
