It has been a busy time for ethics and integrity news in recent months: executives going to jail, companies receiving massive fines and penalties, CEOs being dismissed or stepping down, and class action lawsuits. But perhaps the unlikeliest ethics scandal is the cheating allegation that rocked the 2024 World Conkers Championship. In his editorial from the upcoming Fall issue of Ethisphere Magazine, Editor in Chief Bill Coffin explains how even in a world as small and insular as that of competitive conkers (what *is* conkers, anyway?), conflicts of interest and speak-up culture matter just as much as they do at any Fortune 500 organization. Why? Because no matter what the stakes, ethics is everything.

TD Bank, the 10th largest bank in the U.S., has pleaded guilty to conspiring to fail to monitor financial transactions, which led to narcotics traffickers laundering some $670 million in illegal earnings through the bank. To quote U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, âby making its services convenient for criminals, TD Bank became one.â For this, TD Bank will pay a combined $3 billion in fines and penalties. In this special LIVE episode, Ethisphere Executive Chair Erica Salmon Byrne discusses the Department of Justice September 2024 the Evaluation of Corporate Compliance Programs - the guiding principles by which the DOJ determines if a company's compliance program is well-designed, if the program has the resources and support it needs to do its job, and whether the program works in practice.
The ECCP was last updated in March 2023, and any update to it has important implications for corporate ethics and compliance officers. And this update contains important language around promoting speak-up culture; anti-retaliation policies and whistleblower protection, incorporating proactive risk management, incorporating internal and external lessons learned into risk assessment updates, how to manage the potential compliance risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI), and more.
