As the maritime industry strives to achieves ambition decarbonisation targets against the tightest of regulatory timelines can switching existing vessels to cleaner fuels buy time?
With thousands of large ships potentially still running on fossil fuels by 2050, retrofitting engines for new fuels could be crucial for shipping’s net-zero trajectory. But how ready is the technology and industry to carry out conversions?
In this podcast, Riviera Maritime Media's Executive Edwin Lampert, is joined by the lead authors of Lloyd's Register's new Engine Retrofit Report and other industry stakeholders to unpack the the demand for retrofitting, the uncertainties surrounding fuel availability and policy signals, and the potential role of retrofits in achieving net-zero shipping.
Tune in to hear:
Why engine swaps emerge as a key climate measure despite limited LNG retrofit uptakeWhat milestones place methanol close to conversion scalability while ammonia lagsHow customising kits to various engines and fuels aids flexibility but risks complexityWhy enhancing shipyard skills and capacity emerges as a barrier for rapid transitionsHow charter premiums, carbon pricing and fuel costs shape investment appetitesWhat ‘ready’ labels and proposed rating schemes indicate about modification effortsWhy container and cruise vessels are seen as leading candidates for retrofitsHosted on Acast. How can bulk owners and operators balance short-term commercial pressures and long-term climate imperatives? What investments, strategies and collaborations can best position fleets for deep decarbonisation? What role do class societies and other stakeholders play in enabling the transition?
This podcast will deliver meaningful insights on what it takes to ‘green’ bulk shipping while balancing commercial realities and climate imperatives.
The dry bulk shipping industry is at a crossroads. Bulk carrier owners and operators must pursue deep emissions cuts, while maintaining uninterrupted services.
New regulations like IMO’s 2050 net zero target and the Carbon Intensity Index will force change, yet adequate zero-carbon fuels and technology remain years from being market-ready. How can new regulations, alternative fuels, efficiency gains, and innovations like wind assisted propulsion enable the transition?

Buoyant crude and product tanker markets, delivery dates of 2026 and 2027 for new tonnage and continued uncertainty on fuel choices at the newbuilding stage have propelled sales and purchase activity in the second hand tanker market and set asset values soaring.
This development brings key questions into sharp focus.

What are the key investment risks? What do green corridors and the Silk Alliance do to address this?
Options are limited right now and with high risks. Most are unable to invest in long-term solutions.Collaborations with governments and ports are needed in green corridors to support the investments. Many aspects and challenges remain, but we need to gain exposure and education on them as a first step to solving them.

In a podcast moderated by Lloyd’s List managing editor Richard Meade, the Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) and Lloyd’s Register bring together industry experts to talk about why the sustainability of marine fuels needs to be taken into account alongside price, availability and technical feasibility considerations.
SSI recently published the white paper Defining sustainability criteria for zero and low carbon marine fuels which sets out sustainability issues and principles surrounding marine fuels under consideration for shipping’s decarbonisation. SSI member representatives will talk about how sustainability criteria can contribute to the development of industry standards and certification schemes to assure and facilitate the selection of – and demand for – sustainable marine fuels.

In this podcast, we discuss liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a fuel and how it has come to prominence in the past decade. We consider how it’s addressing the industry requirements as well as the risk and opportunities associated with its use. Our experts also cast an eye into the future, assessing LNG’s role in the fuel mix given an evolving regulatory landscape.
In this conversation hosted by Nicola Good, the head of Brand and External relations for Marine and Offshore at Lloyd’s Register, we are delighted to welcome Stavros Hatzigrigoris the Technical Director of Zodiac Maritime and Panos Mitrou, Lloyd’s Register’s Global Gas Segment Manager.

This time around, we talk about how seafarer wellbeing has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our discussion will be framed by the recent survey Lloyd’s Register (LR) undertook with the UK Chamber of Shipping and the Mission to Seafarers that assessed the impact of COVID-19 on the maritime workforce.
This online survey was targeted at employees across the global maritime industry and ran for three months between June and September 2020.

This time around, we are talking about remote capability and how the COVID-19 crisis has transformed the maritime industry's appetite and acceptance of remote technologies. Across the board, classification societies have seen an increase in remote surveys, but our conversation will focus on developments; how equivalence must evolve to enhance the efficiency of remote capability. What technologies will we need to employ to drive further efficiencies in remote capability, and what will the next step-change look like?
Nicola Good, Global Head of Brand and External Relations for Lloyd's Register, hosts a conversation with Ralph Juhl, Senior Vice President, at Hafnia and James Forsdyke, Head of Product Management for Lloyd's Register.

January’s implementation of the 0.5% global cap on marine fuels progressed relatively smoothly as most industry stakeholders had done their homework and were prepared for the transition. But the start of 2020 has not been straightforward.
The ferocity of the COVID-19 outbreak and the resulting widespread economic disruption, spreading from east to west, has interrupted supply chains and affected all the main shipping sectors. The months ahead will be testing as businesses grapple with the fallout and inevitable financial challenges.
Having passed the IMO2020 regulatory test, what are the key hurdles facing shipowners and other stakeholders reliant on the bunker supply chain? LR and Petrospot get expert views on what to expect in the months ahead.
