Dr. Marc Sklar — a.k.a The Fertility Expert — is a natural fertility specialist helping couples get pregnant for 20 years. He’s mission is to help you feel hopeful and confident about your fertility journey again.
In addition to his Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, Dr. Sklar trained at the Harvard Medical School, Mind/Body Medical Institute. I spend a lot (a lot) of time talking about cervical mucus and basal body temperature as the fertile signs that can tell you the most about your fertility and ovulation.
Did you know there is another sign that can also give you incredible insight into your fertile window? It’s one that I swear by whenever I’m a little confused about what might be happening in my cycle.
It’s the position of your cervix, which changes significantly throughout your cycle and can really help you to troubleshoot if your mucus or BBT aren’t super clear. It’s not essential, but can be very helpful.

To lube, or not to lube? That is the question.

There’s a question that has suddenly started to pop up in my DMs and inbox. A lot of you are asking about how to safely use lubricants when trying to conceive, so I thought it was time to answer your questions.
If you’re trying to conceive, you want to make sure you’re doing everything possible to maximise your chances. Something that a lot of you are certainly starting to consider is the effect that your standard supermarket lubricant could have both on your fertile cervical mucus as well as his sperm. It’s no secret that exercise is good for us.
But here is the thing not a lot of people are out there saying but I am SURE you are probably feeling or thinking.
How the *EFF* do you exercise when trying to conceive or during early pregnancy?
And that is keeping people stuck.
Because so many women aren’t sure how to do it safely, they err on the side of caution and don’t do anything, which isn’t ideal. Then we have another group of women who are potentially over-doing it, which also isn’t ideal.
So in this podcast episode, I’m sharing my fast and furious tips on how to exercise during that preconception window when you might be wondering if, when and how you should be exercising; as well as how to exercise safely during early pregnancy and the first trimester.

Meet Danielle. She has worked as a nurse practitioner in the US for 10 years. She struggled with amenorrhea, infertility and was told she had PCOS. Being a medical practitioner, Danielle was incredibly frustrated that she “couldn’t fix herself” and was eventually diagnosed with hypothalamic amenorrhea. She conceived with IUI but tragically her pregnancy ended at 23 weeks. After this traumatic experience of going through labour but not bringing a baby home, she was determined to learn as much as she could to heal herself. She dove into functional medicine and went on to conceive 2 children naturally.
This experience affected her so greatly, that she changed her job and moved into a more functional and integrative role as a nurse practitioner. Danielle now helps women to optimise their health so that they can have the best outcomes possible.Connect with Danielle:

I speak with women all the time who have said to me that their doctor won’t investigate potential issues with their fertility until they’ve been trying to conceive for 12 months with no success; that they need to have had more than 1 miscarriage to be referred to a specialist, to just stop stressing, give it time and it will happen! Even women who are experiencing unsuccessful IVF cycles are usually just booked in for the next one.
Women are not getting the support and encouragement they need to feel in control of their fertility. Sadly, women are not routinely taught about preconception care and daily factors that could be impacting their fertility.
Many reproductive conditions, many issues with ovulation and your cycle, many of those traditional PMS symptoms associated with having a period that you dread every single month are all related to an imbalance between our hormones. And we can absolutely treat a hormone imbalance. Sometimes a few small changes are enough to have a big impact, sometimes you may need artificial hormones in one form or another to address the issue, sometimes it’s harder to treat, but the key is investigating what has caused the imbalance in order to correct it.

For most of our lives, we have been told that getting pregnant is easy.
It seems ridiculously unfair that we actively avoid getting pregnant for years and years, and then struggle when we are actually ready to conceive.
More and more couples are turning to reproductive technology to assist with pregnancy. But this isn’t always necessary for many couples who use it, nor it is necessarily a guarantee of success. People tend to see this as a back-up option, but it’s only effective 25% of the time.

Preparing for a subsequent pregnancy is a whole different ball game compared to first time around.
There will be days where you wonder why on earth you want to add another little bundle to your family! How will you ever manage another one? Are you ready? Are they ready for a little brother or sister? How can you spread the love between more than one?
I know I swing from “yes absolutely” to “no way” a few times a day!
Preparing for baby number two, three and beyond certainly seems to involve a lot more mental gymnastics than first time around, but the physical preparation should be the same.
