    This one is a spicy, ranty one ALL about the language we use around food and our bodies.

    We moralise the food we eat. We talk about feeling 'guilty' if we eat something 'bad'. Weight Watchers count certain foods as 'sins' and we identify ourselves as good if we've eaten in a certain way and 'bad' if we have dared to indulge in a food that might taste good or satisfy our taste buds.

    What about bodies? I want to get "in shape". I'm so "out of shape". You look good, have you lost weight? (Yes I think we've all said and thought that one.)
    How about "you're not fat, you're beautiful"?
    What does that say about fat people in general? Why can't we be fat AND beautiful? Why is it that only 'thin' bodies are acceptable when it comes to societal beauty ideals?

    One comment that was made to me in my teens really stuck with me: "Don't worry Christine, not everyone can have a perfect body". These words stick and they hurt and may have ramifications for many years.

    How are we as women marketed to? Get toned! Do Pilates for those long lean muscles. Get strong but not beefy. Not too strong. Just strong enough. Take up space but not too much space. Just the right amount. Make sure you're not overdoing the cardio or lifting too heavy. Do Pilates, or hot yoga, make yourself smaller but stronger.

    It's ENOUGH!

We chat about real weight-inclusivity in fitness, our work with Kim Stacey at Body Image Fitness, plus-size fitness wear, doing the thing you think you cannot do and navigating a fitness industry that simply isn't set up for you.

    This episode was inspired by an instagram post, which spoke about the messy middle between diet culture and aesthetic goals and whether you could pursue fat loss specifically, and NOT promote diet culture at the same time.

    This is certainly a nuanced issue. We live in a dieting culture which worships thinness above all else and where weight bias is prevalent. Of course, we are going to think about changing our bodies and conforming to the current cultural ideal. But at what cost....?

    Why are we pursuing fat loss? Does that align with our values? What about letting our bodies take up space? What about body respect? What about attunement and our internal hunger and fullness cues? What about the fact the restriction is by far the biggest predictor of future weight gain?
    What about the myriad of other benefits movement brings and how we want to FEEL in our bodies.

    What about the racist roots of fatphobia?

    What about the concept that we are MORE than a body?

    Weight loss is not a behaviour so can we pursue health promoting behaviours, and let our bodies take care of the rest?

    We dig deep this week and would LOVE to hear your thoughts.

    Welcome to episode #2 of our 'YOUR Bodies' series, where we invite members of our community.

    Liana is a 45 year old mum of 2 from Nottingham, who started her journey towards neutrality and recovery from Binge Eating Disorder during the pandemic in 2020.

    She realised that there has to be more to life than obsessing over the scales and trying to shrink her body with exercise in a bid to make herself happy.

    We are so grateful to Liana, who speaks really candidly and opens up about her recent struggles underlining the fact that healing from an eating disorder is just not a linear process.

    Wow this one was juicy.

    I have to say, Ela and I were both ON it for this episode😘

    Ela had been finding in sessions that many of her clients were scared, not just of weight gain but of what digging deeper into their dieting history would involve.

    Leaving the perceived 'safety' and 'control' around dieting or 'watching our weight' can make us feel uneasy.
    Trusting our body and our intrinsic cues takes time. Bri Campos talks about body image healing being an 'excavation' rather than a 'journey' and there is certainly no destination.

    Abi has reclaimed the term fat for herself, and despite struggling with body image and confidence in the past, she is now a strong social justice and fat liberation advocate.

    Have you heard the term 'Hot Girl Summer'? Yes, thank you diet culture for once again making a season all about women's bodies, and making us feel that we are somehow wrong and need to change!*

    In response to the surge in popularity of "weight loss" drugs such as Ozempic, some influencers have taken it upon themselves to let us know that we DON'T need to partake in these drugs because if we just walk 15,000 -20,000 steps per day, we will achieve the same result - once again conflating exercise with weight loss.

    We have several problems with this advice. Why should we be chasing thinness?

    Can movement not just left alone?
    Can we not walk because it blows the cobwebs away, and we get a chance to connect to nature?
    Can we not move because it's good for our physical and mental health and brings us joy?

    Why does the end result of movement need to be shrinking our bodies when we know that exercise alone is not an effective weight loss tool?

    Movement holds numerous benefits which have NOTHING to do with weight loss!
    And weight loss is not a behaviour. So if you want to FEEL better in your body this summer, focus on the things that make you feel good.
    Movement, that brings you joy.
    Food that nourishes your body and is satisfying. Fostering friendships and feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin.

    Your body is not the problem.

    This week I grabbed my good friend Ela Law from @elalawnutrition to chat about the Your Fat Friend documentary, by Jeanie Finlay which followed Aubrey Gordon across 6 years, since she released an anonymous blog from an account called @yrfatfriend .

    Aubrey has since written 2 New York Times Bestselling books (You Just Need to Lose Weight and What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat) and along with Michael Hobbes (adamantly NOT on instagram!) has created something truly special with the informative, endearing and forever engaging Maintenance Phase podcast .

    Ela and I chat about weight bias and how it permeates our society. Neither Ela nor I have lived experience of being in a fat body and both of us were truly touched by being able to see the world even for a brief time through Aubrey's eyes.

    At one point in the film, Aubrey alluded to the fact that she has been struggling with an eating disorder but really struggled to get the help and support she needed. Eating disorders do not discriminate. They impact people of all body sizes, of all ages, ethnicities and genders.

    We chat about repairing our relationship with food AND finally finding peace with our bodies when we live in a dieting culture and thinness is a value praised above all else. It is the air that we breathe and the sea that we swim in.
    Ela and I then segway into the world of Intuitive Eating.

    I invited Amanda Bullat onto the podcast this week to tell HER story.

    Amanda became interested in nutrition while training as a competitive distance runner in her early 20s but her passion for running and food became a double-edged sword, as she developed her own disordered relationship with food and exercise.

    After many years of personal struggle and a real commitment to recovery, she was able to reclaim her love of food and movement. *

    In this episode, we focus on when is enough enough, when it comes to movement. When we start un-dieting our relationship with movement, how do we actually start listening to our bodies, and break free from the earn-and-burn cycle?

    This week's guest is non-diet dietitian Krista Beck Muench.*

    Krista came from a dieting background where she exercised to burn calories and shrink her body and where she was caught in an unrelenting cycle of exercise, tracking macros and restriction. It was only when a friend introduced her to Intuitive Eating that Krista realised that there might be another way.

    Now she's on a mission to help women find acceptance in their today bodies and rebuild that sense of trust that is often disseminated by diet culture.

    This episode is one of my favourites as we jumped around a lot (popcorn brain!) but covered a great deal of issues that are very close to my heart.

    This conversation was different for me. It challenged me and was confronting.

    Maybe I take movement too seriously and need to find that playful element once more.....

    Jamie Carbaugh (aka fitragamuffin) is a non-diet Virtual Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor. She guides folks to learn to enjoy regular movement by shifting their view of what traditional exercise ‘should’ look like.

    Her message of ‘movement for more’ celebrates all the reasons to exercise beyond the scale. She currently resides in Germany and is a mother and a military spouse.

    We chat about rediscovering our playful side and not just finding the joy but the silliness, the cameraderie and allowing movement to be what it is and not having to count.

    What if our metrics were if we were feeling better, had more energy or were able to sleep better. What if just managing to enjoy movement after years of using exercise as punishment was classed as 'progression'?

    Jamie asks the questions that challenge the current fitness culture rhetoric and her passion for folks finding play and fun is so infectious.

    I'm flying solo this week and am talking about a subject VERY close to my heart.

    I have struggled with anxiety and depression for as long as I can remember and I am not one to pretend 'everything is ok', rather I am sharing my own story in the hope that it will resonate with some of you and help you realise you are not alone.

    Movement has been part of my mental health 'toolkit' for a long time but my relationship with it has shifted quite considerably.

    I used to GO GO GO because I literally needed the distraction and was living in survival mode or fight or flight from morning to night. During the pandemic I trained as a Pilates teacher and slowed the feck down. WOW! That was not and is not easy for me to do but boy, was it a revelation.

    So many folks are pushing themselves in the guise of 'movement is so good for my mental health' but when is too much, too much and why does excessive exercise start to take it's toll on our mental health.

    Courtney Gioia is the founder of Loyobo, a community for women who are sick of trying to be smaller. This ISN'T about weight loss for Courtney. This is about learning how to love your body and feel strong so you can take up space in your body AND in your life.

    It was such a joy for me to chat with Courtney and throughout our conversation there were pinnacle points, where Courtney's words hit home and her lived experience shone through. We are not here, in the non-diet space, saying once you ditch the diet, life is easy. Far from it. Thin privilege is real and sometimes finding food freedom and learning to accept your body as it changes, is like swimming upstream. But as Dory says....just keep swimming.
