JJ, Juice, John K Johnson has given me the honor of his time and is here to preach the good word. I first met JJ at Training Days in Alexandria, VA, and his humble spirit, Godly demeanor, mentorship, and over 40 years of firefighting experience shines through in this one. When in in-extremis situations, there are many metabolic and emotional parameters at play. We are rarely “just” in a physical test, or rarely “just” in a psychologically stressful incident. Both our physical prowess and our mindset are intermingled and at use while on the fireground, amplifying each other at once. While we discussed the five attributes of the holistically prepared firefighter, to boil things down further, there are three main components that are required during high-risk environments: expertise in our profession, physical prowess, and the emotional regulation to endure and overcome the in-extremis event without relative harm to yourself or your team.

Hey everyone, in this episode we sit with my dear friend, Barry Floyd, endearingly known as B-Rock. He has 27 years in the fire service, and we discuss his upbringing in Baltimore City, how he stayed away from the street life in the 80’s, but how he also experienced that side of it when he was shot in the head at the age of 18. Through a year-long recovery, it’s what inspired him to join the fire service. We dive into his experiences during a 2008 Mayday when a garden apartment roof dropped on top of him and his officer (one of my other buddies) and the lessons learned (I’ve also attached a youtube video of that fire after they had exited the structure). Also, what it means to be a senior firefighter, creative ways to build connection with your people, and so much more. He is certainly one of those people that leaves it better than he finds it, and I am so incredibly grateful that he gave me some of his time. Lastly, B-Rock mentioned a handful of names during the podcast that have shaped his personal and professional life. Men and women who have shaped the fire service and have shown commitment and given opportunity. Please stay tuned until the end to hear his personal thanks and shout-outs.

In this episode we discuss how you must pass through the 3 levels of the continuum before gaining mastery. Too often we try to skip steps. You need to become the utility fielder before you can become the master, especially when it comes to in-extremis readiness.

Erik Vidal works for Miami-Dade Fire & Rescue and is a military veteran, separating from the US Army as a Chief Warrant Officer 2 and UH-60 Black Hawk pilot. He leads the UNCIVIL brand as well as TrainInGear. Most notably though, he doesn't define himself by these labels, he's much more than that. His drive is admirable, using his platform to showcase the need for physical and mental health, humility, grit, determination, conviction, confidence, patience while also reaching necessary extremes, discipline, and resilience. He is full of one liners and stoic principles. Mission over self. Truly an honor that he took some time out of his day to spend with me. Grateful.

“Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself.”
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Under stressful conditions and in PPE, firefighters should be able to execute and troubleshoot job specific tasks with comfort and ease to effectively mitigate the issue at hand. This is where knowledge, skills, and abilities all culminate. Further, you must possess and then act on the appropriate skill, at the appropriate time, to affect the desired outcome.

On this week’s episode, we have Celeste Flynn and Sara Laird, part of the team behind the non-profit, the Phoenix Advocates. They have a truly powerful message that they deliver in a raw and meaningful way. We discuss the mission of their group, and how it stemmed from losing their husbands in fires from 2018 and 2021. We lean in on a lot of hard topics, and we are able to learn from them as they unpack their lived experiences in a graceful way. Though, this is not one that you want to miss, we will be experiencing life lessons through their lens, please be mindful and prepared for the hard topics to come. If you would like to get some more background on the 2018 fire that claimed the life of Lt. Nathan Flynn, I would encourage you to first listen to episode 15 and 02. I have attached links so you can see and support their mission. Give them a follow and please consider supporting them and their upcoming events.
