In this episode, Dr. McMinn and Coach Lindsay are visited by Elizabeth Ellison , a Postpartum Nurse & Fertility Care Practitioner. Together we explore womenâs reproductive health with a focus on understanding the menstrual cycle as a vital indicator of overall health.
The episode emphasizes the Creighton Model System. Elizabeth explains how this model helps women identify patterns in their cycles, enabling them to better understand their bodies, recognize irregularities, and address root causes of health issues such as hormonal imbalances, cycle irregularities, and fertility issues.
Key Points Discussed:
The Menstrual Cycle as a Health Indicator: Tracking a womanâs cycle provides insights into hormonal health, fertility, and other potential health concerns. Empowerment through Body Literacy: Women can learn to observe and interpret their cycles, enabling proactive healthcare, and avoiding reliance on symptom-masking pharmaceutical treatments.NaproTechnology (Napro): This medical approach works alongside the Creighton Model, offering restorative treatments for reproductive issues. Effectiveness for Family Planning: The Creighton Model is 99.5% effective for avoiding pregnancy with perfect use, and 96.8% with typical use. For achieving pregnancy, 98% of couples with normal fertility succeed within six cycles.Holistic and Empowered Personalized Care: The process empowers women to identify irregularities and work with providers to address root-cause issues. The Downside of Hormonal Contraceptives: Hormonal contraceptives, like the birth control pill, have been around for many years, and many women seem to do fine with it. However, while this method is quite effective, hormonal contraceptives may have many unwanted side effects. It is important to educate women as to their options, including more holistic methods, such as the Creighton Model in order to enable them to make wise and educated choices as to what may work best for them.In summary, this podcast is about educating and empowering women to become active participants and to take control of their reproductive health. We hope that you enjoy the podcast.

This episode contains an interview with inventor, author, and entrepreneur Jim Klopman about the important issues of fall prevention and balance training.
Falls are the number one cause of accidental injury and death in those over 65 years old. Many victims of non-fatal falls are left with severe functional impairments, often requiring long-term care. In the year 2020 the price tag for falls to our health care system in the US was over 81 Billion dollars.
Balance training is a proven method for reducing falls, and it is also a cornerstone of training for improved athletic performance for sports of all kinds. Standing, walking, running, and even sitting would be impossible without balance. It is also a proven fact that mobility is profoundly related to morbidity and mortality
On today's show we will discuss some of the causes of falls, medications that affect falls, home modifications to reduce falls, fear of falling, proper footwear, the effects of certain medical conditions on falls, fall risk assessment, the role that vision plays in balance, the effects of aging on falls, neuroplasticity and neuro-rehabilitation, and the utility of balance training for fall prevention and for improved sports performance. We will also discuss Jim Klopman's book "Balance is Power" and his SlackBow and SlackBlock training devices for balance training and fall prevention.

The podcast "Wellness Connection MD" focuses on providing evidence-based, commercial-free wellness information. It aims to empower listeners with practical solutions for optimizing health. On today's show we proudly announce Dr. McMinn's new book, "McMinn Sinusitis Microbiome Protocol," which offers a natural approach to helping patients with chronic sinusitis and rhinitis by focusing on reestablishing a healthy sinus microbiome. Unfortunately, the traditional treatments for sinusitis, which include antibiotics and surgery often fail. This leaves millions of unfortunate patients with no hope as they continue to suffer with the misery of chronic sinusitis, often for many years. Dr. McMinn offers a tested, safe, and natural alternative therapy based on cutting-edge science, and on a functional and integrative approach. The heart of the protocol involves five steps: some basic principles of nutrition and lifestyle to improve sinus health, and overall health, weeding out bad bacteria, preparing the sinuses by breaking down biofilms and reducing inflammation, seeding the sinus cavities with beneficial bacteria, and then feeding these good bacteria with the specific prebiotic nutrients that they need to thrive and to become the dominant organisms in the sinus cavities. "McMinn Sinusitis Microbiome Protocol" is available on Amazon as an ebook or paperback. Hopefully, this will be helpful to you or someone that you care about.

This is the first of a two-part series on raising healthy children in our modern-day world. In this episode we focus on healthy eating. In part two we will explore many other aspects of Raising Healthy Children.
Our guests, Lindsay Mathews and Rachel Norgan are both Registered Nurses, and Lindsay is also an IIN certified Health Coach. Together they bring to us their wisdom from many years of professional experience in treating, counseling, and coaching children and families. They are both also in the trenches of being active, thoughtful, and engaged moms of some pretty amazing young children. They underscore the significance of teaching children how to navigate life's challenges on their own, rather than simply providing them with solutions. Lindsay and Rachel emphasize the importance of kids understanding the "why" behind healthy choices, rather than just focusing solely on rules and regulations. They also highlight the value of modeling healthy behaviors for our children and fostering an understanding of stewardship towards their bodies and health.
We hope that you enjoy the show.

Wellness Connection MD is THE evidence-based podcast on all things wellness. This episode is a follow-up to our previous show on the Top Ten Supplements for all-purpose use. However, in this edition Dr. McMinn and Coach Lindsay discuss specific supplements that may be helpful for our most common and devastating diseases. Dr. Peter Attia's excellent book "Outlive" describes the Four Horsemen of diseases: Cardiovascular disease, Cancer, Neurodegenerative diseases, and Metabolic dysfunction (like diabetes). These diseases are the leading causes of death for most Americans. In our usual evidence-based fashion we present to you some supplements that may be helpful for these conditions., along with some evidence to back up our recommendations. In addition to the Four Horsemen, we also provide some helpful hints on two other common health problems, which include arthritis and osteoporosis.
Coach Lindsay points out that supplements may be quite helpful, but they never replace a good diet. Also, attend to the other fundamentals of lifestyle medicine, such as exercise, restorative sleep, stress reduction, and toxin avoidance.
Always keep your healthcare provider in the loop before starting any supplement regimen, and consider cheking for drug/supplement interactions.

In this episode of the Wellness Connection MD podcast, Dr. McMinn takes an evidence-based look into the world of acupuncture alongside Dr. Margot Walbert, a Doctor of Oriental Medicine. Dr. Walbert shares her expertise on acupuncture's philosophy, training, techniques, and its efficacy in treating various conditions. She starts by reviewing some of the fundamental TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) tenants such as Qi (life force energy), and the five elements. She also discusses how in Chinese medicine they are always looking for the root cause of the problem, similar to a functional medicine approach.
Dr. Walbert walks the listener through the process of clinical evaluation, devising a customized treatment protocol, and what it is like to experience an actual acupuncture session. She emphasizes the importance of patient comfort and the mind-body connection.
Dr. McMinn reviews the evidence, and Dr. Walbert discusses her experience with successfully treating such conditions as pain, nausea, migraines, gut issues, asthma, allergic rhinitis, high blood pressure, menstrual cramps, infertility, and anxiety.
The conversation then touches on various acupuncture techniques such as needling, cupping, acupressure, ear acupuncture, electroacupuncture, moxibustion, and injection acupuncture.
Because of its evidence-based success, acupuncture is gaining traction in mainstream medicine and is now recognized as a safe, effective, and holistic therapeutic option. Esteemed and prestigious institutions like Harvard, Mayo Clinic, and Johnâs Hopkins School of Medicine now offer acupuncture, and the World Health Organization recommends acupuncture for over 100 conditions.
Dr. Walbert's wisdom empowers both patients considering acupuncture and aspiring acupuncturists.

On the Wellness Connection MD podcast wet strive to present to you practical solutions to your health care concerns. In this episode we describe a step by step guide to achieving your optimal wellness goals . Beginning a wellness journey may seem daunting. Where do I begin? How can I get from here to there? Dr. McMinn and Coach Lindsay break it down for you, along with a powerful graphic illustration called Dr. McMinnâs âArch of Wellness.â You can find this at McMinnMD.com under the Documents section, or at
https://img1.wsimg.com/blobby/go/62e64053-aa44-44d0-99a1-972bd0a23d2f/downloads/Arch.jpg?ver=1711505564628
The two legs of the arch represent an empowered patient and an engaged provider working together to achieve optimal outcomes. The two legs of the arch meet in middle at the keystone, which ties it all together. The keystone represents Behavioral Change. It is the fundamental way that we live our lives that ultimately determines our health status. As the old saying goes "you canât keep doing the same thing and expect a different outcome." It is by attending to the foundations of wellness which we call âlifestyle medicineâ that we are able to become the very best version of ourself in mind, body, and spirit.
The patient and the provider each has a crucial role to play when it comes to achieving our goals. Dr. McMinn and Coach Lindsay along with the âArch of Wellnessâ break it down for you step by step. The details of the path may differ for each person, but the basic steps remain the same. Depending on where you are on the wellness curve, it may seem daunting to begin, but the sooner you start the better. Once you've had that heart attack or stroke you can't ake it back. So don't wait till it's too late. Get started and donât make it overwhelming. Take your time, and start with the low lying fruit.
The mantel of empowerment awaits all of us. It is there for the taking. As patients each of us must become the âcaptain of our ship.â As providers we must become fully engaged in helping each patient achieve his or her optimal wellness goals. The path for the patient begins with awareness, and proceeds from there. The path for the provider begins by being a great listener. Fully hear the patients concerns in a nonjudgmental fashion, and then begin to employ the knowledge and skills that you have learned over the years to partner with the patient in order to arrive at the best possible course for optimization.
We wish you well on your âPath to Optimal Wellness.â

Podcast summary
In this episode of Wellness Connection MD, Dr. McMinn take a deep dive into the root causes of disease and how an understanding of these root causes can be used as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool as a part of a functional medicine approach to a patient.
Think about your own health, or if you are a provider then think about the patient in front of you, then keep asking the question "What is the underlying root cause of the problem." Then use the list of root causes outlined in this podcast to help you come up with the answers. I call this the "why" approach to medicine. This approach may help you better understand the problem, and thus come up with more effective solutions.
Along the way, Dr McMinn also provides some insights and practical solutoins pertaining to each of these root causes of diseae.
At the end he summarizes all of these into the four fundmental causes of disease. It is where these four factors come together that we see disease emerge.

Welcome to the launch of the Wellness Connection MD podcast, where Dr. McMinn and Coach Lindsey become your partners on a quest for optimal wellness. On our previous show, the Functional Medicine Podcast, we discussed a wide variety of healthcare subjects, from a functional and integrative medicine point of view. The purpose of this episode is to introduce ourselves to any new listeners under our new name. We would also like to share with you our philosophy of healthcare and to explain to you why we take the approach that we do, and how we got here.
Our overall goal is to bring to you up-to-date, honest, vetted, unbiased, evidence-based information about health and wellness, along with practical solutions, in order to empower you to overcome your healthcare challenges, and to optimize your health in mind, body, and spirit.
However, as our population ages, and we are faced with evermore chronic diseases. The disease- pill model is simply not working for these individuals and for our society as a whole. Legions of patients with chronic diseases who are falling through the cracks of modern medicine. These people are often desperate to be heard, to be taken seriously, and to have their concerns adequately addressed. Instead we should be focusing more on a preventive, lifestyle-based, functional, and integrative approach. As a medical community we need to begin to "think different." We need to remain evidence-based, while opening our minds to other viable therapies beyond drugs and surgery. We also advocate that this shift in thinking be accompanied by a renaissance of "loving kindness" in healthcare. Providers and patients would all benefit.
We are hopeful for the future of health care. When we first embarked on the path toward a more holist style of medicine, there were very few providers in our community who were like-minded. However, 17 years later we see that patients are blessed to have many options for integrative and functional healthcare. In fact we see that many of our most esteemed healthcare institutions now have dedicated integrative or functional programs, such as Harvard, Duke, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Vanderbilt, and UCSF. Integrative and functional medicine are gaining credibility across the nation and around the world. Patients are demanding a different approach, and healthcare is listening. We will all be better off for the change.
We hope that you will join us on this journey to optimal wellness on Wellness Connection MD. Take care and be well.Support the show

Unraveling Adrenal Fatigue
In this insightful podcast Dr. McMinn and Coach Lindsay, along with special guest Rachel Olsen, will delve into the science of adrenal fatigue. We will break down the controversy surrounding this important subject, and we will explore how it influences various aspects of our physical, mental and emotional well-being.
We will also explain why the term "adrenal fatigue" is somewhat of a misnomer, and that the term HPA Axis Dysfunction is a more accurate and descriptive name for what is really going on with these patients. By reviewing the mainstream medical literature we will demonstrate that this is a legitimate disease, causing very real symptoms, despite the fact that this condition is often not recognized by the mainstream medical establishment.
In this podcast listeners will gain a comprehensive understanding of the HPA axis. We discuss the physiology, as well as the symptom, work-up, diagnosis, and treatment of HPA axis dysregulation. We also share with our listeners a wide range of stress management strategies, resources, as well as nutritional, medical, and many other approaches to help our listeners address the challenges posed by HPA axis dysfunction.
So, tune in to gain actionable insights, and to embark on an evidence- based journey toward better health and resilience in the face of modern day stress.

In this episode of the Functional Medicine Podcast we present to you a detailed discussion of men's sexual health with our special guest Nurse Valerie Padd, certified sexual educator and coach. Sexual well-being is a part of the fabric of overall health. A vibrant sex life is your birthright, and yet it is very common for men to struggle with various sexual health concerns. These concerns may be devastating to the affected individuals. Yet, men's sexual issues are stigmatized and swept under the rug. Men are often embarrassed and even ashamed to discuss these issues and seek help. They are left to feel frustrated and inadequate, and are often forced to suffer in silence, not knowing where to turn for help.
In this episode of the Functional Medicine Podcast we unabashedly address these issues head on. We offer a range of practical solutions for our listeners, so that they can better understand men's sexual health concerns, and move forward toward a more fulfilling sex life.Valerie Padd applies the "bio-psycho-social" model to a man's relationship with his own body, his mind, his partner, and the world around him. She then utilizes a functional and integrative approach to address these concerns. Men's sexual health is not just a personal matter; it's intertwined with societal expectations, spiritual beliefs, cultural norms, and the ever-evolving landscape of human relationships.
Societal pressures have historically placed unrealistic expectations on men. These expectations have only been exacerbated by the omnipresence of pornography in our society. By opening up a dialogue on men's sexual health, we aim to identify and dismantle the stereotypes that perpetuate shame, fear, and ignorance. Ms Padd exposes and confronts the myths surrounding men's sexual health, and she delves into a wide array of specific topics ranging from low desire, to erectile dysfunction.
In this podcast we hope to empower men with information to help them foster healthier connections with themselves and their partners.
We hope that you enjoy the show and learn something that is helpful to you or someone that you care about.Support the show

On the Functional Medicine Podcast we attempt to help you achieve "optimization" in every aspect of your life, and your intimate life is no exception. As a functional medicine doctor, I heard the concerns of my women patients, and sadly, the majority of them complained of issues related to sexual health. The medical community has largely ignored these issues, and we have taught these women to suffer in silence. Today on the show, we are excited to present to you Ms. Valerie Padd, RN, a sexual health expert and certified sex counselor. Together we explore what a healthy thriving sex life looks like, and we also discuss many of the common problems that women experience in the sexual arena. We discuss pain with intercourse, along with low desire, difficult arousal, problems with orgasm, and many other sexual health concerns. Throughout this discussion, we also present practical solutions for improvement in these areas. So sit back, tune in and enjoy the show!
