Episodes

  • It's episode 445, and our last regular Geektown Radio podcast of 2024, as Gray (somewhat unexpectedly!) joins Dave to chat about all the latest TV & film news and reviews!

Gray steps in as a last-minute replacement for Matt, who has come down with some sort of lurgy (get well soon!), and amazingly actually has a film review, as he went to see 'Wicked' this week. He also chats about catching up with some TV shows such as 'Doctor Odyssey', 'A Man on the Inside', 'The Diplomat', 'Smoggie Queens', 'Cheaters', and... 'Is It Cake?'... Meanwhile, Dave chats about catching up with the latest series of 'Outlander', along with finally stepping into the acclaimed Netflix animated series 'Arcane'. He also reviews whether the new Paramount+ prequel series 'Dexter: Original Sin' manages to "kill it" with its opening episode.

Over in the news updates, we have a few cancellations and a surprising number of Netflix renewals which makes a nice change from the, usually murderous, streaming service. We also chat about the dire state of Sony's Spider-man "universe", the possibility of a new ‘Prison Break’ series, Henry Cavill's Warhammer 40k series, Bryan Cranston returning to his comedy roots, and lots more! Listen below!

  • It's all the fours with episode 444 of the Geektown Radio podcast as Darryl From Hollywood North News joins Dave to chat about all the latest TV, film and games news & reviews!

As always Darryl brings an interesting mix of mainstream and slightly more obscure film and TV reviews along with him! Firstly he kicks off with the movie 'Werewolves Within', which is available now on demand, and follows that with his review of the recently released Prime Video series 'Cross'. He has also picked up the first season of Netflix dramedy 'The Lincoln Lawyer', and moves on to a new legal drama which has recently dropped onto Sky Witness and NOW, 'Matlock'. Meanwhile, Dave reviews the new Netflix (and surprisingly festive!) thriller from the brilliant Joe Barton, 'Black Doves' starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, along with the really fun new Disney+ series 'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew'. He also chats about what he got up to at the recent MCM Comic Con Birmingham.

Over in the news updates, we have one cancellation and a surprising number of renewals for the time of year, including the Paramount hiring 'The Agency' again, more adult adventures on Disney+ from Jilly Cooper, and more murdering from the ubiquitous Ella Purnell. We also have news on a 'Scrubs' revival, whether another spin-off from 'The Rookie' is a good idea, the showrunners from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ doing English period drama, and lots more!

  • Episode 443 of the Geektown Radio podcast sees Dave dig Gray out from under his mountain of work to return to the show and chat TV, film and games news & reviews!

It's been a number of weeks since Gray has been on due to his schedule being rather manic over the last few weeks, but he's finally back and brings with him a stack of TV reviews. We chat about a couple of recent Netflix series, 'Nobody Wants This' which stars Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, along with 'Perfect Couple', the latest series starring Nicole Kidman, alongside Liev Schreiber. He also runs through a host of other series he's been catching up with recently. Meanwhile, having finally come to the end of his Baldur's Gate 3 run, brings a review of Frostpunk 2. On the TV side, he reviews the wonderfully weird 'Interior Chinatown' on Disney+, and the new Ted Danson/Michael Schur Netflix comedy 'A Man On The Inside'.

Over in the news updates, we have all of last week's cancellations and renewals, including the return of 'The Jackal', more horror in '‘From', and Apple giving out renewals before the first season of a new show even airs! We also have lots of premiere dates for things such as 'What We Do In The Shadows' and ‘Yellowjackets’, plus the return of Noah Wyle to an ER, and lots more! Listen below!

  • We return for episode 442 of the Geektown Radio podcast, and Matt from Entertainment Talk joins Dave (who, due to some recording issues, sounds a little like he's in a well...) as co-host to chat TV, film and games news & reviews!

Matt returns to the show, with TV, film and game reviews! First up is 'Umbrella Academy' Season 4, which has been out for a while, but he has only just gotten around to watching. He also reviews 'Joker: Folie à Deux'... does he hate it as much as everyone else? Lastly, we have 'Final Fantasy VII Rebirth', the first of the FF series to actually "click" with Matt. Meanwhile, Dave has TV and game reviews, although unfortunately, there were some recording issues and his mic is a little more "echoey" than normal, so apologies for that! However, he does have reviews of 'Tracker', 'Devil’s Hour' and 'Silo', both of which returned recently for second seasons, along with new Prime Video drama 'Cross', plus some discussion about 'Baldur's Gate 3'.

Over in the news updates, we bring you all of last week's cancellations (or lack of them) and renewals, plus saying goodbye to Freevee, the BBC giving Gary Lineker a red card, Robbie Williams as a CGI chimpanzee, a new drama from Dan Fogelman (This Is Us, Only Murders In The Building), plus premiere dates for ‘The Night Agent‘, 'Mythic Quest' and more! • We return with a packed episode 441 of the Geektown Radio podcast, as Darryl from Hollywood North News joins Dave to chat TV, film and games news & reviews!

Darryl is back with his usual eclectic mix of TV shows to review. He starts off with two Prime Video shows. First 'Paris Has Fallen', the new extension to the 'Has Fallen...' movie franchise, and the first project not to star Gerard Butler. Next, he reviews 'Citadel: Diana', the first of the spin-offs set in the Russo Brothers 'Citadel' Universe. • After last week's little break to recover from MCM/EGX, we are back ith episode 440 of the Geektown Radio podcast! Matt from Entertainment Talk joins Dave as co-host to chat TV, film and games news & reviews!

Matt returns to the show, and one of his first loves, 'Hollyoaks'. We discussed a few months ago how the soap was about to go through some massive changes which included firing half the cast and a big shake-up in format and storylines. Now that has all happened, Matt updates us with his thoughts on how it has been going for the 30-year-old series. Meanwhile, Dave has stories from the MCM Comic-Con and EGX Gaming Festival and his thoughts on this combined version of the events. He also reviews the new Ryan Murphy drama 'Doctor Odyssey', which dropped onto Disney+ UK recently, 'Star Trek: Lower Decks' which returned for its final season, Netflix series 'The Diplomat', and the finales of both 'Agatha All Along' and 'Only Murders In The Building'.

Over on the news updates, we bring you all of last week's cancellations and renewals, including Amazon cancelling James May's travel plans, and Apple cancelling a new show. We also have the entire Marvel release schedule for the next 12 months on Disney+ and cinema, the obscure place you can watch ‘Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent‘ in the UK, the return of ‘Jack Ryan’, a possible location for a new '9-1-1', news of Amazon’s Live-Action ‘God Of War’ series showrunner, and Sir Michael Parkinson returning from the dead (kinda...)! • We are back with episode 439 of the Geektown Radio podcast, before we take a little one-week break due to MCM/EGX at the weekend. But first, Matt from Entertainment Talk joins Dave as co-host to chat TV, film and games news & reviews!

Matt returns to the show, standing in for Gray, who is swanning around New York right now, and brings with him reviews of a couple of TV shows. Firstly, 'Sweetpea', which you can watch in the UK on Sky & NOW, followed by the beloved Netflix series 'Heartstopper', which returned this week for a new season. Meanwhile, Dave has also been on Netflix catching the third season of 'The Lincoln Lawyer', before hopping over to Disney+ for the new season of '9-1-1' (and the infamous "Bee-nado"), along with their adaptation of Jilly Cooper's 'Rivals'. He also reviews the unique city-building game, 'Memoriapolis'.

Over on the news updates, we bring you all of last week's cancellations and renewals, including AMC cancelling Giancarlo Esposito's new series, Apple renewing two shows, even more 'Rick and Morty', and Paramount ordering more 'Star Trek'. As it was NYCC this weekend, we have a number of announcements from that Comic Con, including some 'Star Trek' and 'The Boys' casting, air dates for the return of several superheroes, a new Netflix drama from the brilliant Joe Barton (‘The Lazarus Project’, Giri/Haji’), and a new Channel 4 zombie comedy! • It's a new week and time for episode 438 of the Geektown Radio podcast and Robert from Entertainment Talk joins Dave as co-host to chat TV, film and games news & reviews!

It was a holiday this week in the USA, which means Robert returns to the show and has his usual eclectic mix of TV and games to chat about. He is currently on something of a cooking show binge and highlights one particular series, 'Crime Scene Kitchen', hosted by Joel McHale. We also discuss the mass of sports on US TV at the moment, particularly the state of the WMBA following the departure of star player Caitlin Clark. On the gaming front, he chats about the 'Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster'. Meanwhile, Dave has been catching a slew of season finales, including Apple's 'Bad Monkey' and 'Slow Horses', Season 2 of Prime Video's 'Rings Of Power', along with Season 1 of 'Ludwig'. He also reviews new shows 'Disclaimer' on Apple TV, Sky's 'Sweetpea', and the return of 'Outer Banks' to Netflix.

Onto the news updates, and we bring you all of last week's cancellations and renewals, including more series "cancelled by Netflix" (trademark pending) and why that is becoming such a problem for them in the eyes of consumers. On the flipside, they also renewed a couple of big hitters as well. We also get some updates on some WB projects such as the return of 'Ted Lasso', and another 'Big Bang Theory' spin-off, plus a reboot of ‘Scrubs’, a follow-up (rather than a remake) to 'The Office', and casting for HBO's 'Lanterns'! • Welcome back to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I’m chatting with Sharlene Royer, the Assistant Stunt Coordinator for utterly brilliant ‘Shogun’, which recently won a record-breaking 18 Emmys - including a very well-deserved one for Outstanding Stunt Performance!

Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s 'Shƍgun' is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village...

It is an outstanding drama, available on Hulu in the USA, and on Disney+ in the UK and other territories. It's well worth watching and catching up if you haven't seen it yet, as it appears it will be returning for two more seasons following its record-breaking Emmy win.

Born and raised in Quebec to a Haitian mother and French Canadian father, Sharlene was a dancer from the ages of 7 to 18, before moving into modelling and acting. However, following a meeting with legendary Stunt Coordinator, Alan Oliney, she was encouraged to try stunt work, and found her calling. She soon became a very sought-after stunt performer being requested to double stars such as Halle Berry, Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Williams and many more.

On 'Shƍgun', Sharlene discusses her work on the epic drama as Assistant Stunt Coordinator, working alongside her boss (and life-partner) Lauro David Chartrand-Del Valle, developing the hugely complex Emmy-winning “cannon” scene, melding VFX, physical effects and stunts for the “earthquake”, plus location scouting, stunt coordinating in the pandemic and lots more.

If that wasn’t enough, Sharlene was also Assistant Stunt Coordinator on season one of the hit CBS drama ‘Tracker’, for which she became the first Black, Female Stunt Coordinator to win a Leo Award from The Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation of British Columbia. She talks about working with lead actor Justin Hartley (and his photographic memory), and also working with Justin alongside guest star Jenson Ackles... who sound like they were as much fun together as you'd expect!

Still want more? She also worked on the wonderfully fun DC superhero drama ‘Legends of Tomorrow’, performing the stunt work for Hawkgirl, so we touch on that in the interview too! Sharlene's other projects include things such as 'The Man In The High Castle', 'Never Let Go', 'X-Men: Days of Future Past', 'Siren', 'See', 'The 100', 'The Rookie', and lots more!

  • We're back with episode 437 of the Geektown Radio podcast and Matt from Entertainment Talk joins Dave as co-host to chat TV, film and games news & reviews!

This week, Matt discusses finishing the first season of 'Yellowjackets' which he has been catching up with on Paramount+, and we also chat about the trailer for 'The Last Of Us' Season 2 which was recently released. Meanwhile, Dave brings reviews of 'The Ark' Season 2 which has now begun airing on Sku Sci-fi, 'The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon' Season 2 (aka 'The Book Of Carol'), which began airing on Sky Max, and 'CSI: Vegas' which returned for its final season on Alibi. They also discuss 'Deadpool & Wolverine' which Dave has finally seen now it is out on home release, and ponder where the "merc with a mouth" may show up next...

Onto the news updates, and we bring you all of last week's cancellations and renewals, including another show cancelled by Netflix (they really should have that trademarked), Apple renewing Colin Farrell's bonkers PI series, and a last ride with 'Billy The Kid'. We also have a stack of premiere dates for upcoming shows, a new gig for a beloved 'Criminal Minds' cast member, a ‘Reacher’ spin-off, and a (possibly ill-advised...) attempt to make a UK version of a beloved classic US sitcom!

  • Welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I’m chatting with Laurent Spillemaecker, VFX Supervisor for VFX company FOLKS about their work on the fourth and final season of the Netflix hit show ‘The Umbrella Academy’.

The final season sees our dysfunctional family of heroes, consisting of Luther (Tom Hopper), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Diego (David Castañeda), Viktor (Elliot Page) and Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), trying to avert yet another apocalypse. Warning, there are SPOILERS below, and in the interview itself, so if you haven’t seen the final season yet, go and watch!..

    Still here?

Okay, so if you remember the end of Season 3, the gang were left in a new reality, but also powerless. Whilst they do find a way to get their powers back, they also discover, they are the problem
After various, very "Umbrella Academy" type things happen, Ben, and his new girlfriend Jen, end up merging into a giant blob monster which threatens to destroy the Earth
And that’s where Laurent and his team at FOLKS come in...

FOLKS have been involved with 'The Umbrella Academy' since season one, but for the final season, the team received its most significant mandate yet. They were responsible for conceptual pre-production work to establish the creatures' identities, post-viz, final elaboration of complex shots, and creation of character and environment assets, animation, simulation, and compositing.

Along with creating the monstrous version of Ben and Jen, they also enhanced the environment for a Christmas-themed sequence, adding crowd characters, vendors, snow, and more. Plus they picked up some other shots, such as Five’s “blinking”, some of the laser eyes FX, and other superpowers and background work.

Outside of ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Laurent has previously worked on a huge range of projects including Sin City, 300, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Blade Runner 2049, Thor: Ragnarok, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and lots more.

  • We return with episode 435 of the Geektown Radio podcast our "film reviewer" Gray joins Dave as co-host to chat TV, film and gaming news & reviews!

Gray, once again, lives up to his reputation as "worst film reviewer" by not reviewing any films (although, I'll let him off this one as it's the start of term for his other job as a teacher!) However, he does bring a string of TV show reviews including the second season of BBC's 'Sherwood' and the fourth season of ITV's 'Grace'. He also chats about 'Celebrity Race Across the World', 'Taskmaster', and the Apple TV shows 'Bad Monkey', 'Time Bandits' and 'Slow Horses'. Meanwhile, Dave has been delving into the geekier programming with this week's launch of 'The Penguin' on Sky and 'Agatha All Along' on Disney+. He also reviews 'After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun' on Disney+ and 'Tulsa King' on Paramount+.

Moving to the news updates, we bring you all of last week's cancellations and renewals, including the cancellation of a number of genre shows, and one ITV quiz series. We also have a stack of premiere dates for shows coming up on UK TV in the next few months. Plus we discuss casting for the new ‘Black Mirror’, ITV bringing out a new thriller, Sally Wainwright's new BBC show, more casting, this time for a Syfy comic book adaptation, and lots more! • We are back with episode 434 of the Geektown Radio podcast and Matt from Entertainment Talk joins Dave as co-host to chat TV, film and games news & reviews!

It's been a few weeks since Matt has been on the show, but we begin with a discussion about some massive changes in a (nearly) 30-year-old British institution... 'Hollyoaks'... (and yes, it is that old!) While Dave hasn't watched for years, Matt brings some news of the utter craziness going on with that soap, including a huge time-jump and the axing of over 20 characters. Outside of UK soaps drama, he also reviews the Paramount+ series 'Yellowjackets', and Netflix animated series 'The Dragon Prince'. Meanwhile, Dave has been spending hours (...and hours) building factories in the utterly brilliant 'Satisfactory', which released into 1.0 this week. He also reviews new BBC drama 'Nightsleeper', and the final outing for Clarkson, Hammond and May, in 'The Grand Tour: One For The Road'.

Moving over to the news updates, we bring you all of last week's cancellations and renewals, including the stalling of 'Good Omens', ITV booking more ‘Red Eye’, and the BBC still having 'Daddy Issues'. We also discuss the the surprises (and no surprises) at the 2024 Emmy Awards, a new horror from Ryan Murphy, and a new comedy from Jon Brown and Armando Iannucci. Listen below!

He's also been out to the cinema to catch 'Twisters', and also been out and about at conventions, as he reviews Starfury's 'Witchbomb II'. Meanwhile, Dave has completed 'Star Wars Outlaws' story, so updates us on that, and reviews the opening episode of 'Slow Horses' Season 4. He also reviews Jeff Goldblum's new series 'Kaos' on Netflix.

Moving over to the news updates, we bring you all of last week's cancellations and renewals, including the loss of another firefighter drama, the ending/evolution of '‘Bosch', and more 'Only Murders...'. As Robert co-hosts Gaming Talk over on Entertainment Talk, chat this week is a little more gaming heavy, but given there has been a big game release with 'Star Wars Outlaws', that's no bad thing! Dave has been playing through it so gives us a review, whilst they also discuss the state of AAA game releases at the moment, and how Outlaws managed to launch with (comparatively...) few issues. Robert also chats about zombie game '7 Days To Die', and a game which is possibly the complete opposite of that! Meanwhile, Dave has been catching up on some recent TV with the return this week of both 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' for Season 2 and 'Only Murders In The Building' for Season 4. He also reviews the 2nd Season of Netflix comedy 'That '90s Show'.

  • Welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I’m chatting with Jina An & Shirley Song, the composers behind Netflix's brilliant adult animated series ‘Exploding Kittens’.

If you haven’t yet caught ‘Exploding Kittens’, the series is inspired by the beloved card game from Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal webcomic, Elan Lee, and Shane Small. After a meeting in heaven, there is a general consensus that Earth sucks, so God (voiced by the wonderful Tom Ellis from ‘Lucifer’) gets fired and sent to Earth to reconnect with humanity. The catch? He’s trapped in the body of a chubby house cat. As part of Godcat’s rehabilitation, he moves in with a dysfunctional family and tries to solve their problems, but ends up spending a lot of time chasing laser pointers. And to top it off, Godcat’s next-door neighbour, who is also a cat, turns out to be none other than his nemesis, the Antichrist. It is brilliant, hilariously funny, and Season 1 is all on Netflix right now!

Jina and Shirley have been composing together pretty much since college, and were tasked with creating a soundtrack that captures the show's explosive energy. This also involved them touching on a huge array of musical genres like 8-bit nostalgia, energetic Cajun flair, heavy metal rock, and both choral and orchestral scores to bring the madcap adventures and quirky characters to life.

Outside of ‘Exploding Kittens’, the duo are also known for working on the beloved Netflix series ‘XO, Kitty’, and have a number of other projects coming up which we talk about in the interview.

  • We are back with episode 431 of the Geektown Radio podcast and Dave is joined by Matt from Entertainment Talk to chat TV, film and games news & reviews!

As Daryl's internet is still down (someone wake up Talk Talk's tech support!) Matt is back on the show this week, and has a couple of animated series for review.

He's been working his way through 'Solar Opposites' and has just reached the infamous "voice change", so we discuss that. He's also catching up on the beloved 'Archer', as he's a few seasons behind. Meanwhile, Dave has been looking at some newer series, and reviews Apple show 'Bad Monkey', and 'The Walking Dead: Dead City' which just landed on Sky in the UK. He also discusses the 3rd and final season of 'Vikings Valhalla', and reviews the film 'Inside Out 2', which just came out on home release.

Moving over to the news updates, we bring you all the last week's cancellations and renewals, including Netflix actually renewing something before the first season has even aired, and Disney cancelling a Star Wars series. We also discuss a possible return of 'Scrubs', Mike Schur and Ted Danson reuniting for a new Netflix comedy, James Spader returning to the MCU, and lots more! Listen below!

It's been a couple of weeks since Gray has been on, and, being our film reviewer, he has managed to bring his thoughts on a movie, this time it's 'Despicable Me 4'. He also covers a number of TV shows including reviews of Channel 4 drama 'Suspect' which returned for Season 2 recently, limited drama 'Alice & Jack', also on Channel 4, Japanese reality show 'The Boyfriend' on Netflix, and ITVX reality-jumping dramedy 'Slip', which shows off a lot more of the lead actress than Gray was expecting! Meanwhile, Dave discusses the 2nd Season of 'Interview With The Vampire' which can be found on iPlayer, 'Solar Opposites', which is back for its 5th Season, and Apple TV+ series 'Time Bandits' from Taika Waititi.

Moving to the news updates, we bring you all the cancellations and renewals which have happened over the last week, including Netflix actually renewing a couple of freshman shows, and a whole lot more 'RuPaul's Drag Race'!
