Storm Bert wreaks havoc across the railway with heavy flooding and high winds causing major disruption for trains. Richard visits Northampton station, which experienced major flooding when the River Nene burst its banks. Here’s just a snapshot of some of the problems:
Great Western Railway was running very limited services at the start of the week and advising people not to travel. Greater Anglia stopped running from Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport and Cambridge, along with other routes. The River Nene burst its banks at Northampton, causing severe disruption to London Northwestern and Avanti West Coast. Transport for Wales had widespread disruption across their network. Northern Rail services were cancelled on some routes because of heavy flooding. West Midlands Railway ran fewer trains. And ScotRail had to put some travel restrictions in place too.A new Network Rail and South Western Railway initiative is tackling leaf fall and wheel slip on the network.
Plus… the Young Railway Photographer of the Year competition opens for entries.

On November 7th, Green Signals was live in person and on YouTube for the very first time at the Railway Industry Association (RIA) Annual Conference, joined by special guest Chris Green.
Chris is a career railwayman in both the public and private rail industry. Among his industry achievements are creating the ScotRail brand during his time as General Manager Scotland and then Network SouthEast when Managing Director (MD). He also became MD InterCity before privatisation and then Chief Executive Officer Virgin Trains, where he introduced the new Pendolino and Voyager fleets.
This is a recording of that live broadcast. Join us to hear one of the most experienced and celebrated railwaymen of his generation, who has led transformational change both at British Rail and in the private sector. Chris will reflect on whether lessons from the past are still relevant today.

On the evening of October 21st, two Transport for Wales Class 158 trains were involved in a low-speed collision, right alongside the A470 main road, near Llanbrynmair (east of Machynlleth) in Powys, Mid Wales.
Sadly, one passenger has died and 15 others were taken to hospital, with what have been described as non-life-threatening or life-changing injuries.
In this short bulletin, we lay out the facts as we understand them at the time of recording on October 22nd and explain what investigators will be looking for to establish what the causes of the collision were.

Locomotive Services Ltd has a uniquely comprehensive collection of locomotives at their main headquarters in what was once Crewe Diesel Depot. We were privileged to have the chance to tour the site and find out more about the incredible work they do preserving such a comprehensive collection of railway assets for future generations, in what they describe as the 'Noah's Ark' of the railway.Owned by Jeremy Hosking, LSL is part of the wider Locomotive Services Group, encompassing well-known brands InterCity, Blue Pullman, Saphos Trains, Statesman Rail and Steam Dreams. And if you need more persuasion to watch, here's a flavour of their locomotive collection that we feature in the film:Class 47 D1924 47810 Crewe Diesel DepotClass 47 D1948 47712 Lady Diana SpencerClass 50 50050 FearlessClass 20 D8118 20118 Saltburn-by-the-SeaClass 20 D8132 20132Class 43 43047 Midland Pullman (Midland Blue Pullman) HSTPeppercorn A2 60532 Blue PeterGresley A4 Pacific 60007 Sir Nigel GresleyClass 45 Peak D67 45118 The Royal Artilleryman5-BEL Brighton BelleClass 55 Deltic D9000 55022 Royal Scots GreyClass 40 D213 40013 AndaniaLMS Royal Scot 4-6-0 46100 Royal ScotGWR King 4-6-0 6024 King Edward IGWR Castle 4-6-0 5029 Nunney CastleClass 121 55022 960014 Flora Bubble CarStanier Black Five 4-6-0 45231 The Sherwood ForesterMembership: If you want to see even more from Green Signals, including exclusive content, become a member and support the channel further too.
