  • „We have to make it mainstream. Like there is no other way" - Anna Wohlrab, DingsDumsDumplings

The topic of food waste - or better anti-food waste - has popped up a lot in my life lately - and I’m so grateful that (apart from all the daunting numbers of how much food is being wasted) it mainly came up with a positive solution in tow.

Usually in the form of a dedicated group of people, who tackles this issue, without waiting until governments or the big players out there do something. They have an epiphany that there’s just too much food waste and we gotta do something about it. Baaam!

That’s exactly what happened to today’s interview guest & her co-founders. And I’m so excited that we finally make this interview happen with Anna from DingsDums Dumplings (@dingsdumsdumplings)!

Saving food alone is great, but then there’s the question what to do with all these 5 million tons of edible food that us Germans throw away each year? How to turn them into something that’s tasty and extends its shelf life even further?

Together the three young founders, Jillian, Mauritz and Anna found a way to make it happen: As DingsDums Dumplings, they are creating super delicious dumplings from surplus food.

In this interview you'll learn about:

The entire thought process & trial and error sessions that happened before the actual launch of DingsDums Dumplings The moment that triggered the three to quit their jobs & to do something about food waste How important it is to focus on the core thing: a strong product (that looks great, tastes delicious) How to deal with non-believers in your environment - and proving them all wrong One thing Anna is most proud of at the moment Who or what inspired her most on her way Her secrets to overcome challenges and always stay motivated How Jilliane creates new recipes on the spot over and over again How to be in for the long game Why it’s important to surround yourself with the right people The power of starting small & convincing the big players The meaning of being awarded by the Federal Government Some big future plans of DingsDums Dumplings, e.g. to conquer supermarkets And of course heaps of more personal anecdotes & insights

Hope you’re ready for an episode that leaves you inspired & hungry for more!

  • The wait is over! After a little summer break we’re back with a brand new episode. And I'm 100% sure that it’s going to switch on your inner light and belief in the good people in this world!

    What do you think:

How can something so simple as a tiny sun-shaped solar lamp the impact the lives of billions of people ? Why can micro-entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa be much more powerful than financial aid? How can anyone of us leverage the connections we have to be part of something that matters? And how can we keep up our flame of motivation when things get tough?

That’s just a mini-preview of all the inspiration bombs Felix drops in this episode. Extremely proud to present you another Berlin-based certified B-Corp with a fascinating story. If you haven’t heard of it yet, Little Sun (@ilovelittlesun) is a social business spreading clean, affordable solar energy around the globe.

Just a couple of mindblowing numbers to get you into the scene: Since Little Sun started in 2012, it has

Sold 661,578 lamps sold worldwide Changed 1,648,386 lives off-grid Built up new opportunities for 600+ African entrepreneurs Saved an insane amount of $35,531,865 on energy expenses in off-grid households Reduced 134,572 tonnes of Co2 emissions

That was in December 2017, so their impact has been growing even bigger since. Little Sun has also won a competition by the United Nations Development Program for access to clean energy in Senegal, launched the Little Sun Foundation and - an image that can hardly be topped in beauty - brought together artists, musicians, and activists in New York in the eve of COP23 to urge policymakers and political leaders to join the fight for climate action. Imagine 2,800 people holding up Little Sun’s, creating a collective work of art that stands for a solar-powered sunrise…..

I loved chatting to Felix - he has such a bright personality, is full of integrity, radiates genuine excitement for the opportunities we have & adds exactly the right dose of humour to things - which I find is SO important to really move the needle forward and tackle the big problems out there. Plus, he’s a loving dad and shares so many personal insights about his journey Felix also mentions heaps of other great impact projects AND gives some big shout outs to you guys, the listeners - including a burning question that maybe some of you could help answer in the end. So make sure to listen carefully and check out the show notes.

  • Making up for the long wait for a new episode, Claudi got Raphael Fellmer (@sirplus.de) in front of the mic. To many of you, especially those German-speakers, and those who are following the anti-food waste movement a bit, I probably don’t have to introduce him: He is one of Germany’s biggest food activists, he went on a money strike, he’s written a book called “Happy Without Money”, given tons of talks, co-founded the platform foodsharing.de - and now founded an amazing new startup, Germany’s first food outlet called SirPlus.

Raphael and I only met last November at the re:Blog conference "re:MIND", that brought together around 100 influencers who care about sustainability, to discuss what sustainability actually means and how it could possibly work in big multinational companies...

Raphael gave this super inspiring talk, loaded with passion, emotion, gratitude and just so authentic and powerful… I think everyone was totally captured. He’s someone I truly admire for his values, his beliefs and his perseverance. If everyone would be a little bit more like him, we could solve a lot of our world’s problems in no time.

WHY WE NEED STARTUPS LIKE SIRPLUS?

Raphael and his team are putting heaps of passion into SirPlus - and that’s really really necessary when we look at the numbers: 50% of edible food is being wasted in Europe! 50% ! In Germany, that's about 1 truck per minute - and with the food that's thrown away, we could feed all hungry people 4 times !!

Sounds daunting, but Raphael Fellmer is the living proof that change is possible and everyone everywhere can do something. Want some positive numbers? SirPlus already saved more than 300 tons of food from landing in the bin = that equals 750,000 meals!! That’s huuuge - and it only started 6 months ago. They’re looking for a new shop space by the way, so if you know anything or have a space, get in touch!

IN THIS PODCAST EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT:

the story of Raphael’s 5-year moneystrike & a moneyless journey through Mexico what happened that led him to such a radical experiment the realization that there are two sides to money & other big learnings why he believes so strongly in our generation why overwriting what we learned can sometimes take a while the what’s, how’s & why’s of SirPlus empowering people to be the change they want to see in the world (like Ghandi said) the darks side and bright side in every human being the blessing of failure & how to grow from it why dogma entitlement & need to be replaced with compassion and empathy

...and heaps more! Promise, this episode will fire you up with energy & once you finished listening you gonna jump up and make change happen. Get ready for Raphael Fellmer from SirPlus!

  • For this kick-off episode of 2018, Claudi sat down with the inspiring Vera Günther, co-founder of Mimycri (@mimycri). Mimycri is a social startup that is really one-of-a-kind and totally expanded my awareness of what is possible in the field of circular economy - which, as you know, I’ve been diving in a lot lately through our circular economy tours.

A new year is usually kicking off with lots of hopes, plans and dreams - and if you are dreaming of a greener future, where people are just kind to each other, smile more, love and respect one another and love and respect our beautiful planet - be assured that you’re not alone in this. If you still think that we’re not enough to truly matter: trust me, everyone of us has the power to move things out there. Even if it’s just you or a small group of people.

The best proof is my guest on the show today, an incredible female social entrepreneur and passionate environmentalist: Vera Günther, the co-founder of Mimycri.

    SOME QUICK FACTS ABOUT MIMYCRI

Mimycri consists of a bunch of dedicated people, reclaiming leftover rubber boats - which transport hundreds of refugees over to the shores of Europe - and turn them into super beautifully designed bags and backpacks!

Exactly - WOW! My chat to Vera was probably one of the most touching & at the same time most empowering and motivating interviews I had. Getting such a truthful account of what’s happening out there, right now, from someone who’s actually been on the ground… It really really touched me. At the same time it’s SO encouraging to listen to Vera and feel her passion… how they made it work as a team…

On top of that, with their beautiful products they prove that sustainability doesn’t have to be a trade-off anymore. All in all, I feel super aligned with a lot of Vera’s values - especially her positive outlook on things.

Please, please, please, have a listen, it’s such a unique story and you’ll get such a better picture than the one painted by the mass media. In times of uncertainty and fear of the “other”, I couldn’t imagine anyone who would stay negative and anxious after listening to Vera’s messages. I’m sure it convinces every critic …

Anyway, before jumping in I wanted to share with you: we recorded the show when I was in transition on my way to Australia. Yep, I’m in the Aussie sister city of Berlin, in Melbourne, connecting with the local eco scene here and seeing if we can kick off GreenMe Melbourne. It’s pretty exciting, I’m meeting lots of interesting people and projects. And I can feel a crazy strong tie between Berlin and Melbourne.

I believe that it’s key to broaden our horizons and see what’s going on in the rest of the world - and learn about other social, sustainable, eco-minded projects. Everything is connected on this planet. And we all need to join forces in order to protect it. So, if you’re curious to see what’s moving in the green scene on the other end of the world, stay tuned and follow us on Facebook and Instagram and soon also on www.greenme.melbourne

And if you’re around in Melbourne, let us know and maybe you even wanna join one of our first tours over here!

IN THIS PODCAST EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT:

A truly unique take on how circular economy can look like Why it’s important to look back and celebrate A first-hand report of the situation on a refugee arrival point A business model that puts people on eye level The hardest moment to explain European politics to people who just survived How to find the battle you’re passionate to fight for
  • For our final episode in 2017, Claudi visited the wonderful Alexis Goertz, co-founder of Edible Alchemy (@ediblealchemy.co), co-founder of Mother Kombucha (@mother.kombucha.berlin) and quite a lot more.

She is Berlin’s queen of fermentation, a self-proclaimed probiotic warrior and without a doubt one of the most energetic, positive, bubbly and charismatic woman I know. If she’s not in Berlin she’s travelling through the lands with the Microbial Circus, she’s an avid adventurer, a culture dealer, bacteria barista and, and, and...

Before we really dive in, our very last tour in 2017 is running on Saturday, 16th December at 3pm - it’s our final "Conscious Gifts & Glühwein" session in creative Kreuzberg. Check out all the details, routes and prices and sign up here. Of course, you shall be rewarded for listening to the podcast! We’re giving you a special discount of 5 euros off the ticket price. To redeem it, just enter the discount code 'greenmexmas' when booking your spot on Eventbrite.

Back to today’s episode: Apart from having the nicest participants on the tours, it also warms my heart when I think about how amazing our partners are. They’re so welcoming and giving - and also super spontaneous. One these amazing partners - and meanwhile also good friends - is Alexis from Edible Alchemy. I had THE BEST time recording this interview with her. I could have chatted for hours and hours because what she does, and especially how she does it, is purely fascinating.

    QUICK FACTS ABOUT EDIBLE ALCHEMY

Through her platform Edible Alchemy, Alexis and her co-founder Natalie share tons of value-packed content about healthy lifestyles, food skills and creative experimentation through fermentation.

And fermentation has SO many superpowers. But we’re not just talking about our health, it can also play a huge role in preventing food waste and even has the potential to eliminate hunger and disease.

Unfortunately, like with so many truly incredible healing forces of mother nature, our Western culture has become largely out of touch with our microbial world. Instead, we tend towards processed, packaged, pasteurized and fast food.

Thank god Alexis is here to guide us back to the sustainable powers of fermentation, through colorful events, free webinars, lots of great content on the website - and, most importantly, super fun, interactive, hands-on fermentation workshops.

Really guys, her whole story absolutely captured me. It’s a tale of adventure, braveness, travels, immersing with different cultures, empowerment through teaching - and, of course, eating the most delicious foods.

IN THIS PODCAST EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT:

How many fermented foods we have around us everyday How fermentation links to the topic of food waste The secret forces behind our brain-gut-connection How fermentation can quadruple nutritional values in our food Why fermentation can be a cutting edge tool for chefs and restaurant owners The beauty of creating a passion business that’s kicked off by demand The strong ties between our human cultures and fermented foods The importance of getting out of your comfort zone & letting your instincts guide you A life changing year in Mozambique Why teaching doesn’t only empower the teacher Why times have never been better to start with fermentation What makes the Edible Alchemy events & workshops so unique

    And much, much more...

You see, there are lots of exciting takeaways waiting for you - so let's not waste time & start the show, shall we?

  • For this juicy episode, Claudi ventured out to meet Martin Elwert, co-founder of Coffee Circle (@coffee_circle), who are a certified B-Corp. We've been on a bit of a B-Corp tour in Berlin lately - in episode no.13 we chatted to the co-founder of soulbottles, which happens to be a B-Corp, too.

If you’re not sure what a B-Corp is, there’s a cool video explaining the whole concept in the shownotes for you…

    QUICK FACTS ABOUT COFFEE CIRCLE

Coffee Circle is all about high-quality coffee that’s delivered right to your doorstep. They personally source top single origin coffee directly, from the highlands of Ethiopia, and meanwhile also from lesser known coffee nations like Laos or Myanmar. They follow strict principles and pay the farmers prices far above the world market. And they invest 1 Euro per kg of coffee into social projects in the growing regions, with 100% of all donations going into the projects.

So far, Coffee Circle had a positive impact on more than 39.000 people in the growing regions, raising 490.000 euros for their projects. They’re really transparent about this, you can read about each single project on their website. And they deeply believe in entrepreneurship as the driving force for development, which is also a key focus of our interview.

The green coffee is then shipped to Germany and roasted fresh here in their new roastery in Wedding, which is where we are right now. I tell ya, it smells damn good. The wild Wedding is definitely one of Berlin’s most contrasting and therefore also most exciting neighbourhoods. Man, I love to come up here. It’s much rougher than other areas - but it’s home to a nicely down down-to-earth artist & alternative scene. Perfect for roamers and explorers seeking for an authentic, pre-gentrified vibe, a bit more off the beaten path than Kreuzberg & co.

Recently we did one of our Circular Economy Tour & Dinner experiences here and it’s been one of my favorites, really. Speaking of Circular Economy Tours, if you’re interested in exploring what a world with zero waste could look like and how creative Berlin projects are trying to make it happen, make sure to join us on our next tour: it’s happening on the 9th November and this time we’ll visit some of the circular economy heroes in Prenzlauer Berg. It all ends with a yummy zero waste dinner, which is hosted by our friends at OAK & ICE. Come join us, meet a bunch of like-minded people, exchange crazy ideas about a greener future and make some really amazing connections within the Berlin scene. You can find all the details in the shownotes, on our Facebook page, in the events calendar, and then easily book your spot through Eventbrite, or shoot us an email to [email protected]

Switching back to Coffee Circle: You know, not only is coffee sth that many many people in the world drink… It’s also one of the commodities that created the biggest imbalance between the wealthy nations and the developing world, AND at the same time coffee is without a doubt one of the most famous and widely spread Fair Trade products in the world. So it’s a great idea to build a social business around that and magnify its possibilities to alleviate poverty. Which is exactly what Coffee Circle is doing.

What is a social business? It’s a business that is dedicating its entire purpose to solve a social problem. It’s not about profit, money is just the means to drive the business and its mission forward. It’s also often defined as new way of conscious capitalism. What excites me about it, is that it really has the power to address the most pressing problems of humanity, without being dependent on donations or fundraising. Now there’s lots of different models and definitions out there. I highly recommend reading “Building Social Business” by Muhammad Yunus, who is kind of a luminary in this field. He’s founded the Grameen Bank, a bank run exclusively for and by the poor. It’s really inspiring and visionary and it’s giving me SO many ideas… even though you may not agree with 100% everything - if you wanna learn more about the idea of Social Business, then check it out.

As for Coffee Circle, the impact these guys had within the last 7 years has been remarkable. One of the key takeaways from our chat was, that if you are running a sustainably-oriented business that serves a social purpose, you have to be not only as good as conventional businesses - you have to be better.

WHAT ELSE YOU LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:

Some major traits that all social entrepreneurs should have How to have the greatest impact per euro invested The crucial difference to „normal development work“ The notion of dignity in social business The challenge of building trust and credibility - and how to solve it Why coffee circle decided deliberately against Fair Trade Where to find the biggest potential for future social entrepreneurs What exactly is the idea behind 3rd wave coffee (and what’s 1st and 2nd wave) Which role Berlin played in kicking Coffee Circle off the ground - How the startup scene in Berlin is shifting The myth behind the ever-coming Wedding & how it feels to be the first mover Why it’s so important to get expectations right The biggest crisis Coffee Circle had to face last year & what happened behind the scenes The importance of being humble & appreciative of the people around you

  • This time I unpacked the brain of Paul Kupfer, co-founder and CEO of soulbottles (@soulbottles) - an amazing Berlin-based social startup. What they do? soulbottles produces the world’s cleanest drinking bottles and is on a mission to give people all over the world access to clean drinking water and sanitation. How they do it? Well, by offering soul-lutions through making sustainability cool, fun and sexy. They basically create colorful designs that rock and put them on beautiful glass bottles. On top, soulbottles are 100% made in Germany and 100% free of plastic.

I’m very very passionate about clean drinking water, because it is a global issue absolutely solvable! There’s no technology barriers whatsoever, it’s linked to giving access to resources - and everyone of us can really help to make it happen... soulbottles is not only encouraging people to drink tap water & eliminating plastic waste. They also give 1 euro for each bottle sold to Viva Con Agua - a really cool charity that is improving access to clean water in developing countries. So it’s really a win-win-win. You win, because you have a cool, beautifully designed and durable drinking bottle that everyone around you will be curious about. soulbottles wins, because they can sustain their business and raise awareness for a cause they believe in. And rural communities - in this case in Nepal - win because they get access to clean drinking water.

To give you some numbers: Soulbottles has supplied 8.000 households with 40.000 with access to clean drinking water, donating 37.000 euros of their profits. It’s a story about social entrepreneurship. Of shaping the for-purpose economy. Paul and his co-founder Georg built a social business completely from scratch at the age of 24! I tell you, their journey is full-on fascinating.

Some of the highlights you’ll learn more about:

Why you don’t need to be a born business crack to build a social business from scratch How a bottle of vodka can become the basis for a brilliant social enterprise How moments of crisis (in this case the London riots) can change your life for the better Why a “just see if it works” mentality is crucial to get you started - The meaning of “company” in our current system Why raising money for clean water is much easier than for clean toilets Who inspired Paul the most on his journey & the biggest challenge soulbottles had to overcome in the last 5 years The current global state of clean drinking water & what plastic bottle producers have in common with the tobacco industry A moment Paul is most proud of - even though he hasn’t been there himself What Paul does that drives everyone in his team crazy Where you should go to connect with the Berlin social startup scene The realization that the biggest structures around us are human made

That is not all: we talked about a Kung-fu master in sales, Paul’s favorite secret spot in Berlin, the weird relationship Germans have with tap water, all the other amazing world changing projects that soul bottles is involved in and and and!

Oh yes, why are soulbottles made of glass? One reason: it tastes SO much better. Plus, glass is a great material that can be 100% recycled! Soulbottles are made from around 30-50% of recycled glass. You can read up everything about the production and materials used on their website, I drop it into the show notes - as for our interview, I rather wanted to extract those stories from Paul, that you can’t read up on the interwebs.Another great fact about soulbottles: it is a certified B-Corp! Actually, they’ve been of the first 100 companies in Germany to join the movement.

    BEFORE YOU GO

  • Finally, I'm releasing the mysteriously missing show no. 4 - an episode from the early days that has never appeared in iTunes before...! I'll explain you more about the story behind that in the intro. Tune in as Claudi spoke to a super bad-ass guest: Benedict from Standert Bicycles in Berlin Mitte. Benedict is a very essential part of the Standert team, a total road bike & fixed gear devotee - and a real Berliner! How about that?! Since they started out in 2012, Standert Bicycles have created an awesome Berlin brand around bicycles they want to ride themselves. Their combo of

Since they started out in 2012, Standert Bicycles have created an awesome Berlin brand around bicycles they want to ride themselves. Their combo of store, showroom, workshop and café works super well and has kind of become an open & chillaxed meeting place for the Berlin bicycle tribe. Bicycles are such an essential part of our lives. Of Berlin life! We could not imagine to live in this city without our bikes. For us, it stands for freedom, independence… and Claudi actually often has her best ideas while riding a bike! Plus, it fits perfectly into the eco- & health conscious mindset of many Berliners...

In this episode, you'll learn more about:

What is the story behind Standert Bicycles & why it is written with "-ert" How a bike store turned into a hub for the Berlin cycling scene - What they do to grow a community & get people excited to ride together Why it is important to build and sell only the things you love What we need to do to help building a friendly & peaceful coexistence of cars and cyclists in Berlin

It’s always a good time for a bike, so make sure to pop by at Standert's store, even if it’s just for a quick coffee and a round of “awwwe” looking at their bikes. They’re super easy going and always up for a chat. Hop on your bikes (or the metro if you have to) and come over!

Check out the full interview including transcript on: www.greenmeberlin.com/podcast-standert-bicycles

As always, you can find all the details in the transcript, and of course, you can find them on the GreenMe BLN map: www.greenmeberlin.com/map

If you’re not in yet, sign up for the GreenMe Berlin newsletter and you’ll not only get notified when the next inspiring interview is ready. You’ll also get to download a Best of Guide to some of my favorite places (hint: Standert is in there, too): www.greenmeberlin.com/newsletter

Don't forget: it would be a huge help for me if you could hop over to iTunes and leave me a short review. Tell me how you like the show, it’s what I need to keep me going.

Thanks SO much for listening, hope you have a beautiful day - and remember to keep it green !

  • My guest today is Lisa Jaspers, a passionate social entrepreneur that inspires me so much! She ditched her secure job at one of the worlds biggest charity organizations to follow her heart and start her own ethical brand, FOLKDAYS.

FOLKDAYS is a Berlin-based fashion label that empowers artisans from some of the remotest corners in the world to make a living through their handmade crafts. Each time I walk into the store here in Kreuzberg, it’s like going on a little journey to far away lands and cultures. It’s spreading a very positive, colorful, dreamy vibe and takes me to places like Turkey, Cambodia, Nepal, India, Ethiopia, Kenya, Egypt, Palestine, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru - in total there are 26 artisans from 18 countries involved.

Every team member of FOLKDAYS is happy to share the unique stories behind each piece. Lisa even knows all artisans in person, as she travels out to those hidden corners, searching for the most talented craftspeople - and gives them a reason to believe into themselves and their incredible talent.

Apart from sharing the story of how this beautiful label was born and the “what, “how” & of course, especially the “why” behind FOLKDAYS, we also touched into some very personal topics.

    You'll learn about:

How to get noticed as a social brand in an overloaded market like fashion What it means to be a female entrepreneur - and why we need more of them Why we need to learn to believe in ourselves & our skills (no matter if in Bangladesh or Europe) Stories of travelling on the surface vs. travelling deep What moved Lisa to the point where she wanted to stop travelling Why you’ll never be a good entrepreneur if you’re a perfectionist What’s so important about surrounding yourself with the right people Why we are often our own worst enemy & How to keep up your energy as a small business owner The importance of visual communication and storytelling for green brands What are the next steps in the FOLKDAYS story The advantages - and the challenges - of starting a sustainable brand in Berlin What makes Berlin “Berlin” & the effects of living in peaceful chaos

You see, there’s a whole lot to get out of this! I had a blast talking to this inspiring woman and left the store full of motivation and new ideas - and I’m pretty sure you’ll feel the same.

Make sure to swing by at the store in Manteuffelstraße in Kreuzberg as soon as you can. And until then, soothe your curiosity and wanderlust by checking out the beautiful journal on www.folkdays.com

Check out the full interview including pictures and show notes on: www.greenmeberlin.com/podcast-folkdays

If you enjoyed this episode, share it out with your friends - and I ALWAYS love to hear from you too. So send me any thoughts, questions or feedback. Either as a comment on www.greenmeberlin.com/podcast-folkdays, or message me on Facebook, Twitter, send me an Email, whichever you feel most comfortable with.

It’s happening on the 17th August here in Berlin. If you’re interested in joining, watch out on www.greenmeberlin.com/events, as we’ll put all the details live over the weekend.

Now, go out & have an amazing day. And remember to keep it green!

  • Lars Zimmermann (@bricktick) is the founder of the OSCEdays (Open Source Circular Economy) in Berlin. What are the OSCEdays? Well, I think these guys are really creating our future here. From 29th June to 2nd July, they’ll explore how a city without waste would look like. That includes one of my favorite topics: food. Plus, it’s about zero-waste consumption, upcycling fashion, circular design, architecture and so on…

The program is full of panels, talks & hands-on workshops on issues like package-free shopping, growing your own mushrooms on waste, compost worms, dying clothes with leftover food, making your own soaps from old frying fat - I know sounds weird - and SO much more. Some of my favorite projects in the city are part of it, too, like Original Unverpackt, the Guerilla Architects with their MehrWert zero waste restaurant, the Tempelhof Community Garden Allemende-Kontor, the guys from Restlos Glücklich, the passionate team of Isla Coffee and and and…

Good news: I got 5 FREE 4-day tickets for you. More info & the link below :)

The Circular Economy topic grabbed my attention while ago, in a sense of: we’re in a throw-away society and there’s so much stuff already produced out there in the world that we don’t even need or use… What are creative ways to re-use, reduce, recycle?

But the Open Source part? To be honest: Before I talked to Lars, the whole idea sounded interesting, but was still kind of abstract in my mind. But Lars really managed to change that. I am super grateful and excited how this interview turned out & hope that it will do the same to you and spur your curiosity for the future.

Lars is an artist AND an economist from Berlin - such an unusual combination, isn’t it? He develops projects like the Open Source Circular Economy Days but also many more. He consults companies and NGOs. He does public speaking. And he also blogs and publishes articles in books and journals. All about Lars

The way he looks at the world and understands the way things work are SUPER fascinating. Listening back in I have tons of more questions - but luckily, Lars and his team are putting on the OSCEdays, that will surely give me an answer to many of them! It’d be great to see you there.

    ------

My friends, I got something for you: the OSCE team gave me 5 FREE TICKETS for the event for YOU guys! It’s a first come first serve → get your free ticket HERE.

If you wanna do me a little favor in return, then hop over to iTunes and leave me a short review, just tell me how you like the show - that’d make me SUPER happy. But it’s no must to get the free tickets, as I said, I’m putting the link out there and who ever is quickest wins :)

    ------

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE:

*What is behind the idea of open source circular economy

*What is happening at the OSCEdays Berlin

*How an artist & economist sees the world - and how he wants to change it

*Why the internet is a huge driver for a waste free world

*Why growth isn’t always the best way: shifting from quality to quantity

*What makes the OSCEdays different this year

*How abstract concepts can be brought to our everyday lives

“It’s a tough nut to crack, but just throw your brains on it. And if there’s enough brains on it, then maybe the nut will crack” - Lars Zimmermann

  • This is a very special day - why? Because we are at episode NO 10 of the GreenMe Berlin podcast, yeah!!

Now what’s happening on todays’ show? Well, what would be more fitting to celebrate this special episode than getting the organizer of a very, very unique event in Berlin in front of the mic?

It’s Stefanie from the Green Market Berlin!

The Green Market is Berlin’s first and no. 1 green lifestyle market. It’s running 4 times a year, one for each season. And for the summer edition, it’s moving to a brand new location (which we gonna tell you more about in a bit). There’s usually around 3000 people per day (which could rise quite a lot this year). You can check out around 60 vendors: a whole world full of original vegan street food, fashion, cosmetics, crafts, creative gifts, music, live presentations, workshops, cooking shows, film screenings and so much more. Promise, there’s no activism, no preaching - just heaps of flavor explosions, beautiful products and positive people.

And I’m so excited to have the hero behind it all on the show today. Stefanie Witt, a super energetic Berliner. With a big portion of passion, she built up an incredible platform for the Berlin green scene. She’s bringing together consumers with small scale producers, so we can all learn and grow.

We talked about heaps of things:

    * What’s new for the summer market & why Steffi is taking a big risk with that

    * Why you need to choose your words wisely to get people excited for vegan products

    * Some books and films you should definitely watch

    * Why she says no to big brands and helps small businesses instead

    * How to stay cool in a crisis moment & why you sometimes just need to take the risk

    * Why Berlin is a vegan paradise

    * Why there’s always a way, even if others tell you it won’t work

    * A special announcement on what’s next (apart from the Green Market)

You can check out the full transcript, pictures and all links mentioned on www.greenmeberlin.com/podcast-010-the-green-market-berlin

Make sure to swing by at The Green Market Berlin and let me know if you do so, I’ll definitely be around on Sunday.

If you don’t wanna miss out on events like that, make sure to check the GreenMe Berlin events calendar on www.greenmeberlin.com/events

AND if you happen to be in Berlin on the 22nd June - I am running my next GreenMe BLN tour! This time, we’re off to explore the buzzing Friedrichshain neighborhood. I’ll take you to some of the most passionate and dedicated green businesses I know in the area. So colorful eco-fair fashion stores, organic markets & sustainable food concepts, transformed spaces and utopian wonderlands - we’ll meet the owners & founders and get a really cool insight into their work. It starts at 3.30pm and you can sign up for it by sending me an email or through Eventbrite. • A warm welcome to session no. 9 of the GreenMe Berlin podcast. And warm is desperately needed right now - it’s been snowing here in Berlin this week. In the middle of April! That my friends, drives me even more to do the best that I possibly can to stop climate change and help keeping this planet healthy.

But, when I think about this dedicated social entrepreneur duo that I’m introducing you to today, my heart is instantly getting much warmer. I cannot wait to share the story of Conflictfood with you.

Through one single ingredient, that is grown in a global crisis region, they are opening our eyes for a different story about countries like Afghanistan or Palestine. One that the media don’t tell. And at the same time, help small local farmers to earn a living in a sustainable way.

The interview with Conflictfood really touched me, as it deeply links to what I believe in. They show us another side of the world, tell us positive stories of joy and lust for life!

If you want to support Conflictfood, the easiest thing to do so is a) to buy their product and b) even easier, to share this episode out with your friends and anyone you think should know about this, too.

You'll find the full transcript of this interview and the show notes at www.greenmeberlin.com/podcast-conflictfood. So check it out & get in touch with Salem & Gernot.

One more news from my side: if you’re in Berlin on the 29th April, I’m doing a green tour through my home kiez, South Neukölln, where I wanna show you the amazing eco-minded projects that this area is really filled with. We’ll say hi and chat to the founders of some creative sustainable food concepts, ethical fashion stores and transformed spaces. And get an insight into their work and why they do it. So if you’re in town, I’d be really happy if you join. It’ll take around 3-3.5hours and costs 25 euros. Spots are very limited, cause I think it’s much better in a small group. And you can find all the info and tickets here on my Facebook page.

That's it! Thanks so much for listening! Have an amazing day & remember to keep it green :)

  • Today’s episode is one of those stories, when you hear about them you gonna have your mouth wide open and think “how is this possible”?

You know that I love projects that really challenge the status quo, so I made my way to Friedrichshain, walked into the backyard behind Berlin’s famous electro club Watergate, right by the river Spree - to visit Jan Edler, one of the founders of Flussbad Berlin.

If you haven't heard of the project, Flussbad is about to create a natural swimming pool in the river Spree, just along the UNESCO site of Museum Island, so in a very static, historic area of the city… you can imagine that some people get excited about - and some throw their hands up in despair.

It’s been incredible to meet Jan. He is such a fascinating character & he was so open about everything. He made me see the project in a completely different light: It’s not just gonna be the world’s biggest swimming pool... The swimming is the side effect, but what it’s really about is re-accessing a lost part of our city.

We talked about all that and so much more, like

The function of the river Spree now & how it should be How to deal with nay sayers & keep pushing Why ideas from the past can be revived to build a better future Why perseverance is one of the most important traits you can have How 4 million euros turned a hobby into something damn serious Why the Flussbad Berlin team needs your help & how you can get involved…

Hope you're as inspired as I am after this episode, that changing the world is possible and that we shouldn’t downregulate our possibilities because we are afraid of something… baaam!

You'll find everything you need to know in the shownotes at www.greenmeberlin.com/podcast - this is where I post all my episodes, including the full transcript if you wanna read. So check it out - and share the Flussbad episode with your friends, cause you heard it, they can only do it if there’s as many people as possible.

As always, it would be a huge help for me if you could hop over to the GreenMe Berlin Podcast on iTunes and leave me a short review. Tell me how you like the show, what you wanna hear, if it helps you or not... it’s what I need to keep me going. Thank YOU!

  • This time, Claudi got Leo from MealSaver in front of the mic for you. What an exciting project!

MealSaver is a Berlin-based startup that is passionate about stopping food waste in the gastronomy world. How they do that? With an app that helps food businesses to sell their leftovers & helps us to get a tasty meal for very little money - win, win!

From the small bakery around the corner to big hotel chains… the amounts of food that are going to waste every single day are mind boggling.

MealSaver only launched in October last year, but what they’ve built up since then is simply amazing. And Leo was such a great person to talk to - he spent time researching about food waste at the uni in Berkeley, California & also got the chance to get a taster of the startup community in Silicon Valley.

We chatted about SO many facts, for example:

Why a young passionate startup can change something today, while politicians take years The biggest issues around food waste in our society How generation y is developing a new price tolerance towards sustainable consumption What the factor 1.3 tells us about overproduction of food How the food businesses reacted to the idea of MealSaver How MealSaver uses the help of its community to develop the app further Why you don’t need to have a perfect product to get started And how the Berlin startup scene does compared to silicon valley

Make sure to listen up to the end, as Leo made such an AMAZING call out to the world, to you and to everyone who wants to help us changing sth for the better…

And as always, it would be a huge help for me if you could hop over to iTunes and leave me a short review. Tell me how you like the show, it’s what I need to keep me going. Thank YOU!

Now, download the MealSaver app & have a go: http://www.mealsaver.de

The next round is starting on March 14!

  • For the first episode of the year, Claudi checked out a place that you have to put on your list if you’re looking for alternatives to green up your wardrobe: The Upcycling Fashion Store in Berlin Mitte.

Chatting to Carina Bischof, one of the 4 owners and founders of the store, Claudi got such deep insights into how our clothes are being made and what upcycling fashion actually means! It stands for more than eco-friendly production: instead of taking new materials, the most forward-thinking designers are now using “waste” - like leftovers from the big textile factories - and turn it into the most stylish, time less pieces ever.

There’s so much creativity flowing. It’s about changing perspectives. Using what’s already out there.

You learn what it takes to build up a sustainable fashion brand & store in Berlin, why an online store doesn’t replace real customer interaction, how the store built up a movement and became the home base for an entire scene, the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people, why Berlin is the best place in the world to create - and where it stands compared to London.

Really, Carina is such a positive, energetic person. Claudi had a great time talking and listening to her and hope the passion sparkles on to you, too :)

Check out the full interview including transcript on: www.greenmeberlin.com/podcast-upcycling-fashion-store

Listen and subscribe to the GreenMe Berlin podcast on iTunes and leave me a short review - that would mean a lot to me.

As a little reward and motivation, you’ll get a Best-of-Guide to some of my favorite green places in Berlin for free at the end of the challenge. Make sure to share this with your friends & help us spread the word about all those exiting eco-minded places in Berlin!

  • For this episode, Claudi visited Julian Lechner who is the founder and inventor of Kaffeeform - a Berlin backyard startup that is producing reusable coffee cups
from recycled coffee grounds. The idea and the story behind it is so brilliant and unique that Kaffeeform is getting a lot of attention and requests from all over the world, from Oslo
    to Korea.

Julian started his business Berlin style: Without money, from a garage, pretty DIY - but with a big portion of passion and belief in his idea. He gave me a tour of the Kaffeeform headquarters
in a Kreuzberg backyard and showed me how the production works. If you love coffee, this is adds a whole new level. And if not, I'm very sure you’ll still be inspired and get lots of
    good take-aways out of it.

We talk about how living in Italy changed his life and what it takes to convince doubters of a brilliant idea. Walking back all the way to the first trial and error sessions, we chat about what
happened before finding the perfect organic recipe for turning the coffee grounds into solid cups. We also talk about which impact Kaffeeform has on both the local coffee shops and the
consumers, like you and me. We dive into the beauty of bringing old objects to life again by changing its features, using our creativity and imagination and adding a completely new use to it.

That’s what it means to go zero-waste, that’s the kind of future that lies ahead of us.
