He then published 8 action-adventure novels in a series called âThe Smugglerâ. And then in 1977 he released a memoir entitled, âWalt, Mickey and Me: Confessions of the First Ex-Mouseketeerâ, which is a fascinating and eye-opening account of his tumultuous 3 weeks, at the age of 9 years old, when he was a member of the Mickey Mouse Club TV show hosted by Walt Disney.
And then, in 1991, following the suicides of former child actors Tim Hovey, Trent Lehman and Rusty Hamer, our guest created a non-profit organization called âA Minor Considerationâ, which provides support and assistance to former child stars, and advocates for legislative protection for child celebrities in terms of working conditions and financial security. A Minor Consideration has had a tremendously positive and profound impact in the entertainment industry, and it has given our guest the well-deserved title of âthe patron saint of child actorsâ. And in fact, in 1997 our guest received the Former Child Star Lifetime Achievement Award at the Young Artist Awards.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Joel Brokaw, Son of Legendary Hollywood Agent, Norman Brokaw
About Harvey's guest:
Todayâs guest, Joel Brokaw, can truly be said to be descended from Hollywood royalty â perhaps not in the traditional sense, because neither of his parents were movie stars. But his father was one of the most successful, powerful and respected agents in the history of Hollywood, Norman Brokaw.
Throughout his career he represented some of the greatest legendary stars in history, including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Barbara Stanwyck, Loretta Young, Susan Hayward, Natalie Wood, Kim Novak, Clint Eastwood, Dick Van Dyke, Donna Summer and many more, including Olympic athletes like Mark Spitz, and former President Gerald Ford and his wife Betty Ford.
He was renowned for his professionalism, integrity, sincerity, enthusiasm and above all, his steadfast loyalty and devotion to his clients. But until now, no one really knew the man behind the sterling professional reputation, because he always shied away from center stage, preferring instead to shine the spotlight on his superstar clients.
But now our guest, who is Norman Brokawâs son, has written a highly compelling and insightful book about his father entitled, âDriving Marilyn: The Life and Times of Legendary Hollywood Agent Norman Brokaw.â The book tells the story of Norman Brokawâs remarkable 60-year journey, beginning in 1943, when at the age of 16, he started working in the mail room at the illustrious William Morris Agency, and then worked his way up to President and then Chairman and CEO of the company.
Our guest spent 30 years as a publicist in Hollywood, representing many big stars, including Tyler Perry, for whom he ended up ghost writing the #1 New York Times Bestseller, âDonât Make a Black Woman Take Off Her Earrings: Madeaâs Uninhibited Commentaries on Love and Lifeâ. That book, released in 2006, launched our guest into a new and highly successful career as an author, collaborator and ghost writer.
His other books include âLiving with Purpose: An Activistâs Guide to Listening, Learning and Leadingâ, by Dorothy Height, âIt's Never Too Late: Getting Older, Wiser, and Worry Free in Our Golden Yearsâ, by Scott Page, âThere's No Traffic on the Extra Mile: Lessons on the Road from Dreams to Destinyâ by Ricky Minor, and he co-wrote Florence Hendersonâs bestselling memoir, âLife is Not a Stage: From Broadway Baby to a Lovely Lady and Beyondâ. He also co-wrote âJane's Dust: A Tale of Talc, Deceit, and Deathâ along with Dr. Ronald E. Gordon. And he co-wrote âConnect - The Ultimate Human Superpower - 38 Remarkable Journeys into the Inner Realm of Mind Powerâ, together with Sam Beard. And in 2022, he published a delicious memoir entitled, âPerfect Momentsâ.

Tragically, he passed away of a heart attack in 1952 at the age of 39, largely brought on by the stress of the persecution he faced as a blacklisted actor.
Our guest is Mr. Garfieldâs only living child, Julie Garfield. Sheâs had a most impressive career as an award winning actress in the theatre, both on and off Broadway, and in film and television. And for the past 20 years, she has been focussing exclusively on her career as a prominent artist.
