Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Andrea Simon, Author, âBashert: A Granddaughterâs Holocaust Questâ
About Harvey's guest:
Todayâs guest, Andrea Simon, is a multi-award winning writer from York City, whose captivating and historically important book entitled âBashert: A Granddaughterâs Holocaust Questâ moved me so much that I just had to invite her on our show. In this engrossing book, she tells of her search for her roots, which began in VoĆÄyn, a town in Belarus, where her beloved grandmother came from, before creating a new life in America.
Through interviews, personal testimonies, historical accounts, archival documents and family anecdotes, the book reveals the unprecedented barbarism of the Nazis, and the brutal reality of the massacres of the Jews who were living in Soviet territory occupied by the Germans after June of 1941, and before the Nazis came up with the âfinal solutionâ in 1942.
Although most people think of concentration camps and gas chambers when they think of the Holocaust, the fact is that between 40 and 50 percent of the Jews killed during the Holocaust, were killed by methods other than by being gassed. Weâre talking about savagely horrific mass murders, exterminating the Jewish populations of dozens of cities, towns and villages, by being shot in the head and then piled in mass graves in the forest. In particular, our guest uncovered the facts surrounding the massacre on September 22, 1942, of 500 Jews from the town of VoĆÄyn, where her family came from, AND the even more shocking and barbaric massacre of 50,000 Jews including 9,000 children, in Bronna Gora, located in a forest between Brest and Minsk.
The book also deals with the refusal of the Soviets, after the war, to recognize and commemorate the Jewish genocide that took place on their territory. In 2021 the book was ranked at number one on the Book Authorityâs list of the âBest Holocaust Biography Books of All Time,â and in 2023, the book received Honorable Mention for the Eric Hoffer Award in the category of Legacy Nonfiction.
Our guest has also written several other books, including âEsfir Is Aliveâ and âFloating in the Neversinkâ, both of which received numerous prestigious awards. Our guest has published numerous stories and essays, and sheâs received many prestigious literary honors, including the Ernest Hemingway First Novel Contest, two Dortort Creative Writing Awards, the Stark Short Fiction Prize, the Short Story Society Award, and the Authors in the Park Short Story Writing Contest.
Our guest holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from the City College of New York where she has taught creative writing courses. Sheâs also taught courses on âHow to Write About Your Family â and Still Talk to Them Afterwardsâ, and sheâs even taught a course on how to write about your mother without guilt. That course led to an anthology published last year called âHereâs the Story ⊠Nine Women Write Their Livesâ.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Highly Acclaimed Actress, Singer & Dancer, Sandy Duncan
About Harvey's guest:
Todayâs guest, Sandy Duncan, is a highly acclaimed and beloved actress, singer and dancer who has been dazzling audiences for 6 decades in every medium of the entertainment world.
On the big screen, she starred in âStar Spangled Girlâ, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. And that same year, she received another Golden Globe nomination for most promising female newcomer for her delightful performance in the Disney movie, âThe Million Dollar Duckâ. She also appeared in a number of other great movies like âThe Cat From Outer Spaceâ and âNever Againâ, and she was unforgettable as âPinocchioâ in the wonderful 1976 TV movie, âPinoccioâ co-starring Danny Kaye and Flip Wilson. She starred in several TV sitcoms, starting with âFunny Faceâ, for which she received an Emmy Award nomination for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series. She then starred in âThe Sandy Duncan Showâ. And then, in 1987, she astonished the whole world by achieving something that many people thought was impossible: she took over the lead in Valerie Harperâs TV sitcom, âValerieâ, after Ms. Harper left the show, which was ultimately renamed âThe Hogan Familyâ, and she actually made the show better, and kept it going successfully for a further four seasons, which is a truly remarkable accomplishment that no one else in this business could ever have done unless they had the immense popularity and likeability of our guest.
She guest starred in many classic TV shows like âBonanzaâ, âThe Six Million Dollar Manâ, âThe Bionic Womanâ, âLaw & Order: SVUâ, and she starred in one of my all-time favourite TV movies, âMy Boyfriendâs Backâ with Jill Eikenberry and Judith Light. Her other Broadway performances include âMy One and Onlyâ, âChicagoâ and âFinding Neverlandâ. Sheâs starred in numerous national tours of âPeter Panâ, âMy One and Onlyâ and âThe King and Iâ.
And off-Broadway, she won a Theatre World Award for her performance in âThe Ceremony of Innocenceâ. Sheâs also starred in many theatrical productions including âNo, No Nanetteâ, âDriving Miss Daisyâ, âThe Glass Menagerieâ and many more.
And if all of that werenât enough, our guest is a recipient of the prestigious National Rehabilitation Hospital Victory Award, which is given to individuals who exhibit exceptional courage and strength in the face of adversity. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Burt Kearns, Author, âSHEMP! The Biography of the Three Stoogesâ Shemp Howardâ
About Harvey's guest:
Todayâs guest, Burt Kearns, is an award-winning producer, director, writer, journalist and author who is renowned for his work in nonfiction television and film, in TV shows like âBreaking the Iceâ, âLegsville Oral Historyâ, âGuinness World Records Unleashedâ, âJoe Rogan Questions Everythingâ, âThe Secret History of Rock 'n' Rollâ with Gene Simmons, âAll The Presidentsâ Moviesâ, and many more. He produced the excellent 2001 documentary, âDeath of A Beatleâ, about the death of John Lennon, and he co-wrote and produced the 2006 movie, âCloud 9â, starring Burt Reynolds. Heâs an Emmy Award winning newswriter, and he served as managing editor and producer of the highly popular TV shows, âA Current Affairâ and âHard Copyâ.
But beyond all of that, our guest is also a highly acclaimed author. He wrote, âTabloid Babyâ, which traces the evolution of the tabloid television genre. He then co-wrote âThe Show Won't Go On: The Most Shocking, Bizarre, and Historic Deaths of Performers Onstageâ, followed by âLawrence Tierney: Hollywood's Real-Life Tough Guyâ.
Last year, he appeared on our show to discuss his brilliant bestselling book entitled, âMarlon Brando: Hollywood Rebelâ.
And now, heâs back to talk about his brand new book entitled, âShemp: The Biography of the Three Stoogesâ Shemp Howard: The Face of Film Comedy.â The Three Stooges are widely considered to be the greatest, most successful and most influential slapstick comedy group in modern history, and if youâre a fan of The Three Stooges â and who isnât? â this extremely well-researched book is an absolute must-read, because the author enlightens us on the incredibly impressive â but until now, largely unexplored - life and body of work of the most misunderstood and the most underrated member of The Three Stooges, Shemp Howard, who was actually a highly accomplished, influential and respected comic actor in his own right.
Along with his brother Moe and vaudeville comedian Larry Fine, Shemp was an original member of the Three Stooges, but in 1932 he quit the group to pursue a solo acting career. He appeared in over a hundred movies alongside the biggest Hollywood stars, including W.C. Fields, John Wayne, James Stewart, Marlene Dietrich, William Powell, Lon Chaney Jr., Myrna Loy, and the team of Abbott & Costello. But in 1946, when Curly became too ill to continue working, Shemp gave up a successful film career to help his brothers out by returning to The Three Stooges.
And whatâs really fascinating and compelling about this book, is that, because of his meticulous research, our guest challenges and debunks the âofficialâ version of Three Stooges history, largely promoted by Moe, thatâs been repeated for decades. The book shatters many myths and uncovers the surprising and often troubling facts behind the scenes surrounding Shempâs departure from and return to The Three Stooges, and the circumstances surrounding his untimely death. But more than anything, the book confirms Shemp Howardâs well-deserved place in cinematic history.
