In our second, long-awaited DARK NOTES episode, we put historian Stephen Fox's WOLF OF THE DEEP through the HotH2OHistory wringer. Part biography of the intrepid Raphael Semmes, part account of his exploits as the captain of the feared C.S.S. Alabama, Fox recounts the adventures of the raider, his crew, and the ship that made Union vessels shudder during the Civil War. Where it gets spicy is when Fox, as a Yankee historian, cannot shake the inevitable condemnation of the South and even Semmes for their efforts in the war. After all, the worst, absolute worst thing an Ivy League historian can espouse is sympathy for the South and thus, racism. Because we all know with what unassailable virtue the North started and carried out the war...

A whole lot stinks in the State of Ukraine, from off-the-grid biolabs to rank corruption, and to sustain the crimes, innumerable lives have been sacrificed on the altar of neo-con, geo-realpolitik. With the Donald channeling William McKinley--another president who never saw a tariff he didn't like--the time has come to revisit sound economics and the free market take on import taxes. Spoiler alert: just like all other forms of state plunder, tariffs wind up benefitting the few at the expense of the many. Unless one wishes to find himself in a whole array of reductio ad absurdum positions, tariffs are just as bad as sanctions, regulations, rent controls, and minimum wage statutes. One must study the seen and the unseen, à la Henry Hazlitt.

With H1-B visas in the news in the United States, newly elected U.S. Representative Jayant Bhandari chimed in regarding Indian culture and society several months ago. His take-away from having been born and raised there: India has rejected Christian and Western mores and reverted to an amoral, apathetic culture. Stark contrasts exist between Trump, who is about to take the American Imperial Throne for the second time and his only, real predecessor--the Chief Executive of what once was the American Republic, Grover Cleveland. Both really, really liked gold. Let's just see how much Trump still does...

A very odd statue of basketball star Dwayne Wade was unveiled in Miami just as the Vatican promoted a Japanese, anime inspired mascot, Luce. Both representations have received the proper, popular derision they deserve because neither symbol resembles the actual beings for which they stand.
Ben Bollinger joins the show to elucidate the areas in which the Church faces imaging and outreach problems, all of which is disturbing since the Church has been granted the Light of Divine Truths in Revelation and Tradition, not to mention Augustine, Aquinas, Michelangelo and Mozart.
