  • E28 | Proving Your Worth: How Small Choices Shape How You See Yourself with Ryan Bush

Ryan Bush, author of Designing the Mind: The Principles of Psychitecture and Become Who You Are: A New Theory of Self-Esteem, Human Greatness, and the Opposite of Depression shares why depression and anxiety are easier to overcome than you think - just by being a person you respect and doing things you consider admirable. Plus, Ryan candidly discusses being diagnosed with Autism—a neurobiological condition often labeled as a disorder or disability, but he believes is a rare and special gift.

Designing the Mind with Ryan Bush

    Questions for Discussion

Can you share ways in which you've attempted to "design" your own mind, similar to Ryan's concept of "psychitecture"? What mental habits or psychological algorithms have you found to be effective? How do you interpret the idea that a "good life" is not primarily about external successes, but about exercising personal strengths and witnessing these strengths? Can you share an instance in your life where struggling through a challenge taught you a significant lesson?Have experiences of hardship and struggle in your own life led to personal growth and happiness in the long-term, echoing Ryan's perspective on the value of these experiences?Ryan emphasizes the importance of cultivating virtues to regulate mood and overall happiness. What are some virtues you prioritize in your life, and how do they impact your well-being?The concept of self-witnessing was discussed in relation to personal decision-making. How have the promises you’ve made or broken to yourself affected your self-perception and mood? How do you balance the concepts of "being" versus "doing" in your life? Can you give an example of when you chose to focus on "being" and how it fulfilled you differently than "doing"?Considering the challenges faced by kids diagnosed with ADD/ADHD in today's social and educational environments, as Ryan mentioned, what interventions or changes do you think could support their well-being?In what ways do you resonate with Ryan's three-dimensional framework for evaluating life choices? Can you share a personal decision that required you to navigate this complex "topographical chessboard"?Given the idea that our happiness mechanism is wired for social status and genetic outcomes, rather than personal well-being, how do you think we can "hack" our brain's regulation system to better optimize for our own happiness and virtue?

  • E25 | Finding Freedom in LESS: Is Minimalism the Path to Your Well-being? with Brian Gardner

Brian Gardner is an advocate for living a minimalistic lifestyle, not just by reducing what he owns or buys, but by being intentional about what he devotes time and energy to. He is also a Chicago-based entrepreneur, designer, and WordPress expert.

I reached out to Brian to join us as a guest after reading an article he wrote for Becoming Minimalist called "We Are Defined By The Things We Don't Do."

In this episode, Brian shares the incredible benefits of living a minimalistic lifestyle, like being free to focus on what truly matters and enjoying the reduced stress of managing less. Several years ago, his business wasn't generating the income he needed to support the life he had created for his family, so he made a drastic decision, one that shaped a philosophy that would liberate him from the rat race forever.

You can do something similar for yourself! By minimizing what you don't need and prioritizing what you do, you can create time and space for things that bring you joy - and happily let the rest go.

  • E20 | Embracing Uncertainty: Finding Opportunities in Challenges

In this episode, we talk about the fear of uncertainty and how it makes us do boring things, like staying firmly planted in our comfort zone even though we're miserable. But if we can learn to roll with it, uncertainty almost always brings powerful opportunities for growth and expansion. Of course, it's uncomfortable to take a risk and trust the process, but that discomfort is often an indicator that you're in the right place at the right time, having the experience you need. If you don't understand why things are unfolding as they are, maybe it's time to trust that they are serving you and surrender.

  • E18 | Mastering Intuition: Unlocking The Power Of Silent Knowledge

What is intuition? It's that inner voice that nudges you in a certain direction, sometimes gently, sometimes persistently. Referencing Malcolm Gladwell, Carlos Castaneda, Wayne Dyer, and even the movie Yes Man, we explore the relationship between intuition and logic and the fine line between intuition and fear. How do you hear, trust, and use your intuition? When making important decisions, which should have the last word: your intuitive gut or your logical brain?

    Episode Transcript

Questions for Reflection from the EpisodeHow do you personally define intuition? Does it play a significant role in your decision-making?Have you ever experienced a situation where your intuition told you to do something, but your logical mind was hesitant or extremely resistant?Do you believe there is an intersection between intuition and spirituality? Is it possible to seek confirmation or guidance from a higher power when you're making an intuitive decision?

Looking at your own life, can you identify any major decisions or moments where your intuition played a significant role? How do you think those situations would have unfolded if you had ignored your intuition? Or if you ignored your intuition, how would they have unfolded if you hadn't?

How do YOU differentiate between fear and intuition? Are there any specific signs or indicators that help you distinguish between the two?

How important is intuition in your decision-making process? Do you believe that intuition is a reliable guide for making life decisions, or do you think your decision-making should always include logical reasoning?

Do you feel that it's necessary to receive confirmation that your intuition was right to consider it a successful decision?

Currently fascinated by the flow state, Tyler has experimented with bouncing from one creative outlet to another on any given day and has not only gained a deeper understanding of himself but has also fully embraced being "kinda bad" at many cool things.

In this episode, Tyler tells us how creative expression, without the expectation of it being perfect (or even good), is an incredible tool for mental health. He believes that every one of us is creative and we each have "a thing." According to Tyler, you should do whatever inspires you - even if you suck at it.

  • E14 | Finding The Path To Wholeness with Annie Chevalier: Part 2

In this follow-up with Annie just three weeks after our first conversation, she talks openly and honestly about her battle with anxiety. As she mentally prepared for the experiments we suggested in last week's episode, she admits that the anxiety was even more of a hurdle than her pain.

  • E13 | Finding The Path To Wholeness with Annie Chevalier: Part 1

Sometimes you feel stuck, and that's okay.

    Because, well, life.

You're busy coping with the latest emergency, struggle, or high-stakes situation, and by the time it's resolved, you've developed unhealthy habitual patterns of being that are hard to shake.

Our guest this week, Annie, was on track to live the life she wanted. She had a thriving career, a happy marriage, and a newborn son.

But then a car accident derailed everything.

Not only did her injuries leave her with chronic pain, but she's been in limbo for thirteen years, unable to work while the insurance company deliberates.

During this time, she's been in survival mode and hasn't dared to dream or hope for anything.

Unfortunately, to cope with life experiences like these, sometimes we become a different version of ourselves, possibly one we no longer recognize.

This is what happened to Annie.

Throughout the years, she lost herself - her passions, confidence, and dreams - and became increasingly isolated from others. She was held captive by her pain and immobilized by the opinions of others.

Maybe you can relate to her story.

Has a major life event or traumatic experience changed you in some way? Do you wonder how you'll ever get back to being you?

If so, this episode is for you!
