Have you noticed a spike in people around us joining the ADHD and Autism gang? Let's chat about why that’s happening. It turns out, we’re playing a bit of a catch-up game with these diagnoses and until recently, there were hardly any studies on women and people assigned female at birth (seriously, what took them so long?).
We’ll also chat about how it feels when people hit you with the “oh, but everyone’s got ADHD” comment – spoiler alert: it can feel pretty insulting. Plus, some cool celebs who are helping to ditch the stigma (shoutout to Em Rusciano and her awesome National Press Club address that you can check out here!)

Ever feel like you’re a sitting duck when it comes to getting stuff done? You’re not alone. As ADHDers, a lack of dopamine and norepinephrine can fry our motivation and energy, making everyday tasks feel like we’re pushing boulders uphill.
This week, we chat about how troubles with reward processing can leave us stuck in the passive action trap, procrastinating and feeling ashamed for not getting things done. But don’t worry, we also share some tips and ideas from body doubling to not sitting down, to help you beat the avoidance and get moving!
We also chat about a cool Thriveworks article - you can check it out here:

Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) is something that a lot of ADHDers experience and usually manifests as a really strong emotional or even physical reaction to the idea of rejection or failure - cue the procrastination!
We talk about how RSD pops up in daily life and James shares his own experiences from the emotional reactions to those avoidance spirals and the negative self-talk.
Hang around until the end for our ‘AD Moment of the Week’.

It’s a very valid point - is it worth all the time, stress, effort and $$$ of being formally diagnosed, if you’re not planning to try ADHD medication?
We delve into the pros and cons of seeking out a formal assessment, and discuss why it might be really helpful for some people… and not so much for others.
A must to listen to if you’re thinking about going through the diagnostic process yourself, or know someone who is.

We decided to move house recently. And not just any old move. We relocated interstate (hello, Melbourne!).
Why? Er…. because we’re ADHDers. And we’re not good at staying in one place.
Moving house can be a struggle for those who are neurodivergent (hey - we’ve heard it’s even hard if you’re neurotypical!).
So we thought we’d share what went well, what didn’t go well, and our top tips for staying sane throughout the process.

Ok… so the month we planned to take off actually turned into more like 9 months. (Sorry about that!)
But - we had a LOT going on (some planned, some definitely NOT planned), and our first priority is always self-care. Tune in for a quick explanation of what the hell happened, and why we had to park the podcast for a while.
But… we missed you! And we’ve been looking forward to getting this back up and running for aaaaaages…
We’re finally back, and we really hope you like the next season of LD ADHD :)

Ahhhhh… The Dreaded ADHD Burnout Cycle.
Or as James and Jules named him… “Barry Burnout.”
He sneaks up on you when you least expect it. He lures you in with promises of novelty, excitement, fun, and success. He tempts you with a shiny new object. And once you’re committed, he transforms into overwhelm, drudgery and pain.
Why do we all keep doing it?
James and Jules compare their burnout styles - as an AuDHDer, James experiences more of a sensory overload. Whereas Jules prefers more of a classic ADHD “thrill of the chase, then get shitty when I have to grind it out” approach ;)
They also chat about how to spot Barry, how to stop him in his tracks before he gets a foot-hold, and how to recover when you find yourself in burnout in the future.

Meet Faye, the founder of Untoxicated, and a “grey area” drinking coach.
She was a heavy drinker for many years, but never really saw herself as an alcoholic, because on paper her life looked pretty successful. That was until 2017, when she wound up in hospital from her drinking. But she turned it all around, and part of her comeback story is that she has created a thriving community of people who are also giving up alcohol.
And you know what? She’s also a late diagnosed ADHDer. So we got her on the show to pick her brain about the connection between ADHD and addiction, and what we can do about it.

We know we should do it. We know it's good for us. But sometimes it's so harrrd to get started. We're talking about exercise, or simply just getting out and moving your body.
James and Jules share their own experiences about what's worked for them over the years, both before and after finding out they were ADHDers (and it's no surprise that they're sometimes polar opposite in their answers, lol).
And they also throw in a sprinkling of science about which types of workouts you might want to avoid if you're on stimulant medications or feeling anxious or wired.

As ADHDers, we know how hard it can be to eat healthy meals. There’s so much conflicting info out there on which foods to eat and which ones to avoid. And then there’s all the cooking and prep time (SNORE!).
But what if you could just tweak a couple of things with your meals, to give you more energy and focus throughout the day?
I know we said a while back that we’re not going to offer advice… but we’re breaking all the rules now! Because there are some simple things that we do (and that Jules does with her naturopathic clients) that can be a real game changer. And we want you to know about it too.
Oh - and if you don’t feel hungry on stimulant meds - don’t worry - we’ve got you covered, so listen in for tips on that too ;)

Meet Narelle - she found out 3 years ago that she’s both Autistic and an ADHDer - a double-neurospicy brain type commonly referred to as “AuDHD.”
AuDHDers often find themselves pulled in 2 different directions, as the different parts of our brains try to coexist in the same person. For example - one part of you might thrive on variety, whereas another part of you feels safer when there is consistency.
To make things even more interesting, Narelle is a professional organiser (say whattt… and ADHDer who organises OTHER people??). Which makes her pretty awesome in our eyes! So we had to get her on the show.
In this episode we talk about:
Why getting a formal diagnosis can be empowering. Adjusting to family life after finding out you’re neurodivergent. The grief process and other emotions after getting a diagnosis later in life. Seeking out a naturopath and finding natural coping strategies, instead of taking meds right now (but also being open to meds in the future).Want to connect with Narelle?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. As late-diagnosed ADHDers, we can pretty much all look back and see the ADHD signs that were missed. Cluttered bedrooms, dodgy school reports, chronic forgetfulness, time blindness, relationship struggles, work struggles… the list goes on.
In this episode, James and Jules will share the warning signs that are soooo obvious now, but were missed at the time - and the effect that being undiagnosed can have on self-esteem, self-expression and life choices.

Meet Angie. She was diagnosed with ADHD before it was cool. She grew up in Far North Queensland on a large property, where running amok was considered “normal” and hyperactivity was something that you just burned off outdoors before coming in for dinner.
In this episode we chat about:
The wait times for getting assessed. The sudden rise in adult ADHD diagnoses, and why that can be a double edged sword. Misconceptions around ADHD (there’s still such a lack of awareness out there!). Her family’s reactions to her ADHD diagnosis. Why she went from being anti-medication to later finding it helpful. Self-acceptance and self-compassion. Becoming an advocate for the ADHD community.Want to connect with Angie? You can find her website here:

James and Jules are back this week, and this time they’ve done a little bit of a crowd poll on social media. The question they asked was “What’s your LEAST favourite ADHD symptom?”
Tune in as we read out the answers!
(We might add a few symptoms of our own too, including some that may surprise you.)

Meet Erica and Glenn - a neurodivergent couple who have both been diagnosed later in life.
They had an inkling that something was going on fairly early in the relationship, but it took several years to realise that it was ADHD.
In this episode, we talk about:
Early signs of ADHD in school reports, and negative/unkind comments from teachers. Misdiagnosis prior to ADHD. Low self worth and being hard on ourselves as ADHDers. Post-diagnosis grief. Masking. Glenn’s experience with stimulant meds… and what happened when Ritalin had the opposite effect. How ADHD couples can help each other, and tips for better communication and understanding in relationships. Why ADHDers are some of the bravest people out there!Want to connect with Erica and Glenn?

This week we unpack what it’s like to be in a relationship where BOTH people are ADHDers. We talk about the pitfalls and challenges, but also the fun stuff… and maybe even a few tips thrown in (even though we’re definitely NOT relationship coaches or counsellors!).
Themes discussed in this episode include:
Chemistry and attraction, and why ADHDers are often drawn to each other. Why arguments can escalate quickly, and dealing with emotional regulation issues. Rejection sensitivity dysphoria, and why it can cause issues in relationships. Choosing to go childfree. The boring stuff (ugh - housework and chores!). The highlights of being an ADHD couple. If you’re in a relationship where both partners are ADHDers, this episode is a MUST. (Oh - and if you’re in a relationship where your partner is neurotypical, maybe play this for them, heehee…)

Meet Alexx - a podcaster with her own show called Low Tox Life, and a freshly diagnosed ADHDer.
Like many of us who are late-diagnosed, she first started to realise she was an ADHDer when her son was also going through an assessment. She talks about the crisis point that occurred that caused her to plunge into depression. And then we cover the process she went through in order to get her own assessment.
We also unpack some of the reflections and emotions that came up after diagnosis, and chat about some of the hardships around making life-long friendships as an ADHDer.
We throw around some ideas about steps that workplaces could take to become more neurodivergent-friendly, and how it could be transformative for both businesses and their team members.
Alexx brings up a great concept - that we’re not broken, and we don’t need fixing - we’re actually an integral part of society. We just need the world to become more neurodivergent friendly, so that we can start to shine instead of struggling.

In this episode we chat about the current increase in ADHD late diagnosis. We discuss the potential reasons why people can be overlooked for an assessment for all of their childhood and (for some) - a large chunk of their adult lives.
We talk about the different ways that ADHD can present, and why this can cause some ADHDers to fly under the radar, especially during school years. Spoiler alert - if you’re NOT hyperactive… then your ADHD may go unnoticed for longer. We also talk about why parents may have turned a blind eye to ADHD symptoms in their kids.
So many of us didn’t look like the “stereotypical” ADHD picture if we’re intelligent, or if we look “successful” in life! So we go unnoticed until finally the wheels fall off. (Hellooo… burnout!)
We also unpack a topic called “masking,” which is where ADHDers make an effort (either consciously or unconsciously) to hide their ADHD traits and appear neurotypical, in order to fit in and be accepted… which can lead to more problems down the track.

Of course, we all know that a formal diagnosis with a psychologist or psychiatrist is the gold standard… but loads of people are self-identifying as ADHDers… and we’re cool with that.
Want to know why?
Then you’ll need to listen to this episode as we talk about the barriers to formal diagnosis, the reasons people might not be able to go through the process right now, and why we will welcome you into our spicy brain club anyway.
In order to be balanced, we also cover the risks of self-diagnosis, because there are definitely some things to look out for (hello… comorbidities!).
