  • What if My Print on Demand Designs Suck?

Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!

This morning, we are talking about a really important topic that can feel a little daunting but is also really exciting: Working with Print on Demand designs that may not be the best when you're first starting. Here's what we'll be chatting about!

Your Designs Are Going to Suck at FirstIt's Okay if Your Designs Aren't Great!Listing Products Helps With GrowthSometimes, Bad Designs Sell! You Will Get Better if You Start and Stay Consistent!

And a link to that wolf shirt I mentioned!

Want to know this episode in one quote? You know I've always got you!

"When you start Print on Demand, there is a LOT to learn. You need to learn the platform you’re selling on, you need to learn what you like to design and, most importantly, you need to learn how to design. And when that’s done? You need to get a read on how people receive your designs.

Does that mean you should wait to start listing your design? Does it mean that you should overthink the designs? Does it mean that you should be embarrassed of what you’re creating. Absolutely not! I think it means the exact opposite: Get started! Because your designs? They’re probably going to suck. It might just be the first ten. It might just be the first hundred. Or it might be the first thousand. Whatever it is, that’s okay!

In any creative - or honestly just business - field, it is very common to hear stories of success. Those stories are incredible and so inspiring, too! But! Just because someone else had things click immediately, it doesn’t mean every seller will. What we can do, though, is pay attention to what works for our individual shops over time. When we start, our designs are not going to be incredible out of the gate."

Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!

Today, we are talking about something that's super similar to niching down but with a totally different approach: identifying your ideal customer for you print on demand business. This is a really fun episode and I hope you have so much fun listening to this + identifying your ideal customer. Here's a few things we'll be chatting about!

Want to know this episode in one quote? I've got you!

"Once you’ve started learning the ins and out of designing, when your first sales have been made, you’ve added low cost and high cost items to your store, and you can spot a trend happening in your sales, it’s time to ask yourself: who’s my ideal customer?

... When we boil down the idea of an ideal customer, it really comes down to this: it’s easier to build your designs, items, and vibe if you have a specific type of person you’re creating items for."

  • Offering High Cost and Low Cost Items in Your Print on Demand Business

Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!

Today, we are talking about a really fun topic (as always!). That topic? It's about offering high cost and low cost items in your inventory as a way to build up your business and trust in your business, too! Here's a few of the topics we cover!

Diversifying works best when you can identify buying patternsIf people love your items, they'll pay for themDifferent shirt brands have different costsSelling a sticker v selling a tee shirtWhy selling low cost items can build trust in your shop

Want to know this episode in one quote? Hooray!

"When we start with print on demand, it’s really easy to get laser focused on one thing. Whether that’s a specific niche, design style, or item type, it’s hard to pull away from the idea of what we want our shop and items to be. Once you start seeing buying patterns, though, you’ll see your shop start to evolve.

As you identify buying habits, you’ll have more data and more room to grow. To do this, you don’t need thousands - or even hundreds - of sales but, when you start to see patterns come to life, adding low cost and high cost items can really help with your shop growth. And when I’m talking about shop growth? I’m not necessarily talking about profit - I’m talking about creating a consistent, awesome experience for your customers at different price points with different items."

  • Creating Collections in Your Print on Demand Business

Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!

As always, this episode today is a freaking blast! We are talking all about creating collections - basically design niches and topic niches - within our print on demand listings. Here's the topics we cover!

How Collections Make Design Work More FunCan Collections Help with Burnout? How Can Collections Expand Creativity? How Can Collections Expand Inventory? What if the Collections Don't All Go Together? Will My Store Keep a Vibe if I Embrace a Different Design Style?

Want To Know This Episode in One Quote? You Know I've Got You!

Creating collections - whether you’re literally making collections or just kind of grouping styles - is a great way to approach print on demand. First, it keeps design fresh and fun. Second, it’s easier to avoid burnout. Third, it’s an awesome way to expand your creativity.

As a digital collage creator (lol) / shirt designer, I just really like making fun stuff. And if you’re here? I’m guessing you do, too! Don’t feel like you need to put yourself in a box when you hit a groove. Think of different styles as a way to grow and blend your inventory instead!

  • Should I Follow Trends in My Print on Demand Business?

Welcome to the second season of Lissa Talks Print on Demand! A professional photographer since 2011 and a print on demand shop owner since 2022, I have so much to share with you!

Today, I am so excited to chat with y'all about one of my favorite creative topics: Trends! I love a trend and also am so passionate about carving out your own individual style. Here's what we are talking about today!

Trends Are AwesomeAsk Yourself: Do You Like a Trend? The Ask Yourself: What Do You Like?Trends are Good; Style is BetterWhy is Style Better?Make the Weird Stuff

Want To Know This Episode in One Quote? Wonderful!

Y’all! This topic is so close to my heart. It’s something I’m so passionate about with photography and something I’ve become even more passionate through selling mockups and print on demand. And that topic? It’s this! How important is it to follow trends?

If you start to listen to a lot of content about print on demand, you’ll see a ton of content about trends. There’s absolutely value in this and it’s also a great place to start. However, if you want to build something that has more opportunity for expansion, you’ll want to dig a little deeper. It’s a little scary and a lot of vulnerable but, trust me, you’ll be so much happier in the long run.

Want to Know This Episode in One Quote? You Know I've Always Got You!

"Often, we see print on demand recommended as a side hustle or a way to leave your desk job. What if you want something different? As a longtime photographer, I knew two things:

I Wanted to Diversify My IncomeI Didn’t Want to Stop Shooting

Yes! I wanted to diversify but I also didn’t want to leave my career. While I’ve never had a traditional desk job, leaving my job was never something I wanted. Instead, I wanted to supplement my income in a different way. Personally, I set out to design a few photographer shirts. Instead, I ended up with two enormous Etsy shops. And it’s been fantastic! I feel so strongly that any creative - a designer, a painter, an illustrator, a photographer, a writer - can take print on demand and use it an a way to fit into their career.

Maybe for one person that’s creating tote bags with your paintings. Maybe for another it’s a huge shop full of items with witty phrases. For me, it’s a bunch of fun collages that spiraled into a brand new genre of photography. Remember, there’s no one right way to do anything. And the way print on demand is set up? The sky is really the limit!"

Want to know this episode in one quote? I've got you!

"When you’re selling print on demand, it make sense to focus on one platform oat a time. Once you have the feel of one, though, don’t be afraid to build out!

I also recommend testing on one marketplace - typically a platform like Etsy - to see what gets clicks and what doesn’t. While selling is the ultimate goal, all data is good data. While data is definitely impacted by things like keywords, once you get your shop up and running, you’ll have repeat buyers. Sometimes, I think I’ve crushed a design and no one clicks on it. Sometimes, I do a half hearted attempt at something and it has a favorite immediately. You never know until you know!"

Want to know this episode in one quote? I've got you!

Think of it like this: If you like designing, you’d be doing it anyway. While I don’t think that every shop needs thousands of listings to be successful, I do think scaling your work is a great way to practice your design skill set, practice your listings, and even practice the way you create mockups and research keywords. You do not need to build your shop in a day and you are not a failure if it takes you years to build your shop up to what you want. This is normal! It’s an exception to make a lot of money quickly, not the rule.

  • Unique Ways to Market Your Print on Demand Business

Welcome to my limited series on Print on Demand! In our fifteenth (and final!) episode I discuss:

10 Ways to Market Your POD ShopHow More Advertising = More RecognitionMarketing Within Your Genre

Wanna know this episode in one quote? I got you!

"When you’re new to business, ads can feel like a bad word. When you’re new to POD, niching down can feel like a bad word. One great thing about POD is that you don’t really need to niche down completely, especially if you’re selling on a platform. However, the more niched down you are, the easier it’s going to be to market.

Here’s what I mean! If you sell floral wall pennants with cute positive affirmations, you can easily start to brainstorm your dream customer. If you sell wall pennants and pillows and candles with no repeat designs or repeat themes, it will be harder to market what you’re creating. See this as an opportunity! The more you build your shop, the more opportunities you’re going to have, both in advertising and overall growth."

NOTE: I am not here to bash AI. As a longtime photographer, though, I thought it would be helpful to address the ways I spot AI images.

Wanna know this episode in one quote? I got you!

"When you’re working with mockups, know that sometimes things are going to vary. For example, the color of a sand sweatshirt is going to look different in a brightly lit photo with a white backdrop than a sand sweatshirt on a dark background lit with a flash. With AI, though, we’re not talking about differences like this. Instead, we are talking about ways to spot AI when looking for your mockups.

As a mockup seller, I’ve noticed an uptick of messages where customers wanted to double check that no AI was used in my mockups. I’ve also noticed an increase in conversations where my customers have felt disappointed when they bought another seller’s mockup only to realize later that it is completely AI generated. Here's the ways I spot 'em! "

Literally forever obsessed with Printify. I use Printify for all of my print on demand printing and I'll never stop singing their praises. They're incredible!

For design work, I'm totally in love with Canva and also love finding extra artwork + fonts on Creative Fabrica and Creative Market.

For photography, I shoot with a Canon R6 and most of my mockup photographs are taken with the 35L or 50L. I do all of my editing in Adobe Lightroom and have since 2011! It's my jam!

  • Expanding Your Niche in Print on Demand

Focusing on a niche means you'll eventually run out of ideas, right? Wrong! Lol.

In this episode, we'll talk all about how to expand your niche across multiple design styles and genres. Here's some topics we discuss!

    Don't Get Obsessed with Niches
How I Niche To a Feeling
Don't Feel Constricted By a Niche
How a Design Style + Series Can Help You Expand
Unique Ways to Expand Your Niche

You can see my Print on Demand Etsy shop here!

"Since I’ve been involved in Print on Demand, I have seen so many negative comments that the items aren’t unique. And, while there is occasionally some truth to that, I love Print on Demand because we can really just create whatever you want to create.

If you’re listening to this, that might mean that you really just want to create shirts with rainbows. It might mean you want to make shirts with minimal text that say ridiculous things like “I like salt and pepper but paprika is better”. Is that a shirt I’d wear? No. Is it something I could totally see a funny cook wearing? Absolutely!

Your niche isn’t just about a certain type of item or a certain occupation or interest within an interest. Your niche is about YOU. What do you like? What is fun for you to create? How can you make this work with whatever is selling on your shop?"

  • Scaling Your Designs With More Products in Your Print on Demand Business

If you design a tee shirt, should you turn it into a sweatshirt, too? If a mug totally bombs, should you axe it or put it on something else and try again? All your questions about product scaling are answered here! Get ready to learn cause this one is a fun one!

Welcome to my limited series on Print on Demand! In our eighth episode I discuss:

Start With Products You LikeDifferent Products Have Different DemandDecide When You Want to Start ScalingKnow What Items Have Similar DimensionsHow to Reformat Your Designs for New ItemsRemember That There is No One Right Way To Do Anything

Wanna know this episode in one quote? I got you!

"Remember that we cannot control our sales. We can however, control our designs, the end products we choose, and listings / product pages we put out into the world. If we don’t put it out, it won’t sell.

If you don’t create designs, you will not get better at designing. Personally, I don’t think I will ever be a great designer and I don’t think of myself as a designer - I think of myself as someone who can create really fun digital collages on Canva. They bring me so much joy and my customers so much joy, too! And that’s incredible! For me, that’s the goal. Of course I want to make money but I also just, like, love making people feel joy when they purchase something from me. And by offering different product types on my Print on Demand shop? I’m able to do this!"

  • Scaling Your Designs With More Designs in Your Print on Demand Business

If you design a coffee mug of a raccoon wearing sunglasses and it starts flying off your online shelves, how can you keep momentum growing? And how can you stop anyone from stealing your design? All the info you need is here!

Welcome to my limited series on Print on Demand! In our seventh episode I discuss:

Does More Designs = More Sales? How To Keep Momentum GrowingValidating a Niche Within Your Own StoreProtecting Your Work By ExpandingBuilding Out From Customer RequestsDeciding What to Keep + What to Retire

Wanna know this episode in one quote? I got you!

"Imagine that, one spring, you throw a few sunflower seed packets into a patch of dirt. Because nothing was planted - just thrown - only three sunflowers survive. Each sunflower is a different variety. So, that first year, there’s just three sunflowers. You freaking love these sunflowers and, without knowing much about sunflowers, decide to save ten seeds from each these three sunflowers. Of these sunflowers seeds, ten become mature, blooming sunflowers the next year. So, at the end of that year, you save ten more and you have the same survival rate.

You started with three sunflowers thrown into a patch of dirt. The next year, you have ten sunflowers. The third year? You have thirty. And that same year? You decide you want to add in a few new sunflower varieties and, by that summer, you have a booming flower patch of 50 sunflowers. They’re all different kinds of sunflowers - some short, some tall, some yellow, some orange - but they’re all sunflowers. And they all branched out because you had the idea to throw a few sunflower packets onto a patch of dirt."
