40 years ago, one of the greatest concert films ever made was released: STOP MAKING SENSE by the Talking Heads. The film has recently been re-released in a beautifully remastered format by A24. Anthony, Stephanie, Rob and Alan review in-depth the new release of this classic film which captures a band at the height of their confidence; We'll talk about the first time we ever saw the film, our favorite songs, the supporting musicians, why this film is so important, and how it compares to David Byrne's more recent concert film, American Utopia. And Rob shares his experiences playing host at one of the premiere screenings!

Our recent episodes on 1984 and Purple Rain have really put us in a particular mood, so now we're waxing nostalgic (pun intended) about the heyday of cassette culture! We're joined by author ROB DREW, whose new book Unspooled: How the Cassette Made Music Shareable examines the enormous impact that cassettes had on the music industry and cultural landscape. Our conversation ranges from the art and science of mix tapes to indie metal and punk bands who spread their music via cassettes, and from how the cassette changed the way artists recorded albums to congressional hearings to decide if home taping should be illegal.

Continuing our examination of the music of 1984, we took a little time to celebrate one of the most important albums of that year: Purple Rain by Prince. We're joined by a good friend of ours, Jason de la Torre, a very knowledgeable Prince fan, to talk about this landmark album. Our discussion ranges from how we first came to know this album and when we first saw the film, to the album's legacy and our favorite Prince concert experiences. We talk about our favorite songs, and the 2017 expanded reissue as well.

1984 was an incredible year for music, and it was a particularly strong year for hard rock and metal. We're joined by guests Courtland Lewis and Matt Alschbach of the Rock and Metal Profs Podcast for a great discussion of what factors made 1984 such a highwater mark for the genre, and we review some of our favorite releases of the year. We spotlight albums by Van Halen, KISS, Dio, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Queenryche, Ratt, Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions, plus a whole lot more. Filmmaker Olivia Serafini-Sauli hung around the New York music scene in the 90s, and she always had her camera at the ready. So when her friends in the band The New Rising Sons were on the verge of having all their dreams come true, she was there to chronicle it. However, in spite of sold out shows, a major label record deal, and a debut album recorded at a legendary studio, the band's dream came to a sudden end.
Now, 30 years later, the debut NRS album has finally been released on Arctic Rodeo Recordings, and Olivia has taken all of her archival footage plus brand new interviews with band members, producers, record execs, and our very own Stephanie Seymour (who was a friend of the band and worked at Virgin Records when they were signed) to tell the complete story of the New Rising Sons.

Jeff Slate and Earl Slick first met over 15 years ago. In that time they have performed and recorded together many times. Jeff is a guitarist, producer, frontman, journalist, regular guest host on SiriusXM. and ASCAP songwriter. Earl is a legendary guitarist, most known for his long association with David Bowie, his work on the Double Fantasy album with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and his collaborations with Robert Smith, Slim Jim Phantom & Lee Rocker, John Waite, David Coverdale, and more.
Our conversation focuses on Jeff's new album The Last Day of Summer (on which Earl played guitar), and Earl's new biography called Guitar (co-written by Jeff). We also get some great stories about how they became friends, touring with Bowie, working with Dave Stewart, journalistic integrity, selling real estate, what music greats they'd love to work with, and a whole lot more!

Rock fans would have first gotten to know Michael Cartellone from his work as the drummer in the band Damn Yankees with Tommy Shaw, Jack Blades, and Ted Nugent. After that, he joined the band Accept, and since 1999 he has been the drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd, with whom he has toured extensively and played on eight albums. He’s worked with many other artists over the years, like Peter Frampton, John Fogerty, Freddie Mercury, and Eddie Jobson. But he’s also an accomplished visual artist. His work has been featured on NBC, CBS, CNN, twice on the cover of Fine Arts Magazine, and in a full-page article in The Washington Post. His work has had Gallery Exhibitions in New York City (Soho), Los Angeles, Phoenix, Long Island, and Las Vegas, and will be featured in a new exhibition called Bella Italia, this May in Asheville, NC. In our interview, we talk about both his music and art career, his time in Damn Yankees, some of our favorite paintings, his love for Charlie Chaplin films, and much more.

This week we have the privilege of speaking with Ian Wright of the band The Jack Rubies! The band first hit the scene in the mid-80s with a series of British singles. After signing to TVT Records, they released two full-length albums, Fascinatin' Vacation in 1988 and See The Money in My Smile in 1990. They're now back, 34 years later, with their new album Clocks Are Out of Time on Big Stir Records. We talk with Ian about the band's history, the new deal with Big Stir, the journey to regain control of their masters from TVT, and how the new album was put together across two continents in the middle of a global pandemic.

Following the 1985 American Music Awards, the reigning elite of pop music all convened at A&M Studios to record the vocals for what would become one of the biggest singles in music history, "We Are the World". Spearheaded by Harry Belafonte, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson, the session gathered together some of the most successful and legendary artists of the day -- Diana Ross, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Bette Midler, the Pointer Sisters, Kenny Loggins, Paul Simon, Willie Nelson and more, plus some of the newer superstars on the scene, including Huey Lewis and the News, Cyndi Lauper, and Sheila E -- to record a song that would be used to raise money for the extreme famine happening in Ethiopia. And it's all captured in the new documentary "The Greatest Night in Pop" about the making of "We Are the World", available on Netflix.

Craig has worked with artists like Hanson, Little Big Town, Amy Grant, Andrew Bell, and Brittany Howard, as well as on projects ranging from metal to symphonic to African marimba bands. He engineered the three most recent Kasey Musgraves albums, including the massive Grammy winner Golden Hour (2018) and her newest record, Deeper Well (released March 15, 2024). In February of 2024, he announced the opening of his brand new studio, Noble Steed, in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Our conversation covers his career, very nerdy questions about his new studio, Country Music gatekeepers, and his love of Yacht Rock.

On March 18, 1974 the debut album by Canadian power trio RUSH was released. Since then, they have become one of the biggest bands in the world, with a fanbase unlike any other. This week, Alan is joined by Gerry Schramm of the Something For Nothing podcast, and Vicki Hudson, lead vocalist of the tribute band The Spirit of Rush, to talk about that debut album, and our deep and abiding love for Rush. We discuss some favorite concert memories, working within the Rush fan community, our favorite album from every decade of Rush's career, and of course, Rush Mustard.

On February 11, Beyonce surprise-released a new country-western single, "Texas Hold 'Em", along with a second song "16 Carriages", the first two singles from her upcoming country music album. The song became the first recording by a Black woman to gain the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, despite some country radio stations initially refusing to play it. Rob and Alan, joined by good buddy JM Tuffley, take a listen to the new songs and turn the conversation to other artists who have crossed genre lines in their career, like David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Ray Charles, and many others (even Ethel Merman!).
