  • A family-driven career break can be the start of your next big thing. That was certainly the case for my guest on this week’s Money, Career & Motherhood podcast.

Kathryn Wepfer was a highly accomplished working professional excited about her work, until the birth of her second child. When she was unable to extend her maternity leave after her second daughter was born, Kathryn did something she never expected to – she quit her job to spend more time bonding with her new daughter.

While out on her extended break, Kathryn did something else she hadn’t expected to do – start a business. Now, as the founder of Fulcrum Apparel, Kathryn is able to improve the return to work experience for new working mothers, use her professional skills, and be an active and engaged mother.

    About the Guest:

She began her career as a mechanical engineer for General Electric, earned an MBA from MIT, and spent much of her career in various roles at Microsoft. She founded Fulcrum Apparel in 2019 to elevate workwear for moms navigating the pumping process. • When I first met today’s guest, she said something that hit me hard. “There will always be a breakdown in childcare.” It’s true. This is why solutions for parents who take career breaks are so important to me. Even with flexible employers, things come up when you have kids. Sometimes the challenges are so great that parents, usually mothers, take career breaks to solve these problems.

Priya Amin is the co-founder of an innovative virtual childcare company called Flexible Care. She left a thriving career for a family-driven career break and has since dedicated her career to being part of the solution for working parents by founding Flexible Care. In this episode, Priya and I discuss the challenges working parents’ face, the evolution of Flexible Care as she and her co-founder try to navigate the needs of parents, as well as the challenges she faced in funding the business’ growth. We talk openly about remaining solution-focused in her startup when the original plan didn’t work and her advice for female founders who are trying to seek investors for their business. The Flexible Care team successfully raised nearly $1 million in funding, yet it was ironically childcare that presented one of its biggest barriers to funding.

    About the Guest:

Priya Amin is an entrepreneur, TEDx speaker and mother to two boys, Ronin and Kirin. She holds an MBA from the University of Arizona, and worked as a product and brand manager at corporations such as IBM and Nestle. In 2012, she left her high powered career to be home with her two boys, and never looked back. After successfully launching and running a marketing consulting firm called ROKI, she began looking for ways to continue fostering creativity and entrepreneurship among women. She launched Flexable, LLC in 2016 and was accepted to the 16th cohort of the AlphaLab Accelerator program in 2016. Flexable has gained regional and national attention for providing innovative childcare solutions, most notably on-site childcare at offices and events. Since the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Flexable pivoted to offering Virtual Childcare hosted by fully vetted Flexable Facilitators to keep kids 3-10 years old engaged, so working parents can take back their schedule.

  • According to my guest Michelle Arpin Begina, there’s a very big difference between income and wealth. I couldn’t agree more. Too often families are caught up in a spending pattern to create an illusion of wealth, when in fact they’re struggling financially. In this week’s episode, I talk with Michelle about the complex relationship she developed with money as a child through her family experiences, what change you really need to focus on to improve your financial situation, and how to use your life’s successes unrelated to money to meet your financial goals.

    About the Guest:

Michelle’s earliest memories from childhood all relate to money. And yet, the stories and lessons learned from different branches of her family tree couldn’t be more dichotomous!

Michelle has used the money lessons from her life to rethink how financial advisors and their clients have traditionally worked together. Rather than thinking of her role as a gatekeeper of portfolios, she sees real value in being a gateway to personal financial freedom.

To support her clients on their unique wealth journeys, Michelle is a technician of financial planning, investment, and wealth management. But what differentiates Michelle from other financial advisors is that she has spent the last two-plus decades studying the unconventional, non-financial aspects of life satisfaction, financial therapy (it’s a thing), behavioral bias, choice, and decision advising.

She believes we all need to examine the money stories, scripts, and lessons that affect our financial psychology so that we can rethink what we know about money to have more of it.

Michelle lives in Wyckoff, NJ with her husband, Mike and sons, Alex and Nick. She is an avid photographer – her sons are her favorite subject!

  • Whether you’re searching for a new position while employed or looking to return to the workforce after an extended career break, it’s hard to break through the hundreds of other candidates looking competing for the same positions as you. For many families, college feels impossible without a significant amount of debt, except for maybe superstar athletes or valedictorians who get scholarships. But many of the things we believe about the college application process are holding families back from attaining scholarship support for their student’s schooling. My guest today, Denise Thomas, is here to debunk many of the college scholarship myths and help students attain a debt-free college degree.

    In this episode, we discuss:

The timing of when to start thinking about college applications How to tell the story of who your student is during the college application process What colleges are looking for when they award scholarships

    About the Guest:

  • Many women spend a long time thinking through the implications of a career break before they actually decide to take one. Then after it starts, they dive into non-work life without thinking about how to get back in, even though nearly 90% of women want to return at some point. While you can find a way back into the workforce later, the best time to create a strategy for your return is early in your break.

This week on the podcast listen in on my live coaching session with Kristen Schneider, professional working mom turned recent career breaker and co-host of the MOMGUL, where we discuss her decision to take a career break and what she wants out of her career when she returns.

    In this episode, we discuss:

How a passion project can help you develop the courage to take a career break The traps of busyness that can creep up after leaving your career Recognizing the personal changes that occur during a career break, and how they influence the success of your future return to work How to develop personal, professional, and networking strategies designed to help you return to a career that works with your life when you’re ready

  • Too many adults are living lives where they feel like passive participants rather than the creators of their destiny. In this eye-opening discussion with Julie Lythcott-Haims about her new book, Your Turn: How to Be an Adult, we discuss the challenges many individuals face as they attempt to step into their adult life, the actions that caused a generational shift in how we view adulting, and what is possible when we step into the adult life we were meant to lead.

    In this episode you’ll learn:

How the fundamental capacities of agency and resilience are underdeveloped in young adults who were over-parented as children How fear and learned helplessness can result as an adult for those who aren’t given the opportunity to grow independently The questions we need to ask ourselves when trying to quiet the voice of what others think we should do and begin acting on what we want our path to be

  • School can be a challenge for kids who learn differently, have special needs, or have behavioral issues. My guests, Vickie Brett and Amanda Selogie, attorneys who specialize in specific civil rights issues on behalf of children living with special needs, discuss the challenges families can face in advocating for their children within the school system and the importance of creating an individualized plan for a student’s education plan. We also discuss mental health at school, including how anxiety or depression can present in the school setting, how it affects learning, and the importance of developing a solution to the root cause of an issue a student is facing rather than the behavioral symptom.

    About the Guest:

Amanda Selogie & Vickie Brett are co-founders of Selogie & Brett LLP, a boutique civil rights litigation firm specializing in specific civil rights issues on behalf of children living with special needs, as well as co-founders of the Inclusive Education Project, a legal advocacy 501(c)3 non-profit, focused on educating families on their legal rights to their child’s education and providing pro-bono legal aide to low income families in California. They are also hosts of the Inclusive Education Project Podcast, where Amanda and Vickie offer a fresh, smart perspective on what it takes to truly make our educational systems and communities inclusive. And as if that weren’t enough, they are both mothers navigating the world of work and life like the rest of us.

Amanda Selogie received a degree in Child and Adolescent Development, specializing in Education from California State University, Northridge and a Juris Doctorate from Whittier Law School. While at WLS, Amanda was a Fellow in the prestigious Center for Children's Rights Fellowship Program, served in the school's pro-bono Special Education Legal Clinic, and as Research Editor of the Journal of Child and Family Advocacy.

Amanda immersed herself in the world of civil rights and educational advocacy as a supervising attorney for UCI Law School's Education Rights Pro-bono project, and being appointed to the Orange County Child Care and Development Planning Council where she is currently serving on their Inclusion Collaborative Committee and outside of work, where she serves as a coach to an AYSO VIP (Very Important Player) program where she not only coaches players living with disabilities but has established an inclusive program with typical peers and mainstream teams.

Vickie Brett was born and raised in Southern California. Vickie attended UC Riverside and received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Philosophy before becoming a very active Whittier Law School student and alumnus.

Because Vickie is bilingual, she represents and empowers many monolingual Spanish-speaking families living in Southern California. Moreover, she is a dedicated pro bono attorney for Public Law Center, the Alliance for Children’s Rights, and the Superior Court of Los Angeles’s Juvenile and Dependency 317(e) Panel. Most recently Vickie became a supervisor for the UCI Law School’s Pro Bono Special Education Law Project.

  • This is an encore episode that originally aired on June 2, 2020.

Meal planning is a great way to save money by cooking more at home, but only if it works for your family! Too often busy moms try to meal plan but because of our ever-changing schedules, picky eaters, and little time to cook, it doesn’t work. Today we’re interviewing Marie Fiebach of the Feed Your Family Tonight Podcast, who will change the way you meal plan for your family.

    About the Guest:

Marie Fiebach is a married mother of four active kids aged 12-17. In 2017 she founded Feed Your Family Tonight to help busy families eat dinner together at home and recapture a little calm in the crazy. She is a cookbook author, podcaster, and has a weekly cooking segment on her local ABC affiliate. Marie knows how hard it is to get dinner on the table whether you are working until 6:00, running kids to after-school activities, or chasing toddlers all day. She has dealt with picky eaters, food allergies, and busy schedules but still manages to feed her family a home-cooked meal almost every night. She wants to help you do the same.

    IG @MarieFiebach FB Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/FeedYourFamilyTonight/ Website feedyourfamilytonight.com

    About the Host:

Janice Scholl has spent her entire career talking about money and business. Through her time as a commercial banker, consultant and mentor to budding entrepreneurs, she helped clients create solid business and financial strategies to help propel their business to success. While working with aspiring female entrepreneurs, Janice noticed that the same four themes kept repeating:

Many women are uncomfortable with finance, both in their business and in their personal life. Women want access to more women mentors and advisors. Women often start businesses because they feel the corporate world doesn’t fit their lifestyle. Few are motivated by purely financial reasons. Mothers didn’t want money to drive their family decisions.

From these themes The Money, Career, & Motherhood Podcast was born. Now Janice spends her time helping mothers gain confidence and understanding about money, career, and business topics as they relate to motherhood and family – the way many women actually think about money. Janice loves helping mothers implement business and financial strategies within their families to help each family member thrive.

  • What if rock bottom for your spouse meant your family must risk it all in hopes of getting them the care they need? Could you walk away from your comfortable life for them to get the help they need? Danielle Bettmann, wife, mother, parenting coach, podcast host and this week’s brave guest, is sharing her story as the wife of a husband who suffers from alcoholism. She talks about discovering the extent of his disease, what it felt like to try to carry on as normal with those around her during this battle, and the difficult decision to sell the family home to pay for the in-patient treatment her husband needed to get sober.

The in-patient treatment did work. Danielle’s husband is celebrating 3.5 years sober, while Danielle and her family are in love with their downsized life and their continued focus on people and experiences versus things.

As many as 76 million Americans (around 45 percent of the population) have been exposed to some form of alcoholism or alcoholic behaviors in their family; and as many as 26.8 million of those people are children. Despite its frequency, those who haven’t experienced it firsthand may not realize how close alcoholism is to the ones they know and love, while those struggling with the impact of the disease on their family can feel alone in their struggles. Alcoholism is a disease that affects all family members, and the impact goes beyond relationships.

If you believe that you or a loved one may be suffering from alcoholism, please get help by contacting Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, or a local treatment center.

    About the Guest:

Danielle Bettmann is the owner & parenting coach of Wholeheartedly. She helps families with a strong-willed toddler and a "good cop / bad cop" dynamic find sanity & solutions! Through 1:1 coaching, she helps extend your patience, rewire your parenting mindset and write your Family Business Plan. She's also the host of the Failing Motherhood podcast, working to normalize the struggle and share vulnerable stories of feeling like a "failure", reminding you that YOU are the mom your kids need.
