  • Tracy Hall's story is W I L D 😱

If you haven't heard of her yet, you will NOT forget her quickly after listening to this episode of the podcast.

Tracy is the infamous last victim of Australia's most prolific conman, Hamish McLaren. She lost her life savings to Hamish (A$317,000) and her ability to trust anyone ever again.

Tracy's story was first told in the hit podcast by The Australian WHO THE HELL IS HAMISH? and in May this year she published her memoir THE LAST VICTIM detailing her life and experiences before, during and after her relationship with Hamish.

Tracy's story is not entirely unusualWe all know or have heard of someone who's been scammed and lost money to deceptionIt's everywhere.

What is impressive about Tracy is her ability to articulate her experience and draw lessons to help othersHer story covers so much more than her experiences with Hamish. It delves into the global scams and fraud epidemic, media narratives, shame, grief, trust, resilience, vulnerability, rebuilding, mindset, and victim blaming.

While Tracy's detailed story of lies and deceit at the hands of a notorious, serial conman is so fascinating it's been turned into a hit podcast and is tabled to become a TV series and documentary next year, you'll be surprised to learn that I didn't invite her on the podcast because of her story's content or plot line, so to speak, although it's the kind of stuff movies are made from!

Rather, this episode of Media Magnet is a valuable lesson in the power of storytelling, what happens when you take ownership of your own narrative and how to harness the opportunity to build an entire business based on your brand story alone.

This is an episode for every business owner who's ever doubted their story's purpose or relevance, believing it to be uninteresting or unimportant, and, I hope, illustrates how some distance from your own story allows us the space to see it's true value, be transparent and be OK with being vulnerable enough to share the lessons we've learned along the way.

If you're keen to learn more about Tracy's full story after listening to this episode you can support her, and your local independent bookshop, by buying her book, The Last Victim

Available at all good bookshops now.

  • My guest on the podcast today was so good inside the most recent round of the Media Masters Academy that I just had to get her on the podcast too!

Adella Beaini is a journalist and writer with the Daily Telegraph in Sydney and has covered everything from breaking news, politics, small business, celebrity news, mental health and every topic in between.

Like every journo I know, she has tens of thousands of unread emails in her inbox at any one time and is reporting for a daily newspaper that also has a 24/7 online presence, so she's an extremely busy woman...however if you're looking for a journalist who's going to give you, even as a complete stranger sending your first pitch to her inbox - the time of day - Adella is THE journalist you should reach out to.

Inside this episode we cover trending news topics, why the media constantly need good news sources like you, how to infuse your business into the current media and news headlines of the moment, the best times to pitch, the one time of year when you're most likely to get featured and more!

Listen to the very end of this episode for Adella's incredible offer to all my Media Magnet listeners!!  And be the first to take her up on it! You'd be absolutely crazy not to!

Don't miss this incredible opportunity to listen to one of Australia's rising reporting stars share her inside tips and behind the scenes secrets of how to get featured in one of Australia's top daily newspapers that's syndicated around the country and boasts millions of readers every day.

  • You've probably already heard of my guest on the podcast today, she's got almost 100,000 followers on social media, has written 4 best-selling books, created a super successful personal brand around money mindset and made 25 million dollars in her business in the last decade as a result.

Denise Duffield-Thomas (or DDT as many of her followers have nicknamed her) is the money mentor for the new wave of online entrepreneurs who want to make money and change the world.

Denise's incredible business trajectory tells me two things...firstly there's a huge demand for what she does and, secondly she must serve her clients really, really well because they keep coming back, over and over again!

The catalyst for Denise and I meeting was purely coincidental.  I recently heard her speak at a conference on the Gold Coast and it was her story, sometimes I call this brand story or back story that really struck me.

It was the perfect blend of honesty, altruism, inspiration, motivation, success and failure.  When she shared her story on stage, which I'm sure she's probably done at this point in her career thousands of times, you could hear a pin drop. Everyone was captivated by her journey.

It's the kind of story, I imagine, that never gets old.

And exactly how I teach my students inside my program the Media Masters Academy to share their stories - to take the audience on a journey, to inspire emotion, take action and influence.

So what did I do, I bravely asked her to be my next guest on the podcast and she said yes!

As you'll soon discover for yourself despite her crazy success Denise is genuinely human so while we do talk brand story quite a bit, we also dive into how she found the courage to nail her niche, her strategy and purposeful positioning her area of expertise and the holy grail for most women in business, learning to give less F's about what people think and doing it anyway.

Forget everything you've ever heard about AI until now and listen to this episode of the podcast carefully. In fact, take notes because this one is a game-changer.

If you're using platforms like chatGPT, Vello, Zapier or other chatbots to pitch the media or respond to callouts from services like Sourcebottle, stop right now.

You're burning your bridges with the media, before you've even built them, and on a one way street to getting blacklisted, fast.   Despite what you may have been told, when it comes to pitching the media and generating great free PR - AI produced content is not a time saver at all.

In fact, according to well respected journalists from all over Australia and the world, it's actually a waste of time.  Their time...and they've had enough.

My guest today is Bec Derrington, the founder of Journo and Guest expert match making service, Sourcebottle and a PR Guru with more than a decade of experience in the industry and we're discussing the dangers of AI responses and why, just like your social media feed, more and more the media want to hear from the real YOU, not a robot.

Plus how a simple, conversational pitch that gives a unique POV, conveys a strong opinion and shows lived experience is far more likely to get picked up by the media than any generic chatGPT dupe.

  • Happy Launch Week listeners!

In The Media Masters Academy is open for enrolments from now until Tuesday 3rd September at 8pm AEST.

As promised, here's the second mini-podcast episode for you to celebrate our doors being open, and this one is a cracker from far west Queensland.   Angie Nisbet's business Farm Her Hands has been featured in at least 6 Media publications since she completed the MMA course in July including ABC Radio, Beef TV, Smart Company, Queensland Country Life and just last Monday Angie and her sister were featured in a major story on morning television program Sunrise about internet speeds and how Starlink has helped them build their online business remotely.   She's also in the midst of pitching and negotiating stories for A Current Affair and Landline on the ABC.

Together with her sister Shona, Angie runs FarmHer Hands, a remote e-commerce business creating stylish UPF 50+ work gloves for women in agriculture who are out in the elements. Angie is also the voice behind the podcast "Married to the Land," where she passionately highlights the significance of the agriculture sector.    FarmHer Hands launched in December 2023 and Angie and sister Shona aim to be strong advocates for rural women's health and sparking meaningful conversations about the vital role of agriculture in our lives.

In today's episode Angie shares the incredible response she's had in the media to her business, the opportunities it has created for her and her brand and ultimately the chance to change the national narrative about women on the land.

  • It's Launch Week again for the Media Masters Academy and to celebrate I'm bringing you a couple of mini-episodes of the podcast featuring two of my most recent course alumni who've been smashing their goals and getting featured in the media.

As female founders, women-led businesses, side hustlers and entrepreneurs we've got a LOT on our plates both in business and in life.   I don't want your Media and PR strategy to be just another chore on your To DO List inside the everyday operations of your business.   It needs to be simple, realistic to incorporate into your working week and lay the foundations for media opportunities to continue to flood through your door, year after year.

In my experience in this game women also struggle with overcoming imposter syndrome, selling themselves and releasing they have value to ad as experts in their field.   Today I'm chatting to Bridget Johns of Be Simply Free, who completed the Media Masters Academy in July.

Bridget, an Organisation Expert who specialises in optimising space and time had all those sneaking reservations and more about putting herself out there and growing her business using the media.   Now she's being featured in the Australian Financial Review.

  • Never in her wildest dreams, did entrepreneur Stephanie Trethewey envisage herself married to a farmer and living on a property in remote Central North Tasmania with two small kids.

Stephanie loved her TV career and spent adrenaline fuelled days chasing dodgy tradies down the street for A Current Affair, long night shifts on the news desk and enjoying the pressure of the tight deadlines of a 24 hours newsroom and the fast pace of life in a big city.

Until one day she interviewed a smart and charismatic brand manager for a story she was working on, they fell in love and got married, moved to a farm in Tasmania and the rest is history.

    Well, not quite.

By her own admission, Stephanie had romanticised the idea of what life would be like on the land. With her first born six month old son in tow, her husband now working 7 days a week to build their family business, isolated and miles from anything and anyone, she didn't know a sole...and she struggled bigtime.

Suffering from post natal depression and loneliness, she was without the village she knew she needed to raise her young family...and so she set out to build one herself, from scratch.

The idea started as a simple podcast and she called it Motherland.

Turns out, Stephanie wasn't alone.  The demand for the Motherland style network, support and connected conversations quickly exploded as thousands of rural and remote mums from all over Australia opted into her community and the business quickly evolved and grew.

Stephanie's honest story, the business' swift organic growth and her clever communication skills were the ultimate triple threat. Steph managed to get her business air-time across a plethora of the country's top media organisations in print, radio and TV.

As a much needed service, Motherland also caught the attention of the Australian Government which culminated in January this year when Stephanie was announced as 2024's Australian of the Year for Tasmania.

Motherland is now a registered national charity on a mission to reduce isolation, improve mental health and the well-being of rural mothers across the country.

I can't wait to share with you how she did it (by herself with two small kids in tow!).

  • Marina Go stands for everything I want to be when I grow up.

Intelligent, ambitious, a critical thinker, a clear communicator and 'oh so' calm.

She's the quintessential GO getter, unafraid of being out of her comfort zone, quietly confident, well-prepared and unflappable ...creating a career out of consistently putting her hand up for opportunities she wasn't sure she was cut out for, but she took them anyway (and nailed them).

Originally a magazine journalist, Go started out as a cadet at the Daily Mirror before putting herself forward for the role of the Editor of Dolly.

I know, I know, copy girl to editor, it's a stretch right?  But GO backed herself and while she didn't get the job initially, the successful candidate didn't last long and Marina was waiting in the wings.   She was appointed the Editor at Dolly magazine at 23.

The rest of her career kind of trajects the same way. Editor to executive to boardroom boss. One, after the other.

Fast forward 25 years and Marina has turned being on boards into a full-time job. She's battled the boardrooms of insanely intimidating male dominated industries like the NRL, where her first ever board seat at the Wests Tigers ended up with her being nominated as Chair on her first day.

The club was in turmoil at the time and male journalists annihilated her relentlessly in the press for attempting to challenge the status quo.  Marina didn't flinch.

These days it would take too long to list all the boards she's been on because we'd be here all day, but here's snapshot of the companies she's covered:

    🙌  PwC Diversity Advisory Board

    🙌  Super Netball Limited

🙌  The Walkley Foundation for Journalism

    🙌  Ovarian Cancer Australia

    🙌  Booktopia

    🙌  7 Eleven

More recently, Marina's current portfolio includes:

👩‍🎓 Independent Non Executive Chair of Adore Beauty

👩‍🎓 Independent Non Executive Director at Transurban
👩‍🎓 Non executive Director Energy Australia

👩‍🎓 Non executive Director at Autosports Group

👩‍🎓 Non executive Director at the Australian Institute of Company Directors

Are you exhausted yet? I am.   So I'm going to stop talking and let Marina do the rest...

This is an inspiring episode that left me thinking about our conversation for days and finally convinced me to apply for my first board role, after sitting on the idea for years.

    Enjoy x

  • I heard a really, profound quote about self-promotion from a fellow female founder on a business podcast I was listening to recently and I can't stop thinking about it and how strongly it resonates with me and what I do.

"Humility as a founder or business owner looks different. Humility doesn't mean hiding."

"It means I might look or feel like an idiot pitching this or trying that or, this might not work but I'm going to do it anyway because this mission is more important than my ego."

It's so true.  Everyone (including me) automatically assumes that when we talk about taking "risks" in our business, in either starting or scaling it that we're taking purely about financial risks.

But when it comes to personal brand, those risks are personal too.  It's risky to put yourself out there.  What if you fail, what if people don't like you?

But when you own and run a business....if you're not prepared to sell yourself, how can you expect anyone else to?

My guest on the podcast today is one of Australia's leading personal branding experts.

Carlii Lyon has spent the last 15 years shaping the personal reputations of remarkable individuals from across the globe.

As a former international personal publicist, her past clients include, world famous supermodel (Miranda Kerr), New York Times bestselling authors, inventors, musicians, and even a British celebrity foot reader!

Today, Carlii is dedicated to helping everyday individuals, executives and entrepreneurs discover the power of reputation by proactively shaping their professional identities, communicating their value, and becoming visible to the audiences that matter.

Recognised as a thought leader on the topic, Carlii has been invited to speak to the teams of Top 50 ASX Listed companies and iconic brands internationally; including the likes of Financial Times, Spotify, GPT Group, Gilbert + Tobin and L’Oréal to name a few.

She is a regular contributor to Forbes Australia on the topic of personal branding and has been featured in Smart Company, CEO Magazine, Sky News and The Sunday Telegraph.

    In this episode we discuss:

⭐️ What is a personal brand?

⭐️ How to know if you're ready to put your personal brand out there

⭐️ How to get over yourself and push past Imposter Syndrome

⭐️ The 5 C's of personal brand, clarity, consistency, content, connection and confidence

⭐️ Developing a plan to help you confidently achieve your personal branding goals

So stop waiting for someone else to magically start promoting you, and step out of the shadows and into the light of your own personal brand with Carlii Lyon.

    Enjoy x

  • In the online course world, there's lots of "coaches" spruiking lots of promises, but Leonie Dawson is the real deal.  And I know because she's an open book.   Leonie is, by her own admission, a wildly creative introvert who's the former editor of the Australian Government business website, business dot gov.au and now the CEO of her own namesake company, Leonie Dawson, that's signed up 50,000 subscribers to her database and turns over millions of dollars each year.

Leonie's also an international best selling author, multiple-award winning businesswoman and one of the OG bloggers when blogging first came onto the scene in the early 2000's.

Leonie swears often and calls her customers names like blossom and beautiful soul and she talks regularly about taboo subjects like ADHD, autism, money, mental health and mothering...you would think people would run from that 'in your face' honesty and discomfort.

But on the contrary Leonie's attraction is magnetic and her community cannot get enough of her.   I wanted to share Leonie's story because so many women I work with in business are afraid to be authentic, they're afraid to tell their warts and all stories, admit failure or be themselves - because they think that's NOT what their audience or customers want.

Leonie is not for everyone. But she's cool with that. Because the community she attracts are superfans and she's created a $14 million dollar business off their devotion and investment. Oh and she only works 10 hours a week.

Jess is no stranger to business, she started out at 22 establishing one of Australia's first Paint and Sip businesses before selling and moving into corporate communications and marketing.  She had her ambitions firmly set on becoming CEO.   But starting a young family changed her definition of success and she set out with new ideals in sight.

After a few false starts, in late November 2022, she received an email about a new kind of AI technology, Chat GPT. Fast forward almost a year and Jess is proud to be a trailblazer in this space.

  • She's back!! Veteran journalist, editor and media expert, Ali Izzo is in the house and on the poddy for the second time this year!!  And it's for good reason.

In today's episode of the podcast we're delving into the wonderful, and often mysterious world of Affiliate Marketing with Ali who know performance marketing like a pro having worked in women's magazines for the last 20 years.

Now first things first, if this is a whole new world to you, you're not alone, because Affiliate Marketing is not my wheelhouse either! But stay tuned because by episodes' end you're going to be halfway to expert status and you can complete your AM degree and start making a ton of cash with our special 90 minute Affiliate Marketing Masterclass with Ali later this month!

In case you're unsure, Affiliate Marketing is a performance marketing channel where brands pay for customer acquisition by partnering with influencers or affiliates who promote their products.
Building part of your business or personal brand based on an Affiliate Marketing program is also statistically more likely to get your product or service featured in media in areas like product reviews or recommendations? How? Because Journalists are incentivised to include affiliate links in their stories, as it brings in an extra revenue stream for the business and helps them meet their KPIs.

Affiliate marketing isn't just about making money; it's also about forging valuable partnerships, creating authentic content, and delivering value to your audience.   As a media professional with 20 years of experience working in women’s lifestyle titles and a special interest in fashion, beauty and health - there is no one better placed to take us behind the scenes of the Affiliate Marketing industry.

Ali has worked at ELLE, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s BAZAAR, JONES, Stellar and Body+Soul in hybrid roles, and also dipped her toes into the world of producing and hosting podcasts with Healthy-ish. She’s now the Head of Digital Strategy at Are Media, sitting across iconic titles like the Australian Women’s Weekly, Marie Claire, Gourmet Traveller, Home Beautiful and Who.

We'll delve into Ali's strategies, experiences, and the proven methods to make Affiliate Marketing work for your business and learn all about how small businesses and personal brands can create an additional revenue stream and make money while they sleep.

  • Anita Siek is not a TV producer, print journalist or magazine editor.  But she is in the business of words.  And she's really bloody good at it.

Words that encourage people to take action, to feel something, to do something, words that produce a specific outcome...Do you know how powerful a skill like that is?  To be able to guide someone to take action, to do what you want them to do based purely on the fact that your written copy told them to.  It's crazy!  And we all need this skill in our business, like, yesterday!

Anita Siek is a lawyer turned brand and copy strategist and CEO of Wordfetti, a strategic copywriting and brand strategy house helping brands that don't do normal, stand out and make more sales through psychology, design-thinking and words.

Outside of Wordfetti, Anita is also the co-founder of Lenny, a digital mortgage broking business, the host of Brandfetti - a leading Marketing podcast, a speaker and she runs a high-touch Mastermind to help businesses strategically and sustainably grow and scale through unconventional business strategies.

Some of Anita's clients include Australia's largest insurer group IAG, The Calile Hotel Group, TEDx, Lack of Color and more. Her work has been featured on Forbes, Mumbrella, SmartCompany and Thrive Global.   In short, in the world of words, Anita is a bit of a celebrity and as a former journalist and writer, I'm a word geek and super-fan so this one is a bit of a love fest.     But I promise, even if words aren't your thing or writing clever copy is the thing you loathe most in business, Anita's insight is for every. body. That's the ironic thing right, by the end of this episode her words will have convinced you that the words YOU choose to use in your business are a game changer in every way.  And they are.

  • Journalist and entrepreneur, Annabelle Hickson, is a very talented story teller and knows a bloody good yarn when she hears one.  So good, in fact, she started her own magazine, Galah in 2020 with precisely that mission: to share beautiful story telling about regional headlines that matter.

Formerly a city girl, Annabelle, started her career as a reporter for The Australian newspaper in the early 2000s, before she fell in love with a handsome farmer from the NSW border and her life took a completely different direction.

Annabelle now lives on Australia's second largest pecan orchard, a farm situated in far north west New South Wales sandwiched between the tiny towns of Tenterfield and Texas. Yes that's the Texas NSW. This is also Galah HQ.

As an outsider all she'd ever heard in the media was negativity about the bush, droughts, floods, rains and whingeing farmers. But her experience on the land was proving to be quite different, Everywhere she looked she saw smart, clever and resilient people who talked about opportunities instead of limitations.  Annabelle wanted to tell a different story and she knew most mainstream magazines were already battling diminishing budgets, staff cuts and quality issues.

Annabelle wanted to create a publication that assumed people in regional Australia were a smart and increasingly diverse lot, who cared about community and creativity and the environment, as well as profitability. And she wanted a publication that acted as a bridge between the city and country divide. And so Galah was born.

Annabelle has an incredible way with words, she's a gifted story-teller and can sniff out a paid ad, thinly veiled as a story pitch, from a mile away.

Join me as we talk about the importance of building trust in your brand before all else, how she created a 70,000 plus community from scratch and why great story-telling sells so well.

  • Dimity Brassil first recorded her mum’s life story in 2018. She was spurred into action following the death of both her father and sister in a relatively short period and it dawned on her one day that she would never hear their voices again.

So, Dimity decided to sit down with her mum, Anne, and capture her voice telling her story - before it was too late.

Dimity and Anne worked together to create A Lasting Tale. Little did they know they would create a movement empowering a generation of older Australians to share their life
stories with their own loved ones.

Five years on, A Lasting Tale has evolved into a professional interview service for people with a lifetime of stories to share.   The service has 40 professional journalists recording private audio life stories for families Australia-wide. They have recorded 1,500 humble yet heroic life stories of everyday people.

A Lasting Tale now has a free mobile app and works with retirement villages, palliative care providers, libraries and community organisations.

They also run specialist life story intergenerational programs in aged care.

Dimity is an alumni of the May Cohort of the Media Masters Academy and she has been kicking massive Media and PR Goals since she finished the course just a few months ago.

In Dimity's own words, she came into the course knowing she had to get comfortable with self-promotion (but it felt icky and unnatural), she wasn't getting the results her business needed to grow by Meta ads alone and she knew she needed to build massive trust and credibility in her brand before people would part with such a personal purchase and invest in her business to tell a loved ones story.

It's safe to say Dimity has done all that times 1000% and her business has exploded since finishing the course.

In the last month alone, Dimity and a Lasting Day have been featured in:

Womens Agenda  The Good Weekend (SMH, The Age, WA Today, Brisbane Times) Sunday Life (SMH, The Age, WA Today, Brisbane Times) 89 local online news services through Australian Community Media servicing regional, rural and remote Australia The Canberra  Times, The Newcastle Herald, The Illawarra Mercury (through ACM) The Land Starts at 60 online publication ABC Radio Upper Hunter ABC Radio Goulburn Murray ABC Radio Shepparton 2GB Sydney...and she's booked to do an interview on Sunday for ABC Radio Melbourne.

Completing the Media Masters Academy course created an incredible "Aha" moment in Dimity's business journey, where she realised she never had to self-promote again to grow her business and gain valuable brand awareness, because she learned how to get the media to do that for her.

    This is Dimity's story.
