  • In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak talks to Curt Covington, Senior Director of Managed Accounts at AgAmerica, who shares his extensive insights into the state of American agriculture. With over four decades of experience in agricultural banking and a rich background in teaching ag finance, Covington provided a comprehensive overview of the industry's current landscape and future challenges.

Covington's journey began in California's Central Valley, where his family farmed nut crops, vineyards, and cotton. He transitioned to agricultural banking in 1979, influenced by his father's advice on the critical role of bankers and landlords in farming. His career saw him hold significant positions at Rabobank, Bank of the West, and Farmer Mac. Currently, at AgAmerica, he leads the Client Success Group, helping clients achieve greater success through strategic lending and expertise.

Covington discusses the implications of the recently released State of American Agriculture report. One of the critical points was the decline in the number of U.S. farms, now below 2 million for the first time. This decline is not just a statistical concern but a pressing issue affecting the backbone of rural America. The reduction in family farms impacts funding for essential services like hospitals, schools, and emergency services in rural communities.

Several factors contribute to the 14% decline in U.S. farms and the 8% reduction in farmland since 1997. Urban encroachment and the graying of rural America play significant roles. Many farmers, with an average age between 58 and 64, lack successors to take over their operations. The high cost of farming, including soaring input costs and land prices, further exacerbates the issue.

Despite the decrease in the number of farms, the average farm size has increased by 7% since 2002. This trend towards larger farms brings both benefits and challenges. Larger operations can achieve greater efficiency, leveraging advanced technology and equipment to reduce costs. However, smaller farms struggle to keep up, especially given that farmers do not set commodity prices, leading to unpredictable profitability.

Succession planning remains a significant challenge for multi-generational farms. Only 23% of family farms have a succession plan in place. Covington highlighted the importance of strategic planning and decision-making in ensuring the continuity of farming operations. The reluctance of older generations to hand over control and the complexities of family dynamics often hinder effective succession planning.

Curt Covington's insight sheds light on the pressing issues facing American agriculture. He underscores the need for strategic planning, efficient resource management, and support for family farms to sustain the backbone of rural America.

  • In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak sits down with Mary Kay Thatcher, the Senior Manager of Federal Government and Industry Relations at Syngenta. Mary Kay shared her extensive insights on the pressing policy and trade concerns facing U.S. agribusiness today. With a remarkable career that spans over three decades, Thatcher's expertise and deep-rooted connection to agriculture make her a formidable voice in the industry.

Thatcher joined Syngenta’s Government Relations team in 2018, following a 31-year tenure as a lobbyist for the American Farm Bureau Federation. During her time at the Farm Bureau, she was instrumental in lobbying on issues related to farm programs, crop insurance, conservation, and credit. She also led the organization's efforts in addressing farm data security and privacy, serving as President of the Ag Data Transparency Evaluator and Secretary of the Ag Data Coalition.

Her career began as a legislative assistant for agriculture and trade to Senator Roger Jepsen of Iowa, shortly after graduating from Iowa State University with degrees in animal science and agricultural economics. Thatcher also served in the first Bush Administration as the director of congressional and public affairs at the Farm Credit Administration, further solidifying her expertise in agricultural policy.

A fifth-generation Iowa farmer, Thatcher’s deep understanding of farming is not just professional but personal. She grew up on a 500-acre farm and currently manages a farm in Iowa that produces corn and soybeans, alongside a cow/calf operation. This unique blend of practical farming experience and high-level policy work gives her a comprehensive perspective on the challenges and opportunities in agribusiness.

Thatcher talks about her upcoming presentation at the Women in Agribusiness (WIA) Summit in Denver, Colorado, where she will speak on "Key Policy and Trade Concerns for U.S. Agribusiness." The WIA Summit, which debuted in September 2012, has grown into a premier event for women in the sector, providing a dynamic networking and knowledge-sharing forum. The Summit's focus on fostering positive and productive environments for professional women across agribusiness and food sectors has made it a vital event for industry leaders.

  • In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak talks to Camille Grade, the Chief Market Officer at Bushel, shared her invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of agricultural technology and data management. As a key speaker at this year's Women in Agribusiness (WIA) Summit, Camille’s expertise and experience are highly anticipated by attendees eager to understand the intricacies of the "messy middle" of the supply chain.

Camille's journey with Bushel began over a decade ago when she played a pivotal role in transitioning the company from a digital consulting agency to a leading digital product platform focused on the agriculture industry. Since its launch in 2017, Bushel has rapidly grown, now powering over 3,500 grain and ag retail facilities across the U.S. and Canada, representing more than 50% of grain origination in these countries. This remarkable growth has made Bushel one of the largest technology networks in U.S. agribusiness.

During the interview, Camille highlighted the significance of the "messy middle" in the supply chain. While much focus has been on on-farm activities, there is a growing need to invest and innovate in this crucial part of the supply chain. Camille emphasized that efficient data collection, standardization, and organization are vital to maximizing productivity, mitigating risks, and driving profitability across agribusiness value chains. Bushel partners with its agribusiness partners to drive technology adoption among farmers, ensuring that they have the necessary tools and support to integrate new solutions into their operations effectively.

Camille's role in shaping Bushel's brand has been instrumental in its success. She shared her approach to creating a brand that resonates with authenticity in the agriculture sector. By using imagery and words that genuinely reflect the values and realities of farming communities, Bushel has built a strong and trustworthy brand that resonates with its audience.

A highlight of Bushel's efforts to connect with its customers is the annual Bushel Buddy Seat Conference. Camille explained that the name "Buddy Seat" reflects the conference’s goal of fostering close, collaborative relationships with agribusinesses such as ag retailers, grain elevators, full-service cooperatives, and ag lenders. The conference aims to provide valuable insights, share best practices, and strengthen the sense of community among its participants.

Camille Grade’s insights into the future of agricultural data and technology highlight the importance of innovation, collaboration, and authenticity in driving the industry forward. Her contributions to Bushel have not only transformed the company but have also made a significant impact on the broader agribusiness community. As she continues to lead Bushel in its mission to empower farmers and agribusinesses with cutting-edge technology, her influence on the industry is sure to grow.

  • In this week's North American Ag Spotlight Chrissy Wozniak dives deep into the world of flue-cured tobacco production with a true expert in the field, Dr. J Michael Moore, of the University of Georgia Tobacco Team. J Michael has dedicated his career to developing and implementing educational programs that guide farmers in producing high-quality tobacco. He collaborates closely with county Extension agents, researchers, and various agribusiness groups to deliver research-based recommendations, ensuring that Georgia farmers have the most up-to-date information at their fingertips. He coordinates a team of specialists, providing crucial knowledge on everything from production and harvesting to curing and marketing tobacco. He's the driving force behind the University of Georgia Tobacco Team and the visionary leader of the Georgia-Florida Tobacco Tour, which showcases the latest advancements in tobacco farming.

The Southeastern United States has a rich history rooted in agriculture, with tobacco playing a pivotal role in the region's economic and cultural landscape. The industry, particularly flue-cured tobacco, has seen significant advancements through the years, driven by dedicated professionals and innovative research. Flue-cured tobacco, primarily grown in Georgia and Florida, is known for its high quality and distinct curing process. The leaves are harvested and then cured using heat in a controlled environment, which helps develop the tobacco's characteristic flavor and aroma. This type of tobacco is commonly used in cigarette production, making it a crucial crop for the region's farmers.

Dr. Moore's role involves developing and implementing educational programs focused on producing and managing flue-cured tobacco. By working closely with county Extension agents, researchers, and agribusiness groups, Dr. Moore ensures that farmers receive sound, research-based recommendations. These recommendations cover various aspects of tobacco production, from planting and growing to harvesting and curing.

    The Georgia-Florida Tobacco Tour
One of the most notable initiatives led by Dr. Moore is the annual Georgia-Florida Tobacco Tour. This event showcases the latest research and advancements in tobacco farming, offering growers a firsthand look at new varieties and cultivation techniques. The 2024 tour includes multiple demonstration locations featuring thirteen released varieties grown in Georgia and Florida, as well as research test locations evaluating eleven varieties for black shank resistance. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see the evaluation of a new Orondis premix formulation, applied in transplant water for black shank control and phytotoxicity.

Throughout the growing season, farmers must manage pests and diseases, which can significantly impact yield and quality. Regular monitoring and the use of recommended agricultural practices help mitigate these risks. As the plants mature, the leaves are harvested in stages, starting from the bottom and moving upwards.

The tobacco growing industry in the Southeast continues to thrive, thanks to the dedication and expertise of professionals like Dr. J Michael Moore. Through educational programs, research, and community initiatives, the industry is not only preserving its rich heritage but also embracing innovation to meet the challenges of modern agriculture. As farmers adopt new practices and technologies, the future of flue-cured tobacco in the region looks promising.

  • This week's North American Ag Spotlight is a little different, last week I attended the 2024 American Agri-women Fly-In in Washington DC. Among the many speakers we heard there was one extraordinarily excellent presentation by University of Delaware Professor Emeritus David R. Legates, Ph.D., C.C.M. His content is thought provoking and important as it flies against the grain of current ideology.

From the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation. David R. Legates presentation was titled, 'How will Climate Change Affect Agriculture?' he did a deep dive into real climate data and how environmental extremism is causing problems for the American farmer and overall global food security. Legates has testified three times as an expert witness before the US Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works and before both Pennsylvania House and Senate Committee meetings on climate change. He participated in the historic joint USA-USSR protocol for the exchange of climate information in 1990, won the 2002 Boeing Autometric Award for the Best Paper in Image Analysis and Interpretation by the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, won First Place in the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and ESRI Paper Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and was awarded the Courage in Defense of Science Award in 2015.
