This is the last episode of Women on the Road, but by no means the end of our community. In fact, we are incredibly excited and honored that Noami Grevemberg and her team at Diversify Vanlife will be helping to evolve the podcast you hear on this channel moving forward, with a total reboot taking place in October under a new name, Nomads at the Intersections. In this finale episode, Noami and Laura talk about what this transition means to them, as well as how we hope to see you take part in where we’re going next.

For some of us, what got us in the car in the first place are the things we’re running from-- but no matter how many miles we drive, those things end up in the passenger seat, along for the ride with us. Kathy Karlo, a climber, writer, Director of No Man’s Land Film Festival, and host and creator of the For the Love of Climbing podcast, is someone who knows the contents of her passenger seat well-- both literally and figuratively. And she uses the weight of what she carries to build something bigger than herself.

This platform as you know it started several years ago in response to the lack of representation of female road travelers in the media we consume. After over 100 written interviews published online, followed by more than 100 episodes of the WOTR podcast and the growth of this tight-knit online community, we know there are still more conversations to be had.
But we also feel, more strongly than ever, that in the spirit of what WOTR has aimed to do-- broaden our perception of who is on the road, and elevate those voices and stories-- that our current team at @ravel.media are not the ones who need to be hosting these conversations moving forward. That’s why we’re making some big changes.
Thanks to Diversify Vanlife, we are partnering to evolve this platform so that it can further serve the conversations that aren’t being had enough, led by the people we need to hear from most.
Starting in October, Diversify Vanlife will replace the WOTR podcast under the name Nomads at the Intersections. This monthly show, hosted by founder Noami Grevemberg and co-host Anaïs Monique, will shift the narrative and navigate the challenges, journeys and inspirations of the modern nomadic movement while diving deep into the stories of underrepresented voices.
If you’re already subscribed to WOTR on your favorite podcast app, you’ll automatically start getting Nomads at the Intersections content as the re-launch approaches. We’ll also drop some exciting updates right here as well as via Instagram @diversify.vanlife, so just sit tight, make sure you’re following along, and we’ll keep you updated.
WOTR as the show you know it now with host Laura Borichevsky will be on air until Friday, 9/18. You’ll still be able to listen to past episodes after this date on the same podcast feed. We have some special things planned for our final two episodes so we’re hoping you tune in!
Thanks to each of you for being here for what this community has grown into, and we’re excited to have you here to see where we can all go together next.

Whether on or off the road, it can be easy to tell yourself you can’t do new things. That you’re too inexperienced. That you don’t have the skills. That you’re not qualified.
If that’s been you, then this episode is just what you need to hear. Because Laura Edmondson-- a road traveler, digital creator, educator, podcast host, athlete, and DEI and Sustainability consultant-- has got a lot to say about moving forward in the face of feeling unqualified and showing yourself that it’s possible.

Nobody ever said living on the road was easy, but it definitely teaches us life lessons. In this episode, van dweller Anna Tedesco shares what she's learned from over two years of solo road travel, how it's helped her navigate the mental and emotional challenges a pandemic can bring about, and the important role cooking good food plays in all of it. Whether you need some accessible outdoor cooking recipes or a solid reflection on the life lessons the road can teach us, this episode is for you.

For many reasons, many of us have been traveling less and reading more right now, which is why hearing from mother, outdoor adventurer, Licensed Nursing Assistant, and book reviewer Alessandra Hurt is especially important right now. Because what we can learn from stillness, BIPOC authors, accessible travel, and Alessandra’s insights on motherhood are all lessons we can use to make our world a better place.

As a queer couple, Natasha Seitz and Beth Luby challenge the notion we hear often online from white, straight couples: that the road always feels safe and strangers always seem welcoming. Because the reality is that safety also equates to privilege, and it shows up in the ways you camp, where you travel to, and what you do when you get there. In this episode, we get to know Natasha and Beth and dig into the safety considerations they make often while traveling, how intersectionality comes into play, and how your gut and your head sometimes tell two different stories about what’s really going on.

We didn't ask, but we bet if we had, traveler Denise Meeker would say that coming home to yourself isn't a one-time act. It's personal, on-going, and sometimes shows up in ways you don't expect. It also can include hard, internal work. But we're really thankful to get to hear her story of coming home through spending time on the road and in the outdoors to underline the importance of you telling yours.

As we all know, a lot can change in a couple of years: especially when you’re a mom, and especially when you live on the road. The truth is this: as white women on the road, we’ve taken up a lot of space within the #vanlife movement. And it’s long past time to unpack how white women’s presence in popular road travel negatively impacts the Black traveler community. So in this episode, we spend some dedicated time addressing topics related to antiracism within the modern van life movement, why it’s been so tough to see positive change in this community, white women travelers’ collective role in all of this, and how to develop the practice of lifelong learning when it comes to antiracism work.
NOTE: We wanted to recognize that, in addition to the update at the top of this episode we recorded to address some community feedback regarding the topic of assimilation, we also want to call out thanks to another incredible community member that when we discuss classism (vehicle and event ticket affordability being two examples) in this episode alongside racism, we are perpetuating the limiting and harmful narrative that folks in BIPOC communities are in lower socioeconomic brackets. Furthermore, this action is an example of a microaggression, and something we apologize for and take seriously. We are linking an additional resource here to underline why linking classism and racism is problematic so you can continue to learn alongside us. To our listeners: please listen critically.

Road travel can take many forms. And Alexandra Keeling knows this better than most-- because she's done a lot of them. From RV life, to towing a small trailer, to sleeping out of the back of a car, Alex's journeys on the road so far have shown that no matter how you travel, it all counts. Because regardless of your travel style or what you're hitting the road with, everyone is susceptible to unexpected surprises and challenges. Alex knows this part better than most, too-- but that’s her story to tell in this episode.

Can we hit the road responsibly during a pandemic? As someone planning to car camp or take a drive into the wilderness, you might not feel like you alone could make a huge impact on this pandemic-- but the reality is that travel can lead to transmission-- which means that travelers have the capacity to create an immense effect on the trajectory of viral spread.
The good news is that we’re not here to make you feel guilty. We know you want to travel (we do too!), but more importantly: we want you to be knowledgeable and prepared, whether you’re planning to get out there soon, or hoping to sometime later in 2020. In this episode, we’re aiming to help in that process by providing you with questions, tips, and tools to make your own, best decisions at the time. We look at information through the eyes of women who love to travel and also hold public health as a top priority: Seattle-based nurse and overlander Emily Scott, travel nurse Em Cheng, and founder of the Outdoor Advocacy Project, Katie Boué.
So tune in and get ready to be honest with yourself when it comes to responsible travel. Because the safer we are collectively, the more we can actually go out and do.

Skyler Thomas is good at working with a change of plans. In fact, it’s something that she’s navigated time and time again-- right up to present day as she pivoted the direction of her business, SugarSky, amid pandemic-related public health concerns. But whether it’s founding her company, embracing tiny house living to become debt-free, changing careers, or making tough calls in business and in life, Skyler has a way of focusing on what’s possible-- which is the kind of attitude we’re all looking for a little more right now.

This episode honors the mom figures in our lives who inspire or encourage dreams of road travel by paying tribute to one mom in particular: our host Laura Borichevsky’s mom, Jackie Hughes. Before #vanlife… before Instagram… before she could even drive: Laura’s belief in her ability to do road travel was shaped by her mom’s experience driving across the country when she was in her early twenties, and it stuck with her because Jackie’s journey was full of purpose, bravery, and quite a bit of fun packed into a handful of days and a tiny 1975 Camaro.

In this episode, we asked you to share your favorite road travel stories. The landscapes, destinations, trials, and motivations, like this community, are wide-ranging-- from reminders of your own strength and resilience, to particularly sweet memories with loved ones, to formative times you’re holding onto now more than ever. In listening to these stories, we hope you feel a little closer to the road. Because it’s still out there, waiting for us. And these memories are a reminder of what might be around the corner when we’re able to get back out there again.

Britany Freeman’s had a problem for a few years. She wanted this one van. And not just one kind of van. But this one van, which she named Alice years before it was even hers. Alice has slipped through Britany’s fingers more than a couple times, and through it all, she could easily have given up. But what makes this story good news is that she didn’t. And what makes it great news is that as of a couple weeks ago, that van is now sitting in her driveway, undergoing a lot of TLC and DIY renovation projects.

Becca Foss, long-term road traveler and outdoor guide, knows firsthand through the loss of her husband that sometimes you just have to find ways to push yourself through. It might be climbing a steep hill on a loaded up bike, sending a rock wall, or facing unexpected tragedy and learning how to meet it head on. Being strong doesn’t always look like pushing past your limits. Sometimes it simply looks like showing up regularly and sticking it out. Because when we keep pushing through, even just a little bit at a time-- eventually we do reach the other side.
