"Has anyone ever explained pain to you?" Rachel Zoffness, PhD, always asks her patients this one question in order to bridge the gap between her patient's understanding of their own pain and what other health care providers have told them about their pain.
On today's episode of Pain Reframed, Dr. Zoffness joins Tim Flynn, PT, PHD, OCS, FAAOMPT, and Jeff Moore, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, to discuss her new workbooks that she created to help bridge that education gap that patients have of their understanding of what their pain is telling them about their bodies. Dr. Zoffness wrote these workbooks for her own practice as a psychologist treating adolescents and young adults and is now ready to share this incredible resource with other providers.

On this week's episode of Pain Reframed, David Clawson, MD, joins Tim and Jeff to discuss holistically approaching neck and back pain and spinal deformity, breaking down how Dr. Clawson has used that approach his field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Clawson categorizes the threats that patients are up against -physical and mental, then dives into the review of systems to inform and determine his plan of care. Dr. Clawson also discusses in depth how to transition from the physical evaluation to the mental or spiritual evaluation that plays such a large part of pain.

On this week's episode Liz and Jeff speak with Dr. Kirsty Bannister, a renowned researcher on conditioned pain modulation, about what we know, what we’re studying, and what we can look forward to in the future of this topic.
Kirsty completed BSc, MRes and PhD degrees at University College London and and Imperial College before returning to UCL for a decade-long postdoctoral research position in the laboratory of Professor Anthony Dickenson. In 2017 Kirsty gained her faculty position upon joining King’s College London where she now runs her research group investigating the central modulation of pain. Specifically Kirsty's research team bridges the gap between bench and bedside pain research by conducting exploratory experiments that seek to molecularly, anatomically and/or functionally define descending control pathways in rodent and man using electrophysiology and human psychophysics respectively. Kirsty has led multiple symposia at world pain congresses including IASP and EFIC and she also performs Section Editor duties for multiple pain-related journals.Links:

In this episode, Liz and Jeff talk to Laura Seago, co-founder and Head of Content at Curable, about using the mind-body connection to treat pain. Laura focuses on creating virtual, neuroscience-based recovery programs for chronic pain. Her passion for creating these programs stems from her personal experience of recovery from migraines, sciatica, and chronic knee pain. She is an alumna of BuzzFeed and Google, both of which helped her to develop the digital storytelling skills Curable uses to engage chronic pain sufferers with bite-sized audio lessons and easy-to-use techniques.

Liz and Jeff chat with Dr. Leonard Van Gelder, DPT, CSCS, TPS, CSMT about relational frame theory, the most empirically-studied theory of human language and cognition and how this relates to the psychological flexibility of patients' ability to incorporate new concepts into their existing stories, and prognosis for recovery.
Leonard Van Gelder has been involved in the movement and rehabilitation field for over 15 years. During this time, he has studied, published research, and presented at regional and international conferences on the science of stretching, strength and conditioning, and therapeutic pain science interventions. He has explored a diverse spectrum of manual therapy and movement approaches, and emphasizes a biopsychosocial approach to manual therapy, movement, and education in his practice. He owns and practices clinically at Dynamic Movement and Recovery (DMR) in Grand Rapids, MI.

In this episode, Liz and Jeff chat with Walt Fritz. Walt has been a physical therapist since 1985 and has integrated manual therapy into that model ever since 1992. He trained with many traditional tissue-based instructors, including myofascial release and craniosacral therapy, but became dissatisfied with the narratives used to describe the work and effects and began to move into a more biologically plausible explanation. While continuing to use a hands-on approach that visibly resembles those earlier models, he has neutralized the implied message by now referring to the work he uses and teaches as "manual therapy." Building on concepts firmly grounded in the biopsychosocial model, as well as the possibly undervalued third leg of the evidence-based practice model (patient preferences and values), his model of intervention and professional education stresses a patient-led experience. He believes that manual therapy need not be a passive modality, one that fosters patient dependency, but a subset of therapeutic intervention that reduces fear of movement and encourages self-efficacy, one well-grounded in evidence-based practice.

Dr. Justin Dunaway joins Pain Reframed this week! Justin has extensive experience in outpatient orthopedics, not only in the United States, but also in Haiti. Justin and his wife, Dr. Morgan Denny, founded and run the organization STAND Haiti. The STAND Haiti Project establishes permanent access to orthopedic rehabilitative services in the country of Haiti through direct patient care and clinical training of its citizens.
Through STAND Haiti, Justin and his team go to Haiti multiple times a year to see patients who have a significantly different relationship with healthcare and different level of resources and education than in the United States. Interestingly, the difference of access to resources and education brings up some fascinating discussion. Jeff, Justin, and Tim share their thoughts on these differences and how having a “blank slate” in treatment and care can actually be beneficial.
Justin shares his experience in going through the Therapeutic Pain Specialist Certification program and how it helped him and changed the way he manages pain. The certification was instrumental in teaching Justin ways to take the ideas on pain management and apply it in a framework that works for him and his patients.

Sleep is SO important. Sure, the topic has been batted around on Pain Reframed, but do we really know and believe that sleep is essential? Today, we’ll be chatting with Dr. Katie Siengsukon about sleep, as well as screening and sleep hygiene tactics that you need as a clinician and also that you need as a patient.
Dr. Siengsukon provides instruction in neuroscience, neurorehabilitation, and sleep health promotion in the physical therapy and rehabilitation science graduate programs. She is currently the director of the Sleep, Health, and Wellness Laboratory and conducts research to better understand how sleep impacts function, learning, and overall health particularly with aging and in those with neurological conditions.

We have Dr. Jessie Podolak joining us this week to share her story and journey as a physical therapist working with patients who have chronic pain. Jessie shares a wealth of, not only knowledge and great tips, but incredible wisdom that is absolutely helpful to, not only your professional pursuit, but also your personal life.
Jessie talks quite a bit about the need for PT’s to have self-care. Take care of yourself in order to take care of others. Additionally, rather than saying “soft skills” in relation to compassion, empathy, listening, mentorship, etc., say they are “higher order skills.” This is HUGELY important and something, we’ve found, that patients really do, deep down, want.

In this episode of Pain Reframed, hosts Tim Flynn and Jeff Moore are joined by Dr. Britt Smith, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, a physical therapist and private clinic owner, to discuss the importance of taking a historical perspective during challenging times.
Dr. Smith has spent his life studying history and the humanities and bringing that mindset into the care of his patients and into the care of society. His research focuses on back pain through a historical perspective and this discussion centers on President John F. Kennedy’s struggles with chronic back pain.

Dr. Marc Ringel joins us on Pain Reframed to discuss the humanistic perspective on healthcare. Dr. Ringel has served in so many different aspects of the healthcare profession, but his perspective on the humanistic side is very powerful. This week, Marc, Jeff, and Tim will be talking about what it is to be human and how to deliver kind care. The power of touch and face-to-face communication can’t be replaced with technology, no matter how helpful technology is for us.
Also, as a philosophy major, Dr. Ringel became interested in the history of science and in the "mind-body problem." For most of his career Dr. Ringel has written, spoken, and consulted on issues related to medical informatics and telemedicine.
