Have you seen or had acorn squash before? These squashes look like huge acorns with their round plump globular shapes and even grooved ridges. They are often sold in bins at the grocery store with a dark green appearance, though they may appear in other colors, such as orange and white! If youâre new to the plant-based world, chances are you may not have had a chance yet to cook with this less known squash in your kitchen, or know much about it. It may even be one of those squashes that you have pushed your shopping cart by at the store and never even considered buying.
Thatâs why I want to spotlight acorn squash in todayâs episode. They are a hidden gem in the squash world and many people donât know just how nutritious they areâŠmuch less how to eat them. So, if youâre curious to find out more about this fall plant-based ingredient, listen in!

That would be an amazing change, wouldnât it? Thatâs what my guest Winnona experienced after moving to a plant-based diet. Prior to this dietary change, she had been dealing with a whole host of other health problems as well, including a skin condition called hidradenitis suppurativa, as well as high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.

Even if you donât have a cowâs milk food allergy, itâs hard to miss the fact that many commercially processed food products sold contain cowâs milk-based ingredients in them. Thatâs because dairy is commonly used by manufacturers to make many of their food products more appealing and taste better. Just think of butter cookies, milk chocolate bars, mac and cheese box kits, hot chocolate drink mixes, and goldfish crackers. Sometimes it seems like milk is used in nearly everything!
But when youâre trying to move into a full plant-based diet lifestyle or a vegan diet, navigating the commercial foods landscape can get tricky. Thatâs why I want to help. In this episode, Iâll show you how to easily spot common dairy-based ingredient terms on product packages with real-life examples. Letâs save you precious time and energy when grocery shopping, so you can move smoother and faster into a plant-powered lifestyle. Ready? Letâs dive in!

Thereâs a common concern I see among those wanting to start a plant-based diet lifestyle. And itâs this. Itâs a fear that eating this way will cause them to seriously lack key nutrients, because theyâre taking out meats, dairy, eggs and other animal-based foods from their meals. Do you have this fear too?
If so, iron might be one of those nutrients you are especially worried about when making this big lifestyle shift. Since meats are a source of iron, itâs natural then to be wondering, âWill eating plant-based make me end up with nutrient deficiencies and get health problems like iron deficiency anemia?â
Letâs talk about it. In this episode, weâll look at the importance of iron for our bodies, how common iron deficiency anemia really is, and what the recent research is showing. That way, we can better answer this question. Iâll meet you on the inside!

Walk into any grocery store, and itâs natural to assume that most of the products being sold on shelves around us would be free from animal-based ingredients â such as cookies, soups, canned beans, noodles and breads. These are not in the refrigerated meats section and donât seem to be made with fish, beef, pork, or poultry, so theyâre obviously vegan or 100% plant-based, right?
Wrong. Manufacturers can turn animal-based fats and proteins into many forms, so many commercially processed food products can contain animal-derived ingredients. And itâs often without us realizing it, UNLESS we know where and what to look for.
Thatâs why I wanted to do this episode. Iâll give you top tips thatâll help you spot meat and fish-based ingredients used in commercial food products more quickly. Youâll then be able to make smarter shopping decisions and move with more confidence towards a plant-powered lifestyle. Are you ready to do this? Then letâs jump in!

Whatâs it like to have an autoimmune disease, resulting in borderline kidney failure and be on the verge of needing a kidney transplant? It must have been really scary to deal with. Thatâs what todayâs guest Rhonda faced. She had just been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called IgA nephropathy which significantly impairs kidney function, and in her acute hospitalization, it was found that her Glomerular Filtration Rate (GRF) had already dropped to the super low level of 12. She was about to be put on the transplant list, but she wasnât even 50 years old yet and still had a full life ahead of her, not to mention another grandchild on the way to love.
Yet, following the advice of her kidney doctor, she decided to give plant-based eating a tryâŠand what results she experienced within just 6 months of making this change! Hear about the health transformation Rhonda experienced in part 1 of this Guest Interview. Not only did her kidney function improve naturally, her HbA1c dropped drastically from 8.2 to 5.4, her mental health got better and she went way down in pills. Listen in to learn more of Rhondaâs story and be inspired!
