After a failed Hawaiian music scouting mission involving a fabulous live performance - but no CDs to take home! - by John Mahi, Barry purchased this album at Aloha Got Soul, a Honolulu-based record label championing new music and rare reissues from Hawaii! While there, he also purchased Lead Me to the Garden by ʻĀina, From These Shores (various artists), Lemuria by Lemuria, and BLUE by Dae Hon.
We previously reviewed Maui Brewing Co. in Kihei, Hawaii, in our episode Hi (Peter Gabriel & Maui Brewing Co.).

Abigail first saw Hannibal Buress’ comedy on @midnight, a comedy panel game show that focused on the Internet’s reactions to current events. Barry correctly recalled that a viral joke from one of Buress’ comedy sets started the chain of events that eventually led to Bill Cosby’s downfall. Read more about that story and listen to Buress’ reaction to the events.

Barry and Abigail discuss Drag by k.d. lang and sample Theoretical Jam, Maduro Brown Ale, and Fancy Papers™ from Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, Florida.
Listen to the original versions of the songs that k.d. lang covered on this album!
Barry compared the ominous-sounding outro of Don’t Smoke In Bed to Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey.
We played a bit of The Hollies’ version (in Barry’s eyes, the definitive version) of The Air That I Breathe.
We discussed in depth the lyrics of Steve Miller Band’s The Joker, eventually going on a tangent that led to Clap For the Wolfman by The Guess Who and The Letter by The Medallions.
Abigail compared k.d. lang’s vocal performance in Your Smoke Screen to Shana Cleveland’s performance on Manzanita. Barry compared the song to Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd.
Congratulations to Jeff “Jafo” Shettler! At time of episode release, his bonus episode, Bonus: Pink Floyd Leftovers (Pink Floyd and brewLAB Leftovers) is our most listened-to episode of all time.
We discussed the incredible backstory of Till the Heart Caves In, which is a “cover” of a Roy Orbison song that was never recorded. lang and Orbison had a previous connection as lang performed in Roy Orbison & Friends - A Black and White Night in 1988. Read more about the special!
We believe that Jane Siberry wrote Hain’t It Funny specifically for k.d. lang. On Siberry’s album, “Hain’t It Funny” is preceded by k.d. lang, a series of recorded voicemails between Siberry and lang.

Abigail's only knowledge of The Pretenders prior to reviewing this album was their Christmas song 2000 Miles.
Other woman-led punk rock bands of this era mentioned were Pat Benatar, Heart, and Blondie.

Barry and Abigail and special guests Matty and Maddie Carlson discuss Manzanita by Shana Cleveland and sample La Playita and El Farito from The Tank Brewing Co. in Miami, Florida.
With this appearance, Matt, who literally just founded our five-timers’ club, is the inaugural member of our six-timers’ club. Barry called him the Larry "Bud" Melman of Pops on Hops.
This episode came out of Matt’s interview of Maddie on her favorite albums of 2023. He also interviewed fellow Substacker Kevin Alexander on the same topic.
Shana Cleveland is also in the surf rock band La Luz, who just released a new album! Watch Shana’s live performance in the KEXP studio.
Matt educated us on the Mellotron!
Abigail and Barry both entered Light on the Water into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music: Abigail with a comparison to Baby Genius by Eels, and Barry with a comparison to Rain by Hans Zimmer.
Abigail shouted out Hoplark, which brews nonalcoholic hop teas!
Maddie used Gold Tower to talk about her interest in tarot. Read more about the tower card!
Matt compared Ten Hour Drive Through West Coast Disaster to 9th & Hennepin by Tom Waits.
Though we didn’t discuss it in this recording, Matt is one of the most prolific men we know. He is a member of Harborcoat, The Stick Arounds, and The Pantones, in addition to touring as a solo act. In fact, Matty is probably coming to a city near you! Check out his tour dates! Abigail helped to host one of his house shows last summer, and it was an incredible evening. Barry and Abigail discuss A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out by Panic! At the Disco and sample Studio 54 Blues Blueberry NEIPA, Disco Sally’s Cookies, and Night Fever Porter from Disco Witch Brewing in Yulee, Florida.
Barry heavily compared this album (for better or for worse) to The Same Old Blood Rush with a New Touch by Cute Is What We Aim For, which we discussed in Yeast is What They Brew With (Cute is What We Aim For and Yeasty Brews Artisanal Beers).
We contrasted the Disco Witch’s succinct beer descriptions with the lengthy ones of Burial and Petty Thieves.
Camisado is the name of a military technique: a surprise attack occurring at night, or at daybreak, when the enemy is supposed to be asleep. Read more!
Barry entered the final note of Intermission into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison not to The Green Bee, nor to Flight of the Bumblebee, but to A Day In the Life by The Beatles.
Barry gave Abigail a quick lesson on the baroque period.
We learned all about Candi Syrup, Inc.!
Barry compared But It’s Better If You Do thematically to Risque by Cute Is What We Aim For.
Although our previous Beatles reference is not from The White Album, Abigail did organically bring up Savoy Truffle (it has been zero episodes since our last White Album reference!).
Barry compared There’s a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven’t Thought of It Yet to this scene from Young Frankenstein. Also, The lacing of the smokes reminded Barry of the spiking of the eggnog (and the vocalization and the harmonies!) in Who Spiked the Eggnog? by Straight No Chaser.
Barry’s second entry into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music was to compare Build God, Then We’ll Talk to My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music.

Barry, Abigail, and special guest Lory Willard (who previously joined us for POH [Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Appalachian Beer Tour]) sample Moscow mule cocktails made with Original, Hibiscus Lavender, and Cranberry Herb from Ginger’s Revenge in Asheville, North Carolina.
We have previously sampled several Ginger’s Revenge offerings in their pure forms on FrancePants (MuteMath and Ginger's Revenge), POH (Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Appalachian Beer Tour), and Malty Little Beers (Alanis Morissette and Leftover Beers).
Barry picked up his habit of eating an apple “from top to bottom” from the semi-autobiographical novel Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank Bunker Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey.
We took an opportunity to plug Dry Wrought Cider in Gainesville, Florida!
We also plugged the NC Pickle Festival in Mount Olive, North Carolina.
Lory is a fan of U Talkin’ U2 To Me?, the show that inspired us to start a podcast! We dove into an episode of “I Love Films” to discuss Lory’s dad appearing as an extra in The Lesser Evil, an early film in the Adam Scott canon. Watch Mr. Willard’s scene in the film!
Lory plugged Botanist and Barrel Cidery and Winery in Cedar Grove, North Carolina, which brews their ciders with foraged fruits.

In this BFE (beer-free episode), Barry, Abigail, and special guest Ian Rees (previously interviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod) discuss Ian’s Virtual Jukebox submission, Diorama by Silverchair.
Barry continually references Silverchair’s debut album Frogstomp (not also known as Frogstamp).
Abigail and Barry both compared the oeuvre of this album to that of Astoria by Marianas Trench, discussed on Cascadia (Marianas Trench and Cascade Brewing), and Electro-Shock Blues by Eels, discussed on Owlectro-Shock Brews [Eels and Dangerous Minds Brewing Co.).
Silverchair worked with composer Van Dyke Parks on this album. In a twist we could not have predicted, we discovered some relevant information about Parks after recording that did not come up in our conversation. Per Wikipedia, Parks wrote “‘City of Lights,’ ‘It's a “B” Movie,’ ‘Cutting Edge,’ and ‘Worthless,’ all of which were used in the film The Brave Little Toaster, directed by Jerry Rees.[citation needed].” Well, we’ll be the confirmatory citation - Jerry Rees is Ian’s dad! However, during the episode, we did discuss Parks’ work with The Beach Boys on their unfinished album Smile and his musically eclectic album Song Cycle.
Did you catch Barry’s weekly Coriolis force joke?
Barry compared the guitar sound in Angie by The Rolling Stones to that in World Upon Your Shoulders.
Abigail pointed out that had this not been a BFE, Green Bench would have been the perfect brewery to pair with Silverchair.
We discussed the trend of including a hidden track after a long silence on a CD (in reference to “Outro,” the hidden track after After All These Years). We referenced I Have Seen the Rain (feat. James T. Moore) by P!nk, Her Majesty by The Beatles, and Mercy, Sweet Moan by The Black Crowes as comparative examples. Reddit has also discussed this issue at length. Wikipedia maintains a list of albums containing a hidden track. After minimal research, we believe the mysterious album Ian referenced with multiple silent tracks was Sleepify by Vulfpeck.
We once again plugged Matty C’s multimedia project What Am I Making.
We closed by playing Ian’s new single, Say Goodbye. Watch the trippy music video! Say Goodbye is available for purchase on iTunes and Amazon.
Ian has an abundance of music available on Spotify and YouTube. We especially recommend Panic Induced Love (the album we reviewed on Bonus: Friendship Induced Pod), his Building A Song Series, and his Bo Burnham-inspired video “Why Do I Eat So Much Cheese?”.
Up next… A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out by Panic! At the Disco

Barry and Abigail discuss Twilight Time by Bennie Wallace and sample Time Stands Still, Twinger, Mangoes At Work, and They Call Me Baltastic from Hiatus Brewing Company in Ocala, Florida.
Barry has a personal connection to Bennie Wallace through his friend “Uncle” Steve Moore, whose Oscar-nominated animated short “Redux Riding Hood” features a score written by Bennie. Watch "Redux Riding Hood" or read Uncle Steve’s blog post about its production!
Many thanks to Lucas Frank, owner and brewer of Hiatus Brewing Company, for sitting down with us to talk about the history and the branding of the brewery!
Barry shared his other Los Angeles jazz experiences at Chadney’s, across the street from the NBC Studios. One memorable performance was by trombone player Matt Finders, who was part of Tonight Show with Jay Leno Band led by Kevin Eubanks.
Check out Barry’s playlist of the songs that were covered by Bennie Wallace on this album!
Abigail could not help but hear Silver Bells in The Tennessee Waltz.

Barry, Abigail, and special guest Nick Martino discuss Nick’s work with New York Funk Exchange and sample Exclamative Sour Series - Peachicot KISS! KISS! and Atomic Duck from Able Baker Brewing in Las Vegas, Nevada.
We were delighted to share the stage in Henderson, Nevada, with live recordings of six other podcasts: What Am I Making, Matt and Mattingly’s Ice Cream Social, Making Podcasts Great Again (on which Abigail appeared briefly; full episode on Patreon), Parenting is a Joke (on which Barry and Abigail were interviewed together, but the live episode has not yet been released), New Music for Olds (typically a written medium), and The Muckrake Political Podcast (full episode on Patreon).
Nick Martino previously appeared on Bonus: A Christmas Day's Eve! Original Songs by Our Friends from 2022 with his jazzy version of “The Christmas Song” featuring his wife Connie on vocals and his daughter Daphne on tambourine.
Our guest bartender was Matt Carlson of the What Am I Making multimedia empire. With this appearance, Matt is now the first member of our five-timers club!
Other members of New York Funk Exchange we specifically called out were vocalist Serena Fortier and rapper Cidida (who only appears on the hidden reprise of Without You after The Bailout Pt. 3 on the digital version of the album).
Tremendous thank you to Pete Dominick of the Stand Up! with Pete Dominick podcast for organizing the event, for inviting us to record live, and ultimately for creating the community that has supported our podcast so much over the years. Barry, Abigail, and surprise special guest Becky Richey discuss On My Own Two Feet by Granian and sample The One They Call Zoe and A Pale Mosaic from Hops & Grain Brewing (brewed by Austin Beerworks) in Austin, Texas.
Hops & Grain no longer has a taproom in Austin, but the two beers we sampled continue to be brewed by Austin Beerworks and are available at certain venues around Austin!
Garen Gueyikian (the songwriter, lyricist, vocalist, and primarily instrumentalist behind Granian) co-wrote BOOM BOOM with Teddi Gold, which has been used in multiple commercials, including in an Old Navy commercial from spring 2021.
Garen later formed Kill the Alarm. We played Kill the Alarm’s versions of Uncovered and Collide (compare to Granian’s versions of Uncovered and Collide).
Abigail entered On My Own into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison to Survivor by Destiny’s Child (secondarily, I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor).
Becky posed the question of our favorite song that employs the radio static effect. Barry entered Honey Pie by The Beatles (we have officially gone zero episodes without mentioning the White Album!).
Becky compared her love of Uncovered to her love of On the Way Down by Ryan Cabrera.
Becky shared this video of Garen performing My Voice and breaking his guitar.
