In Line By Line, I'm having a shakespearian actor or expert walk me through every line of the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare in an attempt to understand what's going on. The expert adds context and other tidbits to the dialogue and it's a super fun way to go through one of the longest lasting plays of all time.

This is mad, today I have the pleasure of hosting Ray O'Leary, probably the biggest comic I've got on the show so far! Ray and I yapped about the 2009 TV show Glee. I've always been fascinated by the dark and sordid drama surrounding such a positive and uplifting TV show from multiple deaths to the reveal that one of the cast members was a tyrant to work with. Ray talked about why this show was meaningful to him and of course there's a bit of comedy chat along the way. We are planning a proper deep dive into stand up, which will come out in a month or so but for now I thought it'd be fun to defy expectations and release a podcast about Glee with Ray.

Today I'm joined by Vasu Premkumar, one of my day 1's here in the Christhchurch comedy scene. We recorded this podcast real avant garde in a weekend Vasu was visiting Christchurch and we talked about why we enjoy the anime One Piece, who his favourite character is and why it's special to him before being very abruptly ended because I had to move my car and then go and pick up a bookshelf off facebook marketplace. Hope you enjoy it!

As I've gotten older I've found myself disliking the constant bombardment of social media feeds and enjoying signing up to the newsletters of people who's work I enjoy. I genuinely look forward to them each month.
Also, with the recent potential ban of TikTok it's reminded me that while social media platforms rise and fall like empires, having a good mailing list is rock-solid (like investing in the housing market).
Each month I'll be including stuff like upcoming gigs, episodes of the podcast that were released as well as audio snippets, one-liners I'm working on, comedy special reviews, media I've seen that I'd like to recommend, video games I'm playing, basically whatever's bringing me joy at the time.
So if you'd like to read along, give me a follow at taylorruddle.substack.com where once a month I'll post a new article with a voiceover option to listen to, it's basically a secret episode of the podcast! -

Today I'm joined by Kevin from Where The Weird Ones Are, a paranormal podcast based out of Maine. We went into this not really knowing what to expect as we had never spoken before but Kevin is a really cool guy with some very simple, wholesome tiny joys. We ended up getting a bit deep and talking about stuff like existentialism and the meaning of life, that sort of thing. I hope you like it!

Today I'm joined by Ben "Tito" Caldwell, one of my best mates in the NZ Comedy scene and we got talking about local politics, something that I don't understand a lot about but Ben is super into. We were driving home the night before and I asked Ben why the controversial 3 Waters initiative failed here in New Zealand and he gave me a really detailed but easy to understand answer. I asked him if he'd be keen to share that on the podcast and he was! We ended up having a real good chat about local politics, comedy and other bits and bobs along the way.

This week, comedian from Auckland and my good friend Bridie Thomson is back and we take a trip down memory lane talking about the series Kingdom Hearts, of which we are both fond. We talked about our first encounter with the series, how it influenced us growing up and what's to expect from the future of the franchise. This one is probably horribly confusing for anybody not familiar with the series so I won't hold it against you if you skip it!

I like to try and start each year with a Q&Tay, but I'm not at the level yet where people have many questions for me so I thought I'd do what we call in showbiz "a pivot" and start each year by bringing my old reliable buddy Henry HIckman onto the pod and discussing as many tiny Joys and Banes as we can get through in 40 minutes,
Joys:
Hitting the drive-thru after a social event.Chocolate bars after they’ve been refrigerated.Breaking the seal on a bowl of dip.Punching this one specific spot on my boxing bag that makes a great sound.Re-experiencing via the internet comics, movies, tv shows, video games etc that I wasn’t able to as a kid.Checking a packet of food / candy / mints and seeing that there’s still 50% or more left.Banes:
When a pedestrian crossing light changes too early and you have to run to make it over in time.Spam emails when you’re waiting for an important or stressful email to come in.When one of your body hairs snags on a tight fitting piece of clothing and it feels like you’re being stabbed by a tiny pin.Having to repeat myself when I feel like I very clearly and directly communicated something. When a company adds you to their mailing list after rejecting a job application you submitted.

The final episode of Hoss Town for 2024! The boys started this project up when they were a bit less busy but as things have picked up with comedy, it's been harder to nail the Dons down at the same time to record. In this episode of Hoss Town, the Fellas contemplate losing a subscriber, Taylor being mistaken for Matt, and then Matt being mistaken for Ron Mac, Taylor was heckled by another fat guy and blew his top. They yap about climbing trees, and Matt has a theory about hosses that appear in fairy tales. Taylor had his first experience at a proper barber. The lads end on a sombre note as Taylor's family cat passed away recently and both of Matt's have been dealing with various health issues. See you in 2025 for more Hoss Town!

Hoss Town is a monthly podcast by two big boys respectfully making some noise, stand up comedians Taylor Ruddle & Matt Lilley. The aforementioned Mayors of Hoss Town take a lighthearted look at masculinity in modern times - it's a journey of trying to find a balance between being Cavemen and Scholars with plenty of belly laughs along the way. -

In 2024 I attempted a creative project known as What Do We Reckon? Which was inspired by things such as Game Changer, 7 Days, Have You Been Paying Attention, Mock The Week and so on. We thought we could possibly create a similar format but make it more internet-y and less high budget and we were hoping that if the jokes were good enough, the lack of production value wouldn't matter to much. We created 10 weeks of episodes, usually dropping 3 videos a week and after 10 we decided to put it on ice to focus on other things, or possibly retool it and bring it back in the hopes it might get a bit more attention. The videos unfortunately never really connected and so I thought it'd be fun to talk about why we think the project didn't really take off, and I brought Geoff Wilson and Steven Lyons onto the show to do that, as they were both contributors to the project. Bear in mind this episode is very "inside baseball" so may not be for everyone!

This week I am joined by Emz or Emily of the Kowhai Fan Fest, happening here in Christchurch on the 18th of January 2025! Emz wears many hats for the fest, but her skills are predominantly in marketing, branding and comms. As we learnt over the course of this conversation she and I actually had a very similar career up until recently as she also studied Graphic Design and worked for many cool places, and lived in Japan for a bit. We talked a lot about what makes the Kowhai Fan Fest unique, what their ethos or kaupapa is and what people can expect from the 2025 fest. Emily's a really driven and lovely person, so I think you'll enjoy this one!

In this episode I'm joined by Dave Adams, a comedian and family man based here in Christchurch and we delved into some threads from Reddit's r/AmITheAsshole which has become a favourite pasttime of mine to read. We picked a couple of interesting threads to talk about and Dave shared some great wisdom about both. We also discussed the NZ culture of FIsh n' Chips and there was a bit of pro wrestling talk, as you can imagine. Dave was also tickled pink to learn that I own multiple replica swords.

Today I sat down with Dan Burgess-Milne, a Christchurch based Meditation and Dharma teacher, game theory educator and rapper. Dan performed a presentation called Shifting Paradigms at Nerd Nite and was put in touch with me through the good folk at Nerd Nite. I was quite worried I wasn't going to be able to keep up with some of the concepts Dan talked about in his presentation but after sitting down with him for an hour I actually do really understand his presentation a lot better, I hope this podcast might help you too! The other massive revelation I had from this podcast was getting a better understanding of Meditation, and how the way most people practice it is actually only doing half of what meditation is supposed to be about. It was really eye opening, and I hope you enjoy it!
Get in touch with Dan here, he's got some cool stuff in the works!
