Don and Ron Heidary have been in this particular business for over 30 years, and after listening to them explain their strategy and philosophy of CHARACTER FIRST (team culture), you will understand why. Dana is personally enthused from this conversation with a couple of this country's absolute best coaches, and Bob is cheering them, too!
Swimming World Magazine has a couple of great articles about the Heidary brothers and team culture, character:

One of the most successful collegiate careers in the business! Listen in as we have an engaging conversation with University of Virginia Head Women's and Men's coach Todd DeSorbo. Besides all of the NCAA and Olympic success, did he really say, " if there was one time-frame I would go back to in my life, it would be high school. Partly because... I loved high school, but my math classes were so much fun, and then [my coach] Nikki [Rosenbluth] was so much fun and swimming ... everything that we were doing was fun and I liked it. So it was easy to work hard at it."
Yes, he did. HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING.
We think you'll really enjoy this peek into the life and career of UVA and USA Olympic Head Coach Todd DeSorbo!

In this second part of two content-rich episodes with former Executive Director of the American Swimming Coaches Association, John Leonard, we dive DEEPLY into the problems and history associated with the PED doping scandal in our sport. From 1985 to 2020, "ASCA" and "John Leonard" were unmistakably linked. As Executive Director of the American Swimming Coaches Association for 35 years, Coach Leonard has been inextricably involved with American swimming at almost every level from LTS (Learn-to-Swim) to the US National Team, from local organization to battling athletic doping on an international scale. You ought to really enjoy this first of a two-part conversation with "Mr. ASCA."

Griffith University Study "Early Years Swimming, Adding Capital to Young Australians" - The findings of a four-year project by the Griffith Institute for Educational Research, Laurie Lawrenceβs Kids Alive Swim Program and Swim Australia have surpassed expectations and indicate that swimming children have many advantages when starting school.
βThe children were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions.β

BONUS! Nate recalls a quote attributed to Plato that βevery man is not learned until they can read, write and swimβ. A quick search led us to the rationale behind that quote that βPlato thinks of both reading and swimming as things you learn through lessons, rather than naturally. The contrast is clear: babies learn to talk and walk on their own, but you have to teach children to read and to swim.β

Coach Roy Snyder has been at the helm of the Wilson HS swim teams in Reading PA for over 60 years! Our visit with him is like strolling through a most impressive library. Join Bob and me as we are entertained and educated during this fascinating visit.
We mentioned two external items in the podcast and promised to list them here.
1-The one-time-only Olympic event that might have put observers to sleep faster than listening to this podcast, the PLUNGE, is covered in great depth and style here:
https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240720-the-extinct-olympic-sport-that-was-the-dullest-of-all-time
2-One of the most heartwarming Olympic commercials explored a topic we discussed with Roy, that of kids following their passions and finding their joy, and is titled simply, "It's OK." We think it's BETTER than "OK"!

There are two types of announcers at major televised swim meets like NCAA Championships and US Olympic Trials: the big-time network pros in the nice upstairs booth who sit before the cameras with their play-by-play and color commentary, whose words get no immediate feedback or reaction, and then there are the solo announcers, usually on-deck with all of the attending media reps, communicating directly via the PA system with the seats in the stands, the ones whose job it is to provide more than names and numbers to the spectators on-site. Kevin Cargill is a former HS and college swimmer who has been mentioned as a possible successor to the big shoes and stellar heights reached by the late Sam Kendricks, "America's Swim Meet Announcer". In Part 1 of our visit with Mark, we hear of his start in the sport and his swimmer's journey from a young Red Cross lessons swimmer, to high school, to college, and then to his start in coaching, and all of the twists and turns a young coach could possibly encounter before winding up in charge of a boys program that ultimately won TWO Swimming World "mythical" National Championships. Quite a tale, and no one better to share it.

Former UT swimmer and now GM of famed Camp Longhorn in Burnet, Texas, Bill Robertson shares stories about his swimming career, his mom and dad, and the creation of legendary CAMP LONGHORN, one of the many creations of his father, "Tex" Robertson, the first swim coach at The University of Texas, also known as "the father of Texas swimming".
A fascinating book about Tex, written by his grandson, is called simply "TEX: The Father of Texas Swimming", and details can be found at the end of this description.
Bill was a sophomore on Eddie Reese's first team at Texas, and during his 3 years under Reese, the team finished at NCAAs in a tie for 21st, 2nd, and was NCAA Champions the third year. Quite a climb, and Bill shares some fascinating stories about that and a myriad of other topics.

Jennifer LaMont became ASCA CEO in 2021, swam her HS years in Ohio for Walnut Hills HS, and club at the Cincinnati Marlins under Denny Pursley (a former guest on SwimTalk) and Frank Busch before heading west to become a USC Trojan. She was a HS state champion at WHHS, and a collegiate All American at USC. Her leadership at ASCA is taking the coaching organization in new and expanded directions, and we think to great heights. You WILL enjoy this visit with Jennifer LaMont!
