Episodes

  • 00:41 - And we back, and we back, and still black! Can you believe that it’s the last episode of Season 3? We have a unique recording setup for this final episode - watch out on social media to see Monique’s temporary studio.

2:35 - But first, what are we sippin’ on? Of course Meek has the Meka Special, peach tranquility tea with citrus mint and a hint of agave. Because she’s at home, Nique made a nice matcha green tea latte with Oatly oat milk and a splash of agave.

4:15 - Let’s talk about the season and how we got here, at the end, through all that this year and COVID has brought, the good and the challenging. Meek and Nique reflect on how the podcast started and how the community of moms has grown so much. You all inspire us and motivate us to keep going!

8:23 - This is such a reboot season, it’s comforting to revisit things that we love. Did you have a favorite episode this season that you’re re-listening to? We’ve been watching all the reboots and black comfort TV shows, getting nostalgic about the good memories those bring back. What are you watching or revisiting in your reboot season?

11:28 - Meka reviews one of her favorite episodes from this season - navigating virtual school! The adventures of school-at-home are on-going, but these offer us life lessons and teachable moments that are important for our kids to learn.

14:33 - Nique shares her experiences of having her children learning at home in a new city, wrestling with the idea of whether or not to bring the kids back to in-person school, and finding that their new routine is working so well for their family.

19:18 - Meek talks about working to find the best ways for Jagger to learn and excel in the world, to give him the tools and resources to serve his needs and watch him grow. It can be a challenge, but it’s so worth it to put our energy into our children in the ways that they need to really allow them to flourish.

23:02 - Another favorite of Nique’s is the How Are You, Really? episode. Being honest about where you are, how you’re feeling, being vulnerable, and showing that not everything is always picture-perfect is refreshing and freeing, because we don’t always have it together. We have to hold space for ourselves and others to feel how they’re actually feeling.

29:25 - A theme of this season has been “leveling up.” Meek is leveling up by taking on the #75hardchallenge and she extends that challenge to everyone else to keep working at it. Nique’s leveling up is in the form of her Peloton 100, a challenge that she made up for herself! She’s leveling up her health by being more intentional about good food, a healthy home, she completed a yoga teacher training…. She’s learning some things and doing some things!

35:34 - So, what are our Roll Out Tracks? Meka chooses Level Up by Ciara because it’s so on theme. Monique goes with Open Door Season by Dietrick Haddon, a super fun song that speaks to opportunities and leveling up in the next season.

  • 00:40 - Welcome back! Today we’re talking about friendships, strong women, supporting each other, and how important it is!

2:15 - But first, what is in your cup? Of course, Meka is having the Meka Classic, her peach, ginger, mint, with a hint of agave. Monique has a delicious South African mango rooibos. So sit with us and sip your tea while we chat.

3:22 - So, we gotta talk about friends. Meek tells us about her tribe, her girls that have been with her for decades, and reflects on how their relationships have grown from their college days until now.

5:38 - Monique explains the love of long-term, childhood friendships, but also the importance of holding space within ourselves to invite others (and be invited) into new friendships in our adult years. Meek and Nique met in their young adult years - there’s always good in meeting new people and having new friends!

8:15 - True friendship looks like fruitful relationships and people who inspire you. Those who you can Facetime in Covid, who can see you in your sweats and being real.

11:33 - We sidebar for a minute, our experiences as black women are so important. Remember to use your words, recognize people and the space we take up, and offer respect. See black people, respect our space, see us. Having friends that affirm you and your experiences are needed so we can digest these together, without judgement, so it doesn’t make us go insane!

14:00 - Representation in your friend group and in your experiences is so important so we can relate to each other, support each other, and be intentional in what we do, how we behave, and how we treat others. Pouring into each other means we are filling ourselves up too - friendship is a two-way street and we have to meet each other where we’re at.

18:00 - Who pushes you to grow? The friendships that Meka and Monique appreciate the most are those from women who pray for them, uplift them, challenge them to grow and change, who celebrate their successes and who do better with them. Those who want you to stay the same may end up being toxic, holding you back from being the best you can be. Cheer your friends on and let them feel your support and love!

23:23 - Meka shares a few tips on how to be intentional with your friends. First, check in with them - like really check in to make sure they’re okay, don’t just like their Insta. Second, know what your friends’ love language is! Learn how to support them in the way that they value the most.

25:00 - Meek says another tip is to support your mama friends by also taking care of their kids. Give the mamas a break to take care of themselves, run errands, do a date night, or engage with the kids in a creative way to give the parents a break while building bonds.

27:00 - Most importantly, friendships are two-sided, so remember to check the balance. Sometimes the scales will teeter to one person or another in our times of need, but the investments in each other and our relationships are critical to our own health and happiness. Finding your people, especially as an adult, is so special.

28:25 - We gotta bring it home with our Drive Tracks! We’re listening to What About Your Friends by TLC and More Than Anything by Sunday Service Choir, because we still got Jesus when all our friends are gone.

  • 00:40 - We back! Thrivin’ and survivin’. We’re excited about this episode today because we’re talking about the state of our marriages and all about our husbands, the lessons, the takeaways, and how we are doing it together.

2:55 - But first, what are you sippin’ on? Meka has the Meka blend, a peach, citrus, mint blend with just a hint of agave. Nique has peach oolong tea, a nice fruity, black tea. Be on the lookout for a tea list!

4:05 - Getting right into it: The State of Our Marriages. For Meka, she and Jacobi are getting on to year 8 together, 4 kids in, and finding balance with each other. He’s the calm to her crazy, the fun parent to her enforcer. Monique and Pierce are on 14 years together, 12 of those married! Nique is the orderly and laid back one and Pierce is the solid, visionary, planner.

7:57 - So, how has COVID impacted our relationships? It’s definitely annoying being together all the time. Yeah, we love each other, but your own space is nice. Meek finds her therapy in time away at the store, walking around getting groceries or doing a Target run.

10:55 - Meka stresses the importance of stopping and intentionally remembering your spouse. Getting a date night in is so nice! Having that time together, getting dressed up, having fun - it’s critical to reconnect one on one.

12:39 - Monique’s experience with Pierce during COVID… well, there was only one time during lockdown that she thought it was done. But those moments let us know how we can rebuild together to be stronger. Nique and Pierce are each other’s TEAM - built on Trust, Empathy, Adoration, and Mission.

16:40 - It’s always helpful to remember you were a couple first, you have so many shared experiences and memories, you grew together and it is a wonderful foundation to come back to when things get difficult.

18:45 - The ladies talk about the realness of needing their own space (maybe their own separate house) - so everything can be the way it needs to be, for serenity, for independence. Family can come visit, don’t worry! Having time to be yourself by yourself is so important to your mental health and wellbeing. What is your sacred time and space?

23:50 - Marriage and relationships are also about sex, but how has COVID and being home all the time changed our sex lives? The ladies share some wise words. Be intentional, keep the fire, find the spice, and find other couples who are gonna keep it real with you.

29:07 - We gotta wrap up with our drive tracks! Keeping with today’s theme, Meka is listening to Crazy in Love by Beyonce, and Nique is feeling two songs - you can always rely on Jhene Aiko but Moments by Big Sean really speaks to her right now.

Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on their socials!

  • 00:40 - And we back! We are on top of it today - we are starting with what we’re sipping on. Meek has her Meka Classic, her peach, mint, and ginger, while Nique has got her trusty citrus mint.

4:05 - Today, we are talking about all things four-legged, our furry best friends, we’re talking dog moms today. If you have furbabies, this episode is for you! Monique starts off with her story of how she is dog-mom-adjacent. She is a surrogate dog mama, loving and supporting her pups from afar, but it’s just not a perfect fit up close.

7:05 - Meka has a bernedoodle named Marley, her super smart, not shedding, huge furbaby. Marley is a big, gentle baby, even though she is larger than Elle and almost as tall as Meka when she’s on her hind legs! Marley and Axel especially have a sweet relationship, because they grew up together.

10:40 - Nique talks about Onyx, her pup living with her in-laws. Onyx is a mini Australian labradoodle who fits in perfectly with her in-laws because he’s a great connection point for the family to talk over!

12:04 - Meek points out that having a dog is great, but can be inconvenient for when we’re able to travel again… but this is where Nique shines as a dog auntie and she is down to babysit. Although, Meka breaks the news that they’re welcoming another furry addition to the family, and she’s encouraging other families to welcome bernedoodles into their homes too!

14:47 - Meka needs your help, listeners - who else has two big dogs and kids and can handle it?? Dogs are forever babies and will always need you to keep them on routine. Keep this in mind when you’re thinking of adding a furbaby to your family!

18:00 - Stay tuned for the adventures of Marley and Harley (maybe a new insta is on its way). Meka’s kids are excited to have the new puppy but also are ready to take on the responsibilities too.

19:50 - No matter which way you have a dog in your life, whether you’re a dog mama or a dog auntie, these pups do bring happiness and enjoyment to us. They’re always so happy to see you and other people are nice to you too!

21:10 - We can’t say bye without our Drive Tracks. Add these to your playlist - Big Sean Wolves (keeping with the fur theme), and a classic, Whitney Houston’s Every Woman.

Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on their updated socials!

  • 00:40 - Hey mamas, welcome back! We back and still Black and excited to be here with you! Don’t forget your tea. You know what Meka is sippin on - her peach, mint, ginger classic with honey mixed in. Monique is changing it up today by sipping on some matcha.

04:32 - This year of 2020 has been something else for us all. The ladies reflect on how they brought in 2020 and how different the start of the year was from our current situation. We’ve all learned so much since the pandemic hit, but what exactly have these lessons been? Meek feels she’s gained perspective on how short and special life really is, as we’ve all gone through so much loss this year. Let’s use every talent and ounce of energy we have to put into living a rich and good life.

08:45 - Nique adds to that sentiment, realizing she’s at the “ma’am” stage of her life and she wholly embraces it! Let’s give love to each other while we’re here, not just when we lose someone or are faced with pain.

12:32 - Anybody else have that creeping feeling that the other shoe is gonna drop? Sometimes, it can be hard to enjoy all the good things in life because we’re so conditioned to expect and prepared for bad things - thinking about what happens if a partner dies, where are all the important documents, what happens to the family dynamic, having all these hard conversations!

14:55 - One of the biggest lessons of 2020 is that we can do better, we can do so much better and we have the capacity to elevate the work that we’re doing to do more for ourselves, our minds, our kids, our communities. Monique talks about the simple joy of having a bathtub and time to think and gain perspective, of up and moving to a new city and understand what is really needed in life.

17:20 - Meka adds that she is more present, more grateful for what she has and her journey to this point in her life, and the fact that there is more growth in her future. She is learning to love what she has, is letting go of the junk, and reshaping what home means to her.

19:57 - The ladies encourage the listeners, if there’s somewhere else that you’re being called to be, take the leap and watch the doors open up for you. Even when you’re scared, you can do it and create change in your life! What would your excellent day and excellent life look like?

22:53 - Even though this year has been challenging, with so much loss and so many changes, there is good still happening! Marriages and celebrations, job growth and babies being born; remember to focus in on the good.

25:45 - Meek and Nique reflect on how the pandemic has grounded their travel plans and remember back on their last plane trips. There’s so much about traveling that we miss, but maybe there are some changes we can make when we are able to travel again - travel less, stay longer, be more present and thankful for being able to be somewhere new.

28:24 - We always gotta end with our Drive Tracks. Meka is listening to the whole Detroit 2 album by Big Sean but is especially loving Harder Than My Demons. Monique is listening to Stevie Wonder’s Don’t You Worry Bout a Thing, which is especially fitting for the present time.

Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on their updated socials!

  • 00:45 - We’re back! We all made it through another day of virtual learning at home in this crazy pandemic. And that’s what this episode is about - how we’re making it through distance learning, what we’re learning while our kids are in school at home, and what our escapes are looking like now. Who else has personal time in the car or at the Target drive-thru?

04:56 - So, what have been the biggest challenges of school-at-home so far? For Meka, she’s in the first week of kindergarten and it is a struggle to get Jagger out of bed and motivated to do schoolwork. But, the ladies applaud that the kids are able to function and even try going to school right now - it’s a lot of work and they’re struggling too!

08:55 - Speaking of challenges, virtual school also means that our schedules, routines, and structures have changed. Workouts can’t happen whenever we want, the living space has changed to accommodate school, and we are literally living in the living room. We’ve all just become more adaptable and adjusted our spaces so we can live, work, play, and chill.

12:02 - Monique talks about the challenges of living downtown and navigating the city when they get the kids outside for “recess” - avoiding fast cars and narrow sidewalks, but this also creates the opportunity to have new outdoor adventures.

12:40 - However, there are some highlights! Meek loves not having the daily early rising and long commute to get to school. Nique includes an imaginary “commute” to school every day, so the kids can feel set up and ready for school. We’ve all got some more time in our mornings to get creative (or sleep more)!

14:33 - Speaking of time, it’s tea time. Meka is sipping on The Meka, her peach, mint, and ginger classic. Maybe she’ll find a mango tea next time. Nique has got a citrus green tea, a good mid-morning tea to keep you going!

15:37 - The ladies talk about how lunchtime has changed for the better. With all the extra time we have with the kids now, Meek and Nique are feeding them hot, nutritious lunches and trying new things (air fryer fish sticks, anyone?). Making new menus and giving lunch fun, fancy names is definitely another highlight of virtual school right now.

19:27 - Meek and Nique talk about the processes of learning schoolwork, submitting assignments, and teaching the kids technical skills they need to participate wholly in virtual school so they can continue to learn and grow. But, it can be hard to keep up with everyone’s different schedules and calendar reminders - remember to give yourself some grace, teach self-sufficiency to your kids, and allow your kids to also figure out how to navigate their day.

24:33 - Meka talks about how virtual school has also given her perspective of what she has, and what she’s able to give her kids. Two of Jagger’s classmates have to do school from a daycare center instead of from home because parents still have to work, juggle life, and figure out how to give their kids a safe place to learn. We all have to do whatever we can to make it work for our families during this time.

29:50 - In all this, though, we all still struggle, including the kids. They’re missing their friends, missing their routines, and the extracurriculars that got them out of the house. Meek and Nique discuss how their kids all cope differently and how they channel their frustrating moments into creative outlets and socially distant activities.

38:08 - Of course we have to wrap up with our Drive Tracks (for those pretend commutes right now). Meka is listening to Lucky Me by Vic Shawn, which is grounded in his personal experience with a medical scare that turned out to be nothing. Nique has been feeling nostalgic, listening to Lauryn Hill’s Nothing Even Matters, and the whole Miseducation of Lauryn Hill album.

  • 00:42 - The ladies are back! We have an exciting topic today - fitness! Monique is the fit momma and Meka has just started her own “sweat-xy” fitness journey, so we’re talking from every perspective. Remember, the kids are always watching, so let’s be good examples. There are so many ways to incorporate exercise into family time and it makes it so much more fun!

4:44 - Meek talks about taking the plunge and buying herself the Peloton bike. Make sure to check out her blog post about the reasons why it’s worth that investment, because she’s already feeling and seeing the benefits. Nique has been a Peloton member for a while, so if you want to be Team Peloton with the communitea, hit up the ladies for referral codes and get some money off on your bike accessories!

7:50 - We have to sweat for our health. The CDC cites that the leading cause of death for black women is heart disease, so we have to do the work to keep our bodies strong and healthy. If you don’t want to spend the money on a Peloton, download a fitness app to get you going or simply go out for a walk! It also just makes you feel good, so get out and do it.

10:45 - Technology today helps so much too! The ladies talk about the different exercises that you can add to your Apple watch, the motivation of closing your activity rings, and taking on challenges with your friends.

14:45 - Just like jump rope, we gotta jump in at the right time with what we’re sipping on today. Meka’s got her signature staple, her Ginger Peach and Mint tea, while Nique is trying something new, a Japanese green tea called gyokuro.

15:42 - And we’re jumping back into fitness! From jump ropes to hoola hoops, some of our childhood favorites can be fun or just plain ridiculous.

18:00 - Fitness and health go hand in hand, and a big part of health is staying hydrated. Drink that water and get some sunshine, because we’re basically plants.

18:37 - Let’s talk yoga. Yoga is so great for your body because it’s all bodyweight strength exercise, it’s about mindfulness and focusing on yourself. We know Monique is the yoga queen, so check out her practice and even schedule a flow session with her on her website!

24:21 - Fitness is a journey and it’s a process. No, we’re not always in the best shape ever all the time, but we’re going to be working out to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Try some of the things that Meek and Nique have - crossfit, weights, spinning, and get you some new kicks to look good too!

25:50 - Fit Chiks Omi and Nicki have inspired Meka so much recently by making Black Girls Skating go viral! They look fire and rollerblading is definitely some work. Being physically active doesn’t have to be super strenuous or boring - it can be fun! Go ice skating, involve the family, challenge yourself to do a little more every day. We have so many opportunities to get our bodies moving.

28:55 - Need some fit-spiration? Follow our friends Omi and Tiffany and find other people who are doing the dang thing and motivate you to do more for yourself! We all need that positive encouragement.

30:00 - Drive Tracks have a workout theme today. We’re listening to Kanye West’s Workout Plan and Brand New Me by Alicia Keys. Add these jams to your workout playlist, then let us know what you’re listening to!

Make sure to follow Meek and Nique on their updated socials!

  • 00:80 - And we back, and we back, and still black! Are you sipping with us, communitea? Today, Meka is sipping on her fave Peach Ginger and Mint tea, and Nique is changing it up with some peppermint. Christmas in July, anyone?

2:20 - This episode is all about how we are doing; like really, how are you? What sparked this was a sentence in a Bible plan - “we walk through life with our masks on” - that captures how we have to change our authentic selves. If you’re wearing your mask and I’m wearing mine, how are we ever going to know each other? Today, we’re going to show up authentically and really see each other, pain, flaws, and all.

4:05 - Being authentic and honest with ourselves is so valuable, especially now, because it allows us to find the support we need. As mamas, Meek and Nique know how much they’re doing for their children, and that there are other mothers out there doing 100% for their kids by themselves. Being with our kids 24/7 in this pandemic is hard!

7:85 - Yes, we love and care for our kids, but you bet we are gonna take our time for ourselves! Taking time for you allows you to re-energize and come home stronger for your family and for yourself.

8:95 - The ladies talk about how they’re doing - like, how they’re really doing. Meek talks about how she’s really feeling more stress free, sleeping in, living life as a night hawk. Nique describes feeling a deeper inner peace, a gratitude for where she is in life, being amazed at how her children are growing into their own lives.

12:30 - The ladies talk about how the changes the pandemic has brought this year has also invited a new calmness and a scaled-back approach to life, while wrestling with a feeling of nostalgia and longing for going to do things. Meek and Nique talk about how the new adaptations COVID has forced on us has made them more creative, more appreciative, and helped them realize that the little things are so big and important.

17:96 - The conversation turns to taking ourselves too seriously, especially growing up in a black household where that behavior was definitely side-eyed by our elders. Let’s live life, kids, and let’s learn how to let go a little bit, adults.

20:20 - Mental health is so important, especially right now, for the mamas who are home and taking care of the kids and getting ready for virtual school. We have to use the resources around us, whether that is therapy or a spiritual director, we have to have someone who we can talk to as a sounding board to cope with all of the things that we as black women, black mothers, have to live with each day. It’s okay to not be okay, and it’s okay to get help!

25:96 - Monique reflects on an experience she had with an acquaintance that made her realize: what would happen if two people showed up as their authentic selves? If we could introduce ourselves truly and authentically… what would we even say?? Our life circumstances make us who we are, it doesn’t hold us back, so we need to learn how to own it.

30:85 - We’re going to leave it there with some Drive Tracks. Meek’s track is Freedom by Beyonce because it makes her feel empowered to be free from the stress and anxiety of Corporate America. Nique is listening to India. Aire’s Strength, Courage & Wisdom because it’s a great song that features all black artists

  • 1:12 - This episode, we’re starting with the tea. Meka is sipping on her trusty Peach, Ginger, and Mint tea, and Nique has a Hibiscus Berry with a dash of agave. Good tea for today’s episode.

2:30 - The ladies dive into the fun things that they and the kids have been doing while in Covid lockdown. Meek shares about how she took her family to a drive-through farm to see and feed all the different animals, which was so fun for the kids (but expensive for mama)! Video on that coming soon....

6:30 - Hellman’s Mayonnaise or Miracle Whip? There’s no debate on this podcast. It’s gotta be Hellman’s!

7:30 - Nique talks about how their family has been riding bikes together, seeing her eldest teach the youngest how to ride without training wheels, and seeing her kids truly bond with each other in this time of Covid.

9:05 - The ladies talk about Family Night Fridays - finding the right movie, gotta get the pizza! Meka talks about watching Babysitter’s Club on Netflix and how it’s so different from what they used to watch, because it addresses real topics like divorce, LGBTQ+, racism, and other important social topics that children and pre-teens have to navigate.

12:00 - Meek and Nique go through their other Netflix recommendations and how both their households are obsessed with The Floor is Lava! Are your kids obsessed too? Who would be on your team?

17:25 - Nique is appreciating spending time with her husband and being outside more. They reflect on the Saharan dust storm that came through and appreciate the calm of the summer nights, even though it’s hard to be grounded and not travelling right now.

  • 00:40 - We back! The ladies are ready for a new season and are going to push their conversations to the next level to address and reflect on what is happening in the world.

2:20 - Meka gives a life update about her career and catches us up on changes that she has been through in recent months. She made plans to leave her job in June, but Covid came through and changed everything.

6:15 - The ladies reflect on how Covid has impacted their lives, how it has been a humbling experience, and how it has been a strangely positive opportunity for true rest. They speak on how they have been able to reconnect and be involved more deeply in their children’s lives (even though it can make you crazy sometimes).

9:00 - The theme of today’s episode is grounded in real, honest talk about being Black in America, how Black Lives Matter and how that applies to Black women and mothers, and how to find courage through all that is happening in this country right now.

11:20 - Meek shares about explaining to her son about slavery and their ancestors, about the strength of Black history, and how nothing has meaningfully changed since then. More needs to be done.

12:40 - Meek and Nique reflect on how they coped with the heartbreaking murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd, and how deeply it impacted them as individuals, as Black women, and what action they began to see around them as a reaction to these crimes.

15:50 - Nique shares her frustration around the white women who reached out on social media after George Floyd’s murder, that those messages felt disingenuine because they had never reached out before, didn’t follow any other Black people on socials, and it seemed more like a “am I a good white person” check.

18:06 - Meek shares an experience about picking up her son from daycare (pre-Covid) where another mother asked who she was and why she was there… because she had never seen Meek before. It’s incredibly infuriating to have people question Black parents who are simply just parenting, or doing anything else!

22:40 - Meek shares a quote: “Look at Black people, learning stocks, buying plants, saving money, prioritizing health, exercising, uniting, progressing. Rest looks so good on us.” This quote is so perfect for what they need right now, and encapsulates what the ladies are so excited for this season.

24:21 - Nique reflects on balancing the work and the rest, in combination with her husband who is working hard to tackle Covid, and teaming up to ensure that there is Covid testing accessibility in black communities that need it!

27:45 - “It’s not an if, it’s a when.” Meek and Nique discuss what it’s like to live every day in this world as a Black person, as a Black woman, and a Black mother. The fear that they carry every day is not right and needs to change, but it has made them strong. We will come back to this all season long, this is the real and raw work.

29:05 - But here’s the tea for today! Nique is sipping on Rosehip and Camomile to help with the zen needed to address the topics in today’s episode. Meek is sipping on her go-to of Peach, Ginger, and Mint tea, because when she finds something she likes, she sticks with it.

31:11 - What do you call Drive Tracks in the time of Covid? Mommy Mood Makers? We’ll come up with a new name... Meek and Nique have been listening to Triggered by Jhene Aiko and Black by Buddy. Give these a listen until next time!

  • 02:15 - First, before we move forward what tea are we sipping on? Meek is sipping on some raspberry leaf tea and Nique is sipping on Honey Lemon. They conclude that the studio tea staples are Raspberry leaf, Peach and Ginger and Spearmint. We hope you have a good situation in your cup as well!

03:35 - Nique reveals this episode's theme, “Spring Break Ideas”. They both have the spring break fever, Meek is so ready for the warmth and some sun rays. Nique acknowledges that she is soft living in NC compared anywhere up north where there is snow and it is bone-chilling cold.

04:20 - Nique has regional expectations, if she lived in Minnesota she would need a Range Rover and a constant rotation of UGG’s to survive. Meek relates, she has a friend who lives in Minnesota and they constantly wear UGG’s.

04:55 - Nique kicks off the conversation by asking Meek, “What is your spring break idea #1”? Meek says, “Going to the Caribbean”, she is behind on her plans but she wants an easy flight and a nice all-inclusive package for the kids.

05:55 - The duo reiterates that during this episode you will gain practical, useful choices for your own adventure from their idea bank. First and foremost it is all about getting family time in. Some ideas are definitely on the bucket list.

06:45 - Nique actually started planning a California spring break adventure for her family, but she got a hard stop after sharing the details of the trip with her kids. When asked what they would rather do, her son reminded her that there are landmarks at their grandpa and grandma's house in Iowa and that is their first choice. Nique and her husband may decide to have their own adventure, currently, Toronto and Omaha are on their list.

09:05 - Meek’s family has experienced California for spring break. They went to Legoland in San Diego and another year they went to San Francisco and enjoyed the Golden Gate Bridge. Meek has many fond memories of California and encourages Nique to definitely make it there with her family in the future.

10:15 - Nique brings up another spring break idea, she believes spring back can be a slowdown. You can stay stateside or in your city, there are so many interesting places to visit such as state parks, being in nature is always a great idea. Also, having a declutter day where you fill up bags to donate. Meek has staycation on her list as well but she throws in the idea of going to a hotel for one night, Meek’s kids love indoor pools. Nique mentions going to the dollar tree and even decorating the hotel room and the importance of giving yourself a theme and budget. Meek believes you do not need to feel like you have to live up to any expectations of spring break, this is not Instagram. The most important thing is that you are with your family, making memories.

13:35 - Meek’s next idea is to take a road trip, even though she personally does not want to be in a car for more than 5 hours. And, you do not have to go far, Meek loves Wilmington for some beach time because it is a 1 to 2-hour drive from her home. But, Meek is very set on spring break in the Caribbean, she wants to GO! Something is calling her there. One thing, Meek’s two youngest haven’t used their passports and she wants them to experience the beach vibes. Nique promotes NC, there are so many great cities to visit within a couple of hours.

16:20 - Meek has another idea for spring break and it revolves around the importance of family nights. It is one of her favorite things to do with her family, all you need is a good movie, homemade popcorn, the fireplace on and laughter. The big takeaway, there is nothing wrong with staying home and relaxing. Home is where the heart is :).

17:35 - Nique feels like spring break is a great time for service and there are two options. It is an excellent time to find a service project to complete as a family. Or, for her family, it is not always about physically doing something with a local at need group. She really feels it is most important to remember to just show up and let yourself be the light in the environment and leave people better than you found them.

19:40 - Nique brings up an important point, the people you are serving can also be your friends. It is not about I’m helping you, it can also just mean being present for your friend. It is all about getting out of your normal environment and being immersed in another environment.

20:15 - Meek wraps up her top three spring break ideas including staycation, Caribbean and a road trip. She loves the idea of incorporating service into spring break and she loves Nique’s idea of decorating the room if you splurge for a hotel room for a night. They both hope spring break is lit on your level this year. Nique wants to add in random fire questions to each episode and Mom confessions of the week.

21:35 - Nique does not wait until next week to begin Mom confessions, she asks Meek what her Mom confession of the week is. Meek says that it is her chosen snack eaten away from her kids. If she has a snack that she wants then she very well may hide it in her closet and eat it without feeling guilty. She does not feel bad her kids have an entire pantry of stuff that they like. They both agree it feels good to say no sometimes. Nique’s Mom's confession of the week is that she wants to celebrate the fact that she ate pizza with actual cheese for the first time in a very long time. It was a plain cheese pizza and she has been planning for this, so she bought some Lactaid so she didn’t die. Nique believes you need to give yourself indulgences as a balance in your life. Meek just started eating chicken again! Her husband always says, “It is all in moderation babe.” Now they are determined to find the best cheese pizza around and have a date.

27:30 - Drive Tracks!! Meek’s drive track is “Shell Shock” from the Ninja Turtle Soundtrack, but you have to tell Alexa, “Alexa play Shell Shock by Juicy Jay”, it is the only way she will play the song. Nique’s drive track is a throwback, “Dirty Computer '' by Janelle Monåe, she really needed this song today because she went to the grocery store with her husband they were asked if they wanted to split the order, Nique said in all things love and replied, “I hope my husband is buying my breakfast.”

  • 01:24 - The ladies are hype to be here today, it is a bit chilly outside, but sunny. First, before we move forward what tea are we sipping on? Meek is sipping on some raspberry leaf tea with a half teaspoon of agave, Nique is sipping on a matcha green tea latte, she went latte style this time, so it’s with oat drink, it isn’t super sweet but she brought a chocolate bar to balance the sweetness.

02:40 - Nique reveals this episode's theme, “Family Flow”. They are both routine queens and Meek does not feel like you can be as successful if you do not have a routine. Nique has to swap the word routine with flow, and Meek says she calls it a guide. There is always room to divert from your flow or guide for the day, audit or edit.

03:45 - Today’s talk will consist of five techniques that help their families thrive. This week’s theme is actually brought to you by someone who attended the podcast launch and submitted an idea.

04:42 - Meek begins with one of her techniques “Meal Prep”, she made meal prep for the entire month and it really helped her know what was for dinner, now she does also admit that it has fallen off, but she recommends breakfast for dinner in case you don’t know what you are going to eat. Meek shares a funny story about her son’s love for eggs and the process and time required for boiling an egg that he doesn’t understand yet.

06:32 - Nique piggybacks of Meek and shares her blue apron days, where she felt like there was so much packaging and everything had its own bag, and the food was a bit fine dinning for her kids. None of those meal preps is any joke including mincing garlic, dicing and simmering and she felt she often put it on the table and had her children tell her this looks gross and it took 30 mins!! She feels like her family is finally aged enough to enjoy the days of food subscription and the food prep required behind it. Nique shares a tip, everyone in her family is helping cook and Meek agrees, the kids eat it when they are invested in cooking the food as well. Meek shares a funny saying she has when her kids don’t want to eat what she has prepared, “Either you have this, or you can have an air sandwich”, and it has not failed her yet.

09:40 - Nique’s technique # 2 is having a school routine. Meek says she doesn’t have a big school routine, but the one thing that does simplify the process is that they wear uniforms. She is making sure her children are reading because they do not do screen time throughout the week.

11:00 - Nique says, “ I think in our house, we make school the main event for the week, it is Monday through Friday so it is the main event and we hype it.” Nique loves the morning, the drive, leaving the house and the flow of the morning is nostalgic for her because she drove in a car to school with her siblings every day. She makes it a priority to talk about their days at dinner, they go through the roses and thorns of the day. She makes it a priority during the drive to do the daily bible verse of the day, they do their mantras and goodbyes, and she loves that.

12:15: Meek confesses that the drive to school is a sore subject, they drive about 45 mins each way, and traffic can be unpredictable. Sweet Maverick does not like to be late, he often asks, “Are we going to be late today, because I do not want a tardy” haha.

13:25: Meek goes into her next technique which is Alexa alerts. There is a morning Alexa alert, to get ready to leave and an Alexa alert at night around 7:30 PM, then a wrap-up alert for bathtime, with an 8:00 PM alert to get your buns in the bed and start reading, 8:30 PM alert is lights out for her children. She has a personal alert on her Alexa that says “Goodnight Herald family”, and it tells them the weather for tomorrow. She believes it helps move through the morning and evening, almost like school bells moving kids through classes.

14:45: Nique uses alerts as well, Quad City DJ’s song Come on Ride That Train is her children’s morning 7:30 PM alert to get out the door and into the car. Both confess that their alerts help them to not feel rushed, which both dislike.

16:35: Niques next technique is that the weekend is sacred time, one of their implementations is the screen-free zone until 9:30 AM in the morning, this helps keep them on a routine, they ask the kids to do their morning flow, get up like your normal school day, make sure your hydrated and get dressed, be a human and then zone out for a little bit.

18:45: Meek next technique is to have a trusted village to help you assist with your children, her village is Nana and Poppa and Auntie because they all live in the same area. Having people that they can trust allows her and her husband to go on date nights. It helps that they have their own space at Nana and Poppa’s, they enjoy using their tablets at their grandparent’s house. Meek tells a funny story that Axle is in love with his tablet and he counts down the days of the week until Friday because he gets to play with his tablet then.

21:00: Nique and her husband recharge with date days. They have been soaking in their bible time, they are on day 57 of reading the bible every day. They have a bible study, it is part of their nightly routine, they have tea and popcorn, sometimes they watch a show, it is a great routine to end their nights with God, Nique sleeps better afterward.

23:00: Meek gets into her personal routine. She has her away time, me time, “Meka time”, this means she can be a better wife and mother to all her children. She got away to Charlotte, trusting her family and she really let herself be present and not check-in all weekend with her children.

24:35: Nique gets into her personal routine. She is really into her health routine for her family and keeping them healthy. She finds that hand washing is the one thing we can all day to make a huge difference in staying healthy. She tells a funny story of a flight attendant misunderstanding their travel routine.

28:30: Nique mentions her UV wand. Meek shares her first experience with the UV wand, where Nique scanned her phone to show how dirty it was. Nique advises that you Lysol or sanitize your phone regularly..

29:30: Meek’s last technique is that she loves sharing her iPhone calendar with her husband, it helps her mentally prepare for what is happening each day between both of them and their children. Anytime she adds anything to her calendar, it updates her family’s phones. She makes sure they all have 2-hour alerts before any even, so they can prepare. Nique agrres says it helps you stay in sync with your husband and family.

31:20: Drive Tracks!! Nique has come up with a term, PWPT, Predominately White People Tracks, she added one for this week Drive Tracks, Imagine Dragons, on their Origins soundtrack the song Burnout. Meek’s drive track is dedicated to her daughter, her team has won five volleyball games in a row and she gets hype listening to her pre-game track, Justin Biebers Yummy.

She also shares that she has been pre-approved for her second rental property and her real-estate aspirations are slowly coming together!

10:15 - Nique talks about still being on this high from tackling her goal to reach 60-minute on her Peloton, she had to push through many mental hurdles. Meek witnessed a wedding proposal, her family just grew a little more.

13:09 - Nique ends with her final discussion on settling into her life with the location she lives in and accepting it as it is.

  • 1:30 - Welcome back to Tea with Meek and Nique! Let’s start with the tea we’re sipping on - Meek is sipping on some peach tranquility tea, she has really been on a peach kick lately. Nique is sipping on raspberry leaf tea which if you don’t know ladies is an awesome tea for women to drink that helps with your menstrual cycle and so much more. We hope you are sipping on something great mamas.

3:29 - Today’s topic is our experience as being both Stay at Home Mom’s and Career Mom’s. This is not one is better than the other, but this is about Meek and Nique sharing their experiences but also being honest about which is harder, they will answer this question a bit later in the show.

4:45 - Let’s get to know Meek and Nique’s education and career backgrounds before we discuss the main topic of today. Both have undergraduate and master’s degrees, these are some highly educated Mama’s and they tell you all about it here. We learn that Meek was the first person to go to college in her family, which is a big deal!! They also discuss what they are currently doing “job-wise”.

6:49 - We find out that there was a time when Meek and Nique were both stay-at-home moms. Meek details her experience and how she made the decision to be a career Mom. We learn that Nique was a language arts teacher. And how Nique uses her love of teaching in her Mom life.

9:05 - We learn that Meek also wanted to be a teacher at one time and considered being a social worker. But, she didn’t feel like either career really fit her vision of the life she wanted.

10:00 - Meek asks Nique, “How has your professional experience enhanced your mothering?”. We learn that she always had her teacher hat on, she created a structured pre-school for her children and loved finding teachable moments with her children. Nique throws the question back to Meek, and she explains how she loves to incorporate technology into her mothering. We hear a funny story about Meek making her child fill out her Chick-fil-a survey. Both tell stories when they made their children call and order food or order food at a restaurant. Both discuss the importance of incorporating real-life teachable moments into your mothering.

14:40 - Both discuss letting their children make their own decisions, and navigate the world around them alone in some situation, believing that it builds self-confidence. And, how wonderful it is to see them grow into their own person. Both discuss wanting their children to be well rounded. Meek tells a funny story about her son learning street smarts when trading with friends.

18:15 - Both discuss their ultimate personal career goals, not too oddly enough they have similar overall goals of career happiness, one big one being autonomous over their days and building the brands they are currently working on. Tea with Meek and Nique being one of those brands they want to build to success and one that makes money, haha. Nique wants to know she is helping others and they both want to operate with their purpose.

22:42 - Now for the topic of the day! “Which is harder being a stay at home mom or career mom”. They both agree they are equally hard with their own challenges and rewards. They discuss their joys and trials, both have experienced being stay at home and career moms. Nique started working at 14 and she jokes that like Barbie she’s had a ton of jobs. But, when she was a teacher she felt aligned in her purpose. Nique describes being a stay at home Mom as being a domestic CEO, with no lunch breaks or clock-out time.

22:40 - Meek has a similar experience as Nique, she has worked since she was 16. She describes how it was mentally challenging at first going from working to being a stay at home Mom. Meek discusses how she thought being a stay at home Mom would be luxurious but she quickly found out it can be very hectic and sometimes overwhelming. Also, after working her entire life she was independent and it was hard to not be. So, she decided to make a shift and find a job.

27:35 - Meek is candid about being a career Mom and how somedays she feels lacking over something as simple as what to feed her family for dinner, but she finds peace in knowing no matter if there is a specific plan each night, she knows her family is fed and growing. They agree there is no debate, "Mom life is trill and we are all making it work for our families".

28:50 - They share a nugget for the Mom’s out there in the trenches. Meek’s nugget is “Have your tribe, the people you can talk to and vent to and hold them close”. Nique’s nugget is “This too shall pass", it is a temporary assignment, savor it, before you know it you will be looking at them graduating from high school.

24:35 - It’s time for Drive Tracks: what are we listening to on the road? Meek is enjoying Jesus Walks by Kanye West, she has been back on her old Kanye. Nique is enjoying Queen and Slim soundtrack.
