  • Are you stuck at home right now? Yeah, me too. But that doesn't mean I've given up on getting better at tennis. Not at all! I am doing all kinds of things to improve my tennis game and you can too. Because just because we can't get out on the tennis court right now, doesn't mean there aren't things we can do in the comfort and safety of our own homes to get better at the game we all love so much. So, in this episode of Tennis Quick Tips, I'm going to tell you what I'm doing right now to play better tennis without playing tennis.

  • One of the things that makes tennis a unique sport is that, in most of the matches we play, our opponent is also our umpire. The one person who has a definite interest in having calls go against us is often the very person making those calls. And because of this, because in the vast majority of our matches, there is an absence or a virtual absence of any on-court officials, cheating in tennis is very easy. All you have to do is say "out," and you can win the point. And win it with almost no penalty for this unethical behavior.

So what can we do to deal with cheaters in tennis? How can we try to get our opponents to follow the rules? That's what we're talking about in this episode - how to deal with tennis cheaters.

  • If you have listened to past episodes of Tennis Quick Tips, then you already know how much I love to talk about the rules and matches and how that all works. But one thing I've never really talked about, for some unknown reason, is the difference between officiated and unofficiated tennis matches. And specifically, how the rules can be a little different depending on whether you are playing an officiated or an unofficiated match. So in this episode we'll get into the difference between officiated and unofficiated matches and why you should care.

  • Hey all! As I’m recording this episode, it’s March 13, 2020 and things in the world are disconcerting, to put it mildly. So because this is having a big impact not just on our lives, but on our tennis lives, I’m doing a super quick podcast episode here about COVID-19, otherwise known as the Corona Virus. You’ll notice there’s no music and none of the other fancy stuff I usually do in my podcasts. I just wanted to put this together quickly because I think this is an important topic for all of us.

The fact is that the threat of Corona Virus is quite serious. We all need to do what we can to prevent the spread and “flatten the curve” and if that means not playing tennis for a while, then that’s what I’ll do. But for now, I’m still playing. And while I’m not a doctor, and nothing I say here should be taken as medical advice, I do have a few safety precautions I’m observing to hopefully keep myself and those around me healthy. And I want to let you know what I’m doing so you can think about what you might do if you’re still able to get out and play some tennis. Again, this is not medical advice, just some common sense tips from one tennis player to another.

So listen in for my tips or health precautions that I think tennis players can observe to stay health and to help protect the health of others.

  • Well, here's something I've never done before. I'm going back into the Tennis Quick Tips archives to bring you a "best of" episode! Today, I'm going all the way back to Episode 3 of Tennis Quick Tips, which was called "What To Do When You Win the Spin." And I'm going back to this episode because I not only had a listener recently ask me about this topic, but it also came up in a tennis match I just played.

Now, I've never done this before, replay a previous episode. And that's because I have a LONG LIST of things I still have never talked about and want to talk about on this podcast. But I decided to re-listen to this episode, thinking I would update it and add some new info, but it turns out that Episode 3 pretty much did a good job of analyzing this episode and explaining what I think you should do when you win the spin.

So, listen in to what I had to say way back in Episode 3 and then I'll give you my thoughts on what I do now when this comes up in my matches. Here it is - a blast from the Tennis Quick Tips past, what to do when you win the spin!

  • Well, I’m still talking about the Australian Open! I’m sure I’ll bring up that time I went to the Australian Open in this podcast every chance I get. Anyway, a super critical match that happened while I was there was the quarterfinal match between Roger Federer and up-and-comer Tennys Sandgren from the USA. During this match, Federer performed an absolute miracle, saving - get this - seven match points and ultimately winning the match in five sets. It was truly amazing!

So what can you and I get from this Houdini-like performance? In this episode, I'll tell you about what I saw and learned from this match. So keep listening!

  • This week I have a super quick tip for you! This is in response to a great question that I got from a Tennis Quick Tips listener and I know it's a great question because I had this same question at one point in my tennis career. So let's talk about how to handle the volley aimed right at you in a way that not only protects you, but might also produce a playable shot to keep you in the point!

  • I'm sure you've heard it said many times - in doubles, the team that controls the net usually wins the point. But why is that? Have you thought about it much? It turns out that there are many reasons for doubles teams to get up to the net and try to take control of the point. In this episode, we'll talk about this "both up at the net" formation and why it is very, very often a great position to get yourself into when playing doubles.

  • I've got a question for you. How many of you are playing the one-up, one back formation when you play doubles? And why are you doing that? Have you thought about all of the pros and cons of the one up, one back formation? Because yes, there are pros AND cons. In this episode, we're talking about the most basic of all doubles formations - one up, one back. And we'll look at whether or not this is the best formation for playing out your doubles points.

  • Hey Tennis Quick Tips listeners! I'm so glad you are here and listening in to this episode. Because this is Part 2 of my two part mini-series called "The Life Lessons I Learned From My Big Tennis Break." Hopefully, you listened to Episode 175 already because that was Part 1 and in that episode I explained just how I was able to achieve complete and total tennis burnout back in the summer of 2017, right before my big two year break from tennis.

In this episode, I'm going to let you know how I got over my tennis burnout and how I came to love tennis again. So much so that I returned not just to playing tennis, but to talking about and writing about tennis, and to recording this podcast right here, Tennis Quick Tips. I'll also tell you what I learned about myself and how I continue to work on improving myself and living a better life. Because I have learned some pretty big lessons over the past year that I think are helping me to become a calmer, kinder, happier person, not just in my tennis life but in my life.

And I hope when you hear my story, you'll hear something that makes you think about yourself and your own game. I hope you'll hear something that will make you love tennis and want to continue playing and improving your game. And if you also hear something that becomes a life lesson for you, that's even better!

So, if you haven't already listened to the previous episode, Episode 175, I highly recommend you do so before you listen in to this episode. Because this one will make a lot more sense if you've already heard Part 1. And with that recommendation, let's get into Part 2 and talk about the big life lessons I learned from my big tennis break.

  • Well, here we are at the end of 2019 and here, at last, is the episode I've been promising. If you've been listening to this podcast in the last few months, you've heard me say that I was going to explain where I was and what I was doing in the two years that went by between Tennis Quick Tips Episode 164 and Episode 165. That's a pretty big gap and a lot happened during that time, not just in my tennis life, but in my life life. I learned a lot about myself during that time and I also found out just how big of an impact tennis has in my life.

So today, I'm going to talk about what happened during that two year gap and I'm ultimately going to tell you about what I learned about myself and about tennis. I'm going to tell you just how I came to love tennis again. Because it wasn't simple or easy to do. And I wasn't loving tennis at one time. And I'm going to tell you the big life lessons I learned that I am trying to apply to my tennis game now.

  • I have talked a lot in this podcast about talking on court - when you can do it, what you can say, what you can't say, and even what you should say. I've talked about what you should talk about with your partner and what you should and shouldn't say to your opponent. But I have never really talked about what you should NOT say to your partner. In this episode, I'll answer a listener question and make some recommendations on what you should NOT say to your doubles partner and how exactly to handle the moment when that communication comes up.

  • o you've joined a tennis team. Or you're on a team and you're starting to think about how to get more play time this season. What can you do, if anything, to make sure your captain puts you in the line-up again and again? Well, winning is one thing you can do of course. But believe it or not, there are several other things you can do to make sure your captain chooses you to play. In this episode, I'll give you a few tips on how to be a great tennis team member, the kind that gets to play every week.

  • There are lots and lots of tennis "one-liners" - little bits of tennis advice that are summarized in just one sentence. And a lot of times, they're actually great! They can be simple to understand and easy to apply. So how often have you heard this one? "Take the ball on the rise." Your tennis pro may have said that to you. Or maybe you've heard a commentator talking about a pro doing it during one of the Slams. And maybe you're already doing that - taking the ball on the raise. But maybe you're not. Maybe you've heard that one-liner and wondered - what the heck does that even mean, take the ball on the rise? And how do I do that? And why would I even do that? In this episode, we're talking about taking the ball on the rise and why you should try it out the next time you hit the tennis court.
