  • In this powerful episode of The Built Different Podcast, host Zach Clinton welcomes Ryan Dobson — speaker, author, son of Dr. James Dobson, and co-founder of REBEL Parenting. Ryan opens up about what it was like growing up in one of America’s most well-known Christian families, the pressure and privilege of following in his father’s footsteps, and how he found his own voice through years of struggle, growth, and raw honesty.

But this conversation goes deeper. Ryan shares the deeply personal journey of walking alongside his wife, Laura, as she battles cancer — and how their faith, marriage, and mission have been reshaped in the fire. As June marks Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, this episode offers a timely and tender reminder of the strength found in vulnerability, the power of presence, and the importance of knowing where to turn when life gets heavy.

Whether you’re a husband, a father, a son, or just someone looking for hope in the hard places — this episode is for you.

  • Are you tired of living life scared or following the status quo? Maybe it’s time we remembered what it felt like to believe in ourselves before the world told us who we should be and what we should do. In today’s conversation, we will explore the chasm between the dreams we once had and the reality in which we are now living. Speaking from personal experience, renowned speaker, best-selling author, and today’s guest, Dr. Heather Thompson Day dives deep into her newest book titled, What If I’m Wrong?, to help us better understand what makes us feel overwhelmed or defeated by the hopes we once had, the disappointments we should have overcome, the goals we expected to accomplish, and the person we wanted to be. Somehow and somewhere along the way, we stopped following our heart and started listening to the lies in our head: It’s time you gave up on that childish dream. What makes you think you could accomplish that? Others see who you really are, so stop trying to be someone else. So we decided to play it safe and just accept our lot in life. And instead of feeling alive every day, we walk through our days numb and uninspired. But today’s conversation will help you understand that pursuing a painless passion means you have an insignificant dream, living a “normal” life is scarier than taking risks and embracing the unknown, being vulnerable and admitting mistakes can lead to success quicker, embracing failure might be the best thing that ever happens to you, staying motivated and confident when things go wrong gets easier with practice, and the person God made you to be is waiting to live life to the fullest! As Dr. Heather says, “Have you ever considered that the hardest things in life might be our greatest areas of passion, through which we find fulfillment in everything we do, from work to play to relationships to our faith? Fears and failures come upon us like relentless waves, pulling us to deeper water. Panicked, we believe we are going to drown. But what if we’re wrong? Maybe God is teaching us how to swim stronger, to pursue greater adventures, and to learn how to really live!”

  • There’s no question that loneliness has become a global epidemic and is now being recognized as the invisible illness of our day and age. And the sad reality is that it’s always the undiagnosed illnesses that are the most dangerous and deadly. Dr. Mark Mayfield defines loneliness as: “The state of being unseen or unnoticed—relationally, emotionally, mentally, physically, or spiritually. It’s marked by a deep sense of hopelessness.”

And loneliness is more than just a feeling. It’s a disease pathway, meaning as loneliness increases, so do levels of anxiety, depression, substance use, and even suicide risk. According to a Cigna survey of over 20,000 adults: 54% felt no one truly knew them, 43% said their relationships didn’t feel meaningful, and 36% said they didn’t feel like they had anyone to turn to. Again, that’s not just concerning—it’s a crisis. Because no matter who you are, where you're from, or what you've been through, you were designed to be connected. For this reason as we are nearing the end of Mental Health Awareness Month, we are bringing on a very special guest who is an expert in human connection and leadership - Jordan Montgomery. Jordan is a USA Today bestselling author, renowned performance coach, and keynote speaker, trusted by elite business executives, sales teams, professional athletes, and entrepreneurs. Known for his dynamic presence and transformative insights, Jordan has shared the stage with countless luminaries such as Jon Gordon, John Maxwell, Angela Duckworth, and many others. Additionally, he and his wife, Ashley, lead Montgomery Companies, a powerhouse team of nationally recognized speakers and coaches. Whether in the boardroom or on the sports field, their team excels at helping leaders and teams reach peak performance. Their impressive client roster includes Fortune 500 companies like John Deere, Northwestern Mutual, and Principal Financial, as well as elite athletes, Olympians, and Super Bowl champions. In today’s conversation we will be discussing his most recent book, The Art of Encouragement, in order to help you more effectively lead with, serve, connect, and spread love with those you interact with.

  • Keisha Wright is a professional life coach from the Sunshine State of Florida, who like many others, spent her early years doing what she was “supposed” to do. She went to school, became a teacher, wife, and mother, and her life was seemingly normal, until it wasn’t. She went from working in the school system to raising a family and then, all of a sudden, she was faced with tragedy she didn’t know how to deal with. She then found herself in counseling and was told it was going to take 3-5 years to fully recover from her trauma. That’s when something within her changed. She thought to herself, “I can’t hang on that long, there must be a better way”. And in that moment of desperation, she remembers telling God “if you can get me out of this, I will dedicate the rest of my life to teaching others how to do the same.”

That’s when she was blessed with meeting a woman who offered to help her overcome her trauma. Throughout her healing journey this friend/coach taught Keisha the way forward and as she began doing the work, she ended up developing the foundations of the Emotional Recovery Clinic. Once healed, Keisha spent the next 12 years volunteering her time to help others recover, as well as establish her own practice, Women’s Recovery Clinic.  She spent her time traveling across the country teaching both women and men how to heal their trauma. Now, Keisha continues to uphold that same vision and mission as she jumps into life with others when their going gets tough and everything seems to be falling apart. Like her friend/coach did for her, she walks this journey of recovery with people until it becomes their new normal. Her purpose is clear: to teach you the way out, as none of us are born knowing how to put our lives back together.

  • I’ve heard it said that for people who are suicidal, it isn’t that they hate life, it’s that they hate life the way that it is. It’s not even about wanting to end their life, it’s about wanting to end their pain. But sadly, so many find themselves slipping to the point of brokenness where it seems so difficult or at times impossible to see an opportunity for change or a brighter tomorrow. Today’s guest has a similar story of  wanting the pain to stop in his own life! After a difficult upbringing and some challenging moments in his own personal life, Casey Temple, found himself pulling the trigger with every intention of ending his life. BUT GOD had different plans! Rather escaping the pain, Jesus brought him purpose, hope, and healing in the midst of it! Through Recovery Alive, a revolutionary church-based response to human brokenness, rooted in the power, people, and process of the Christ-centered 12 steps, Casey found the freedom he always longed for! Now getting to serve as the Chief Operating Officer of Recovery Alive, Casey can say with complete confidence that God has radically transformed his life, addictions, and testimony. We are excited to share his journey with you, with the hope that it will be a steadfast reminder to you that it is NEVER too late, and there is ALWAYS hope!

  • In the words of today’s guest, none other than President & Chief Visionary Officer of Proverbs 31 Ministries, Renowned Speaker, & Best-Selling Author, Lysa Terkeurst, “The last several years have been the hardest of my life. I know the depths of marital heartbreak, and what it feels like to wrestle through healing. I also know what it feels like to be diagnosed with cancer and to wonder why God would allow so much heartbreak. My pillow has seen its fair share of tears. But I’ve also seen God move in astounding ways… not always the ways I thought He would, but I guess that’s why we are called to follow Him with faith. And at the end of each day, that’s what you’ll find me doing — going to bed while saying thankful prayers for ways I once again experienced God’s faithfulness that day, big and small. I wish with every fiber of my heart that I could erase parts of my story. But staying stuck in trying to wish something away will cause me to miss the beauty of what is… and even better… trusting God for what can be.” We hope and pray that today’s conversation would help you navigate the pain of betrayal while clinging to the hope of the gospel. Although not easy - forgiveness, boundaries, and trust are skills that can be learned and developed again!

  • Today’s episode is different. It’s raw. It’s real. And honestly — it’s probably one of the most vulnerable conversations we’ve ever had on this show. Because our guest is Carl Lentz. Maybe you’ve already formed opinions. Maybe the first thing that comes to mind is scandal, failure, or church hurt. I get that. But what you’ll hear today isn’t a defense. It’s not image rehab. It’s not hype or spin. It’s a man who hit rock bottom — spiritually, emotionally, relationally — and lived to tell the story. Carl doesn’t sugarcoat the pain. He talks about the darkness that followed his fall. The shame. The wreckage. The long, hard work of rebuilding not a brand, but a soul. And not on a stage — but in the quiet, often brutal daily battle of showing up and doing the next right thing. He talks about godly sorrow, not just regret. About reverence, not image. About waking up every day and saying, “I can’t change the past, but I can let God change me.” You’ll hear about marriage, redemption, identity, fatherhood, faith, and the fight to become someone new when the old you has already burned to the ground. So if you’ve ever thought failure disqualifies you from the love of God, that it’s too late, too far gone, to broken to find your way back home – I want you to lean in. Because this isn’t a comeback story. This is a resurrection story. And our hope and prayer is that you would be reminded in and through this episode that you could never outsin God’s grace or outrun His love! If you've ever felt like your past disqualifies you, or that your darkest day is the end of your story, I pray this episode shows you otherwise. Because again, this conversation isn’t about cleaning up your image. It’s about owning your story — and letting God do something redemptive with even the most broken pieces.

  • Depression, anxiety, and emotional trauma are on the rise, even more so after the painful few years we’ve all been through. While the church has had an unfortunate track record of glossing over mental health issues, Paul Daugherty, pastor of the megachurch Victory and today’s guest on the podcast, believes it’s time for the church to break its silence. You can’t just pray trauma away. Depression and anxiety can affect even the most devoted believer. Therefore, in today’s conversation, Paul sits down with hosts, Zach & Josh, to share his own story of walking through anxiety and depression, helping others understand how frightening and debilitating mental health struggles can be, and talking vulnerably about the highs and lows of his healing journey. He also describes some of the biggest mental and emotional health issues he has seen people in his life and his congregation facing, including depression, anxiety, insecurity, mood swings, and the scars of trauma. Daugherty dives into scripture and lays a framework for understanding the spiritual truths behind each mental battle, and offers practical tips and strategies to help readers discover the door out of depression and into mental and emotional victory. The greatest takeaway from today’s conversation is that you may already have possession of the key to the door of hope and healing that you’ve been searching for all along!

  • On June 4th, 2019, country music singer Granger Smith was enjoying a final evening with his kids before heading to Nashville for the CMT Music Awards and his next tour. While helping his daughter London with her gymnastics, his youngest son fell into their pool. Granger did everything he could to get to him, but he was too late. River drowned, and Granger's world shattered. The days, weeks, and months that followed River's death sent Granger on a dark and painful journey. Every time he closed his eyes, he replayed the horrific event in his mind, and every time he opened his computer, he was bombarded by the critique and criticism of people who blamed him for the accident. Despite his best effort to get back on stage with a smile and song, it was all a façade. On the inside he was dying. Fortunately, that's not how his story ended. And now he is compelled to help people all around the world find strength, peace, and hope on the other side of tragedy. Tune in today to hear a heartfelt, tear-jerking, and vulnerable conversation as Granger reveals the messy path and process of mourning, yet also the ways in which God has met him in the midst of his mess time and time again.

  • Joining us today on the podcast is a man the country fell in love with during the Ohio State football team’s National Championship run, TreVeyon Henderson. Time after time, when the pressure was on, TreVeyon along with his OSU teammates stepped up and performed on the field, but more importantly spoke up and shed a light on thier unwavering faith in their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Further, he was even more recently drafted as the 38th overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft to the New England Patirots where he looks forward to what god has in store for this next season of life. However, life hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows for TreVeyon. Like all of us, he is no stranger to suffering being raised in Hopewell, VA and battling depression, anxiety, sleep paralysis, and suicidal ideation. But by the grace of God, when he met Jesus, everything changed! Throughout today’s conversation you’ll be encouraged by TreVeyon’s testimony as well as his heart and passion for the Lord and some of the lessons he’s learned along the way. Above all else, TreVeyon wants one message to ring loud and clear - true VICTORY can only be found in JESUS!

  • What does it truly mean to worship God? Worship in its purest form has simply been described as reverence and adoration for the Lord. One can actually be going through one of the most difficult times or seasons of their life, but still, come to God in reverence and adoration for WHO He is. Therefore, the worship we ought to bring should not be dependent on whether or not we’ve had a bad day or a bad life journey thus far. We are called to come to Him as we are, in our brokenness – with our “broken hallelujahs”. Joining us today to take a deeper dive into how we can experience the presence of God through the power of worship is one of the most well-known and renowned musicians and worship leaders of our day, Mack Brock! Mack has written and sang countless number 1 songs that so many of us play over the loud speakers of our cars and sing during Church! But today Mack discusses with us how worship has carried him through some of the most difficult times and seasons of his own personal life. Yes, worship is more than just a song. Our prayer is that that no matter what you may be going through, that after listening to this episode you would begin developing a heart postered toward worship for the days ahead.

  • Many think of Easter as the day with eggs, bunnies, and chocolate candies, but in reality this day commemorates a day that changed everything! For this is a day where the tomb was found empty that now over 2 billion people around the world come together to reflect on, remember, and celebrate a Risen Savior, the Risen Christ! 1 Peter 1:3 says, "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." You see, the resurrection is the pillar and the foundation of our faith!! A day that reminds us, not only did Christ defeat sin by paying the ultimate sacrifice for our sins through a substitutionary death on the cross, but then by rising again 3 days later He defeated death, providing each and every one of us the opportunity to spend eternal life with HIM. By rising from the dead, Jesus Christ demonstrated that He had cleansed the guilt of our past and is able to help and walk alongside of us in our present. His resurrection provides us with an ever-present HOPE assuring us that our future is safe and secure. You see, the empty tomb is proof of Christ's deity, and it guarantees the future resurrection of His believers, those who have been saved. Romans 10:9 says, that “If you declare with your mouth that “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved! However, many remain puzzled and confused asking questions such as, “Why did Jesus have to die?” or “Why did He have to die in that way?” or even “How do we know that the tomb was empty?” or lastly “If the tomb really was empty, how then should we live our lives?” Thankfully today we have Senior Pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church and Chancellor of Liberty University, Jonathan Falwell here to unpack all of these questions as he so elequently simplifies the good news of the gospel for us all to understand! Remember, Easter is not simply a moment or a part of history – Easter is the meaning and the point of history…  Easter isn’t just about one day – the message of Easter is a lifestyle that we can live with every moment of every day! Happy Easter!

  • If there is one word that sums up Kirk Cousins, it’s CONSISTENCY. On the field, Kirk is one of the most efficient passers in NFL history, tallying 42,979 passing yards and 288 touchdowns leaving him 6th all-time in completion % for QBs with at least 1,500 pass attempts and 11th in the NFL’s all-time regular-season career passer rating. However, the most impressive thing in our eyes is that no matter what result Kirk experiences on the field, he consistently displays his devotion to both his faith and his family. Yes, he’s an NFL veteran QB, but more importantly he’s a man on a mission to share the good news of the gospel and to be a beacon of hope, light, and love to a dark and hurting world. Tune in to today’s conversation as Zach and Kirk unpack the last several years of Kirk’s journey, specifically this last year and what it’s like to once again be faced with the challenge of the unknown. As Kirk mentions, “I may not know what the future holds, but I do know WHO holds my future.” Be inspired today to hear how sometimes looking back can be the best way to move forward as it’s the practice of remembrance that often fuels our level of confidence and resilience for the road ahead!

  • Music has taken Ben Fuller’s life and made it into something he never would have dreamed. Growing up in Southern Vermont on his family dairy farm, he learned about hard work and a passion he saw first-hand from his father. He started singing at a young age to pass the time in the fields and on the farm. The singing never stopped and somewhere between the farm and college, he picked up a guitar and played all those country covers he learned as a boy. Realizing, he had a voice, his friends urged him to move to Nashville to pursue a career in country music. For over a year, he had friends and family pushing him to pack up his things and go.

What no one knew is that Ben had a secret addiction to drugs and alcohol and had been abusing for over 12 years. In 2015, Ben was involved in a drug-fueled relationship which led him to understand better, the other side of the disease. In addition, in 2017, he abruptly lost his best friend to a drug overdose and his entire outlook on life shifted.

Motivated to change, in 2018 he finally moved to Nashville still having country music in his head with the notion he just had to “make it” in country music. Little did he know his music would change drastically after a family invited him to church for the first time. Falling face first into God, he began writing new music noticing his lyrics started taking on new meaning. His new-found relationship with Jesus led him to begin writing with a burning desire to share the love of God and tell the world his redemption story. Now completely sober, he longs to help individuals who struggle with addiction and are looking for something more in which to fill their empty souls. Today, his heart continues to fill with stories of loss, hope and love as he travels across our country to sing his story as well as the stories of those who can no longer.
