In this episode of the Clinicianâs Corner, we dive into the very important but less-discussed topic of hormone health and fitness for women over 50. At the age of 56, Debra Atkinson - a renowned hormone-balancing fitness expert - discovered the importance of tailoring fitness to the hormonal and metabolic needs of women, especially in midlife. This episode exposes the stark lack of research focused on women in exercise science, a gap Debra has observed firsthand. Her insights demonstrate not only how adept she is in this niche field, but how well she understands the nuances of working with women during a life stage that is constantly in flux.
We discuss:
Common myths about exercise and calorie-burning
How bioindividual a fitness program needs to be in order to be effective
Practical considerations for how to customize an exercise strategy just like we would the diet or a supplement protocol
The impact of high-intensity interval training versus strength training
Why cutting back can sometimes mean gaining more when it comes to fitness
Specific challenges that women face as they approach menopause and how factors like stress, nutrition, and rest play critical roles in shaping their fitness journeys
