  • Today's guest is Paul Gray of Omdia. Paul leads Omdia’s home devices research, which spans television sets, smart homes, consumer electronics, and domestic appliances. His main research area is TV sets, focusing on the European region, broadcast technology, smart TV, and new TV features. Paul is also heavily engaged in researching the development of the Ultra HD ecosystem. Paul first joined Omdia more than 15 years ago. With over 30 years of experience in the TV set supply chain working for NXP and Philips in semiconductors and displays, Paul continues to research the TV business. Among others, Paul has been cited by the Financial Times, Korea Times, Korea Daily, Nikkei, and Le Monde. Paul holds a degree in electrical engineering and a diploma in industrial studies.

     

    In this episode, Paul and Brian talked about how the viewing experience is more important than specsmanship, lifestyle effects on viewing patterns, differences between the European markets versus North America, what vinyl records have in common with displays, and the fact that viewers watch content, not screens.

  • Today's guest is Takatoshi Tsujimura, who is the most recent past-president of the Society for Information Display and is Technology Fellow at Konica Minolta in Tokyo, Japan.   • Today's guest is Ross Young. In this episode, Ross and Brian discuss the new technologies shown at SID Display Week 2022 right from the show floor. Ross Young is co-founder and CEO of DSCC. Previously, he started, ran and sold DisplaySearch which he started with less than $500 in capital and grew to over $10M in revenues. He has also worked throughout the display supply chain including at a TV brand, panel supplier, multiple equipment suppliers and a materials supplier.

  • Today’s guest is Dr. Eric Virey. In this episode, Eric and Brian discussed Mini-LED and especially MicroLED displays. They covered the definition of mini versus microLEDs, the importance of microLEDs to Apple and their disruptive approach to microLED displays, the Cambrian Explosion in technology including QD-microLEDs, and microLED display adoption trends and product forecasts. MicroLED displays are a hot topic in the display industry and there are very few people in the world who know more about this field than Eric Virey. Eric serves as a Senior Display Market and Technology Analyst at Yole Développement. Since 2009, Eric has contributed to numerous custom projects in the LED, sapphire and display industries and has authored multiple market reports. Eric has spoken at more than 25 industry conferences and has been interviewed or quoted by: The Wall Street Journal, CNN, Fox News, CNBC, Bloomberg, Forbes, MIT’s Technology Review, and Photonic Spectra. Prior to Yole, he held various R&D, engineering, manufacturing and marketing positions with Saint-Gobain in France and the United States. Eric received his PhD in Optoelectronics from the National Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble.

    Today, we’re going to be talking about Samsung’s new QD-Display, which was introduced at CES in January in new products from Dell, Samsung and Sony. Sometimes called "QD-OLED," Samsung's new QD-Display technology combines the Quantum Dots with OLED technology to create a new category of display.

    This month's guest is Chirag Shah of Samsung Display. Chirag is speaking to us from South Korea, where he leads the go-to-market team for QD-Display at Samsung Display Company. He is a graduate of Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management as well as an Electrical Engineer from Georgia Tech, and he’s passionate about bringing new technology to market. Chirag lives in Seoul with his wife and two boys. When not tinkering with tech, he loves to recreate ancient tandoori recipes in the kitchen.

  • Today’s guest is Florian Friedrich. Florian lives and works in the Munich area of Germany, where he is CEO of his company, FF Pictures. He is an expert on display testing, color grading, and high dynamic range technology just to name a few areas. Among many roles, he is chair of the HDR Subcommittee of the ICDM. Prior to FF Pictures, he ran an ISO-certified test laboratory, AVTOP, for about 20 years. Florian has collaborated with measurement device manufacturers such as Teledyne and Quantum Data, he’s HDR-remastered over two dozen movies, and he has unique understanding of display requirements for modern content.

    About Michael Zink

    Michael is responsible for exploring emerging technologies to enhance Warner’s storytelling capabilities across different platforms. His work includes assessing the latest technologies, developing innovative experiences, and integrating new solutions into creative production workflows. Michael started with Warner Brothers in 2014, and he is the first representative of the content creation community to join us on the Display Show. Prior to joining Warner, he was at Technicolor Incorporated for over ten years, where among other roles he was Vice President of Technology Strategy. Earlier in his career, Michael worked for several media production facilities in Germany. In addition to his VP role at Warner, Michael is also President and Chairman of the UHD Alliance, and as of this year he is Education Vice President at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, or SMPTE for short.   • Episode 12 features Paul Gagnon, Senior Research Director for Consumer Devices at Omdia. Paul has had a long-term focus on the TV market among other areas. At Omdia, he leads a team of analysts who study the consumer electronics and digital signage industries.

    In this episode Paul and Brian discuss what's important to consumers, premium market, and migration of features to the mainstream. The two also touch on how in terms of the display industry, recent past performance is not a guarantee of future results.

  • The DisplayWeek episode features special guest Jason Hartlove, President and CEO of Nanosys. Jason and Brian go way back, long before Jason took over the reins at Nanosys. The two talk about developing the world’s first optical mouse, discussed life in Korea, and focus on the significant role that quantum dots play in the display industry today.

  • Roland Wooster joins Brian Berkeley for an update on VESA's popular DisplayHDR certification program. DisplayHDR has been used to certify the HDR performance of over 600 PC, monitor and notebook products to date. Roland shares some of the history of the HDR certification efforts within VESA, the most recent updates to DisplayHDR version 1.1, and what to look for in future versions.

    Roland works at Intel, where he is Principal Engineer and Display & Platform Technologist within Intel’s Client Domain Architecture and Strategy Group. Among other activities, Roland is quite active in display standardization. Roland has a leadership role at VESA, where he serves as chairman of their High Dynamic Range task group. That group has developed and released the “DisplayHDR” criteria.

  • Today’s guest is Bob O’Brien, who is co-founder and president of Display Supply Chain Consultants, or DSCC for short. Bob has decades of experience in the display and electronics industries. At DSCC, he has the lead role in analysis of display materials, and in coverage of TV and other large-screen display applications. Prior to DSCC, Bob worked for Corning for over a decade, working as Corning’s Director of Market Intelligence and Strategy. In fact, that’s when we first met. Bob also worked at Philips and LG-Philips Displays. He has a BS in Physics from Cornell and an MBA from the University of Michigan. For those of us who have been around SID, Bob’s face is quite familiar as he has been active in the industry for many years.

  • The Display Show is back and we're kicking off our new season with a very special guest: Silicon Valley legend Regis McKenna! This episode covers early Silicon Valley, Apple, Intel and the state of tech marketing today. Brian and Regis both spent time at Apple in the 1980's and 90's– Regis was the first marketing person at Apple while Brian worked on the original Mac and brought color to the Mac with the Macintosh II.     For many or most of us, Regis needs no introduction. He is well known for his vast marketing and public relations expertise, as well as his high-profile contributions to major corporations here in Silicon Valley. Just to name a few, he helped Intel market the world’s first microprocessor, he guided Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and other Apple executives through Apple’s formation and growth phases, and he helped Genentech roll out their first recombinant DNA genetically-engineered product. Other companies who turned to Regis for his Marketing and PR expertise include Electronic Arts, Compaq, Microsoft, National Semiconductor, SpectraPhysics, Silicon Graphics, 3Com, and a host of others. Among various companies he advises today, he is a board member of Nanosys, who is sponsoring these talks. Regis has received many awards and it is safe to say that he is a major part of Silicon Valley folklore.

  • Today’s guest is Reza Chaji, who is Founder and CEO of VueReal, whose goal is to make nanotechnology scalable and among other things, holds potential for commercialization of micro-LED technology. Dr. Chaji is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo. He has past experience at IGNIS Innovation where he was President and CTO, and he is well-known around SID where he’s given many technical talks and where he’s been an active participant for many years.

  • Today, we’re speaking with Dr. Euan Smith, who comes to us from the UK. Dr. Smith is a technologist specializing in photonics, displays, imaging, algorithms, and web technologies. He has over 20 years’ experience in these industries and is an author on over 160 patents covering everything from OLED driving, optics, image processing, and touch technologies. Euan and Brian are fellow experts on the IEC displays standardization committee, TC110. Dr. Smith is the lead author of a Distinguished Paper being presented this week at SID 2020, paper 50.2. It is a landmark publication related to the evaluation of electronic display color capability.

  • Today’s guest is Max McDaniel, who is Chief Marketing Officer of Applied Materials Display and Flexible Technology Group. He has held engineering, marketing and financial management roles in high-tech equipment companies for over 25 years. Mr. McDaniel has been at Applied Materials since 2003. Prior to joining Applied Materials he served over twelve years at Watkins-Johnson, a Semiconductor and LCD equipment manufacturer, where he worked in R&D, engineering, and marketing roles.

  • Today, Aaron Dew of TCL joins Brian Berkeley for a discussion about technology, consumers and TV market trends. Aaron is the Director of Product Development at TCL, where he spends his days obsessing over how to deliver a better home theater experience. When he isn’t planted in front of a TV at work, he enjoys watching TV at home! His TCL Roku TV is always streaming Game of Thrones, telenovelas, and kids’ channels on YouTube. It is also interesting to note that prior to joining TCL he has worked at Vizio, LG Electronics and Sony so he brings experience from a majority of the major TV brands.
