  • In this episode, Dr. Mike and Nicole Goldfarb, an orofacial myofunctional therapist, dive deep into pediatric airway health and sleep-disordered breathing. This is the first episode in a collaborative series called Airway Conversations which has the goal of spreading awareness and educating providers and parents on the topic of pediatric airway health.

This episode emphasizes the importance of early detection and treatment of pediatric sleep-disordered breathing, challenges the notion that orthodontics and airway issues are not interconnected, and reviews the stance of both the American Dental Association (ADA) and American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) on the topic.

Dr. DeLuke and Nicole critique existing dental guidelines and highlight the significance of recognizing symptoms such as crowded teeth, a narrow palate, altered facial growth, myofunctional disorders, behavioral issues, and neurocognitive defects in pediatric patients.

They also discuss the role that dental professionals can and should play in the detection and treatment of pediatric sleep-disordered breathing, and encourage parents to seek out knowledgeable practitioners who have an understanding of the implications of mouth breathing and snoring.

Future episodes of the Airway Conversations series will cover related topics such as tooth extraction, orthodontic techniques to expand and develop the arches, and how parents can go about finding airway-aware orthodontists.

  • Earlier this year, I got to sit on the other side of the microphone and be interviewed by my daughter, Kendall! As part of her ACE General Paper class, Kendall had to select someone to interview to learn more about their live story and journey and she chose me! So we figured we’d record it and let everyone hear our conversation!

With the Holidays upon us, I figured it was a good episode to repost as a reminder to focus on family, faith, and constantly working to grow and become your best self.

I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! See you in the New Year!

[My apologies on the audio - there was an issue with Kendall's mic]

Here’s some of what you’ll learn in this episode:

    · Why I became an orthodontist.

    · The reasons why I decided to open my own practice right out of my residency.

    · The resources I used to learn how to run a business.

    · How I became involved in airway orthodontics and using braces and wires to expand/develop the arches of younger children.

    · The impact that changing lives with airway-focused orthodontic treatment had on me.

    · The struggle I faced after firing my associate 3 weeks into his employment.

    · How I transitioned from running a successful private practice to teaching and coaching full-time, and the role that the COVID-19 shutdown played in this.

    · Why we picked up our family and moved from Upstate NY to Florida in 2021, the challenges we faced, and how we’re doing now.

    · Whether I have any regrets about leaving private practice to teach full-time.

    · The importance of having a vision of the type of person you want to be and the type of life you want to live.

    · The role that faith has played in my personal and professional journey.

  • Money, retirement, wealth, prosperity. All terms we are familiar with but do any of us know how to achieve them? That is why I wanted to have my friend and colleague, Dr. Mart McClellan on the show. Mart is an orthodontist AND a financial advisor and he is a wealth (pun intended 😊) of knowledge. He will share how he feels all of us can achieve financial prosperity both pre-and post-retirement.

    We discuss:

    · What motivated Mart to pursue a career in financial advisement while he was practicing orthodontics full-time.

    · How a conference Mart went to as a resident changed his perspective on money.

    · What to do about debt, including student loan debt, mortgage debt, consumer debt, etc.

    · If Dave Ramsey has the right idea by recommending to aggressively pay down debt.

    · Whether to get a 15-year or 30-year mortgage.

    · Ways to change your mindset towards money.

    · The importance of setting goals for your financial future.

    · The flaws with the traditional financial model.

    · How to get off the traditional linear model of accumulating wealth and accelerate your wealth curve.

    · The importance of thinking about how to distribute your assets, not just accumulate them.

    · Who the “rulesmakers” are and how they attack our money 365 days/year.

    · The percentage of your earnings that you should be saving every year.

    · What a “Wealth Freedom Account” is and why you need one.

    · If you need an Emergency Fund and, if so, how much to put in it.

    · Which is more important, a savings rate or a rate of return.

    · The difference between “new money” and “old money” when it comes to investing.

    · Why we don’t believe in “evidence-based financial planning.”

    · What a “diversified portfolio” really means, and what it is not.

    · When to expect the next downturn in the real estate market.

    · The difference between average rate of return and annualized rate of return, and which is more important.

    · How many different income streams wealthy people typically have.

    · Whether or not you should fund a retirement plan.

    · Mart’s thoughts on the “Die with Zero” mentality.

    · What can be done to help students/residents get a better financial education.

    · Strategies for older docs can do to maximize their retirement income.

    · And much more!
