In this episode, we discuss how yoga can be a powerful tool for nervous system regulation, particularly for therapists and their clients dealing with trauma and anxiety. Amanda, a mental health therapist and yoga instructor, shares her journey into yoga and offers practical insights into bringing yoga into the therapy room. She highlights the importance of an intuitive approach and provides a hands-on yoga practice to help you experience the benefits firsthand. Amanda also discusses the integration of various therapeutic theories with yoga, emphasizing the role of self-care and the therapist's own nervous system regulation.
MEET Amanda Baker
Amanda believes that we are more authentic as our child-like selves than we are as an adult. We are more likely to share our truth and live our truth as children, but who says we have to stop? Amanda is a mental health therapist, 500hr yoga instructor, and poet. She integrates mental health, yoga, creativity, and writing into her work and daily life. Amanda has worked in the clinical field of social work for over 10 years and in the last five she has utilized yoga psychology as a framework for treating mental health diagnoses, symptoms, and mind-body restoration. Amanda came back to her child-like passions just before the pandemic as she embarked on basic yoga teaching training and writing poetry daily. She loved music, dance, and writing as a kid. In coming back to self with her interests she stumbled on the healing benefits of these inner resources in self. Your mind, your body, and your heart. Amanda offers therapeutic yoga workshops, classes, and one-on-one therapy in Baltimore, MD. She also has two published poetry books, entitled ASK: A Collection of Poetry, Lyrics, and Words as well as "What Is Another Word for Intimacy" which can be found on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Yellow Arrow Publishing. In this episode of 'Yoga in the Therapy Room,’ Chris interviews Leah Barnes. Leah shares her unique approach to incorporating yoga into therapy sessions and explains how she introduces yoga to clients, the types of practices she uses, and the benefits it offers, especially for those with ADHD and trauma. The episode also covers the importance of keeping practices trauma-informed and tailored to individual clients' needs. Listeners will gain insights and practical advice on how to safely and ethically integrate yoga into their therapy practice. Leah also guides a short, mindful cat-cow exercise to demonstrate its grounding effects.
MEET Leah Barnes
Leah Barnes, LCMHCS, is the owner of Ridgeline Counseling and Supervision, PLLC where she provides online therapy to adults in North and South Carolina. She focuses on working with late-diagnosed or suspected Autistic and ADHD adults to get rid of internalized shame and ableism surrounding their neurotype, and learn ways to work with their brain, not against it. In addition to traditional weekly therapy, she offers therapy intensives to help clients dig deep into healing over the course of 1 to 3 days. She uses a variety of approaches during intensives, such as brainspotting, polyvagal techniques, therapeutic yoga, parts work, and more.
"‘It fits so naturally because we are talking about how the nervous system responds and how we get somebody back into a regulated state. Many of those somatic techniques that we use are very similar to yoga, if not identical and so it just fits so well.’" -Leah Barnes

In this episode, we explore therapists' challenges in integrating yoga into their practice and embracing a new identity as a yogi. We will discuss professional boundaries, cultural considerations, client misconceptions, and building competence and confidence. We will also look at practical advice, such as starting with breathwork, creating personal yoga practices, and seeking support within the therapist community. I will share personal experiences and encourage therapists to adopt a gradual approach to help them integrate yoga and therapy.
"As therapists, we often focus on guiding our clients towards healing, self-discovery, and the present moment awareness. Yoga can offer us a unique opportunity to do that with clients, to help them connect deeply with their own bodies, minds, and spirits, and to bring that sense of grounding and authenticity into our therapeutic work." -Chris McDonald

In this episode, I will address the myths and misconceptions surrounding the integration of yoga into clinical therapy sessions. We will discuss the common belief that yoga is just about physical exercise and stretches and delve into its broader mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits. This episode will debunk myths such as requiring those practicing to be naturally flexible and its supposed religious connotations. We also discuss the evidence-based benefits of yoga, the ethical considerations for integrating it into therapy, and the importance of personal practice for therapists.
"You cannot be an effective teacher of yoga, even as a therapist, unless you are doing yoga. You must feel these practices. You must really be connected to your body, noticing sensations, and how they feel in your body, in order to be effective.” - Chris McDonald

What is ketamine therapy and how does it work? How can you go beyond talk therapy to treat depression, anxiety, and PTSD?
MEET Austin & Candace
Austin Francom is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). He started his work in health care at Volunteers of America social detox and the University of Utah’s Neuropsychiatric Institute while obtaining undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Sociology.
After starting a nursing career, with experience largely in mental health and critical care, he earned a master’s degree in nursing from Westminster College. He has been practicing in the Salt Lake Valley in primary care since 2013.
Candace Curzon graduated from the University of Utah in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, and in 2012 with a Master of Social Work. She worked at the University of Utah’s Neuropsychiatric Institute as a member of their crisis team and as a therapist on the inpatient psychiatric unit at LDS Hospital.
While working at LDS Hospital, she saw excellent results with Ketamine treatment for severe depression, OCD, and suicidal ideation. Realizing she wanted to do deeper work with clients beyond the initial crisis of being in the hospital, she opened Ally Counseling in 2016.
Candace and Austin have both trained in Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). They have also trained through the Ketamine Training Center by Phil Wolfsen, who is the leading researcher on Ketamine and Ketamine Assisted Therapy. Together, Austin and Candace began Ketamine Therapy at Therapeutic Alternatives in February 2019. They believe that Ketamine therapy could be safely and effectively administered in a setting that is less clinical, more welcoming, and safe. They set out to create a clinic that reflected this belief that inviting and comfortable surroundings could foster a more ideal environment for healing to happen.

After earning a master’s degree in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Duke University, she opened her first private practice – BeWellNC – which she owned and operated for 10 years. During that time, she also served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and was a contracting provider at the UNC WakeBrook Crisis and Assessment Service in Raleigh. In 2020, Dr. Best was invited to become a Program Lead for the cutting-edge startup Modern Minds, a novel mental health and wellness clinic affiliated with the Medical University of South Carolina. She moved to Charleston, where she also served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in MUSC's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. After ensuring that Modern Minds was on stable footing, Dr. Best returned to her entrepreneurial roots and opened her second private practice, Dr. Stephanie Best LLC. An expert practitioner of mindfulness- and acceptance-based interventions – including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – Dr. Best has advanced training in mindfulness and completed an intensive course in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) at Duke Integrative Medicine. She is among the most highly certified trainers affiliated with the NeuroMeditation Institute in Eugene, Oregon and enjoys teaching others about the use of neuroscience-based principles and strategies to individualize the practice of meditation for optimal health and wellness. Dr. Best has maintained regular yoga and meditation practices of her own for over two decades, sustained by her direct personal experience of their empirically supported mental, emotional, and physical health benefits. She is dually licensed in both North and South Carolina and is a long-time member of the North Carolina Psychological Association, for whom she is proud to serve as the Federal Advocacy Coordinator. Outside of work, Dr. Best's heart lights up when she is scuba diving (or communing with Mother Ocean in any form), listening to live music, taking nature walks, playing piano, rooting for her beloved Tar Heels, and spending quality time with family and friends.
