Episodes

  • The second instalment of the NFA Convention Series is out and I am spoiling you all rotten!

This week’s guest is soloist, University of Iowa professor, recording artist and all-round flute superstar; Nicole Esposito.

I’ve been a fan of Nicole’s for 13 (!) years and I finally got to meet her and record a wee episode together. She chats about everything from how she judges competitions and her impressive NFA stats to her two recent flute and harp albums and studying with some of the greatest female flutists in US music history (amongst many other things).

It’s a brilliant episode, I enjoyed this so much and I know you lot will too, you lucky wee ducks.

  • From jägerbombs to secret parties, and stellar guests to plastic babies; this week’s podcast reflects on my time at the NFA Annual Flute Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

I look at all the things the NFA got right, my own personal scandals, the cultural differences in the US, a hot take that will kill all my sponsorship chances and finally; why you should join me next year in Atlanta.

(There’s also a wee rant against Woodify and other related snake-oil products, sorry I got carried away x)

  • Fresh off the plane from the US, this week’s episode is one of several recorded at the NFA Convention in sickly humid San Antonio, Texas. Kicking us off from across the pond is my friend and yours, Scottish flute superstar Stephen Clark.

I haven’t seen Stephen in near 10 years, so this was just a lovely wee catch up that happened to be filmed where we chatted about cultural differences between the US and UK flute worlds, daily challenges for gigging musicians, keeping your trousers on whilst bowing and the musical stylings of Cyndi Lauper.

  • Is there truly an American School of Flute Playing, similar to that of France, or is it purely said French School with an American accent?

I haven’t got the answer yet, but come join me as I trace the origins of American Flute Playing back to a Frenchman, which then passed through William Kincaid, Joseph Mariano and Julius Baker, to a potential tradition of American Flute Playing.

  • This week’s episode comes fresh off the press from the Luxembourg Philharomie with orchestral flute superstar, former Kobe Flute Competition Winner, Jolivet aficionado and super-mom; Hélène Boulègue.

I’ve been a fan of Hélène for years now, so getting to sit down with her to chat about her career, social media and most strikingly, motherhood was a legit privilege.

If you only watch one part of this episode, skip ahead to the chapter on motherhood; especially if you’re a fella.

  • The Punk Ethos is defined by anti-authoritarian and anti-establishment views, carried out in a DIY fashion. Is there anyone in Classical Music truly doing this, or is elitism too deeply ingrained in the culture?

I explore the roots of punk, the differences between punk as a genre and as an ethos, and finally I give my 3 favourite classical music “punks.”

  • The flute podcasting world is a rapidly growing one, but there’s one podcast that’s stood the test of time; the reliable stalwart of consistent excellence that is Talking Flutes. I’ve been a fan since the early days, and without it, Inline G wouldn’t exist. So it brings me great pleasure to FINALLY twist the arm of host Jean-Paul Wright into coming on here and giving us the crossover younger Gareth dreamed of.

Not only a podcaster, Jean-Paul is also the Managing Director of Trevor James Flutes, having previously worked with Sankyo and Miyazawa, as well as being a trailblazer in the field of musician’s mental health.

This is a lovely, positive episode talking about validity as musicians, what art means to us and how to look after ourselves. It also has some of the best anecdotes Inline G has ever seen; including the origin story of the red socks, told publicly for the first time ever.

  • Inline G return’s to it’s roots this week; hungover with a world-class flutist, sipping on a Spezi and chatting about all the big issues of the flute world.

One of my personal best mates, French superstar orchestral musician and soloist Alice Brie was in town, and after a long night of Guinness until 4am, we emerged at 11am for a podcast.

Alice chats about everything from her experiences as a child prodigy, studying at the CNSM as a teenager, her orchestral debut at l’Opéra de Paris at just 18, right through to French v German tonguing and the role kindness plays to becoming better musicians.

  • After I waxed lyrical on Episode 28 of this podcast about Julien Beaudiment’s latest album, “California Dreamin’”, it was an inevitability that I would coax him on here. He found himself in Sunny Köln whilst on tour with The London Symphony Orchestra recently, and thus here we are.

Julien and I chatted about his time in orchestras in The UK, France and The US, as well as his nervousness before concerts, a shared love of apfelschorle and inevitably; The French Flute School.

There’s also an incredibly special sneak peak of Julien’s upcoming solo album at the very end of the episode. I can’t stress how lucky you guys are to hear this first; a true Inline G exclusive.

  • On the 12th April of this year, Vulture magazine published an article entitled “A Hidden Sexual Assault Scandal at the New York Philharmonic.”

It details an alleged sexual misconduct case from 2010, and the various related ongoings since then.

I am delighted to welcome the author of this landmark piece, Sammy Sussman, on to Inline G to talk about it, the various reactions and the potential implications for the classical music world.

Please also be aware that this episode contains descriptions of abuse, which some may find triggering.

This was a landmark episode, and I am thrilled that guests of this calibre feel comfortable to tell their story on Inline G.

  • Coming to you fresh from the Emerald Isle herself, this week’s episode features the the Principal Flute of The National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland (and proud fellow owner of an Irish accent); Catriona Ryan.

After a few Instagram DMs, Catriona managed to squeeze me into her exceptionally busy schedule after a rehearsal to sit down together in the National Concerto Hall in Dublin and chat all things flute.

From platinum Brannens and the importance of Orchestral Blending to a shared admiration of irish trad players and String, this episode has a wee something for everyone.

  • It’s the piece every flutist dreads; and I’m here to change the narrative. So grab your copy of Ibert’s Flute Concerto, pour yourself something tropical and join me as we analyse everything that makes this concerto a damn good time.

From Ibert’s potential links to Elvis and 101 Dalmatians, to n analysis of the structure and practice tips; this episode will cover everything you might need to know about the flute repertoire’s crown jewel (certainly enough to impress your teacher or any juries you come up against.)
