Whatâs a houmous-loving keto vegan to do when chickpeas are too carby? Experiment, of course! In this episode, I take on the challenge of creating a ridiculously low-carb houmous, testing different tofu variations, playing around with tahini and miso, and even whipping up a sweet chili version that turned out to be an absolute winner.
Itâs a messy, garlicky, taste-testing adventureâcomplete with a blender betrayal, some questionable measuring techniques (who needs precision anyway?), and a moment where I nearly forgot the lemon. Again.
đ§ Listen in to discover:â How tofu stacks up as a chickpea substitute (spoiler: silken tofu is dreamy!)â The battle between miso and tahiniâwho wins in the flavour showdown?â How to make a keto-friendly sweet chili houmous that wonât wreck your carb countâ My final verdict on the best low-carb houmous recipeâ Why my beloved food processor got fired mid-way through
đ§ "What is houmous unless itâs garlicky? I mean, really."đ„ "Tahini is very drippy. You know what I mean?"đš "The sweet chili houmous wasnât chili enough⊠I might need to bring out the big guns next time."đ "I forgot the lemon. Again. I always forget something, donât I!?"đ„Ł "Itâs all very beige, isnât it? Thatâs houmous for you."đȘ "My lovely food processor betrayed me, so out came the hand blender."đ„ "This sweet chili houmous has a gentle kick, but next time Iâll seriously spice it up and throw in some serious heat!"đ„ "I also made guacamole. That might be a two-minute episode. Itâs really easy. Just mash and eat."
Best Moments:
âš The "Blender Betrayal" Moment â When you had to abandon your beloved food processor because it wasnât playing ball, and the hand blender came to the rescue.âš The Texture Revelation â Realising that silken tofu gave the smoothest houmous, while hard tofu kept things more rustic and "real."âš The Sweet Chili Triumph â When you nailed the perfect balance of sweetness and spice in your low-carb houmous.âš The Lemon Forgetting Tradition â When you realised, yet again, that lemon juice is an afterthought in your cooking process.âš The Tofu vs. Chickpea Reflection â Coming to terms with the fact that "real" houmous (aka chickpea-based) might not actually be the only way forward.

âš Next Episode Teaser:Iâll be chatting with the lovely Dy from America about how the keto diet can be truly transformative for mental health. Donât miss it!

Are plant-based meats ultra-processed, synthetic junk? Or is factory-farmed meat the real chemistry experiment?
In this episode, I break down the biggest myth about plant-based meatsâthe idea that theyâre somehow "fake" compared to conventional meat. After my brother-in-law smugly called my veggie burger âsynthetic,â I did some digging⊠and letâs just say, the irony is delicious.
Weâll look at whatâs actually in plant-based meats, whether they count as ultra-processed foods, andâmost importantlyâwhat factory-farmed animals are pumped full of to keep them growing unnaturally fast. Spoiler alert: Itâs not vitamins and love.
So, if you've ever had to defend your plant-based choices against someone eating hormone-fed, antibiotic-soaked meat, this oneâs for you. Hit play and letâs set the record straight!

Itâs 2025, the research is clear, the planet is burning, and yet people still act like veganism is some sort of fringe cult. In this episode, Iâm unleashing my frustration at the wilful ignorance around plant-based eating. Why do people ignore the overwhelming evidence that meat is bad for health, the environment, and, oh yeah, the animals? Why do they cling to myths like âyouâll die without proteinâ while happily chowing down on ultra-processed junk?
Weâll talk about the science, the stubbornness, and the sheer ridiculousness of people burying their heads in the sand (probably next to a factory farm). But donât worryâitâs not all doom and gloom. Expect a hefty dose of sarcasm, some well-placed eye rolls, and a few laughs as I dismantle the nonsense. If youâre tired of defending your vegan keto lifestyle to people who âcould never give up cheese,â this episode is for you.
đ§ Tune in, share with your meat-eating mates (if they dare), and letâs get real about why the world needs to wake up.

Welcome to The Keto Vegan Podcast! Iâm Rachel, your host and guide through the delicious world of plant-based, low-carb living. Today, weâre diving into a kitchen experiment that turned out to be a double win. You know those moments when youâre trying to make one thing and accidentally create something else thatâs just as good? Well, thatâs exactly what happened to me this week.
It all started with my mission to craft the ultimate vegan cheese using tofuârich, creamy, and totally keto-friendly. But hereâs the twist: somewhere along the way, I stumbled upon a recipe tweak that led to a surprise discoveryâa keto houmous! Yes, you heard that right. Itâs smooth, garlicky, and perfect for those low-carb crackers or crudites.
In this episode, Iâll share the step-by-step process for both recipes, the lessons learned along the way, and a few tips to elevate your vegan keto game. Whether youâre here for the cheese, the houmous, or just a bit of culinary inspiration, youâre in for a treat.
So grab your apron, and letâs get stuck in! By the end of this episode, youâll be ready to whip up two versatile and downright delicious creations to add to your keto vegan repertoire.
Ingredients
1 16-oz block extra firm tofu1/2 cup refined coconut oil2 Tbsp lemon juice2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar2 Tbsp mellow white miso paste2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil1 clove garlic2 tsp sea salt1/2 tsp ground black pepper1/4 cup plain unsweetened non-dairy milkInstructions
BLEND: Add all ingredients to your food processorand process starting on a low speed and slowly increasing to high. Blend on high for about 4-5 minutes, stopping to scrape the sides down as needed. The mixture will get really smooth and shiny towards the end which is exactly what we want! If itâs not shiny yet, keep blending.SET: If you just want to use this cheese as a spread, transfer the mixture to a large airtight container. If you want a cheese that holds its shape on a platter or can be moulded into a log, transfer the mixture to a silicone mold or plastic-lined airtight container. Cover and place it in the fridge for at least3-5 hours to fully set. If youâre shaping the vegan goat cheese, I would let it set in the fridge for at least 6-8 hours.SHAPING(optional): To make this vegan goat cheese substitute look as legit as possible, you can also mold it into those classic goat cheese logs once itâs set. Just pop the cheese out of the silicone mold or lift it out of the plastic-lined container. Then, use your hands to form the mixture into 2-4 tubes. Wrap these tubes in plastic and place them back in the fridge for at least another 60-90 minutes before serving. SERVE: When you're ready and the tofu cheesehas firmed up, remove it from the fridge and unwrap it or pull it out of the silicone mold as needed. Serve as a spread with a cheese knife onto crostini, crackers, bread, cucumbers, or all your favourite veggies. Use it to veganize all your favourite recipes that call for soft goat cheese!STORE: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 5-7 days. You can also freeze leftover cheese in an airtight container for up to 8 weeks. Defrost in the fridge until thawed through. This takes about 3-4 hours depending on the size of the serving youâre defrosting.Nutrition

In this thought-provoking episode, I take on one of the most persistent questions vegans face: âWhere do you get your protein?â Spoiler alert: Iâll also tell you why this obsession with vegan diets might just be misplacedâand why our focus should shift to far more important issues.
From the absurd stereotypes of vegan dining (âunicorn sprouts,â anyone?) to the biological truths about humans as herbivores, Iâll tackle the misconceptions head-on. Along the way, Iâll dive into why the strongest animals in the world (think gorillas and elephants) donât eat meat, and why our own bodies are designed for plant-based eating.
But itâs not all science and statistics. Weâll talk about the ethical paradoxes of caring deeply about the environment while still eating meat and hear from those on the front lines of food productionâslaughterhouse workers. This episode is a mix of facts, humour, and raw truths designed to make you think, laugh, and (hopefully) act.
If youâre concerned about the planet, curious about veganism, or just here to hear someone vent about being the token vegan at dinner parties, youâre in the right place.

How did I start getting out of my head and into spiritual awareness?
âWhen we get out of our heads and get into our breath and our body we will find the centre, the beautiful core that is love, that we areâŠâ
âWe are diamonds, covered in shit, and we try to polish the shit to make the shine come out, basically we need to get rid of the shit!â

Welcome to The Keto Vegan Podcast, with me, Rachel! As the crisp autumn air sets in and sunlight đ„ïžbecomes a bit more scarce, it's a perfect time to think about how we can keep our bodies nourished and healthy through the changing seasons. Today, we're diving into an essential topicâbone health and vitamin D, especially for us living in the northern hemisphere.
Did you know that from October to March, the lack of sunlight here means weâre unable to produce enough vitamin D naturally? This is a crucial piece of the puzzle because vitamin D helps our bodies absorb calcium, which is vital for maintaining strong bones. But don't worry, there are plant-basedđȘŽ ways to make sure we're covered. Weâll also explore vegan-friendly sources of vitamin D and supplements, including the best options for those of us who want to avoid animal-derived ingredients like sheep-grease!! Yuck! đ
So, grab a cozy blanket and a nice Pinot-Noir đ·as we explore how to maintain our bone health in the cold monthsâand remember, you donât need to compromise on your vegan lifestyle to get the nutrients your body needs! Let's get into it.
Key Takeaways
A microgram (mcg) is 1,000 times smaller than a milligram (mg). The word microgram is sometimes written with the Greek symbol ÎŒ followed by the letter g (ÎŒg). Sometimes the amount of vitamin D is expressed as International Units (IU). 1 microgram of vitamin D is equal to 40 IU. So 10 micrograms of vitamin D is equal to 400 IU.]Many Vitamin D supplements are made from the oil of sheepâs wool â basically Sheep Grease! No matter how well looked after these sheep are I think thatâs a âNOâ from me!How much Vit D should we supplement in the winter every day?Best moments

Welcome back, my fellow plant-powered, keto-crushing, animal-loving listeners to another episode of 'The Keto Vegan'! Today, weâre diving into a topic every vegan has probably scratched their head overâliterally. Yep, weâre talking about the creepy crawlies! From head lice that seem to think your hair is a five-star resort, to ants whoâve mistaken your kitchen for Coachella or Glastonbury . And donât even get me started on those fungus gnats treating your houseplants like their own personal jungle gym. So, whatâs a vegan to do? Break out the magnifying glass, a moral compass, and maybe some lavender oil? Letâs find out!
Cinnamon oil and peppermint oil are fragrant ways to stop ants coming into your home.Pinot Noir is the red wine of my choice! Ketosis not affected by it at all (weeing on those sticks again!)Vegans against head-lice: Self-Defence is the only way! What do vegan parents do when their children have head-lice?âWhat do vegans do about headlice?â âNot eat them!!ââYou want to remove the eggs as well as the nits!!ââLice are parasitic insects that infests the hairs of the human head and feed from blood from the scalp.â Sounds good doesnât itâValuable Resources
