You may remember Taryn Southern from Season 3 of American Idol. She was a top 50 finalist, but the worst thing you can imagine happening to someone on an international stage happened to her.
She forgot her lyrics.
After that happened, she vowed to never perform on stage ever again. While, in the last year she's been able to overcome that fear and perform regularly, the experience also led to her making big strides in a lot of other ways.
She created a successful YouTube channel that has over 400K subscribers, she's made many videos that have gone viral, and her most recent musical project is an album that was produced by Artificial Intelligence.
Taryn and I get into a really insightful conversation about the human experience and whether involving algorithms, robots and artificial intelligence can take away from -- Or enhance, music and any creative process.

As a resident of Boston, Massachusetts myself, it was great to have somebody doing so much for the community on the show.
The way we got in touch is a funny story. I'm working with an artist named Kyle Bent on his new album, and after one of our sessions, Kyle asked me if I could drive him to a networking event in South Bay. I gave him a ride, and didn't think much of it after that.
A few weeks later, I met Noble and he's telling me about these networking events he does in South Bay, and I'm wondering to myself "Why does that sound so familiar?" And then it hit me. That was the same event that I dropped Kyle off at.
While Noble is doing big things for the local scene and community, he actually hates the word "local," and his presence extends far beyond that.

Chris Ju AKA Kato On The Track is a professional music producer. He's worked with Hopsin, Jarren Benton, B.O.B., produced music for Fox's So You Think You Can Dance and his No Sucka MC's contest helped make Token go viral.
I've been following Kato for a little while now, and I'm honored to have him in the show. In today's episode we talk a lot about what it means to be an entrepreneur in the music industry, because at the end of the day whether you're an artist or a producer, you are an entrepreneur.
One of the key points I took from chatting with Kato is how long it took him to be successful. Kato has struggled a lot to get to where he is today. From being homeless and broke to owning his own home and finding a lot of success, it did not happen overnight for him.
It's a marathon, not a sprint. But it doesn't have to be a struggle...

Today's episode is the 2nd solo show I've done so far. As the new school year, new lease season, seasonal change, or whatever the end of summer means to you approaches, it always feels like a time for reflection and nostalgia for me.
So I wanted to do a monologue, where I talk about a minor crisis that I recently went through and what I did about it. Recently my 2011 Macbook Pro, with all of my data, important client files, podcasts, all the programs I use to produce music and everything crashed.
This couldn't have come at a worse time. Things had been going pretty well, I'd been working with one of my biggest clients yet on an album and I thought I lost the entire thing. I was not prepared to call him and tell him that we had to start over on this project we'd been working on for the past 4 months.

Shiran Nicholson and I met at an event where I gave my first talk. We had a couple mutual friends, and after only a couple short minutes of conversation I knew I wanted him to be on the show.
He has an extremely profound mind and knows the ins and outs of many different businesses and industries. From being a DJ, to a stunt man, to an actor, to owning his own event company, Shiran has developed a lot of great ideas and philosophies that he shares in today's episode.
One of the things we talk about is how much not only the industry he's in has been affected, but any business at all by the advancements of technologies and social media. Over 40 million views is how many views Tyrik Tell's America Rap clocked. Tyrik is a rapper and audio engineer who I've had the incredible honor of connecting with recently, and in today's episode we get to know the man behind the virality.
Tyrik is in Houston, Texas and first got into rapping at nine years old when he wanted to impress a girl at summer camp. Shortly after, when he got to middle school he was asked to do a rap for Black History Month and that was coincidentally the first political rap he wrote and performed that ultimately led to him breaking the internet with his America rap years later.
We talk about how it felt to get his first couple million views and the fear of putting out controversial content. For any aspiring artists listening, he leaves a golden nugget in the middle of the episode and explains exactly how he was able to get all of the views.

David Campos is a professional music producer who has sold over 1.5 million records, has written and produced jingles for international companies and also has his own online music production school.
He got his start on the piano at the young age of 6 years old, and by 16 found himself already in the professional world. He ultimately had to make the tough decision to drop out of high school in order to really take off with his career and that's what he did.
David, although he doesn't look like it, is in his forties and has seen the total evolution of music and the way the industry works. He talks about how there are 7 billion people on this planet, and to make music your career you only need to find 1% of 1% of 1% etc. of that total population of people who support you and your work.
Thinking about it like that makes it significantly less overwhelming...

Today I got the amazing opportunity to chat with Jules Schroeder, who has a story unlike any other we've heard on The Music Journal.
She takes both being a musician and an entrepreneur to another level. She built her first 6 figure business when she was 18, and her first 7 figure business at 22 years old.
From a young age, she always had music in her spirit. She was a top 200 American Idol contestant, and continues to make great music to this day.
She had a near death experience after a wake boarding accident that almost cost her life. While unconscious, she found herself on the edge of living and dying when a voice told her that she needed to live because she had more work to do. You have to hear the story for yourself.

I've had the extreme privilege of having Nick Rubeck crash on my couch on a few different occasions.
If you were to meet him for the first time today, the last thing you'd expect to hear is that Nick has served time in jail and has multiple felony's on his record. I was shocked when he first told me that.

Carla is the true definition of a warrior. Our friendship dates back about 5 years ago, and the first song I ever wrote under my own name was with her. Unfortunately, that song never saw the light of day, due to my own development as an artist, but Carla turns any track she's on into gold.
About a year and a half ago, she got diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer at only 22 years old. This is a tragedy that both she and I wouldn't wish on any one; however, Carla's positive spirit and outlook is not only infectious, but nothing shy of amazing.
Carla's been dealt some undeniably terrible cards, but through it all has always persevered. If there's anybody in the world with the courage and strength to persevere through this, it's her.
She talks about how doctors told her that she would never walk again, but today she's walking. She was told she'd never be able to live on her own, but she does. If there's anything to take from today's episode, it's that anything is possible and to not sweat the small stuff.

Today's episode features one of my best friends, Julian Green. He's a guitar lutheran, a guitar player, rapper and all around hilarious guy. We've been friends since 9th grade and I'm honored to have him on the show today.
Before jumping into the topic, which is whether or not knowing music theory is necessary to making great music, we reminisce on some of the wild adventures we've had. Years ago, I lied to a police officer on the other side of the country about my name and address and thankfully got away with it.
Though Julian and I are great friends and share similar philosophies and ideals, we have pretty different musical backgrounds and that's one of the reasons why I wanted to have him on the show. I grew up with an extensive knowledge of music theory, where Julian grew up with none. Yet both of us are able to create music and thrive in our own ways.

I wanted to shed light on a topic that I think is extremely important and share my opinions on it. I'm sure you're all too familiar with the "starving artist" or "anxty teenager" stereotypes that come with being an artist.
While a big part of what I do as an Asian hip hop artist and podcaster is to break stereotypes, I don't think it's a coincidence at all that we're starting to see so many problems with mental health not only in the music industry, but in the entertainment industry as a whole and I think it's something that affects everybody.
It's my hope that with this episode, I can help you overcome your own personal challenges and add some perspective to mental health in the music industry.

I had first heard of Kyle Bent when I went to see Joyner Lucas, Hopsin and Token on tour. I hadn't heard of him yet, but he was one of the few artists that was so good that I HAD to start following him.
Flash forward about a year, Kyle and I ended up meeting at a show that I was playing and it turned out that we had a lot in common.
