  • Imagine being at the forefront of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s research, holding hope for millions of patients. That’s where Eliezer Masliah stood—a top neuroscientist and key figure at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), responsible for overseeing billions in funding intended to push groundbreaking research on these devastating diseases forward.

But things weren’t as they seemed.

Recent investigations, including one published in Science (Vol 385, Issue 6716), have raised alarming questions about Masliah’s research. Over 100 of his studies may contain falsified data, including duplicated or manipulated images, claiming to reveal critical insights into how Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s impact the brain.

If this sounds eerily familiar, you’re right. Just two years ago, another scandal rocked the Alzheimer’s research world. Sylvain Lesné's 2006 Nature paper was considered a landmark in Alzheimer’s research—until 2022, when it was revealed that the paper was tainted by manipulated data. That revelation sent shockwaves through the scientific community, throwing years of research and drug development into doubt.

And now, we're facing a similar situation again.

The implications of these new allegations against Masliah are massive. His work has shaped entire fields of study, influencing experimental treatments like the Parkinson’s drug prasinezumab. But with these revelations, years of research and billions of dollars in funding hang in the balance.

What’s most heartbreaking? Real people—those battling Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s—are caught in the middle of this scandal. They've been placing their hopes in breakthroughs, trusting science to provide answers and relief. If the very research supporting their treatments is compromised, the cost isn't just in lost time and money—it's a betrayal of the trust placed in the system by millions of patients and their families.

We have to demand better. Science, and the people depending on it, deserve better.

  • Dr. Ray Dorsey, a neurologist at the University of Rochester, delves deep into Parkinson's disease with host Louisa Nicola, unveiling its alarming rise as a preventable, man-made condition. This episode explores environmental triggers like pesticides and chemicals while discussing preventative measures, from dietary choices to air quality.

In this episode, Dr Dorsey details the 3 common toxic chemicals in our environment and simple protocols to implement relating to the food we eat, what we drink, and the air we breathe.

This episode is important for every person who wants to prevent brain diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer's, and particularly for people who have an existing diagnosed brain disease.

"If Parkinson's disease is a man made disease, it can be human ended. It is not a natural consequence of aging."

  • Dr. Vivian Chen, a passionate advocate for recognizing the impact of environmental toxins on health, has a rich background in medicine, specializing in internal medicine and family medicine.

Her journey into environmental health was personal, driven by her daughter's health challenges which were linked to dietary allergies and, she suspects, environmental toxins. This personal experience shifted her focus towards environmental toxins and their broader implications on
health. In the podcast, Dr. Chen discusses the pervasive issue of aluminum exposure through everyday items like cookware and antacids, highlighting its potential to cause oxidative stress and DNA damage at the cellular level. She notes the broader health implications, such as increased risks
    of chronic diseases like Alzheimer's.

The conversation extends to endocrine disruptors and
obesogens, chemicals that interfere with hormonal activities and metabolic processes, emphasizing their significant yet underacknowledged impact on health.

  • On today's solo episode....

Neurodegeneration and brain aging affect millions worldwide, with numbers expected to triple by 2050. While pharmaceuticals offer limited solutions, lifestyle choices, especially exercise and diet, are vital for brain health.

Study 1: Chronic Inflammation and Cognitive Performance The CARDIA study tracked inflammation in young adults and found chronic inflammation can impair midlife cognitive performance. Participants with high CRP levels were significantly more likely to have poor processing speed and executive function. Early management of inflammation is crucial for cognitive health.

Study 2: Smoking and Cognitive Decline A Nature Communications study of 32,000 adults revealed smoking accelerates cognitive decline by up to 85% over 10 years. Smokers who adopted healthy behaviors like exercise and socializing had cognitive decline rates similar to non-smokers, highlighting the importance of quitting smoking and healthy living.

Study 3: Diets Rich in Omega-3s and Antioxidants A study found older adults with diets rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, and vitamins show slower brain aging and better cognitive function. Nutrients like alpha-linolenic acid, EPA, lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin E, and choline are crucial for brain health, emphasizing the role of diet in cognitive maintenance.

  • Dr. Nathan Bryan earned his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin and his doctoral degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport where he was the recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research. He pursued his post-doctoral training as a Kirschstein Fellow at Boston University School of Medicine in the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute. After a two year post-doctoral fellowship, in 2006 Dr. Bryan was recruited to join faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston by Ferid Murad, M.D., Ph.D., 1998 Nobel Laureate in Medicine or Physiology.

During his nine years at UT, Dr. Bryan focused on drug discovery, screening natural product libraries for active compounds. His research led to over a dozen US and international patents. Notably, he was the first to describe nitrite and nitrate as essential nutrients for cardiovascular health and demonstrated an endocrine function of nitric oxide. He discovered compositions that generate and restore nitric oxide in humans, validated by six clinical trials.

On this episode, Max will speak about nutrition and dementia. With so many conflicting views on which nutrition route to take towards staving off Alzheimer's disease, there is too much confusion so Max provides a great overview of what route to take according to clinical data.

Alzheimer's disease, one of the most dreaded conditions of old age, is unfortunately made even more of a burden by a gene called ApoE4. With two copies of this gene, you can double your risk of developing this devastating condition, proving that life isn't always fair. Even if you don't have the gene, aging still increases your chances, making it seem like no matter what you do, Alzheimer's will still creep up on you. But don't lose hope - animal studies have found that heat shock proteins can at least offer some protection against it. So, while Alzheimer's may be looming in your future, there may still be some hope.
