Jess and Lisa are back for a new season of The Sexy Scary Book Club. Over our break, we discovered author Carissa Broadbent and we loved both of the books we read so much, we simply couldn't choose which one to cover on the pod. So, we decided to create a new theme so we could talk about both! The theme for this week is 2 Books, 1 Author. We are diving into two very different but equally lush and dangerous worlds full of vampires, fae, magic, monsters and (of course) complicated relationships. Join us while we delve into Daughter of No Worlds and The Serpent & the Wings of Night for our Season 4 premiere!

It seems like most paranormal romance, fantasy romance series meets it's heroine here at some point. She comes face to face with her life as she knows it and a brave new world where nothing is as it seems. The world she was raised in is all of a sudden nothing but question marks and no one is willing to share all the information. Secrets are uncovered, those once thought enemies might become the only people she can trust. At the end of it all, she'll have to choose a side and fight for what she believes. This week we're reading Gleam by Raven Kennedy and Blood Oath by Raye Wagner and Kelly St. Clare. What side will they choose and do we agree?

What makes for a kind alpha, and are we starting to see more of them in recent paranormal/fantasy fiction? Okay, sure, there's still some manipulation at play here, but it's all for the greater good and growth of our heroine's arc... so that's probably okay, right? In this episode, Lisa and Jess look at Commander Rip from The Plated Prisoner series by Raven Kennedy and Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas.
-
The theme this week looks at retellings of popular figures from mythology, religion and lore. Lisa and Jess discuss Neon Gods by Katee Roberts and Gild by Raven Kennedy. Sex parties, spicy bargains and a touch of pure gold. Oh my! Join us for another episode, won't you?
-
Aliens Attack! this week where Lisa and Jess ask the question, does it really count as captivity when your lodgings are like a 5 star hotel with 24 hour room services and your captor has abs of steel and is real good in bed?, in The Krinar Captive by Anna Zaires. Oh, and how about some conscious consent and maybe a shower before snacking on my downstairs, thank you very much, in Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon.

From Victorian London to Istanbul. From dragons to fallen angels. From secret parentage and faked deaths, to barely restrained lust and some...questionable consent.
This week we'll be discussing everyone's favorite, the Secret trope, highlighting Shana Abe's The Smoke Thief and The Scribe by Elizabeth Hunter.

Lisa and Jess discuss The Restorer by Amanda Stevens and The Shadow Reader by Sandy Williams this week. Our theme is all about those books that you've read, you've loved, but you just can't quite remember them...like...at all.
Jess has picked the first book in the Graveyard Queen series for Lisa. Amelia gray is a cemetery restorer in Charleston who can also see ghosts. Amelia finds herself swept up in a murder mystery, when bodies keep being discovered in the cemetery that she’s been hired to restore…ones that aren’t supposed to be there. During the investigation, Amelia is introduced to detective John Devlin, an ex member of Charleston high society with plenty of his own secrets, including the fact that he’s being haunted. Amelia feels drawn to Devlin and when the two team up to solve the murders, Amelia can’t help but start to fall for Devlin, even if it means breaking all her rules.
Lisa's pick for Jess: The Shadow Reader. Human McKenzie Lewis can track the fae by reading the shadows they leave behind. For years, she has been in the employ of the fae king , tracking rebels attempting to overthrow the throne...until she's captured by their leader, Aren. Now she's starting to question everything she's believed. As the fighting becomes more fierce, McKenzie is faced with the ultimate choice: Who will she trust and for which side will she fight?

Sure main characters are great, or whatever, but how about some love for those side-piece characters who are always catching our eye??
You know who I'm talking about. Our Wolven bestie Kieran from the Blood & Ash series by Jennifer Armentrout. Poppy may only have eyes for Casteel, except, wait a minute...she's been peeping some of Kieran's personal biz. There's a particular outdoor celebration that comes to mind, or maybe multiple outdoor...celebrations...Okay, girl. We see you.
And let us not forget everyone's favorite Demon Daddy, Lars from Stacey Marie Brown's Darkness series. Who doesn't love a rich demon power player, moving everyone around like pawns in his own personal game of chess? ...Well, but, it's okay when they're super hot and it's all for the greater good or whatever, right?
Join us for a new episode where we leave the main course out of it cause it's all about the sides this week!

Last week we went old school and this week we're going Back to School. We're talking about the first book in the Zodiac Academy series, The Awakening by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti. Twins Tori and Darcy find out that instead of being the humans they thought, they are actually Fae, and not only that, but the last known heirs to the throne. Whisked away to the Zodiac Academy, they'll have to master their newfound powers quickly in order to protect themselves. Mostly from the constant harassment of the 4 Celestial Heirs, who never pass up an opportunity to torment them. Can they do what's needed to graduate from the Academy and collect their inheritance, or will enemies both mysterious and known keep them from what's rightfully theirs?
Next up is a "Slow Burn Paranormal Witch Romance," Curse of Stone. Book one in Veronica Shade's Academy of the Damned series. Madison has turned her back on her Witch heritage, snubbing her nose at the customary invite to La Voisin school for witches and instead trying to blend in amongst humans. Everything seems to be going fine until her boyfriend ends up dead when Madison uses her powers to save a friend. Realizing she might need help to control her witch abilities after all, she flees to La Voisin. Here she seems unable to escape the cloud of death, when her roommate meets an untimely demise. Madison and her newfound friends find themselves wrapped up in a real Nancy Drew style mystery.
It might be summer, but this week on The Sexy Scary Book Club, we're going Back to School!

This week the theme is Going Old Skool & we'll be chatting about some of the OGs in the paranormal romance/urban fantasy genre. We'll be hanging out at Mercy garage with Mechanic and coyote shifter Mercy Thompson. When a wayward kid, and newly turned werewolf shows up dead on her porch after putting in a few days work at her shop, Mercy is roped into helping unravel the mystery of who murdered the kid and who is drugging and killing local Werewolves, in Patricia Brigg's Moon Called. Then we're spending time in the world of Necromancer, Paranormal Investigator, Vampire slayer and overall bad a** Anita Blake, in Laurel K. Hamilton's Circus of the Damned. Just when Anita thinks she has her hands full with one master vampire, another master has come to town and he also seems to have his sights set on Anita. Some gals have all the luck.
We're dishing about what made these books end up in our classic series list and how they paved the way for a genre that's since exploded. We'll discuss how the threshold for romance has changed, the delicate balance of spice and story, & just what the hell is up with all those frilly shirts Jean-Claude wears?

Wait...Were what? This episode is dedicated to those uncommon shifter books you sometimes stumble across that have you scratching your head, raising your eyebrows and wondering, how does THAT work in bed?
This week we're hanging out with honey badger shifter sisters who can't manage to stay out of trouble, courtesy of their criminal of a father, in Hot & Badgered by Shelly Laurenston. Next will go hang out with a bunch of Mermen and other weird beach creatures on a strange magical island, in Mimi Jean Pamfiloff's Mermen. Wait, these mermen lost their tails? Does that even count?

We're back for a new season of The Sexy Scary Book Club and this time, it's all about THEMES. This week we're discussing A Fantasy of Frost by Kelly St. Clare and A Shadow in the Ember by Jennifer Armentrout. These books have a lot in common, from their bad ass take care of business heroines to the strong Alphas constantly trying (and failing) to keep them out of harms way. But, the most interesting commonality is that both of the main characters wear veils (at least to start), and the reason behind this might have to do with a couple of pretty bad moms.
Please join us while we dig into these two books. What's similar, what's different, what's sexy, what's scary, and what the heck is up with those veils?!...
