This Soccer Mom Sunday episode’s guest does! Tori Penso is a Professional Soccer Referee at the highest levels in the game - from the NWSL to the MLS in the United States. She is also the first American referee to ever officiate a World Cup final! When she was in STL to referee St. Louis CITY SC versus the Houston Dynamo, we got a chance to sit down and talk about her incredible story of coming up through the referee ranks, balancing a high-level profession with being a Mom to her 3 daughters, and juggling schedules with her professional referee husband, Chris. We discuss his path from North County playing for NORCO, to Rosary High, SLU University, and the biggest trade in Steamers history bringing him back to St. Louis, sending two legends to play on the west coast for a while! We were able to pull back the curtains a little bit on Jim’s view on US soccer, the first couple of years for City SC, and his outlook for soccer beyond the upcoming World Cup that is to be hosted right here in the USA. Another soccer-player-turned-coach here on Soccer Mom Sunday! Host Jen Siess talked with St. Louis University Soccer Great, Brionna Halverson. During her six years as a student-athlete at SLU, Bri earned a multitude of individual honors - from Defensive Player of the Year, to All Conference recognition, to their 25th Anniversary team and more. All of her individual efforts helped her Billiken team towards some of their best records, including five A-10 tournament titles, four A-10 regular-season crowns, five NCAA tournaments, and SLU's school-record 15 shutouts and 0.45 goals against average that ranked third in the nation. NOW, Bri is focused on soccer life after playing, currently as a SLU Assistant Coach, reminding us that “soccer is a game of seconds” and when it comes to an athlete’s self-advocacy, “don’t take their voice from them."

On this episode of Soccer Mom Sunday, host Jen Siess talked with budding soccer coach, Casey Beran. A former St. Louis soccer player herself, Casey grew up in The Beautiful Game, but didn’t really find that sense of “soccer family” on the club side with changing rosters, switching clubs, and/or rotating coaches. In high school at Incarnate Word, she DID find that soccer family, but burnt out on the game with lack of playing time and little explanation as to why or how. Casey finally found her sweet spot in club and intramural soccer in college at Missouri State University. Now, armed with degrees in education along with athletic administration, Casey spends time on the pitch with young girls, hoping to instill that family feeling for them, along with reaching for success!

Though her high school in Texas didn’t have a girls’ team, Kacey still found her love for soccer, which took her all the way to the University of North Carolina as a teammate and roommate of Lori Chalupny, and even coached and mentored by the legendary Anson Dorrance. Always looking for playing opportunities, Kacey made her way to the US Women’s National Team with 18 caps, then the professional life in Sweden and the US. Listen in for her journey from player, to A-license coach, to broadcaster - plus the lessons she tries to impart upon the parents and players in her charge.

Things get spicy on this Soccer Mom Sunday! Jen Siess was joined by Isabel Diaz, Vice President of STL Santos, one of the supporters groups for local MLS team, St. Louis CITY SC. Isabel shared stories of her beginnings as a supporter of The Beautiful Game as a little girl growing up in Colombia . Now, she leads an extremely passionate supporters group in St. Louis, who do so much more than cheer on their favorite MLS team. Besides building awesome TIFO’s, they raise money for great causes, build community inside and outside of the stadium, and have a ton of fun along the way! Listen in for Isabel's story of how Santos is a source of connection for their members, a little trash talk about rivals, and her thoughts on the growth of the Women's Game, particularly with historic performances recently from her home National Team.

Jen Siess was joined by Julie Gary - a former Air Defense Artillery Officer with the US Army, Professor at Washington University, Bureau Chief of Behavioral Health at the City of St. Louis Department of Health - AND, in her spare time, she’s also a SOCCER MOM of her daughter, Jordan, who is a St. Louis University Women’s Soccer Billiken! In this episode, we chatted about parenting that long journey from the days on youth soccer fields to D1 collegiate play, and the immense pressure on athletes today. Julie also shared her family’s unique way of supporting each other emotionally, and shared information on an important mental health resource for all of us, from parents to kids.
